Chapter 2: "She Is Your Tumour."
"He is adorable, he looks just like you Amelia" Meredith praised as she smiled brightly at the baby boy that was wrapped tightly in Amelia's arm.
"And I can already foresee that he will be as smart as his parents" Maggie chipped in with a wide grin as she glanced at the couple, thinking back how much they went through to come to this point. Sitting beside Amelia on the bed, Link didn't say anything but the smile was unremovable on his face as he gazed lovingly at the two most important people in his life.
"Have you decided a name for him yet?" Maggie asked curiously.
There was a pause and Amelia looked at Link for a while before fixing her gaze at Meredith, "Scout with Derek as his middle name" she answered softly before the silence fell again in the room.
A smile faintly appeared on Meredith's face, "it's lovely, I am sure that Derek will both be very proud of who you are right now. You had come a long way" she encouraged and Amelia only gave a nod before using a finger and wiping the tears that were lingering in the corner of her eye, "well enough about me. How's Doctor Webber? I heard that you guys were able to diagnose him."
"He is recovering, he will be fine but it's all because of Deluca. He was the one that found out what was wrong" Meredith confessed with relief that Richard was fine as she had already lost too many people in her life and she can't afford to lose another person."And speaking of Deluca, have you spoken to him yesterday? He doesn't look okay" Maggie voiced out as she glanced at Meredith who replied with a nod before finally admitting in loss of what to do, "I saw him last night, he needs help and I want to help him but I just don't know how yet."
Seeing the beaten look in Meredith's eyes, none of them said anything. Wanting to change the atmosphere and topic that was in the room, Amelia cleared her throat before quizzingly curiously, "and talking about last night, how was the wedding? How did my baby Leo look in a tux?"
Maggie shook her head casually, "there wasn't a wedding last night. They postponed it, something came up last night and they need to postpone it" she explained to which Amelia stared at her two sisters bewildered and confused, "what can be that important to postpone a wedding?"
Meredith merely shrugged her shoulders while Maggie didn't say anything, she had her suspicions but she knew well that she wasn't in any role to say anything, nor does she want to get involved in other people's business.
Looking away from his baby boy and at the three clueless women, Link chuckled slightly before asking, "you guys haven't heard about it yet?"
"Heard about what?"
"Well from what I heard there is a rumour saying that Doctor Altman cheated on Doctor Hunt" Link proclaimed casually as he touched baby Ryan's finger gently and softly. "No way" Amelia exclaimed with scepticism as she stared intently at Link expecting for him to continue.
Removing his attention away from the baby and at Amelia, he shrugged his shoulder before elaborating casually, "I am just telling you guys what I heard as they were saying that Doctor Hunt received a voice message from Doctor Altman and the content of that voice message wasn't good or let just say don't think it was intentionally for Doctor Hunt."
Shaking her head, "there is no way that Teddy will cheat on Owen" Meredith suddenly expressed as she remembers back how Owen and Teddy's history goes way back and how many years or other people did it take for them to be together. She doesn't believe that Teddy will just throw it down the drain like that.
"Maggie, you work with Teddy" Amelia suddenly said looking at her other sister who was strangely quiet and didn't say a word until hearing her name, Maggie looked at the three of them that were all staring at her, "me? We are both co-head of cardio, we talk about cardio and heart. We don't talk about personal life or who she's been cheating with?" She blabbed flustered without realising that she had made the situation worse and her reply was enough for Meredith to be able to know and detect that Maggie was lying, "so you do know something?"
Maggie didn't say anything as yes she knew that Teddy had slept with Tom, she knew that Teddy had cheated on Owen and it was wrong of her too but are they in any role to criticise or to be involved in other people's business. Knowing the longer she stays here or the more she talks, she will only expose more, she glanced at her watch "and look at the time, I forgot that I have to check up on this patient who just finished a heart transparent surgery. Excuse me" she lied as she hurriedly excused herself without even giving both Amelia or Meredith another glance.
Watching as Maggie left the room, Amelia only shook her before drawing her final conclusion, "she is walking away, she definitely knows something."
In all honesty, Meredith didn't care as her gaze fixated on the woman that had just given birth to a baby boy and she rested her hand on Amelia's shoulder getting her attention as she looked up at Meredith confoundingly.
"Amelia, I really am very proud of you and I know Derek will be too" Meredith spoke in a gentle tone and at that moment, she wanted Derek to be by her side, she wanted him to know that his younger sister is all grown up now.
"Get her a CT Angio, high chance she is suffering from brain aneurysm which is why she had a loss of vision and headache resulting in her fall today. Get ready to page cardio because if the patient does have an aneurysm, it might affect the arteries" Tom Korarick ordered as he walked through the corridor of the hospital without even stopping to look or talk to his protege resident, Blake Simms.
Nodding his head and holding the patient's chart as he walked in an equally fast pace to catch up with Tom, "I will page Doctor Altman."
The name of Teddy caused him to stop for a second as he shook his head, "no, not Doctor Altman. Page another cardio. She is off today, she isn't feeling well." He didn't wait for a response from his resident as he continued on his way, he wasn't thinking straight and he knew exactly the reason why as all he was thinking about today was her, Teddy. He could still remember last night where she was shaking and crying, how her tears flowed down her face and her stubbornness when he insisted that he took the day off.
"Okay" Blake replied as he looked at his mentor and Blake wasn't an idiot himself, he worked under Tom long enough to know that there is more than friendship between his attending and the cardiology surgeon.
Tom stopped in his pace as he stared at Owen who was standing by the counter, signing his name off a patient's chart. " Doctor Hunt" Blake greeted casually and Owen only gave a slight nod as a form of greeting before closing his chart to look up at the direction of the voice.
Tom and Owen met each other's gaze for the first time and none of them said anything but both were well aware that they each knew what was going on. Owen can only feel his anger growing inside him, he wasn't prepared to see Tom and he didn't want to see him as he glared at the man that was the cause of everything, the man that had sex with Teddy, the man that had torn the relationship between him and his fiancee.
The sight of Tom was enough to bring back the memory of the voicemail and he gripped his hand tightly as, without a further word or any more thoughts, he impulsively and irritatedly lashed out onto Tom and punched him strongly in his face.
The strong and sudden punch caused Tom to tumble backwards as he placed his hand on the bruised jaw while Blake protectively held onto Tom, "oh my god. Are you insane? Call security" He shouted furiously at Owen as he pulled Tom slightly further back away from Owen and the other residents quickly got involved, standing in between the two men or trying to hold back onto Owen, afraid he was going to lash out again.
Owen didn't say anything but his eyes glared at Tom, he wanted to shout at him, he wanted to yell at him and he wanted to punch him again but he knew he shouldn't. Angrily, he shrugged off the hands of the other attendings or residents and without a further word or an explanation, he just walked off.
Tom regained his composure as he touched the bruise that was on his face and he only watched Owen, he didn't punch him back, say anything or even attempt to dodge because he knows what the punch was for and he knows that he deserves it. As much as he doesn't like Owen or as much as he thinks Teddy is making the wrong choice being with Owen, it didn't change the fact that he had become the one man that he never wanted to be, which is being with a married woman, or an engaged woman.
He knew that Owen has every single right to be angry at him and he didn't blame him because Tom knew and understand the pain as he had once experienced too when he found his own wife in another's men bed which was why he shook his head when Blake asked, "do you want me to call security?"
Tom wasn't going to seek justice or sanctions and instead he was willing to be punched by Owen because Tom knew he deserved it.
"No, Jo. You can't" Link cried in desperation as he tried to stop his friend from going toward the room.
"Why not? It's a great idea" Jo rebuked back as she stood in front of the patient room and looked at Link, clearly not understanding or knowing as to why he is against the idea. Sighing of defeat, he put up his hand in a defeated position before even trying to reason with her, "look, I'm not saying that is a bad idea but let me just talk to Amelia first."
Jo looked at her good friend before placing one hand on his shoulder supportingly, "it's a great idea and trust me, I am sure that Amelia will love the idea of it" she expressed followed with a wide grin as without another word, she pushed open the door to the room.
"Jo-" Link cried out again trying to stop her as he watched her stubborn friend step inside and went straight up toward the bed. "Amelia" she greeted with a wide smile plastered onto her face and Amelia just gazed at the two of them confusingly. "Hey, what's up? Why are you two looking so strange? Why do you look like you just ran around the whole block?" She raised as she glanced at the sweat and the uncomfortable look that was on Link's face.
Before even giving Link the chance to say anything, Jo jumped straight to the gun, "I was just telling that Link, I will make a great godmother to baby Scout."
Those words caught her off surprisingly as Amelia repeated, "godmother?"
Link grimaced slightly as he can already predict that Amelia will be against it and again he only sighed before starting softly, "Amelia, we can discuss about it later-."
"No hear me out. Baby Scout will want a godmother, I will be an awesome godmother. And there isn't anyone else better than me right now, you have to admit it. You can't ask Meredith or Maggie as they are your half-sisters. Well technically not really sister but more like sister in law and stepsisters. You can't ask Doctor Altman because she is, well it's strange but she is the stepmother of this baby. I mean, I'm great with kids and I'm Link's best mate" Jo pitched out in a fast pace and looked at Amelia, trying to get an idea as to what her answer will be.
Amelia only just sat there with her eyes still on Jo as she tried to digest all the information before nodding "Okay, that sounds good to me."
Her answer took the two of them in shock as Link looked at her in astonishment but also with a smile on his face as this woman never failed to surprise him, "what?"
"Really? Just like that" Jo asked as she originally thought that she would need to fight to be involved with this baby nor did she expect for Amelia to just agree like that easily. Amelia shrugged her shoulders before widening her grin and answering their question, "yeah, just like that."
Jo clapped her hands together in joy, "thank you. I promise I will be the best godmother. You guys will not regret it" Jo promised in a confident voice as she happily turned around to leave the room but before leaving she rested a hand on Link's shoulder and whispered quietly enough just for the two of them to hear, "faith, believe in me."
Link didn't respond to Jo as he only listened to Jo cheerfully left the room, leaving only the two of them inside, "you don't have to do that" he whispered softly as he walked up beside her, still trying to figure out why Amelia agreed to it so easily.
"Well, Jo has a point there really isn't any other candidate and she seems very overly excited" Amelia explained as she beamed widely at the man that was gazing tenderly at her. She paused for a brief moment before holding out her hand, " Link, Jo is your best friend and this isn't just my baby, it's our baby" she whispered and her words were enough. Link grinned happily as he took her hand into his and squeezed it tightly, as her words were enough for him to know that she wants him in their life.
Sitting on the couch with her hands holding tightly onto the glass of scotch, she looked around the empty and cold house. Allison and Leo were both with Owen's mum and Owen, who knows where he is. She doesn't want to be here, but she doesn't know where else she can go. She had nowhere to go, she doesn't have any family here nor does she even have any friends, she wanted to go back to work, to bury herself with work and surgery but Tom won't allow her.
He insisted that she was to have today off and a part of her was actually grateful for that as despite how much she wanted to be back in the hospital, she was afraid of bumping into him, bumping into the both of them.
She won't know what to say to Tom as she knew she hurt him and despite his cheerful or joking demeanour, she knew that he was in pain too. But Teddy was most afraid of bumping into Owen, they haven't exchanged a single word since last night and she was afraid, what was she supposed to say when they saw each other. She knew she was at fault here, she knew that she had hurt the two men that both loved her, she knew that no reason can ever be justified for what she has done.
But it was all because things were starting to get complicated and Teddy doesn't like it or can even handle it as whenever things get complicated in her life the only thing she will do is leave, it has always been like that for her. Whenever things get hard, whenever things get complicated and whenever she sees a possibility of herself getting hurt, she will always need to find a way to numb the pain, to numb the fear and insecurity, a way to escape and leave, this has always been her way of coping.
Running away and avoiding it had always been her coping mechanism. Just like how she always pushes everyone away and always avoids or runs away when things become hard or when things are going well as she is afraid. She is afraid that it won't last, she is afraid that all these happy endings are merely just a facade.
It's not like she never tried, but just when she is always happy something will happen to tear it apart and take it away just like it was with Allison, Owen, Henry and Andrew. And she is done, she is done trying to believe that there is a happy ending.
She was done in believing that she and Owen can live happily ever after, she was done believing that she deserves to be happy.
She couldn't sleep and she wasn't feeling any pain, pretty much all she wanted right now was to again look at her baby boy. She strolled down the OB carefully and slowly to make sure that she wouldn't be hurting herself.
Amelia glanced at him, he was standing there staring at those innocent babies through the glass window. She knew him well to know that something wasn't right, she tried searching through his emotionless face but yet found nothing.
"He's adorable, isn't he?" She asked to get his attention as she walked up to his side, her question caused Owen to break off from his thought as he looked at her with a soft expression and he nodded in agreement.
"He is. I was meant to come by earlier and say congratulations but-" he reasoned but stopped by Amelia, "Owen, it's okay" she said assuringly with a grin and for the first time she saw traces of sadness in his eyes. She knew that she wasn't in any position to interfere or it was best for her to not get involved but she needed to know, "did something happen last night?"
Owen wasn't surprised by her question as he had also heard the rumour, not that they were talking or gossiping in front of him but he was still able to hear it and not to mention that he had punched Tom Korarick, he was well prepared that people were going to talk.
He didn't look at Amelia as he remained his gaze and focused on the little innocent babies, "you know I always visioned how our first kid will look like, I always wanted to know, will he take your colour eye or my one? Will it be blue or brown?" He had always wanted a family, he had always wanted children and he had always loved children but ironically all the women that he married never seem to want the same thing as he does. He can't help but ponder, if only Amelia had also wanted children, maybe things will not be what it is right now. Maybe he will be happier.
She let out a sigh from her lips, "Owen."
"Allison was perfect, I thought everything was perfect and it was just the life that I had always visioned, a life that I always wanted. I have Allison, I have Leo and I had Teddy. I had a child with the woman that I loved, my best friend" he confessed as he thought back to his words, he had Teddy but when was it that he started to lose her.
Taking his hand into hers, she knew whatever that is happening right now is eating him alive and she needs to know what it is, she wanted to help him, she wanted him to be happy.
"What happens?"
Her hand was all he needed at this moment, all he needed was someone to hold onto him and tell him that everything is going to be alright because he personally doesn't know if it will. He looked at her eyes for the first time and he could see the concern in her, "she cheated on me."
Frankly, she wasn't surprised to hear those words, she wasn't surprised to even know about it as she knew that Teddy had been acting strange lately, she seems more troubled or more in her own thoughts and as much as she doesn't like to admit it, she knew Tom well enough to know that Tom was also hurt and that he hadn't let go of Teddy yet. She knew Tom well enough to know that he is the man that will continue to fight for the things he wants regardless whether it is right or wrong.
"She cheated on me with Tom" he repeated again, "I'm so sorry" Amelia whispered softly with sympathy as she looked at the man that she had once loved and the man that caused her so many heartaches. She watched as he whispered helplessly, "and now I don't even know how I am going to face her."
Squeezing his hand tightly in a supporting manner, "you have to go home, you two have to talk. It's no longer just you and Teddy, there is also Allison and Leo in the picture" she reminded him as she watched him nodding his head sadly.
"Owen, do you remember how I told you before that Teddy was your tumour?" She asked and without waiting for Owen to say anything, she continued, "even if we were still together and even if this is your child right now. I know you still won't be happy because a part of you will always think what if this is the baby of yours and Teddy. Teddy will always be a part of your life. She is your tumour."
He stepped inside the quiet house, he wasn't prepared or ready to come back in or to even confront Teddy but he knew that he can't continue on running away as Amelia was right, it is no longer only between him and Teddy.
"Owen" she called out to him softly as she stood there leaning onto the counter for support, she wasn't surprised to see him because she knew well what kind of person Owen was, she knew that he would never abandon his kids. Her voice stopped him midway as he just stood there, he didn't turn back to look at her nor did he say anything.
There was a moment of silence between the two of them, both of them desperately trying to find a solution, trying to find a way. " I'm sorry" Teddy apologised in a broken tone, a tone with traces of remorse and pain. She paused as she tried to compose herself, biting herself strongly on her lip to prevent herself from breaking down again, " I'm sorry, can we please talk?"
"Talk? What do you want to talk about? What is there to talk about?" Owen demanded in a cold voice as he spun around to look at his fiancee for the first time. He looked at the woman that he loved, the woman that had yet also hurt her the most, he saw the defeated look on her and he knew she was in pain as well but he didn't care, he couldn't care. He was also in pain and it was killing him as he looked at Teddy and all he could see was her betrayal. She hurt him, she was the one that inflicted these pains onto him and she was the one that had broken their relationship.
Teddy looked away as she couldn't allow herself to continue looking at him, she couldn't bear to look at him staring at her with resent, she rested one hand on her forehead, "I-I'm sorry" she apologised again.
"I don't get it, I thought we were happy" Owen confessed as it still puzzled him and he has so many questions, so many why. He just doesn't understand what had went wrong between them.
His words broke her, hearing the desperation in his voice, "I-It's not like that."
The uncertainty in her tone, the fact that she had slept with a man that Owen detested and that she wasn't even willing to be honest with him and had lied to him, how can they move on.
"Then what is it?" He snapped sharply as his eyes stared penetratingly at her, he didn't even wait or give her the time to answer, "did you love him? Is it just sex or is there feelings involved in it? Is it just once or have you been going behind my back all these times? Did you even stop to think about me? Or about Allison, our family? Were you even going to tell me at all?"
There were so many questions, so many answers that he wanted to know but it was killing him, it was killing him to look at the defeated woman that was standing right in front of him. She was always confident, strong and independent, she was always someone that he can count on and lean onto. Teddy was always his person, someone that was always by his side in his darkest time and someone that had always supported him. They can finish off each other sentences, they can predict what each other is thinking but now he can't, she was the mother of his daughter, she was someone that he wanted to spend his whole life with, his fiancee, his best friend and his person but now all she is, is merely a stranger.
His face softened as he saw the tears that she was desperately holding back onto, " do you love him more than me?" He asked in a softer voice as he watched Teddy, this was the question that he wanted to know the answer the most, he wanted to know what she is feeling and what is going inside her head.
Owen's question caused Teddy to look at him, to stare at his face. She doesn't know how to answer this question, she knew what answer Owen wanted to hear but she didn't want to again lie to him. She desperately tried to search for an answer, an answer that would hurt him the least but yet no words were formed.
"But you know what, I don't want to hear it. I don't want to hear anything from you" he answered for her, thinking back that he doesn't want to know. He is already hurt, he is already in pain and he knows that he can't bear to hear her telling him that she loves Tom more. He needs to go, he needs to leave and to get away from her. Turning away from her, "Owen, please" she begged with desperation lingering in her voice.
" Can we just talk? Can we just talk about it?"
"I can't" he shouted, he knew he had his own issues, he knew he had his fair shares of issues but he tried so hard to change, he tried so hard to make it work. He wanted nothing more but to start a family with Teddy and he loved her so much that it hurt, it hurt loving her.
She was the one that broke it, she was the one that was wrong in this relationship, she was the one that went off to another man's embrace and she was the one that broke him. Teddy was someone that he trusted and she broke his trust, she broke his heart and his future. With anger and resentment in his eye, he turned back to stare at her coldly, "I don't want to talk, I can't even look at you right now" he snapped in a hostile voice.
As soon as the last sentence left his mouth, he regretted immediately and instantly saw the pain that was written on her face desperately trying to be concealed by her. He didn't intend for the last sentence to come out like that, for those hurtful words and for that tone.
Owen didn't say another word as he turned back, he opened the door toward Allison's room and stepped inside, closing the door behind him without even looking back at his broken fiancee.
His tone, his words and his hostility made her feel like a hard metal crushing onto her heart. She heard the door click closed and she broke down, she rested her two hands on the counter bench for support as she allowed her tears to slide down her face and she cried as she knew she had ruined everything.
