A/N: Sooo yea been awhile lol. I know I said I'd be better at getting more writing done and I apologize wholeheartedly for not following through. Got busy with work and then just recently got another job again which is going to be much better for me in the long run. I appreciate everyone who is all still here and interested, and if your new then welcome and I hope that I can start getting back into this again so I'm not leaving you all waiting for months again. Love to all and enjoy! Also if you have any thoughts or ideas for future chapters I'd love to hear them!
Mel made her way back towards the med room, Gally following close behind. If Lawrence truly was turning and in the process of becoming a Crank, then they would need as much information as they could if they were going to try and help him, or at least attempt to. Mel didn't care much for him, but any possible outbreak could hurt them in more ways than one. She knew Gally saw him as a leader so he'd be more than willing to do what he could to save the dying man. She could only hope it would be worth it, for all of them.
Once they were inside, Mel was happy to see that Elise was still at her desk and didn't decide to close up early like she said she might. Elise looked over to them and greeted them with a smile, but looking at them further and seeing the slightly concerned but still brooding furrowed brow look on Gally's face, and Mel's crossed arms she knew something was up.
"Uh oh what's wrong. Are you guys alright?" She asked standing up ready to go into doctor mode, sleeves being pushed up past her elbows.
"We are.." Mel started glancing to Gally as she spoke before turning back to Elise to finish her sentence,
"Lawrence..not so much."
Elise looked between them again, Gally nodded his head in confirmation and she sighed. Mel frowned confused at that, Elise didn't look nearly as distraught or concerned as she should if it were anyone else. That type of discovery should've warranted the same reaction she had in the beginning when she thought something had been wrong with one of them.
Unless..
"You already know don't you?" Mel asked in disbelief. If she could cross her arms any further she would have.
Elise took a seat on a nearby bed and nodded, bringing her fingers to rub at her temple as she could feel the stress manifesting itself. Gally was now in a bit of a shocked mood as well.
"Yes I knew. I've been seeing him for the past few months now about it. He told me he was feeling strange, off. His temperature was a bit unnatural and he was showing very early signs, so I've been giving him booster shots that the crew found on one of the last supply runs at the abandoned facility they found you at." She said looking at Gally. Her mind was thinking a mile a minute at what she could do next to keep helping the man. She'll admit she wasn't his biggest fan like Mel and a few others, and she didn't always agree with his ways, but he and his men had done a lot for the city and she didn't want that to stop any time soon.
Getting up and going to her supply room she took stock of what she had and what she didn't have. Coming back she grabbed a blank sheet of paper and pen before scribbling a small list on it, folding it up and handing it to Gally. He unfolded it and took a look at what was written as she began to talk again.
"I have a good amount of the basics, I can use them to make him a serum. Something we were all working on in the city and the closest we got to making a cure before I started disagreeing with them, I have no doubt they would still be using the same formula today. It won't be long term though, he'll need more again eventually. But this will start helping with any effects he could be feeling or behaviors displayed. Unfortunately I don't have enough of everything, I'm going to need a restock on those items. I'm not welcome anymore into the big city, so someone is going to have to go in and get those supplies for me. If you can get them, then I can make sure he has more when he needs it.
Gally glanced at the list once more before folding it back up and putting it in his pocket and heading out the door. Mel and Elise both watched him go, Mel more surprised at how sudden he just left. She gave one last 'I still can't believe you lied' look at Elise before running out to catch up to Gally. He was already way ahead of her, Damn those tall legs of his she thought before breaking out into a small run to catch up to him, now having to keep a fast pace just to keep up with his stride.
"So what, your really going to try and just sneak past the wall and get what she needs? You don't even know where to start looking for them or what they even look like!" She exclaimed.
"Doesn't matter-" He started, eyes straight ahead of him as he headed for their rooms. "He needs them, and I'm going to help him."
"Ok stop, just listen for a second." Mel moved to stand in front of him and put a hand on his chest to make sure he actually stood still long enough for her to get her point across. He finally looked down at her and sighed as he waited.
"I get it, I really do. You feel like you owe him since they found you and saved you from dying, which we also had a part in. And then the whole Crank attack that happened. I understand how it feels to be helpless at times and then all of a sudden this person comes in and shows you the way. But you need to get it through your big head that going in there alone will be your end. Especially looking like that." Mel had felt the same at one point with Elise. Before she came along, Mel had felt that her only purpose was to live with survivors guilt being one of the few kids to not get taken and just wander their small community with nothing to work towards. But then Elise arrived and showed her there was more. Took her under her wing and taught her as much as she could understand. She would always be grateful for the Doc and if it had been her in this situation she would be more than willing to do what she could. But she knew they needed to be smart about it.
Gally frowned at her, "My head is not that big."
Mel's stern expression broke into a smile as she laughed.
"Really? Out of all of that the one thing that stuck with you is the shape of your head?" She shook her head before getting serious again. Gally only nodded before becoming serious as well.
"No I know. And your right, the moment I step foot in there I'll be lost as hell. But I can't ask you to go with me." He couldn't even begin to think of her getting lost with him in there. What would he tell Newt if he ever magically showed up?
"Good, because I wasn't going to ask anyways." She said with a smile before walking the rest of the way to their rooms, but instead of going for hers she walked past it and went straight for their supply room where they kept the extra clothes.
Gally could only follow and watched her confused as she rummaged through the piles of clothing. "Come on Melinda, we don't even know what would be waiting on the other side. What would Newt say? Also, what are you doing?" He knew bringing up her brother was a low blow, and to be honest he wasn't too sure what he'd say himself, but if it made her stay then he'd do it each time just to keep her safe. He'd rather get stung by a Griever again than openly admit how he was starting to feel for her. Out in the Glade the only feelings you could afford were for surviving. But now that he was free and able to figure out who he really was, he realized he wasn't as tough anymore as he thought he was, not in this new world he was still learning.
Mel paused in her search at the mention of her brother. The memory of him so distant she didn't know anything anymore. Who knew what he would say or do if he was here with her again. But she knew one thing, it was the same her father always said to her.
"I know he'd want me to try." Was her response before she finally found what she was looking for. She tossed a nicer looking coat without holes in it at him and some boots.
"Try those on, look to be your size." When she glanced up at him she saw he was still waiting for an answer as she pulled out her own coat and a better looking shirt.
"If we're going to be sneaking in, then we need to at least look somewhat like them. Which means cleaner and nice clothes. Pretty sure they don't wear dusty clothes like ours."
Gally had already started putting on the new shoes as he listened and raised his brows as he contemplated her words. He'd admit that this wasn't anything he would have thought of before trying to get inside the city. Having both shoes tied he walked a few steps to the side to test them out and felt happy with how they fit. He put on his jacket next and moved over to the mirror to admire himself. It amazed him how just a few details could make quite the difference. He did look much nicer than he had before.
Mel had finished changing her clothes as well and they dropped off what they didn't need in her room before heading out. She pulled out her picture and lightly ran her finger over it as she looked at the young face of her brother, deciding it would be best to leave it behind this one time to keep it safe.
"I'll be back.." She whispered to it before placing it on her pillow and followed Gally out.
As they walked towards the giant walls she wondered how they were going to get in. Gally tapped her on the arm to get her attention and motioned over towards the right side. She followed silently wondering what would change if they came from this way or not before she saw it the further they walked around, a small home in the ground.
"They just finished it. They found the best connection into the city was through the sewers so they used it as a tunnel and found an exit path into something they called a subway. Also this area doesn't get watched so we won't have to worry about getting noticed."
Gally pulled up the grate revealing the top of a ladder that led down into the dark abyss. Mel grimaced at the thought of walking through sewage, but if it was their best shot then she would suck it up.
"Ladies first." Gally offered waiting for her to move.
Mel looked down and took a deep breath as she started to climb down. No turning back now.
