Mel made sure to stay close to buildings in case she needed to quickly hide again. In a way she was thankful for Lawrence and his goons becoming a distraction, so all focus was on them and everyone that had come with him to infiltrate the city. The sound of shooting and yelling was getting closer as she continued to move. At this point she didn't even know where she was anymore and was trying her best not to lose hope at finding them. Hoping that her leaving Brenda and the kids wasn't a mistake.

Knowing her brother was still out there, along with her.. boyfriend? Was that a proper word to use when it hadn't even been properly discussed yet? Along with Gally, she knew she wouldn't be able to rest easy until she could see them and see that they were safe.

The streets started to open up more and she'd have to cross to get over to the next path. The fighting and flames getting closer. She ran as fast as she could to keep herself from being seen and ducked down a moment. She then peeked up to see what was happening. Shooting and bloodshed. What a waste, she thought. Lawrence really could have done something big and better, but he resolved to violence.

Seeing all the chaos made her stop and wonder if this really was all a waste. Tears pricked her eyes as she fought to control herself and not turn into another sobbing mess. She had to admit that she hated crying as much as she had the past few days. Being seen as weak, was something she always tried to avoid living in the remains of the city. She always had to remind herself to be tough. But when Gally came along those walls of her own had cracked. And although she wouldn't admit it right away, she knew it was for the better. To finally let the emotions in again.

Ready to give up and turn around, she then noticed two running figures coming her way. Leaning forward to look closer, she saw that it was Gally and someone else she didn't recognize. Was that Minho?

She ran forward, "Gally?! Gally!"

"Mel!" He responded as he saw her silhouette come into view. He grabbed her and held her tightly against him for a moment before pulling away to look at her. Why was she alone and not with Brenda and the kids? Why didn't Brenda mention it over the walkie?

Minho just looked between the two confused before speaking up, "Gally, we don't have time for this." his friend reminded him, knowing they needed to get to the others quick.

"W-What's going on, where's Thomas and Newt? Where's Newt!" Mel asked frantically looking between the two. Minho had easily put the pieces together and made the connection that she was the long lost sister they mentioned to him as they were moving, running from WCKD as far as they could before the walls got blown and they split up.

Gally put his hand on her shoulder to steady her and made them all start walking, "Jorge came back with a berg, he grabbed Brenda and the others, and they're coming for us too but we have to get there as soon as possible. We need the serum."

"Serum, for what?" Mel asked confused, her hand instinctively going to her bag as she watched Gally with growing concern. His furrowed brows and Minho's look of uncertainty not helping her feel any better.

Minho spoke up this time having enough of the back and forth between them, "For Newt, he needs it." He was ready to leave them both behind if it meant saving one of his best friends in time.

Mel felt her world freeze for that second. Newt needed the serum. But if he needed it, that meant...

No.

Without a second thought she took off running the way they came. Gally cursed and followed after her, shouting at Minho to keep going. "Mel wait! We're going the wrong way!"

"I have it!" Was all Mel said as she pushed herself to go faster.

A million thoughts ran through her mind. How did he get sick? Why didn't he say anything? Who else knew?! She cursed herself for not seeing any signs. But if she didn't see any, did that mean it was all just recent? She felt betrayed in a way for being kept in the dark.

She wasn't sure even where she was going, but she followed her instincts as she took a sudden turn, trying to guess where they could be. She didn't even know if Minho and Gally were still behind her or not. But she couldn't care at the moment. All she cared about was her brother.

"Thomas? Can you hear me?" A loud echo made her stop, looking around to see where it came from. The voice seemed familiar. Teresa?

"I know you have no reason to trust me.." It continued, realizing she was speaking over some type of intercom system. "But I need you to come back. Thomas, you can save Newt. There's still time for him."

Those words made Mel more alert. What did she mean by that?

"There's a reason Brenda isn't sick anymore. It's your blood, do you understand? She isn't sick because..you cured her."

Thoughts traveling back to their group story-telling. Going over their events that led them to the Last City. Brenda explaining briefly how she got sick and then wasn't. Mel couldn't believe it.

"All you have to do is come back and this will all finally be over. Please, just come back to me."

It went silent again. Her voice gone in the wind. She contemplated Teresa's words a moment, was Thomas really their answer to all of this? Did he truly possess the capability of being a cure for their dead world?

She snapped out of it as she heard her name be called. She turned to see Gally finally catching up. Shit, Newt!

Mel took off running again realizing she still needed to find her brother. Damn Teresa for distracting her. She turned another corner and looked all around trying to determine where they could be. She kept going until she could heard the semi-distant sound of shouting. She paused a moment, listening as it was different to the noise from everywhere else. Taking a chance she followed it all the way to a more open area.

She stopped as she saw Thomas fighting Newt. No, it was more like fighting him off. It was already happening.

"Newt!" Mel shouted and ran forward closing the distance between them. "Newt stop!" Thomas glanced at her as he continued to try and stop his friend from stabbing him with his knife.

Mel flung herself on her brother and tried to pull him back but all she got in return was a growl and he turned to throw her off of him, slicing her arm with the knife in the process. Mel grabbed her arm as she landed on the ground and hissed as she checked to make sure it wasn't too deep a cut. The sight of her brother, the veins that started to crawl along his skin, it was terrifying in the moment. But she had to put it aside as he began to stalk towards her but Thomas tackled him to the ground to prevent him from hurting her and they were back to how she found them.

With shaky hands she ripped off her bag and reached inside. She grabbed the vile of serum, as well as an antibiotic syringe that she was very glad to have grabbed when she took the other supplies. She dumped the contents of the syringe and loaded the serum in it's place. She froze as Thomas screamed out, the blade making contact with his skin. Mel hurried as fast as she could with her trembling hands, picked herself up just as Thomas and Newt stood again as well. She tried to gauge for the right moment before rushing forward and jabbing the needle into his neck. Plunging the contents inside of him.

All movement stopped as she pulled away, stumbling to the floor as she watched Newt slowly turn towards her, his eyes clearing just the slightest. Thomas stepped forward and caught his friend as he couldn't stand any longer. His breath coming back to him as the fog started to clear in his mind and his thoughts slowly began to make sense again. Thomas checked him over before rushing to Mel to make sure she was ok as well.

Mel couldn't take her eyes off of her brother. The sight she had seen in the last minute, it all felt like one giant nightmare. The tears finally finding their way down her face as all the emotions hit her at once. Newt was finally grabbing ahold of himself and crawled forward a few inches toward her, the same horror in his eyes. Gally finally caught up, just as Minho, Frypan, and Brenda had appeared from the opposite side. All eyes on the three of them.

Thomas stepped away as Gally moved to help Mel while the others gave their attention to Newt and helped him up. He gently held her arm to make sure she wouldn't need any stitches. She nodded to him that she was alright, the cut already started to clot and stop the bloodflow. She hadn't realized she was still shaking until he had grabbed her hands and held them firmly. She finally broke her gaze and glanced up at him, her eyes searching his before she broke down. All the adrenaline leaving her as she silently cried in his arms.

She almost lost her brother again. Couldn't even fathom the idea of what she would do if anything worse had happened. Gally just held her and let her express it all as she sniffled and tried to compose herself.

"Where's Thomas?" Brenda asked interrupting everyone in their moments. They all looked around to see he was in fact missing. Mel thought back to Teresa and what she had said to him over the speakers. Had he gone to find her?

Gally spoke up next being the voice of reason, "Lets all get back to the Berg, we can find him better that way."

Everyone nodded in agreement. Gally helped Mel while Frypan and Minho helped Newt, each arm wrapped over their shoulders as they walked at a steady pace. She watched the backside of her brother as he limped along. The serum still working it's way through him and helping him get his bearings back. She knew it was a temporary fix, but they had plenty more if he needed it. She just hoped that they could find Thomas and he'd be willing to help them make a cure for him. She wondered if that's what he was doing now and went in search of Teresa for. To help make a cure, to end all of this once and for all.

The fighting had continued to move deeper into the city so their path was more clear for them, aside from all the debris and destruction they left in their wake. They finally reached the Berg, where Jorge and another man appeared to help them board. She could see the children all in their seats and smiled to see them all safe. Everyone else took their own seat or held onto something steady as they lifted off and started their search for Thomas.

A/N: What a chapter! Since I didn't get any votes I decided to go with the happier end since I'm sure that's what we all wished happened in the books and movie anyways. I will still post alternate chapters in case anyone is interested in having the other ending instead and can read it all differently. Please let me know what you thought. Like all writers on here reviews are what helps us the best XOXO
