The newly reunited siblings had spent the rest of their time with small talk. Newt telling his own side and view of being in the Glade, while also a short recap of how they met Brenda and Jorge, losing their friend Minho which was their reason for being here.
Mel's hand reflexively went to her necklace as he finished his story. He noticed her movement and looked at the butterfly around her neck curiously.
"What is that?" He gestured to it for reference.
She looked down at it and smiled before moving to take it off and placed it in his hands so he could see better.
"It's a butterfly. You got it for me for my birthday, before all of the virus stuff started." She explained trying to remember any small details. "You used to tell me that all butterflies were magic. That if you could catch one, you could make a wish. Then when you set it free it'd fly off to make that wish come true."
Newt smiled at the thought of what his younger version had said. Imagining both of their younger selves standing in a field trying to catch as many as they could.
"I remember I spent days after that trying to catch at least one. I got upset when I couldn't, so to make me feel better you just said that they were busy fulfilling other people's wishes."
He handed her back the necklace and watched her put it on right away. She let out a sigh, feeling even more tired than before but was still finding the energy to keep going.
"After you were taken and I was alone. I wished on this thing every day instead. Hoping it would somehow come to life and take off to make it come true, to bring you back to me." She gave a soft laugh at her childish self.
Newt thought a moment before replying, "Well it only took so many years, but here I am. Like I said before, it won't be so easy this time to try and take me again."
Mel grinned as she nodded, believing his words.
"I remember seeing a butterfly once. In the Glade, towards the edge of the backside, where all our trees were. I came across a small patch of flowers, don't even know how they could've survived without the constant sunlight. But I remember just sitting there admiring them, when all of a sudden this butterfly came out of nowhere and landed on one of it's petals. And it just sat there, as if it was trying to tell me something. Then it was gone."
She contemplated his words, trying to decide for herself what it could have meant, but they were interrupted by Gally showing himself, glancing between the two before clearing his throat. "Sun's going down, time to go."
Newt nodded and stood, followed by Mel as she went after them confused. "Go where?"
"After you took off earlier, we went and talked to Lawrence. We're going to go into the city. We know that with all the Bergs we saw going in and out of the city meant something. And now that they're here, we know why." Gally explained as they walked to go meet up with everyone else.
Mel only shook her head. "You know what it's like in there though Gally, you said so yourself we can't get anywhere near those big buildings without alerting any sort of security."
"Yea well now that they're here I have a plan. Well part of a plan, and it doesn't work without Thomas."
"Then let me come with you" She offered figuring they could use the help.
Gally didn't hesitate as he refused. "No not this time Melinda. You know the smaller the group the better our chances at blending in."
Mel only scoffed in disbelief, "That's not fair and you know it."
"Mel, he's right." Newt said bringing himself into the discussion. "We'll be alright, Gally knows the way and I trust him, mostly."
Gally nodded in thanks, "It's only reconnaissance. I promise once we're ready to make an actual move, you'll be right there with us." He placed his hand on her shoulder for reassurance. When she gave in and nodded her agreement he wrapped his arm around her and they finished the last of their walk towards their small entrance into the sewer.
Thomas, Brenda, Frypan and Jorge were already there waiting and ready to go. Thomas gave a look between Mel and Newt before turning his attention to Gally who had already opened up the hole. Mel turned to Newt and gave him a hug telling him to be safe. She could hear one of the boys, Frypan she assumed, also telling Gally to keep them safe as well.
Down the three of them went, Mel watched until they were long gone and down inside the tunnel. She looked back up to see the other three strangers watching her unsure of what to do. Sighing and realizing she now had to play tour guide she nodded for them to follow her.
"C'mon I know where we can wait."
She had headed back towards Lawrence's base but kept walking once inside. She remembered a room Gally had shown her once before, papers and maps hung on the walls. She thought of it as a type of meeting room. Everyone took their seats and silence filled the room. Brenda and Jorge next to each other, looking at everything inside the room, meanwhile Frypan just looked worried.
"Don't worry, Gally will look after them. He's been in there more times than anyone. They should be in the city any moment now." Mel assured him with a smile and he reciprocated the gesture, easing his shoulders.
"What happened to him, you know, how did he end up here?" Frypan asked wanting to know how his friend survived.
Mel thought back to that day, hard to believe how many months ago it was now. "Well, he told me how he hurt someone when you guys got out, Chuck.. and in return he was hurt back. Some guys from Lawrence's group found him. Every so often they'll go on scouting missions, finding whatever they can to benefit us all. They saw he was still alive and brought him back here. Me and Elise, our doctor, patched him up and helped him get better. Eventually he started earning his place among us and became a big help."
Frypan smiled glad to see that his friend had found his place and was happy. They all then went around sharing stories for Mel and telling their sides of meeting everyone and how they came to be here. It was a warm feeling for Mel. Meeting these people and being able to share and connect with them. She had her brother back and gained a new family with it. She was no longer alone, and she was thankful.
A/N: Apologies it's a shorter chapter after the last one. We're slowly getting towards the end now so they should be decent sized and will do my best :)
