VI - The Trainer of Heroes: Age 14-15

5 year later

No one P.O.V

Dust filled the air, covering the clearing with a thick layer of particles. It was difficult to inhale, and Perseus' breathing was already erratic. He was sputtering and wheezing as he lay on the ground, caked in dirt and sweat. The perspiration dripped down from his hair, threatening to sting his eyes.

"Do you need help young Perseus?" Chiron asked amusedly, with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

"No, I'm more than capable of getting up myself," Perseus replied. "Stupid horse man." He muttered under his breath. With a sigh, he hauled himself up, turning to face the centaur who had helped him for 5 years. He groaned, before bending down, his hand scrabbling in the dirt and grass for a few moments, before he found his sword. Picking it up, he frowned at it for a moment as he always did. The sword had been a gift from Chiron for his fourteenth birthday. As much as Perseus appreciated the gesture, the sword just wasn't right for him. He couldn't explain it, but try as Chiron did, he could not find a sword that felt truly balanced in Perseus' hand.

Ignoring the pain in his limbs, he turned to Chiron, before readying his sword. Already they had been at this training for hours, and yet Chiron persisted; he needed to improve his swordsmanship.

"What's the matter Perseus? A mighty spartan can't take down a meager old man?" Chiron goaded. He knew that Sparta was a soft spot for Perseus' and that was the whole point. Warfare was just as psychological as it was physical, and Chiron refused to let Perseus or any of his pupils die because they got their feelings hurt in a fight.

"You know, this would be a lot easier if I had my shield." The young spartan said, slowly approaching his mentor.

"Exactly. A spartan you may be, but you do not always get to dictate when and with what you will fight. Be ready for anything." Chiron said, before swinging suddenly at Perseus' head.

Startled, Perseus barely had time to drop below the strike, but he adapted quickly. Using his lowered position to his advantage, he extended a jab towards Chiron's front hooves, forcing him to skitter away. Without allowing him time to recover, Perseus pressed towards Chiron, a flurry of steel as he attacked him. Chiron gave ground, but he was successfully deflecting and avoiding all Perseus' strikes all the same. Perseus began to grow frustrated and pressed even harder. He scanned for an opportunity, and finally, Chiron slipped. As he stumbled, Perseus struck with as much force as he could, looking to end the fight. He knew his strike was true, yet before he knew it, he was disarmed, on the ground once again.

"I thought I had you that time old man." He whined. Today had been a rough day. Normally he could win sometimes, but today Chiron had ruthlessly battered him into the earth time and time again.

"And that is why you failed Perseus. You saw that I slipped, and you overextended yourself, looking to end the fight. You underestimated your opponent's ability to recover. Always seize an opportunity, but don't risk everything just for a chance. That's all for today.

Chiron helped him up. And promptly threw him in the lake next to them with a grin on his face. Perseus laid in the lake for a few minutes before rising out of the lake sitting on a giant wave holding 3 balls of water floating in the air and at the same time had 7 smaller balls floating around his head like a halo. Chiron Marveled at his Proteges power. The kid was only a legacy and he was more powerful than many of the children of Poseidon he had seen.

Over the past 5 years, Chiron and Perseus had developed a strong bond. Chiron had seen Perseus improve largely. Perseus was skilled at using twin daggers, a bow(surprising for being related to Poseidon), He was skilled at swords though Chiron continued to be aggravated by not finding the right sword for the teen. His water powers were also strong. Like right now. Chiron finally realized the danger he was in.

"Your gonna get it, Old Man," Perseus smirked evilly.

"Perseus, let's talk about this, I was trying to heal…"

The wave started to crash down on him as he tried to doge water balls being sent at. He got hit and was knocked over. He looked up. The wave had turned into a beautiful horse made of water. Which promptly grabbed him with it's mouth and swallowed. Everything crashed back into the lake and Chiron found himself wet but unharmed on the shore. He muttered something about. He's getting too old for this or something as he trotted away to find a place in the sun to dry off. Perseus started laughing. He had tons of energy since he was drawing from a water source.

Perseus used the water to gently place himself onto the shore then ran off to find Chiron. He found Chiron laid down on a rock in front of the cave. Perseus came and sat down next to him.

"5 years certainly has flown by. You'll be 15 tomorrow." Chiron said happily.

Perseus froze and Chiron looked at him concerned. "What's wrong Perseus?"

Perseus looked away from him. "I… I have to leave tomorrow."

Chiron looked at him shocked, "Why?"

"Because when my father dropped me off here he told me that in 5 years he would return. And I would get to go home to my family."

Chiron frowned "you told me you didn't have a family anymore, that you were disowned. That your father found out you weren't his son."

Perseus sighed, "But they were only my mortal family."

"You're a child of another god?"

Perseus nodded.

"And that's why your mortal family disowned you?"

Perseus nodded again.

"Which god?"

"I'm not allowed to tell you."

"Why not?"

"Because you are Chiron, Trainer of Heroes, and Brother of the Olympians."

He sighed. "What if I swore on the Styx to never tell anyone about you or your godly parent."

Perseus looked at him for a second thinking. "I could ask."

'Dad?' Perseus thought 'can I tell Chiron the truth if he swears on the Styx.'

Perseus heard nothing back for a minute and thought that he wouldn't respond. I was about to turn back to Chiron when I heard his voice.

'Yes, but only because he took care of you well for 5 years.'

Perseus grinned 'thank's dad.'

I turned back to Chiron and told him my dad said yes. He looked at me shocked. "You can communicate with your father mentally."

"Well I am his first son so…"

Chiron shook his head "I really shouldn't be surprised anymore."

I gave a lopsided grin. Then turned serious "first the oath."

Chiron nodded. "I swear on the river Styx to never reveal anything about Perseus Legacy of Poseidon and Child of Sparta to anyone unless allowed to by Perseus."

Thunder rumbled and blue light flashed. Perseus nodded.

"My father is Thanatos god of death,"

Perseus proceeded to fill Chiron in with the details of his life so far. When he was done Chiron looked at him and shook his head. "Your life is filled with much sorrow Perseus."

Perseus chuckled "I know that more than anyone else, you may actually be the only being to know my life story except My dad and Grandpa Erebus."

Chiron looked at Perseus weird. "Grandpa Erebus?"

"Hey, it's what he wanted me to call him. Insisted actually."

"I'm confused though Perseus. Why do you only look like a son of Poseidon."

"Well because when my powers from my dad and grandfather were locked my most dominant inheritance is Poseidon. My eyes are usually a dark violet, not sea green."

They sat there for a while and watched the sunset.

"I'm leaving after the moon sets and before the sun rises." Perseus "would you like to wait with me." Chiron nodded.

They sat in front of a fire chatting about the good times they spent together. When the moon was at its peak in the sky Chiron gave Perseus his birthday present. It was a thin black rope with a clasp at each end and with 2 beads on it. The first was a black wooden bead with a trident skilfully carved into it. The second was a red bead. On it was a shield with the spartan symbol. Perseus thought they were amazing. He put it around his neck and hugged the centaur. "Thank you Chiron," the centaur smiled.

When Perseus stepped back Chiron noticed a 3rd bead that was black and had a skull with wings carved into it. "Perseus," Chiron said pointing, "isn't that your father's symbol."

Perseus nodded smiling softly. "Yeah, it is."

Perseus sat back down and they talked till dawn. Perseus couldn't help but let a tear fall as he hugged the old centaur one last time.

"I will see you again Chiron," Perseus said firmly. "I know I will."

"I hope so, Young Perseus."

Perseus started walking up the mountain until he reached the top. He was standing at the top of the mountain looking out when he heard his dad behind him. He turned around.

"You ready to go son?" his dad asked.

Taking one last look at where he knew Chiron's cave to be down below he turned back to his Thanatos and nodded with a sad smile.

"I'm ready." Thanatos grabbed him in a hug.

"Close your eyes," Thanatos demanded.

Perseus did so. Thanatos spread his giant wings and in a flash, they were gone.
