A/N- I own only the plot. All character rights go to ABC.
Robin awoke in the middle of the night to Alice thrashing beside her. Her wife was mumbling in her sleep, tossing and turning, and sweating profusely. Robin couldn't catch anything she was saying clearly, but she thought she heard her say Cecilia. She was about to shake Alice awake when her wife suddenly sat bolt upright in bed, screaming, "No! Cecilia!"
Robin sat up and wrapped her shaking wife in her arms. Alice was panting heavily, her eyes wild. Robin rubbed Alice's arm soothingly, muttering softly about everything being okay.
Slowly, Alice's breathing returned to normal as she registered that she was safe from whatever she'd been dreaming about.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Robin asked, wondering what had triggered this nightmare. Alice hadn't had one in years.
Alice shook her head.
"Not really," she admitted. "But I will. You have a right to know this story anyway."
"Okay," Robin agreed. "Whatever you're ready for."
"It was more a memory than a dream," Alice explained. "I was back in Wonderland, having a tea party with all my friends. Cecilia was there, and the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Door Mouse. We were singing, I think, as we often did. Then, the Jabberwocky swooped out of the sky and attacked us. He killed the Wonderland creatures first. They were protecting Cecilia and me. He tore through them like butter. Then, he came after Cecilia and me. She stepped in front of me, and I thought she could fight him off. But she couldn't."
Robin felt a shiver run down her spine as Alice spoke those words aloud for the first time since her trip to Wonderland.
"She died to protect me," Alice continued. "And I did manage to slay it. I did. But I was about two minutes too late."
Her voice was filled with sorrow, and Robin felt her heart break for her poor Alice. She hugged her tight, and Alice buried her face in Robin's shoulder. Her shoulders shook as she sobbed. Robin wondered how long she'd been holding that in. She knew that some of the tears were purely hormonal, but some of them were real tears of heartbreak.
Eventually, Alice's tears stopped, and Robin laid down, Alice's head resting on her chest.
"Robin?" she said after a moment. "I don't think I'll be able to sleep."
"Didn't you say you had nightmares as a kid?" Robin asked. Alice nodded. "How did your papa deal with them?"
"It's silly. . ." Alice evaded.
"I'm sure it's not," Robin disagreed. "And besides. You should know that I'd do anything for you. No matter how silly."
"Papa used to sing to me," Alice confessed. "But if you don't want to, I won't make you."
"Nonsense. I'll sing for you," Robin replied. "What do you want me to sing?"
"How about a lullaby?" Alice suggested. "Since it's for the baby too."
"Sure. Does the one from the movie we watched the other night work for you?" Robin asked. When Alice nodded, Robin began to sing softly. "Deep in the meadow, under the willow. A bed of grass, a soft green pillow. Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes. And when they open, the sun will rise. Here, it's safe. Here, it's warm. Here the daisies guard you from every harm. Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true. Here is the place where I love you."
By the time the song was over, Alice was snoring softly, her head still resting on Robin's chest. Robin smiled and fell asleep, content in knowing that her two favorite girls were safe.
A/N- I hope you enjoyed it. Leave a review if you know what movie/book series that lullaby is from. Also leave a review and vote on a name for baby Madarcher. Since Jennifer Baratta made an excellent point about Regina being ticked off if they named the baby Marian, your options are now Tiera Rose and Cecilia Belle. As always, have a blessed day, loves!
