What if Jackie hadn't kissed the cheese guy? What if she ran into a friend instead?
Part six of my tumblr prompts game.
Prompt suggested by anon via ask:
"Prompt game jackie kissing hyde instead of todd the cheese guy"
This story was named after a Muse song because they're the best band in the world. Also, the lyrics totally fit this story.
Undisclosed Desires
Jackie leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. She was exhausted, and all she wanted was to go home, take a nice warm bath, read the new edition of Tiger Beat, and rest.
She just had the worst day; her boss tried to kiss her, her legs were killing her, and now she'll have to walk back home because Michael forgot to pick her up at work. Again.
She spends the entire day on her feet, offering smelly cheese samples to random people and being leered at by old, pervy guys, all because she refused to break up with stupid Michael, and he couldn't even be bothered to pick her up at work.
She should've listened to her dad, to Donna, to Steven . They all told her she's too good for Michael, they all said she should break up with him, but she was stupid and stubborn and didn't listen to them.
They were right. She should've broken up with him a long time ago. In fact, she should've never gotten back together with him.
He cheated on her with Laurie, with Pam Macy, with a girl from Sacred Heart… hell, Fez even mentioned something about Michael sleeping with coach Fergusson's wife.
God, why is she still with him?
Sure, Michael is gorgeous, but lately, she hasn't been feeling very attracted to him. He's pretty, but he's not handsome, and the sound of his voice doesn't make shivers go down her spine, not like...
No, you need to stop thinking about him, Jackie. You blew everything on Veteran's day. Get. Over. It.
She was broken out of her thoughts when she heard footsteps, but she didn't bother in opening her eyes, at least not until she felt that amazing smell, his smell.
A mix between cigarettes and something musky, with a slight hint of peppermint from the gum he's always chewing. If she could, she would bury her nose on the crook of his neck and spend the rest of her day like that, just smelling him.
She opened her eyes, and there he was, leaning next to her on the wall, eyes hidden behind his usual pair of sunglasses.
"Hey," He said, and she took a deep breath before answering, praying for him not to notice the goosebumps that rose all over her skin because of the sound of his voice.
"Hey" She replied, giving him a small, but warm smile "What are you doing here? I thought you hated the mall"
"Well… I was in the neighborhood and figured you might need a lift" He said nonchalantly, gesturing for her to follow him "Kelso bailed on you again?"
"Yeah…" She sighed, adjusting her purse as they started the walk towards the parking lot "And I just had the worst day! Can you believe my boss tried to kiss me earlier?"
"He what?!" Hyde exclaimed, immediately losing his zen and turning around, walking back to the cheese palace "Where's that little twerp?"
Jackie gently grabbed his arm and stopped him from walking any further, and he froze. Even her slightest touch makes him feel all tingly. He took a deep breath in an attempt to compose himself, he needs to get a grip on himself, or else he's going to end up turning into Forman, and that's just pathetic.
Pathetic. He's pathetic.
"The little twerp went home after I kicked him in the shins," Jackie said with a proud, but tired smile on her face, and Hyde couldn't help but smile back.
"Atta girl," Hyde said, resuming their walk "I still want to kick his ass"
"I wouldn't do that if I were you" Jackie replied, taking her stuff and following Hyde through the parking lot "He's a black belt"
"He's what?" Hyde asked incredulously "Nah man, there's no way"
"He is!" Jackie laughed "He kept trying to impress me, and one day, he brought wood planks to work just so he could snap them in half in front of me"
"Really?" Hyde asked curiously, absentmindedly opening the passenger door for her, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by Jackie, and she smiled. "What did you say?"
"I said that if I ended up with a splinter because of this stupid stunt I would sue him" Jackie replied. Hyde laughed and started the engine.
"You're coming along nicely," Hyde said, smirking at her
"I had a great sensei" Jackie replied, smiling back. "So, what cartoon was more important to Michael than picking me up today? Yesterday, it was Scooby-Doo, and the day before that, it was Sesame Street. My boyfriend would rather watch Sesame Street instead of picking me up at work"
Hyde shifted uncomfortably in his seat, they were having such a nice time, why did she have to bring Kelso into the conversation?
"You can tell me, Steven. I'm not going to be mad at you "
"The Jetsons" Hyde replied, and Jackie sighed, leaning her head on the car's window
"Why am I with him?" She muttered under her breath "He cares more about stupid cartoons than with me"
"Well…"
"I think I'm going to break up with him" Jackie blurted, and Hyde inwardly cursed himself when his heart started beating frantically inside his chest "It's not like things are the same…"
"What do you mean?" Hyde asked, trying to feign disinterest.
"I mean… Every time you watch a romantic movie, or read a book, there's always… a spark, y'know? The girl is supposed to feel all sorts of things, but I've never felt this way, not with him… And I really wanted to," She said as she started fidgeting with some loose strands on the skirt of her dress "I mean, I definitely felt something in the beginning of our relationship, but it faded away so fast… I think that's one of the reasons why I kept him around for so long, I was kind of hoping to feel that again"
He used every single ounce of Zen he had on his body at this moment. He knew what Jackie was talking about, because as much as he hates to admit it, he felt this way too. Once. When they kissed on Veteran's day.
"And I feel like I'm bitchier when I'm with him. Like, he makes me a bad person, and I think I do the same to him," Jackie said sadly "Sometimes I don't really like myself when I'm with him, and that's saying something because most of the time I love myself"
Hyde looked at her and felt a pressure on his chest, he's been feeling that every time he looks at her now, ever since their kiss. She's so beautiful, it literally takes his breath away sometimes.
And what she's saying makes a lot of sense. He likes her alright, but he has to admit, she's different when she's with Kelso, and not in a good way. Jackie's a cool person, and he likes spending time with her, but Kelso brings out the worst in her.
It was one of the reasons why he was so upset when she got back together with him. Sure, he had (still has) a crush on her, and she broke his heart, but even if he wasn't crushing on her, he'd still be upset. He was really enjoying the new version of Jackie, she was actually cool to hang out with. Even Forman thought so.
"Not to mention how bad of a boyfriend he is," She continued "Let me tell you, Steven, Michael should be kissing my ass for taking him back after all the scummy things he did to me! I mean, he cheated on me with Laurie, of all people! That girl is a walking STD! He set my house on fire, he gave me a whoopie cushion for my birthday last year, he used to ask me for money all the time, he never spends any time with me anymore, which, I should be mad about, but I'm relieved! I'm relieved by the fact I don't get to see his annoying face every day! What kind of girl doesn't want to see her own boyfriend? God, and don't even get me started on how stupid he is! He sold his own sperm, Steven! Who does that?!"
Hyde grimaced "Yeah, why did you take him back, man?"
"Because I'm stupid!" Jackie answered, "I mean, I don't even think I love him anymore..."
Hyde's eyes widened underneath his sunglasses "What?"
"And I got a job for him! I mean, an actual job! Offering cheese samples to people!" Jackie continued to vent. She didn't hear him before "I spend the entire day on my feet, wearing this stupid uniform and…"
"Hey, don't insult the uniform, I think it's pretty great" Hyde smirked at her, and Jackie couldn't help but let out a small giggle.
"Pig" She laughed, lightly slapping his arm.
Hyde's smirk turned into a soft smile when he saw Jackie's posture relaxing for the first time since he'd seen her today "You feeling better?"
Jackie smiled back "Yeah, thank you"
"You can insult him some more if you want, I don't mind"
"I think I'm past the insult part" She sighed, "I think I just want to do something about it now, I can't let him keep treating me this way. I know it doesn't look like it, but I am a self-respectful woman!"
"I know you are, doll," He said, accidentally letting his secret nickname for her out. He was about to apologize, but he decided not to when he realized she was smiling and blushing. "So, you're going to talk to him, or are you going to end things for good?"
Jackie took a deep breath and placed her hand on his knee, making Hyde feel like someone was tying a big ass knot on his stomach.
Fuck.
"What do you think I should do?" She asked, looking expectantly at him
"Jackie, I can't tell you what to do man, Kelso's my friend, and…" He started, but she interrupted him
"So? I'm your friend too, right?"
He sighed "Yeah"
"Steven, you're the smartest person I know, and I could really use some good advice on this" Jackie said, gently rubbing her thumb through the worn-out denim covering his knee "Do you think I should keep trying to make things work, or do you think I should just rip off the bandaid and break up with him?"
He glanced at the streets ahead of them for a few seconds, trying to ignore Jackie's expectant look.
Kelso was his best friend, but Jackie… Well, she's his friend too, sort of, a friend he often has wet dreams about, but still a friend.
But overall, she's a good person. It took him a while to realize that, but he did eventually. Jackie has a big heart, and she loves with everything she has, she's too good for Kelso, always has been, and she deserves better.
Also, if Jackie breaks up with Kelso, then maybe he won't feel so guilty about liking her anymore, maybe he could even make a move, and...
God, what the hell is wrong with him? This isn't about him or Kelso. This is about Jackie.
"Jackie… Are you happy with Kelso?" He asked, and she shook her head sadly.
"No" She admitted "I haven't been for a while now"
"Then you should do what makes you happy, doll," He said, parking his car on her driveway, looking deeply into her mismatched eyes, and placing his hand on top of hers "We're here"
Jackie looked up at him, and she felt the same pang on her chest she felt on Veteran's day. And every day after that.
Suddenly, all she could remember was how she felt on their date; how her heart was beating so frantically inside her chest that she actually thought she was going to have a heart attack; how she felt like breaking into a celebratory dance when he gently placed his jacket over her shoulder - without her even asking him to; how even now, several months after their date, she still has to repress an urge to smile every single time she looks at him.
Not to mention how she felt when they kissed… Like her entire body was on fire.
She felt true bliss with him on that day, she was just too stupid, confused, and scared to do something about it, so she lied.
That was probably one of the worst decisions she had ever made in her life.
He was staring at her, looking concerned. Steven cares about her, and she cares about him too, has been for a long time now.
His hand was still on top of hers, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles in soft, circular motions, and she took a deep breath.
She interlaced their fingers together, amazed at how well their fingers seemed to fit, and how just holding his hand made her feel more sparks than she'd ever felt during her entire relationship with Michael.
She looked at his face again, and she could swear his breath hitched for a few seconds...
And God, he's beautiful. Not handsome, not pretty, but beautiful.
Her gaze lingered on his lips, and… screw it. She's going to follow his advice.
"You're right," She said, moving closer to him and taking the sunglasses off his face, exposing his gorgeous blue eyes to her "I should do what makes me happy"
He sent her a questioning look, but before he could say something, Jackie's lips were on his.
And all he could think was: Finally.
Unlike the time she tried to kiss him after she bought him new boots, he kissed her back, he kissed her back with everything he had.
His lips moved against hers while he used his hands to try and bring her as close as possible to him.
She deepened the kiss, nudging his mouth open wider so that she could slide her tongue over his. Her hands moved to his hair, her perfect fingers tangling themselves around his thick curls, her nails softly scratching his scalp.
They both started to feel a little lightheaded as the kiss grew more heated and their need for oxygen increased, and he reluctantly pulled away from her.
"Jackie…" He whispered once they were able to catch their breaths, his eyes fixed on her perfect, pouty lips, slightly swollen from their kiss "What are you doing?"
"Kissing you…" She said, running her thumbs on his sideburns, and Hyde closed his eyes "You want me to stop?"
"No" He immediately replied. She smiled at him, and he smiled back.
It's a mistake, he knows that. She's Kelso's girlfriend, he should tell her to back off, tell her they shouldn't do that, that this is a mistake.
But all he could think about as Jackie's lips glided over his again is that this is the best mistake he'd ever made.
Hyde tapped his foot anxiously on the basement's floor, trying to control the many, many thoughts that were going through his mind right now.
He still hasn't seen Jackie after what happened, and he was starting to freak out.
It's been 22 hours and 42 minutes since he drove back to the Forman's, his swollen lips curved upwards on a small, satisfied smile. He remembered being in a dazed, blissful state for a few hours, until reality caught up to him.
What if Jackie decided not to break up with Kelso? What if she pretends that last night didn't happen and she and Kelso revert back to their sick, loving phase? What if she did tell Kelso, making him lose one of his oldest friends?
Forman, Donna, and Fez would definitely side up with Kelso. He made out with his chick for almost an hour behind his back, he broke the code, he fucked things up. No matter how shitty of a boyfriend Kelso was to Jackie, he's still his friend, and you don't kiss your friend's girlfriend.
He sure as hell would be pissed at Kelso if he made a move on Donna, the girl Forman's been in love since they were kids.
And Kelso and Jackie met as kids too…
He took off his sunglasses and hooked them to his shirt, nervously running his hands through his face. He fucked up, he fucked up badly. He was going to lose Jackie, and he was going to lose all of his friends, all because of his stupid crush on her.
What the hell was he thinking when he kissed her? Sure, it was the best kiss of his life, and he would like to do that again, but he's scum. He doesn't deserve to feel that way again, he doesn't deserve any happiness, especially if it'll make other people - Kelso - miserable.
His paranoid thoughts were interrupted when he heard someone opening the basement door.
"Steven?" He heard her voice, and his heart start beating so hard inside his chest that he could swear anyone within a 5 mile radius of him would be able to hear it.
God, he's pathetic.
"Hey," He replied, trying to sound nonchalant as Jackie removed her coat and sat on the couch, looking at him with her big, beautiful, mismatched eyes of hers.
He silently cursed himself. She's Kelso's chick, he has no right to think about how her eyes are one of the most gorgeous things he'd ever seen.
"So…" Jackie started awkwardly, gently smoothing the front of her skirt with her hands "Maybe we should talk about what happened last night?"
"We don't have to," Hyde replied "I mean, it was just a kiss, right? No one has to know. We can just… put all of this behind and pretend like it never happened"
"Look, Steven, that wasn't just a kiss, okay?" Jackie said, taking his hand in hers "We made out for almost an entire hour in your car, and we probably would've done more if my father hadn't arrived home when he did, we..."
"I know, Jackie" He interrupted her "I already told you, it doesn't have to mean anything, alright? You're probably still hung up on Kelso, and…"
"Speaking of Michael, I just talked to him," Jackie said, and Hyde's stomach churned. He swallowed the bile that was rising on his throat before taking a deep breath, trying to pretend that he doesn't care, even though he does care. A lot more than he should.
"So… you told him?" Hyde asked apprehensively, trying not to fidget on his seat. Fuck, this is it.
"No," Jackie answered "I didn't tell him about our kiss, but I did break up with him"
Hyde hated how his head instantly snapped up and how his eyes immediately glued to hers "You did?"
"I told you I wasn't happy with him, Steven," She said honestly "I don't want Michael, even if you don't want me, I'm not getting back together with him"
"Wait, you want to be with me ?" Hyde asked, not being able to hide his surprise.
"Yeah, duh!" She said, "Didn't I make that pretty obvious, in the car?"
"I…"
"I literally looked you in the eye and said that you make me happy! How could you still think I wouldn't want to be with you after that?!" She said, dropping his hand as she got up from the couch just to stare down at him
"Hey, you did not say that!"
"It was implicit! Anyone with a brain would be able to figure out what I meant!"
"So now I don't have a brain?" He asked, frowning at her and she sighed, throwing her hands in the air and sending him a very annoyed look.
"No, just…" She said, rubbing her temples "You are the smartest person I know, if you didn't catch on the things I said, then you must think really low of yourself, and that has to stop"
"Jackie, I…"
"God, your parents really messed you up" She interrupted him, crossing her arms over her chest
He scowled "What the hell does that mean?"
"It means that they are worthless humans who try to bring everyone around them down, and the only person around them all the time was you," She said matter-of-factly "Oh yeah, Steven, don't look so surprised. You might not tell me things, but I'm not stupid, I know how to put two and two together"
"Wait!" He said, "What does that have to do with us kissing?"
"I kissed you because I wanted to be with you, okay? I still do, and I have been for a long time now" She admitted "And I think you're great, but you don't think that of yourself because of your parents, and you should! You let your paranoia take over instead of actually talking to people because it's easier for you to run away than to face the possibility of another person running out on you like they did. Why can't you just allow yourself to have good things?"
"It's not paranoia, alright? I'm just being realistic. Good things are not supposed to happen with guys like me, Jackie!"
"See?! That's what your stupid parents talking!" She said "I'm fantastic, I'm beautiful, I'm smart, I'm delicate, and you think you're not good enough for me, so you automatically assumed that I'd go back to Michael. But guess what, Steven? You're a pretty amazing person, and you're better than Michael in every conceivable way! I want to be with you, why can't you just realize that?"
"You actually want to be with me?"
"YES!" She yelled, "Haven't I said this like, a hundred times already? God, you're frustrating..."
She was standing in front of him, arms crossed, her face red from the small argument they just had. She looked bitchy and bossy, and he found himself unable to repress a small smile.
He didn't know what the hell to say to her, every time he opened his mouth to say something, the words wouldn't come out.
So he stood up and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her to him and crashing his mouth into hers, capturing her lips with his own and kissing her deeply.
Her hands were running through his hair as he pulled her as close as physically possible to him, their tongues tangled together in a slow, passionate dance.
"Now what?" She asked with a huge smile after they broke their kiss, her arms wrapped around his neck.
He gently ran his hands through her back and stole a few more kisses before finally answering her.
"I was thinking…" He started "Summer's about to start, we could sneak around for a while, wait until Kelso gets a new chick, and then…"
"Wait, why? Are you embarrassed of me or something?" She interrupted him, and he sighed.
"Jackie, why would I be embarrassed of dating the hottest chick in Point Place?" Hyde asked incredulously, and Jackie just shrugged "No, don't you shrug on me, alright? The only reason I suggested that is that I don't want anyone bugging us for now! It won't last forever, alright? We'll come clean to them when our relationship is strong and they…"
"We're in a relationship?" Jackie asked, a smile creeping into her face
He rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but smile back "Yeah Jackie, you're my chick now"
She bit his bottom lip "Say it again,"
"You're my chick" He whispered in her ear, pressing a gentle kiss to her neck afterward
She glued their mouths together again, and he sighed happily into her mouth.
Maybe he does deserve some happiness after all.
