Miranda stood on the sidelines watching Ben play a practice game with his team. She had her clipboard and was taking notes while the coach, and owners were conversing in the bleachers.
"Okay here's a play that we'll see what he's got." Coach Simmons acknowledged.
"I think it's amazing he's back so soon after that kind of injury." Bill stated.
"Okay so far, so good." Rod added.
"Come on Ben…let's go pick it up."
"You know he's got to be a little...
"Little stiff maybe, a little stiff."
"Yeah a little stiff right now."
"With game 7 tomorrow do you think he is ready to play?"
"Come on Ben show us you're ready."
"So what's it going to be?" Rod said.
"We need him Rod, we need him." Bill said.
"Yeah we got no chance without him."
That night Miranda walked to Ben's bedroom and knocked on the door. When she didn't get a response she twisted the knob and peered in. Seeing his room dark and empty her eyes darted to his bedside clock 8:06pm.
Miranda checked other rooms before checking the garage seeing his Lexus gone. She pulled out her phone and dialed his number when it went to voice-mail she frowned.
"Where could he be? He has a huge game tomorrow." She thought to herself.
"Huge game tomorrow." She repeated and it clicked. Miranda knew exactly where he was.
Miranda went to use the rest room and then grabbed her car keys preparing herself for the long drive.
After two hours she finally parked and got out. Miranda walked up and saw a figure laying on the court looking up at the sky.
Walking over she got down on the ground and laid back looking up at the sky as well. It was actually really beautiful.
"How did you know I was here?" Ben finally said looking over at her.
"You said you come here when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. So I figured tonight it would be."
"What if I get on that floor tomorrow and then its just like--
"You won't. You won't fail." Miranda told him seriously.
"What if I do?... What if my knee goes out on me?... What if I can't play anymore?
Miranda sighed.
"What would I be without basketball?"
"Benjamin Warren. You will still be you. Basketball is what you do, it's not who you are. And no matter what happens tomorrow you're still a champion. You're still a doctor and an extraordinary human being." Miranda expressed rolling on her side to look at him in the eyes.
Ben smiled widely and laughed.
"Who knows maybe we will work together one day." She shrugged.
"I would like that." He smiled.
"Okay good. Now help me up." Miranda laughed. Ben stood to his feet and grabbed onto her hand pulling her up.
Miranda brushed off her butt and began walking.
Ben grabbed her hand and pulled her back, pulling her into him. Wrapping his arms around her short frame. He leaned down to kiss her lips. Miranda opened her mouth to let his tongue explore her. She wrapped her hands around his neck and stood on her tiptoes to get closer to his mouth. Ben was sucking, pulling and nipping at her lips resting his hands on her full ass. She moaned against his mouth as they broke apart.
Miranda stared up into his eyes and quickly looked away. She didn't understand why she wanted this man as much as she did.
"Um I'm sorry I just-- Ben started but was cut off with a shower of cold rain.
Miranda screamed as it poured down. Ben grabbed her hand and pulled her towards their cars.
Both getting into separate cars. Miranda answered her phone as it rung.
"That rain came out of nowhere." Miranda laughed.
"It definitely wasn't on the forecast today." He chuckled.
"Did you eat dinner?" Miranda asked cutting the heat on.
"No. Its late now and will be even later when we get back."
"I could make us something quick like pasta." Miranda stated.
"That sounds good." Ben responded appreciatively.
Ben and Miranda talked on the phone the whole drive back. Ben loved the sound of her laugh it was melodic. He appreciated Miranda and her pep talks. She made him feel like a hero, but really he was just a ordinary man.
"It is game 7 of the Canada Basketball 15U/17U all stars finals. Hi everybody I am Mark." The announcer stated as everyone cheered and clapped.
Miranda sat in the bleachers beside Curt and looked up when she saw her friends.
"Hi." Miranda greeted happily hugging all of them. She needed to remind herself to thank Ben again for 10 seats.
"You ready to see all the hard work you put in?" Richard asked smiling.
"I am. He is going to do so good." Miranda cheesed as the game started.
The game was anything, but what Miranda expected. He wasn't playing like his self or to his true potential.
He missed shots, steals, assist, rebounds. It just wasn't looking good.
She could see the frustrated look on his face mixed with worry.
The coach called a time out and the two teams walked off the floor.
Ben sat down and pushed his chair away from his teammates clearly frustrated as he rubbed his face.
The water boy handed him water and a towel.
"I will be right back." Miranda whispered to Curt before getting up an walking off the bleachers.
"You are playing like you are afraid this knee is going to fail you. Well it won't." Miranda said firmly coming up behind him.
"Miranda I don't--" Ben started wiping his face with a towel.
"Listen to me. Anything you need to do, anything you want to do, you can do. Believe in yourself. You will not fail." Miranda told him sternly looking him in the eyes.
"Come on and let's go to work." She finished tapping his shoulder. Ben nodded and watched her walk off. Standing up he wiped his face with his towel one more time before walking over to his team.
Everyone huddled around discussing the plays when the whistle was blown signaling time up the team shouted "1, 2, 3 together."
"LETS GO." Ben encouraged running onto the court.
Miranda sat back in her seat and clapped.
"Is he going to be alright?" Curt asked.
"Yes he's fine." Miranda nodded.
The stadium erupted into fans screaming and clapping as the game started back up.
She could tell that Ben was focused now by the look on his face. He made every pass, assist, shot and blocked shots.
She loved to watch him dunk for her personal reasons. His muscles were on display when he pulled up on the hoop.
"That's what I'm talking about." James cheered hitting Ben on the shoulder.
The game was in the fourth quarter and it was 12 seconds left on the clock. Rattlers were down by 2. 106 to 104.
Ben dribbled the ball up the court as he was defended heavily.
Neither team had a time out left or a foul to give.
With 2 seconds left Ben shot the ball from the 3 point line just as the buzzer sounded off it flew into the net.
The crowded cheered and Miranda jumped out of her seat along with Curt. She hugged him tightly as they cheered for him.
"A game winner for Warren." The announcer yelled.
Ben was lifted up by his team as they all yelled.
"Twenty-two points Warren coming up with the game of his life." The announcer added in disbelief.
"Thank you." Curt said happily hugging Miranda again.
"Ben, Ben This way."
"Ben over here."
reporters and press shouted as cameras flashed.
Ben walked fully dressed in his suit towards Miranda and Curt smiling.
"Ben, phenomenal game man."
"Thanks, but you know it was a team effort." Ben acknowledged.
"Yeah but you were in your own zone." He added.
"Well you should have him on the show then." Ben's manager cut in.
"Yes, yes. You have to come do my show."
"I would love too." Ben called back while shaking different peoples hand.
"Hey, bro. I'm proud." Curt stated hugging him.
"Thanks bro."
"You were great." Miranda sung happily hugging him tightly. Ben wrapped his arms around her and hugged her back just as tight.
After a while they eventually let go not wanting to draw attention to themselves. "Thank you." Ben said sincerely looking her in the eyes.
"You're welcome." Miranda smiled brightly.
"No really. Thank you." He said seriously.
Miranda nodded and stared at him.
"She deserves a bonus right?" Ben asked Curt laughing.
"Yep." Curt responded.
Miranda eyes widened she wanted whatever bonuses he was handing out.
"What kind of bonus?" Miranda asked sultry.
Ben looked her up and down and smiled.
"How about dinner someplace really nice?"
"You better be packing something in that wallet because I'm not one of these salad eating chicks." Miranda laughed.
"I'll take care of you." Ben assured laughing.
"Mm-hm." She remarked.
"Don't I always take care of you?" Ben asked whispering in her ear. Causing tingles to shoot down her spine.
"You do." She smiled eyeing him.
"All right. Lets go." His manager said pushing him in the crowd.
Miranda felt giddy about dinner with Ben. Her and the girls found a dress for tonight and she was excited to put it on.
She got a manicure and pedicure earlier. Getting French tips and her toes painted white.
After completing her makeup. Miranda took her hair down letting the curls fall. Checking the time, she quickly got dressed and slid her gold opened toed stilettos on. She grabbed her clutch and walked out of her room.
Ben looked up as he heard heels clicking on the hardwood floor of his hallway. He watched from the bottom of the stairs as Miranda came into view. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her hair was down and curled. She was wearing an orange one shoulder gown with a split going up her thigh, showing off her smooth legs. The dress hugged her figure and showed off all her curves. She was short in stature, but the gold stilettos she wore made her legs look like they went on for days.
"Wow." Ben stammered and reached to grab her hand as she walked down the stairs.
"you look so beautiful." He complimented.
"thank you, you look very handsome Dr. Warren. "she smiled.
"shall we?"
"yes."
