People are Troublesome

Disclaimer: Naruto isn't mine.

Shikamaru really wasn't surprised that Hidan had ended up sleeping at his house. By now it was becoming normal behaviour and so he didn't even say anything. Instead of trying to force himself into the bed, he had camped out on the sofa out of the way.

Hidan had buried himself under the duvet in a giant bundle and movement could barely be detected. He didn't stir when Shikamaru wandered in and out of the room and he had to poke him hard to produce some kind of reaction.

"Fuck off."

"You're going to be late."

"So are you."

"How? I'm dressed." Hidan reached an arm out from under the duvet and grabbed Shikamaru's leg. He did have quite a strong grip. "Are you going to let go?"

"Later."

"We have P.E."

"No we don't."

"Please stop." He would definitely be killed by Yoshino if he didn't go into school.

"It's called living. Do it."

"I won't be alive for much longer if I don't get to school." Trying to wrench his leg away didn't work for him and all the time it was getting later. "Why are you being so annoying?"

Hidan momentarily let go of Shikamaru's leg and so he thought he was being allowed to escape. Instead he found the duvet was being thrown over his head and he was forced to the ground. Although he couldn't see anything, from the sudden weight on top of him it was clear that he was being sat on.

"Hidan!" It was hard to speak properly when your chest was being crushed. After what felt like forever, the weight was lifted and he could actually breathe again. Ripping the duvet off, he stared at the clock next to his bed and froze. It was currently half past nine. He was very late.

"What did you do?" He was going to be in such deep shit over this. Hidan sat calmly on the floor and observed the freaking out with slight amusement. "You can explain this to my parents."

"I can get you out of it." Shikamaru stared at him.

"How?" He doubted this was likely.

"Give me a second." He leant over to his bag and pulled out a phone, scrolling through it until he found what he was looking for.

"I need a favour." The person at the other end of the line wasn't that happy about this. "I'm always doin' shit for you!" More yelling. "It's not that hard, just say that me and Shika are ill." He paused. "Shika. Shikamaru Nara. That guy… Yeah, the one who looks fuckin' stoned all the time… Just do it… Fine, we'll sort that shit later… Yeah, fuck you too." And then he tossed the phone to the side. "Done."

"What did you do?"

"Puppet fucker's gonna cover for us."

"Oh…" And he knows me as the guy who always looks stoned. Excellent. "Wait, did you phone him in the middle of a class?"

"Not like he does any work." This he couldn't deny. And knowing him, no one would even be suspicious at him having a screaming row down the phone with someone mid lesson.

"So we don't have to go in?"

"No."

"And we won't get any crap from the school?"

"I just have to do the puppet fucker a favour."

"He is a pretty useful guy to know, isn't he?"

"Yup."

"…So what are we supposed to do?" Being stuck in school all day was dull admittedly but it wasn't like there was much to do at home either.

"Sleep?"

"Not all day." Though this was tempting. How his friends would react to this he was unsure. They were already confused by him being weird.

"Usually you spend the whole day sleeping."

"I'm dressed now." With great annoyance he picked up a change of clothes and stalked off to change. When he returned Hidan had fallen asleep again, this time just on the floor.

"Wake up!" The last few days had made him more confident in yelling at the other boy. Hidan looked confused at the source of the noise.

"Whyyounoisy?" This was pronounced as one slurred word.

"Why did you want me to skive with you if you were just going to sleep?" There was no reason for him to be there at all.

"You wanted to spend time with me yesterday." As usual he used one of his vague explanations. "Plus I got you an excuse to stay off."

"I suppose you did." It did mean he could get all that shitty extra homework some teachers insisted on setting him finished. Leaving the idiot alone, Shikamaru went downstairs and started attempting to get organised. Occasionally movement could be heard upstairs. Hidan didn't bother appearing for about an hour and even helped himself to food.

"You doin' work?"

"They give me extra. Because obviously geniuses need to work extra hard." He was such a lazy person that it seemed wrong for him to be born with an above average intelligence. He would've been happy being average.

"Don't do it if you don't want to."

"If I don't I get yelled at."

"And? Tell 'em to go fuck themselves."

"My mum will not like that."

"Is she gonna do it for you?"

"No…"

"Then fuck her." And after this proclamation he shoved more food in his mouth.

"You have a lot of fun don't you?"

"I guess?" Hidan seemed confused at this idea.

"You enjoy yourself more than I do anyway."

"You have more friends than I do."

"That doesn't mean they don't stress me out too." Kiba in particular came to mind. Hidan looked at him for a while in that unsettling way of his, his head tilted slightly to one side. "What?"

"What are we?" The uncomfortable staring continued.

"Human?" This was a weird question to ask.

"I meant relationship wise. Asshole."

"Oh… Friends?" They spent a lot of time together and did not hate each other. Plus he didn't want to say something like acquaintances and piss him off.

"Really?" You're surprised?

"Do you dislike that?"

"No…" Hidan sighed. He really was a weird one. As the silence went on for a while Shikamaru attempted to get back to work. It wasn't that difficult for him. The problem was that it was all incredibly repetitive to do the same old crap over and over again.

"How'd ya work that out?" Hidan pointed to one of the random questions.

"I thought about it. Really hard." Surely that was all you could really do in some cases?

"Oh." After waiting a while Shikamaru resumed his work. "Why is that one that?"

"Because it is?" Hidan had shuffled closer since they'd last talked and was watching him as he worked.

"Are you just going to sit there and watch me do this?" The boy shrugged. "Wouldn't you prefer the TV or something?"

"Why?"

"Because it is a lot more interesting than all this." Staring at paint dry was more interesting than this.

"Daytime TV. That's what'll be on. Fucking daytime TV."

"…Yeah, I get your point." It was very distracting to have someone constantly peering over your shoulder when you were trying to think however.

"You're fast." Hidan did sound impressed by this.

"I like to get it done." As he went he made sure to adjust a couple of his answers slightly.

"Why ya doin' that?"

"I need to get a few wrong so they don't give me any more sodding work." Yamato was very likely to do this. Damn recently qualified teachers being keen. Shikamaru could only count down the days until Yamato became as disillusioned with his job as the rest.

"That's pretty smart."

"If you want to be lazy, you need to be smart sometimes." It didn't take him long to finish the accursed worksheet and move on to the next bout. This whole annoying exercise took him most of the morning and Hidan sat and watched the whole time. It was kind of amazing that he hadn't lapsed in concentration.

"Wasn't that really dull for you?" It had been boring as hell for Shikamaru and he had actually been doing something.

"I've done worse."

"I see…" Shikamaru heard his phone signal a message and sighed. There had been a few texts from his friends and although he hadn't bothered to check them, he was aware that they wanted to know what was going on.

"You gonna check that?"

"No." Hidan shrugged and grabbed the phone, flicking through the assorted messages. "Wait! Don't do that!"

"'Psycho albino'? I'm not an albino!" …That's the part you object to?

"Sorry…" Hidan didn't even look particularly upset with this. Probably he had heard it all so many times he didn't care about insults as much. He shrugged and tossed the phone to Shikamaru.

"They wanna know why you've been so fucked up. Apparently."

"…" Shikamaru quickly fired off a text to Ino and then chucked the phone to one side. "Right, let's do something."

"That." Hidan pointed to an old Sega they kept in the corner. He wasn't sure how the guy had noticed it.

"If you want? I'm pretty sure we only have sonic though." This was apparently acceptable.

"Ok, you better explain. Seriously we have been so worried about you." Ino was standing on his front door step, along with Naruto and Kiba.

"Where's Choji?" The guy usually showed up.

"Family thing apparently."

"Come in then." He gestured to the area of his dad's office (although why he called it that no one knew, since he did no work in it). Hidan was still in the lounge attempting the same level he'd been on for about two hours.

"What did you want to talk about?" Naruto started the conversation.

"Mainly Hidan."

"You little-. Don't go down there you blue spiky cunt!" They all jumped at this.

"…He's playing sonic."

"Ohh!" Kiba nodded in understanding.

"Ok what about Hidan?"

"Could you guys maybe… be nicer to him?" He wasn't sure how else to say it. He had been expecting the odd looks though as it wasn't something anyone would normally talk about.

"Nicer?"

"Yes."

"To the guy who hates everything?"

"He's not that bad."

"He punches people. Frequently."

"He's short-tempered and loud, I know. He's just not as bad as he seems." More sceptical looks. He sighed. This was kind of troublesome. "You don't have to like him or be friends with him, just don't act like you hate him whenever he comes near you." Admittedly he did that to everyone else but still.

"But he scowls at us all the time! Like he's sending death with his eyes!"

"Oh… Yeah that is weird. He, err… He doesn't do that on purpose."

"The scowling?" Naruto looked confused.

"Yeah it's accidental. It's his neutral expression."

"…That's weird."

"It is."

"Why are you so worried about him anyway?" Ino asked the question he had been asking himself for days.

"I don't know." He rubbed his forehead to get rid of the approaching migraine. "It's troublesome."

"So why-?"

"Because even he doesn't deserve to be alone all the time." This was the main part. Hidan was not the friendliest of people but even he got lonely sometimes. Plus keeping Hidan and his friends separate was starting to get stressful, something he really hated.

"I guess I could try?" Naruto was one of the most understanding when it came to these things.

"If it makes you feel better."

"And as long as he doesn't punch us."

"That depends on whether or not you piss him off Kiba." And with this guy it seemed likely.

"You egg-shaped wanker! Fuck you!" Hidan had reached the boss fight it seemed.

"…He's really into that game isn't he?"

"Well he's been trying to finish that level for two hours so…"

"Get your ass in here now!" This was apparently aimed at Shikamaru. "This bastard is fucking with me!"

"…Well we better get going!"

"Yeah have fun Shika!"

"Thanks guys…" It was nice to know your friends stuck by you in times of trouble.
