Working

Disclaimer: Naruto isn't mine.

"And you're sure you have enough food?" In response to the fiftieth asking of the dreaded question, Obito let out a load groan and flopped down on the table. "I was only asking!"

"The kitchen is full, I have money, I have emergency numbers and Sasuke will be at Naruto's house. It's two nights, chill."

"I know! I just worry about my babies!" Obito had no time to move before he was grabbed from behind and his hair was fussed in a most aggressive way.

"No! Stop! I'm allergic to affection!" She kissed him on the cheek and gave his hair one last ruffling.

"Have fun."

"I'll try."

Mikoto and Fugaku had booked a holiday for their anniversary; a weekend away. For the first time, they were not being left with a babysitter. Obito and Itachi were going to have the house to themselves. More or less…

In a fit of madness, Obito had decided it would be a good idea to invite a friend to stay. Itachi was good company but he was often distant so he figured another person would make things more interesting. Anko had refused straight out citing prior commitments, as had Ibiki which led Obito to believe something of interest was happening. This he would be investigating later. Rin was visiting a family member and so this had left one person.

Kakashi had been surprised to be invited round but had agreed to it faster than expected. Knowing what he did about Kakashi's home life, he wasn't surprised. He was however increasingly nervous since he had invited him. Obito jumped when he heard the doorbell go. His heart should not be racing this much and he should not be scared of a friend staying the night.

"I'll be upstairs," Itachi announced as he passed Obito in the hallway. Curses he'll be no help.

"Hey." Kakashi was stood on the doorstep, mask-less and giving him a small smile.

"H-Hey." This made him feel odd and so he was staring like a crazy person.

"…Are you going to invite me in?" Shit! You complete ditz!

"Oh! Sorry! Yeah, come in. It's this way."

"I've been here."

"Oh… Yeah…" Kakashi moved into the hall and Obito waited until he was out of sight and in the lounge before he started slapping himself on the forehead. This he did for a while before he realised that Itachi was on the stairs and watching him with a perplexed expression.

"What?!"

"I needed some water." Itachi eyed him warily the whole way down the stairs, glancing back as he moved into the kitchen. The only comfort was that it had been his cousin seeing this and not Kakashi.

The white-haired one had perched himself on the sofa and smiled at Obito as he re-entered the room, attempting to look like he was somewhat normal and in some control of himself.

"What are the plans?"

"I thought we could watch a movie?"

"Sounds good."

"So I'll put it on then?"

"I guessed you would."

"Haha…" Why do I feel so awkward?

As they sat on the sofa with the movie starting up, Obito tried to remind himself that Kakashi felt just as weird about everything between them as he did, if not more so. It was the added guilt he had of being different around his friend that he couldn't stand. And then there was the weird way he felt when girls talked about Kakashi… Obito just wasn't right. And he didn't understand why either. Even Anko seemed to have more of an idea of what was wrong with him than he did.

Slowly but surely, he did manage to relax a little more as the film got into the swing of things. It was poorly made, badly acted and very funny without meaning to be. This was the best ice-breaker for a weird evening.

"Where did you even get this thing?"

"I found it in a box. It was made years ago I think."

"You think someone paid for this?"

"It was probably forced upon us." Another overly-dramatic death scene occurred on the screen and the pair started laughing.

"You can even see the wound peeling off!"

"And he just took his last breath but is still breathing! It's ridiculous."

"I do like it… It makes me feel better about failing drama."

"How do you fail drama?" Even Obito had managed to pass.

"By being 'wooden and unconvincing as an actor'. Apparently." Kakashi rolled his eyes.

"I just did a weird dance thing and told them I was using interpretive dance to show how the sea co-exists with us. I got an A." Kakashi stared at him.

"Is that a joke?"

"Nope. I even threw myself on the floor and waved my arms to look like seaweed." Kakashi snorted and held his hand over his mouth to jam the laughter back in. "Hey! It worked!"

"I think it's fantastic. I wish I could have seen it."

"Well… I could give you a sample."

"Do it." Kakashi was looking interested so Obito couldn't let him down.

With a solemn expression, Obito rose from the sofa and stood in the centre of the room. Remembering all the old moves he had used was easy enough since he had re-created it to amuse his other friends before; the hard part was keeping a straight face as he begun to sway in a convoluted fashion.

It got to a point when Kakashi was laughing so much, Obito couldn't even look him in the eye. By the time he reached the seaweed part, he also had to hold on to his stomach to stop his sides from splitting.

"You are something else."

"I know."

"I liked it. I can see why you passed."

"With great bullshitting. It's the only subject I can do that in and get away with it." He'd tried in some of his other classes but maths in particular was hard to screw around with. Too much logic.

"You're never boring." Kakashi spoke softly, making Obito tense up. He was looking at him with softened eyes and for a second his breath hitched in his throat. No one else looked at him like that.

"Thanks…" It was nice to hear. But then he had to deal with the growing awkwardness from receiving a Kakashi compliment.

-Page Break-

These guys are too similar… And way too smart! Itachi may have been younger but the conversation he was having with Kakashi was already more than Obito could handle. It involved something from chemistry and that was all he could tell. Aside from that he was lost. He instead chose to take another piece of pizza from the box and started shoving it in.

"Obito, you're getting it all over your face."

"I always do, get used to it." Itachi was watching with disgust; it was almost cute how disturbed he was by mess.

"Wipe your face."

"Never!" Childish? Him? Never!

"If that's how it is." What is he doing? Kakashi stood up on the other side of the table and picked up one of the napkins. Obito guessed what was happening in seconds but couldn't move in time to prevent having his face wiped.

Kakashi had such a gentle touch and was leaning in so close that Obito could only stare at him. This was a strangely intimate gesture for some reason though Obito wasn't sure why. It was something that people did all the time. Kakashi pulled back slowly, staring at Obito as he did.

"Sorry…"

"It's fine…" That awkwardness had returned with a vengeance.

"Do you two want to be alone?" Obito had temporarily forgotten that his cousin was there and swung round to glare at him.

"No! And it is time you went to bed!" This was a little contradictory and Obito was internally slapping himself on the forehead.

"But-."

"No buts!" You are to go upstairs young man or I will tell your mother."

"Ok." Even Itachi who was relatively fearless wouldn't risk upsetting his mother.

Once Itachi had gone however, Obito realised his mistake. He was now alone with Kakashi, an arguably worse situation than the one he had previously been in.

"So are we gonna have dessert?"

"Oh! Yeah, I got some cheesecake." He'd have to save some for Itachi to pay him back for yelling at him.

He prepared the food in silence, watched by Kakashi who sat at the table. Obito didn't want to hurt his feelings over this as he had done before so he was trying to step carefully. The pair ate in silence, Obito watching his bowl and praying for bed time. At least he could feign sleep to avoid difficult conversations then.

"This is good."

"Yeah it is…"

Obito nearly jumped when a hand suddenly clasped his and held on tightly. This wasn't a usual friend activity. Particularly his increased heart rate and body temperature. Things certainly weren't right.

"Kakashi?" I can't look at him, can I?

"You should calm down. You're too tense." Kakashi sounded so concerned about him and Obito found himself relaxing straight away. For some reason hearing it addressed directly made it manageable.

"Sorry I'm socially inept."

"It's fine. Just don't be scared of me, we're friends. I told you this."

"You're right." Obito slowly moved his hand so he could lace his fingers between Kakashi's and grip him back. "I don't like feeling weird."

"But you're so good at being weird."

"I'm amazing, that's why."

"I can't argue with that. I wouldn't love someone boring after all." And there was that word again. That annoying and addictive word.

"I guess I approve of your taste…" Kakashi's hand tightened around his for just a second and then he was released.

"Of course you do. Now let's get ready for bed."

"O-Ok."

It had been nice having that warmth wrapping his hand. The sensation of it still lingered long after his hand had been released.

Though Kakashi had managed to dispel some of the stress with his weird kind of magic, Obito still felt very aware of his presence as they made their way up to the bedroom. The spare bed had been laid out and so they changed. Occasionally Obito glanced over at Kakashi, looking away when he thought he was about to be caught.

That guy has a nice body… A really nice body… It was a self-esteem boost to know that someone that beautiful was interested in him. Obito had never bothered to think about the male form very much before this. But since it had been brought to his attention, he was lingering on it more.

Admittedly Obito had glanced at a couple of other guys in the changing rooms since his confession to get some idea of the average guy body. Aside from his own, he never really looked. Compared to others, Kakashi looked pretty good. He had nice proportions and had a fairly toned abdomen. The small amount of body hair trailing down his belly and disappearing into his trousers made Obito stare. Noticeably.

"It's rude to stare."

"I wasn't staring!" You liar!

"I forgive you. Well, I will if you let me have the bed." Kakashi smirked.

"You sneak!"

"It's the only way I'll get over you eyeballing me."

"Hmph."

"So does that mean I get your bed?"

"HMPH!"

"Thank you."

The bastard… He's so good at manipulating me… It's because he's so nice. I can't be an asshole to him. After the first few times Kakashi had been a jerk, he'd become more subdued. When you knew how nice he was underneath, you couldn't hate him.

Obito still made a show of getting onto the mattress on principle however. Kakashi simply watched the pouting and huffing with an amused expression, not bowing to the pressure.

"Goodnight Obito."

"…Night Bakakashi." He got a small smirk in just before the pillow landed on his face.
