Pancakes, a Naruto Fanfiction
Naruto © Masashi Kishimoto
A pounding headache and an acidic taste greeted Naruto Uzumaki waking up to another Saturday morning.
He rolled over on his pillow towards the bedside table to look at his phone.
Ten-thirty am.
What exactly had happened last night?
With one eye lazily opened, he picked up and began scrolling through his phone. He was greeted with a notification from Kiba, telling him to get back to his room safely. Another was a message from the hail-ride service he had used and the final bill.
Ugh, great. I hate it when they jack up the price like that just for a Friday night! Better hope my job pays me next week.
Naruto rolled back over and sat up, rubbing his head.
"Jeez, how much did I put away last night?" He mumbled, his mouth still tasting rotten from all the alcohol. "God, I'm thirsty and hungry…"
He sat up from his bed, grabbing a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt from the floor and putting them on. His senses were then drawn to something outside his room; the smell of something sweet infiltrated the air, and his ears picked up what sounded like humming.
"Hm?" His eyes looked towards the door. "Who the heck is up now? I know it's Saturday, but still."
It had been two months since Naruto started his first semester at Konoha State University. He had applied to study graphic design and was loving the course he was on. He had his best friend Kiba (who had picked to study zoology) come with him from high school, so he wasn't completely alone when he had joined.
Naruto had met new friends in the form of Rock Lee, Shikamaru Nara and Gaara. They had all been hanging out on respective nights out on the campus and gotten to know each other pretty well.
The living quarters were the Hashirama Building, and it's where he was living for the current semester. Naruto was on the first floor, alongside Kiba and a few others. Strangely enough, he had not met one or two of his roommates during that time. Sure, he greeted them in the hallway on the first few days, but none of them seemed to really say much.
The blonde left his room, walked down the corridor and into the open kitchen and dining area. Walking over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water, he closed the door, only to notice the back of someone, a girl, attending to the stove a foot or so away. The countertop next to her was already looking messy, covered in flour, a carton of eggs and a mixing bowl.
"Could you pass the strawberries?"
Naruto blinked. "Say what?"
"Could you pass me the strawberries, please?" The girl repeated, her back still turned to Naruto. "I gotta make sure these are perfect."
Naruto opened the fridge again, took the small bowl of strawberries from the top shelf, and placed them down the countertop next to the girl.
"Thanks." The girl next to the stove flipped a pan in front of her, catching a rounded object before it fell to the floor.
"Nice and fluffy…" She commented, reducing the heat. She turned around and laid her eyes on Naruto. She was roughly his height, with tanned skin, mint-green hair and soft orange eyes. She wore a white crop top which showed off her midriff with matching white leggings with a red stripe going down the leg, coupled with a pair of sandals.
"Oh," She began, recognising the boy standing next to her. "Hey, Naruto, what's up?"
"Hey, you're that girl from last night…" Naruto replied, slowly remembering where he had seen her face before. "It's…" He hesitated for a second. "...Buu, right?"
Feeling insulted, she pulled a face at him. "It's Fu, actually. And I was beginning to wonder what happened to you." She turned back to the frying pan, only to notice she had left the food almost cooking for too long.
"Ah crap!" She quickly grabbed a spatula, pushing the contents onto an empty plate.
"Pancakes?" Naruto questioned, the stack of food looking well-presented.
"Yep, perfect hangover cure in my book." She turned her head slightly "Would you like some? I always make too many."
Naruto nodded. "Sure, just let me rinse my mouth." He opened his water bottle and took a quick swig.
"Ugh," He groaned, the pit of his stomach doing somersaults "How much did I have to drink last night?"
Fu chuckled. "I guess you were hit pretty hard then huh?" She sat down at the dining table with her food, with Naruto joining her on the opposite end. Grabbing the bowl of strawberries and a small knife, she began slicing the tops off the fruit and placing the fruit back in the bowl.
"The fruit makes it better," She gestured, topping her plate with some fruit. "So, what do you remember? Cuz I remember at one point, you were all over the dance floor!"
Naruto looked down at his food and slowly cut a piece of pancake. "First off, I didn't know you lived here," He muttered, sticking some in his mouth and swallowing. "How long have you-"
"-last room, down the hall on the left next to the stairwell." Fu pointed with her fork, "I'm surprised you didn't notice me. But boy, have I noticed you," She nibbled some of her food. "You and Kiba really know how to keep a girl awake half the time."
"Yeah, sorry about that," Naruto said with another mouthful. The pancake was soft and had a fluffy milky texture. "Hey, this is pretty good. You cook a lot?"
"Thanks," Fu smiled, "And yeah, I love cooking. Had to learn if I was leaving home." She cut another strawberry, placed it on a piece of pancake, and ate it in one go. "Anyhow, you remember going to the pub right? I met you there with Tenten; she introduced us. Kiba was there with Ino, and you and I chatted most of the night before we started shots."
Naruto nodded slowly. "I see…" It was slowly coming back to him.
Kiba had suggested a night out after a long week of lectures for himself and the others. He, Naruto, Shikamaru and Lee had decided to hit the local pub near campus for a couple of rounds of drinks. What had started as a casual night out, had turned into a long night indeed.
They had met with Tenten and Ino, who had brought along their friend Fu. After some casual introductions and chitchat, they began a round of drinking games which included beer pong, fuzzy duck and Never Have I Ever. The fun carried on for a few hours, with Naruto finding himself flirting with Fu at one point.
The group eventually made their way to a nearby nightclub. Naruto and Fu ended up dancing together, but the combination of erratic movement, loud music and alcohol consumption had made Naruto's stomach turn. The last thing he recalled was being in the bathroom throwing up, with Kiba and Lee stopping him from falling over, trying to sober him up.
"Did I…" Naruto asked his attention back on the girl in front of him. "Did we..." He swallowed hard, only wondering what he might have done in his drunken state.
"About that," Fu carried on amusingly, "Yeah, we kissed."
Naruto's jaw dropped. "Wait what!? Look, Fu, I'm so sorry, I-"
"Don't sweat it," she replied, "I had a bit too much myself. Besides, you complimented me at one point; you said something like 'Your hair's so minty green it reminds me of ice cream'. I think that was cute enough."
She had a smug grin plastered on her face. "Besides, you're kinda cute anyhow, so I thought, I'd let you have that one."
Naruto turned completely beetroot at this moment. Both of them had kissed one another while drunk, and here she was acting like it was a casual moment between couples?
Damn this girl is so weird.
"Fu...I...er…" He found himself in a daze, locked in her soft orange-coloured eyes.
Just then the two of them were interrupted by another student walking into the kitchen; a boy with shaggy brown hair, dark eyes and pronounced canine-like fang that could be seen when he opened his mouth to yawn.
"Morning," He yawned, rubbing his eyes, "What's going on in here?"
"Kiba, when did you get back?" Naruto asked his friend.
"Long after you did," Kiba replied halfway between yawning. "Damn dude you were a wreck…"
Fu raised her eyebrow at his remark. "You're one to talk, dude. You got back at three am, cooked pasta then tried scrambling an egg on it and spicing it up! Christ, what were you thinking?" She pointed to the sink where a dirty frying pan and an open canister of cajun spice lay.
"Seriously Kiba, clean up later. It smells horrible."
"But," Kiba cleared his throat, "It was delicious and I fell asleep well cuz of it and…" His sense of smell distracted his train of thought. "Are those pancakes I smell?" Rubbing his eyes again, he couldn't help but notice how close the other two were sitting together.
"Damn Naruto and Fu? I knew all that flirting last night led to something…" He shot his friend a wink. "Good going bud."
Fu let out a huff. "Jeez Kiba, don't make assumptions! Go have a shower or something, you stink of spice." She fanned her hand in front of her face dishearted.
"Hmph!" Kiba turned his back in disgust and started to walk away. "I'll catch you lovebirds later."
Naruto rolled his eyes. How did he end up in this situation?
"So, anyway," Fu carried on, "You were pretty gone by about one am; we got you a ride back. One of the caretakers must've let you in. In your state, there was no way you could have used the access card to get you in the building. But you managed to get to your room so that's something."
The blonde rubbed the side of his head, still feeling a pounding headache. "I think I saw someone. He was wearing sunglasses, messy hair…"
"Must've been Shino," The girl replied, "That guy stays up to all hours of the morning." She took another bite of food. "Who knows what he's working on."
The two sat quietly for another minute while they ate their food, only for Naruto to respond when he had another question.
"So, how was my dancing? Did I look like an idiot or what?"
Fu giggled. "Yes, Naruto, you did look like an idiot." The response instantly made the boy facepalm himself.
"But I'll admit, you had a fun way of showing off. Heck, even Tenten and Ino were surprised at how insane you looked."
Fu took a moment or so to study Naruto's facial features. Something about those deep blue eyes had an attractive charm to it, coupled with his messy blonde hair.
I have to admit, this goofball is kind of cute.
"Fu, sorry about kissing you while drunk." Naruto scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "I don't usually get that plastered! Must've been that vodka when we got to the club. Seriously, what do they put in that stuff?"
"Potatoes," Fu answered flatly. "Potatoes, and a lot of other stuff…"
Naruto looked puzzled. "A vegetable does that to you? I never knew that."
"Again, don't sweat about the whole kiss," She gestured, "I'm just as guilty as you. Besides, you were really sweet looking after me last night as we walked to the club." She leaned over and playfully nudged him on the shoulder.
"Cheer up. It's Saturday." Fu stood up to stretch. "Best day of the week in my opinion."
Naruto could not understand why Fu was being lax about the whole situation. If this was any other girl, they would probably have him hung, strung and quartered by now. Something about Fu was different, he just couldn't put his finger on it.
The conversation last night had been flowing non-stop. Both Naruto and Fu had found themselves talking about literally anything and everything. Naruto had found out that Fu had been studying Film & Media, which the former had found intriguing. It wasn't before long they found themselves talking about favourite bands, places they wanted to go to around the world etc. It had been some of the best times that either one of them had had.
Naruto couldn't help but admire her figure as she stood up and went to the fridge. Her exposed midriff was slightly toned and her tanned skin looked immaculate.
She's...oh god where do I even begin? He felt his cheeks tinge pink.
"Milk?" She offered with the bottle in hand, breaking him out of his gaze.
"Yeah, sure."
The two finished their breakfast momentarily. Fu got up from her seat to take the plates away.
"Hey, Naruto,"
"Hm?"
She walked over to him, wrapped her arms around him and gave him a small peck on the cheek. "I just wanted to say, thanks so much for last night. I had such a great time with you. You're an interesting guy."
The blonde, surprised as anything, stood up to return the gesture, wrapping his arms around her waist.
"Thanks, me too." He said softly, "And thanks again for breakfast! These were some of the best pancakes I've ever had!"
Fu stepped back and couldn't help but blush. "Well, if you smile nicely at me, I might make them for you again."
She cleared away the last of the crockery. "Hey, I was going to go for a walk, would you like to join me?"
"Really?" Naruto questioned. It was weird enough she shared her breakfast with him, but now she was asking to join her for a walk? Then again, it wasn't like he had anything better to do.
"Yeah, for real. I was gonna go to the record store in town and check out what new music they have. Perhaps you can show me more of the stuff you were telling me about? Industrial rock, you called it?"
"That's right. Circle of Dust."
"Cool," Fuu beamed with another smile. "Shall we?"
The blonde nodded. "Sure thing, Fuu."

A/N: Hope you enjoyed this little one-shot. Made this a little challenge for me and the fact that there isn't enough Naruto x Fu fics out there!
The little scene based on Kiba making eggy pasta, is actually based on a true story. When I was living away from home for university, one of my flatmates returned from a night out. We had gotten in, claimed he was hungry and started cooking what was left in the cupboards. Yeah, it was a crazy night.
