Working

"Why are you staring like that?"
"I'm not staring."
"You most definitely are. You're staring at Kakashi."
"Very intently too. It's creepy." Obito moved his gaze away from the masked one to scowl at Anko and Ibiki. As usual, she ignored his annoyance and continued eating her pasta. Ibiki was too busy reading to add anything else.
"I was thinking; screw you!" And he tossed a small tomato at her before she could make the obligatory comment about his brain over-heating.
"What were you thinking about?"
"It's a secret." He had promised Kakashi that he wouldn't tell anyone else about his secret and so he hadn't. This didn't stop him wondering about who it was that Kakashi liked. Clearly it was someone since he'd hesitated when they'd talked about it. And so he found himself watching the masked one to see if he acted any differently around specific people. So far he had been unsuccessful.
The only people Kakashi seemed to interact with were Asuma and Kurenai and he showed no signs of interest or jealousy when they acted couply. Clearly it was someone else. As Kakashi was so anti-social, he knew it would be difficult to work it out and so he really wanted to do so.
"Seriously, do you have a little boy crush?"
"No! Screw you!" Anko responded by throwing a bread roll at his head. This led to a small food war in which trays were used as shields. It wasn't until they were stopped by one of the teachers that he was able to look back at Kakashi. The masked one was staring at him with a raised eyebrow. It seemed he didn't approve of their food fights. This was confirmed later when they got to work.
"Can you two go more than one day without a food fight?"
"A food fight? Please. Those are for amateurs. We have food wars." Due to the sheer ferocity of their battles.
"I should have guessed…" And Kakashi went back to his book.
"That's a new one."
"It is. Because I finally finished the other one. In a few weeks rather than the few days it would normally take me." He gave him a cold stare.
"Hey! I make your life more interesting and you know it!" He looked quite cynical at that but he made no sarcastic comment.
"Why were you staring so much?" This made him jump.
"What? I don't know what you mean." Obito knew he was blushing now and this made him feel worse.
"All through lunch. It was really creepy." He placed the book down on the counter and turned so he was facing him.
"I wasn't staring." The fact that he was avoiding eye contact made it clear he was lying.
"Yes you were. Do you have a bit of a thing for me or something?" If anything his face went even redder.
"No! You're a huge asshole! I was just trying to work out who you like!"
"Who I like?" Kakashi looked taken aback at this question.
"Yes! I can tell you like someone. I just wanted to know who it was." Because Obito was an incredibly nosy bastard.
"I see…" Kakashi neither confirmed nor denied this. Instead, he picked the book up and resumed reading.
"…" Although he stared at him, there was no reaction. "…Well?"
"What?"
"Aren't you going to say anything?"
"Nope."
"But I wanna know!"
"Why?"
"Because I like to know these things!" In his view, most people would be interested.
"That's kind of strange. And I am not telling you."
"Oh come on Kakashi! I won't laugh or anything, I swear!" Kakashi looked him in the eye and he attempted to pout.
"…I suppose you wouldn't."
"I wouldn't! Heck, I'm supposed to be your friend. I'll even try to help you get with the guy!" He wasn't sure what he could do but as they were now friends he wanted to help.
"You'll help me? You will?"
"Of course!" Kakashi was giving him a really weird look. "What?"
"…Nothing."
"…Well? Tell me something!" Obito was leaning towards him with an eager expression on his face.
"…I do like someone." Kakashi sounded hesitant as he spoke.
"I knew it! And? Details?"
"…Are you a teenage girl?" Obito scowled. "I haven't liked them for that long. It's a pretty recent thing."
"Oh? Is he a nice guy?"
"I suppose? Nicer than most people."
"Attractive?" Obito didn't think he could judge a guy's looks, but he would try.
"Not especially. I like how they look though."
"Well that's the important part." Now he was even more intrigued. Not that Kakashi was shallow, but he was arrogant. You'd think he'd be picky about who was 'worthy' of him.
"And that's all you're getting."
"Awww!" This was still so little. "So… When are you going to tell him?"
"Never."
"Why? You could be happy together!"
"I don't think he'd be into guys." Oh. Obito hadn't considered this part. It could be a problem though.
"…Is he single?"
"Yes."
"And has he ever had a girlfriend?"
"No."
"Well then! How do you know? Maybe he's unsure." After all, the most important part in Obito's mind was that the two were compatible.
"I suppose that's true…"
"Just talk to him the next time you see him. And then tell me how it goes!" He was still waiting on Anko and Ibiki so it would be good to have something interesting happening.
"…I guess I'll have to now." Kakashi sighed and shut his book, placing it down on the counter.
"Good luck then." Kakashi laughed at him. "What?"
"…You'll find out." He glanced up to the corner with the camera in it and glared. "Come with me to the back room a second."
"Why?"
"Just do it."
"Ok…?" This was weird behaviour but Obito went along with it anyway. The back room was cramped and a bit messy but it wasn't too bad. Kakashi was unimpressed with mess but he didn't complain right now. "Why are we out here?"
"No security cameras."
"Ohh I get you." Deidara would probably be watching everything later. "Are we doing something?"
"Kind of." Kakashi seemed unsure.
"What?" Possibly he was going to tell him a little more now they were somewhere a bit more private.
"Don't… Don't freak out ok?"
"Why would I?" Kakashi rolled his eyes.
"I'll just say it then. I like you."
"Well yeah, we're friends." That was a random thing to say.
"That isn't what I meant."
"Ok…?" Kakashi sighed and rolled his eyes.
"You are an idiot. An absolute moron."
"Hey!"
"And after what we just talked about! I am trying to tell you that I love you, you stupid boy!" There was a moment of silence as Obito tried to work out the meaning of this.
"…Ok, what?"
"I. Like. You. You are the one I have a crush or whatever you want to call it on. Happy?" Kakashi had gone bright red under his mask but the default glare had returned.
"Oh…. Oh!" So he likes me… Obito stared at Kakashi for a second. Then he started to feel kind of weird. Almost light-headed. "I need to sit down."
"Do you feel ok?"
"No." And then he fell forwards.
-Page Break-
Obito found himself waking up, laying on the floor and glaring upwards. Something was bothering him. What this something was didn't occur to him until Kakashi leaned over and scowled down at him. Then he sat up very quickly, feeling light-headed again.
"Alive now?"
"Probably." Obito was very aware that he was near to Kakashi right now. And as a result, he was slowly going red and unable to look up at him.
"You just fainted."
"Yeah…"
"Your reaction to someone confessing to you… was to faint."
"It was my first time! I was scared!" And now he just wanted to curl up in a hole in the ground.
"You really are awkward." This was a bit rich coming from him but as he didn't want to look up right now, glaring was difficult.
"What about you? You are just as bad as me!" Though Kakashi was not as easily flustered.
"I still wouldn't faint." There was a pause. "So I'm guessing from that, that your answer is a no."
"My answer?"
"To what I just said. Jesus, your brain is even more dysfunctional today."
"I'm in shock!" No one had ever shown an interest in him before. He'd always believed he was unlikable. And then something else occurred to him. "You said I was 'not especially' attractive!"
"I was stating facts. I also said I found you attractive." Now Obito was looking up, he could see that Kakashi was blushing just as much as he was.
"But…. Why?"
"I don't know… You're pretty average really."
"That wasn't what I meant!" Though the knowledge that Kakashi found him attractive was making him more self-conscious. "Why me? You hate me!"
"Or maybe I just feel damn awkward being around you because I like you!" Kakashi let out an exasperated sigh.
"B-But… I'm weird!" As evidenced by the fact that he was now on the floor.
"It's not like you can choose!"
"…" Oh god, I don't know what to do! This had never even entered his mind as a possibility so he wasn't sure how to respond.
"Well?"
"I don't know what to say!"
"…You did just promise you'd help me with the guy I like." Obito froze.
"I… I did." That had been before he'd known that it was him.
"So…What do you think I should do?"
"…Leave the guy alone before he faints again."
"Will do." Kakashi sauntered out of there leaving Obito staring ahead with a blank expression.
This was definitely not what he had expected and now he was stuck. He was his friend so he didn't want to hurt him but he couldn't lie and act like he felt something. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place and really had no clue what to do. For now, sitting on the dusty old floor seemed like a good plan.
