"We have to in there again, we need to find them!" Mel declared as she was ready to march forward. Brenda grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back.
"And do what? We have no idea where they could be and no other plan of getting out again." She tried reasoning with her before sighing, "Look. They still have their walkie. I'm sure once they're able to they will reach out. They might even already be on their own way back. We just need to wait alright?"
Mel didn't want to wait. But she knew it was the right thing to do in the moment. With her own frustrated sigh she took a seat. Brenda nearby as she pulled out her pack of cards to distract herself while Frypan went to check on the kids.
Time moved on and Mel only got more nervous with every minute. It wasn't until they heard the radio on the table spark to life. Thomas' voice coming through.
"Brenda you there?!" Brenda sprang to life and grabbed it as fast as she could.
"Thomas I'm here."
"We're not gonna make it."
Brenda and Mel shared worried glances before taking a step outside to have a bit more privacy, "What are you talking about?"
"Just take the others, get everybody out while you still can."
Mel gave her a look that said 'I'm not going anywhere'. Brenda could only agree as she told him they weren't going to leave them behind.
She was going to say more when the distant sound of a hum could be heard. They looked around a moment before Brenda made a realization and moved further outside to see her thoughts confirmed. A light shined down on them and Brenda smiled watching the Berg descend. Jorge at the controls.
"Thomas don't worry! We're coming to you!" She shouted in the walkie.
Frypan and the kids all gathered around to see what was happening. Brenda told Thomas to look for them near the tunnels before running over to meet Jorge. Mel close behind as the ramp opened up to reveal one other person with him.
"Vince?" Frypan asked to the man. Mel looked the stranger up and down as Jorge mentioned picking up a stray.
All the children started to board. Mel was about to get on herself when she noticed a figure in the distance. She took a step forward and squinting through the darkness she was able to see who it was.
"Hang on guys.. Elise? Elise!" She ran forward to meet the woman and hugged her. Glad to see that she wasn't part of Lawrence's chaos currently happening in the city.
"What are you doing out here?" Mel asked causing Elise to chuckle a moment before turning serious and fixing the bag on her shoulder.
"Once I heard what Lawrence was doing I wanted no part in it. So I packed up all the supplies I could. Even stole a few from what they left behind, and figured I'd find somewhere else. If there even is such a thing." She explained causing Mel to look back at the Berg.
"Come with us." She said leaving no room for denial as she grabbed her hand and dragged her along, explaining that they'd be leaving as well. Elise started to speak up but sighed and figured it was the best chance she had.
They were the last ones on, gave quick introductions as Vince introduced himself as well before Jorge was back at the front and flying them up into the air and back into the city to get Thomas and the others.
He flew them to where Brenda had said they would all meet up and it didn't take long to get there thanks to their new flying machine. The kids all stayed strapped in as they landed, and the moment the ramp started to descend Mel and Brenda were out onto the street to find any signs of them. Looking in every direction.
Jorge was close behind, looking at all the chaos he tried to reason that they couldn't stay here. Brenda just shook her head telling him they'd be here. More so trying to convince herself the most.
"Thomas? Can you hear me?" A loud echo made them freeze, looking around to see where it came from. The voice seemed familiar to them. Teresa?
"I know you have no reason to trust me.." It continued, realizing she was speaking over some type of intercom system. "But I need you to come back. Thomas, you can save Newt. There's still time for him."
Those words made Mel more alert. What did she mean by that? Save Newt, what happened?!
"There's a reason Brenda isn't sick anymore. It's your blood, do you understand? She isn't sick because..you cured her."
Hearing about a cure she reached for the serum in her bag, thoughts going a mile a minute as she held onto it tightly.
"All you have to do is come back and this will all finally be over. Please, just come back to me."
It went silent again. Her voice gone in the wind. They all contemplated Teresa's words a moment, was Thomas really their answer to all of this? Did he truly possess the capability of being a cure for their dead world?
Mel snapped out of it as she heard a name called. She turned to see Gally and another boy, Minho she assumed, running towards them.
"Where's the serum!" He shouted. It only took moments for Mel to connect the hidden dots. Teresa had mentioned saving her brother. The serum was for Newt. He needed help. It was all about him.
Without a second longer to think on it she took off running. Gally, Minho, Frypan and Brenda taking off after her. She wasn't sure where she was going but she didn't care. She had to find him. Had to help him. She felt hurt for not being told what was going on. Who else knew and why didn't he trust her to know as well. She pushed her legs faster, ignoring the calls from Gally.
She took a few turns through all of the fighting and shooting going on, not caring if she got hit. She needed to find them and for a moment she thought she was lost until she finally heard shouting that wasn't right next to her, but not too far off. Her tired legs pulled her forward as she ran towards it. Making one last turn until she finally saw a familiar face. Thomas. She ran forward and then stopped.
He was leaning over someone else before eventually standing up. Looking down and closer she noticed it was Newt. She took a shaky breath noticing that he wasn't moving. Eyes open but unseeing. Thomas looked up at her, tears in his eyes. And it confirmed her darkest fears as she finally noticed the knife sticking out of her brothers chest.
Mel stumbled forward. Her legs giving out on her halfway as she couldn't stop staring at his lifeless body. Not wanting to believe it as she struggled to find her breath.
"N-no...no no no." She whispered, tears spilling out of her eyes as she crawled forward.
She didn't even notice Thomas had left. Or when everyone else finally caught up and saw what had happened.
"Newt..Newt please. Get up." Her voice cutting off and cracking as sobs forced their way out of her, wracking her whole body. She shakily reached her hand out to his, flinching at how cold it was. She then began to shake him.
"Newt please wake up! Please please." She begged, no longer caring to keep it all in. She just needed him to move, to do anything and prove her wrong.
That's when hands wrapped around her and tried to pull her away. She screamed and tried to break free of their grip. "No! No stop!" She cried.
Gally was at a loss of what to do. As they finally reached Mel and saw Newt's body along with the disappearing form of Thomas, no one knew what to think. His heart broke for Mel. She finally had her family back, only to lose them so quickly again. Minho was the first to move and went to kneel beside his best friend. Frypan and Brenda following. Gally was the one who reached for Mel and tried to pull her back gently.
When she screamed and refused he sat down and wrapped her completely in his arms, pressing her against his chest and made gentle shushing sounds like a parent would do to a baby to calm it. Mel only cried harder as her struggles stopped and she just laid there staring at the body. Her brother was gone. Her parents gone. She had no one left.
After what felt like forever, and everyone but Mel had their moment to grieve, they knew they needed to get moving and find Thomas again. They looked at each other and nodded in agreement, not needing words. Then all eyes were on Gally who still held Mel. He nodded and prepared himself for the worst. Shifting his position he continued to keep an arm wrapped around her as he brought them up onto their feet.
"Melinda.." He started softly, cupping her face and moving a strand of hair behind her ears, waiting until she finally tore herself away to look at him through her wet eyes, her face flushed and red.
"We gotta go okay? We need to get back to the Berg." The moment the word 'go' left his lips she was shaking her head no. Refusing.
"W-we can't leave him. Please Gally please I can't." She tried to move away from him but his hold on her was strong and secure.
They were running out of time as the area around them was starting to burn, the fire spreading from where it had originally started. Minho and Frypan were already up and trying to move, Brenda staying nearby with Gally as he struggled to convince Mel.
"Mel please." Brenda whispered sympathizing with her, she glanced to Gally who gave a nod understanding the hidden meaning. He silently apologized before bending down slightly and picked Mel up and hauled her over his shoulder to carry her.
She smacked at him trying to get free. "Gally no! Stop please we cant leave him!"
But it was too late. She watched her brother's form get smaller and smaller as they ran back towards the rest of the group. Leaving him where he lied. Mel sobbed until her eyes ran out of any more tears to shed. The way back felt long and dreadful to them all, and as they got closer and closer to the ship they only hoped it wouldn't be too late for Thomas either. That they could save at least one of them.
Jorge and Vince watched with concern as they came up the ramp and told them to go. Brenda quietly explained to Jorge as he flew them up. Once airborne Gally finally set Mel down into a seat. Elise came over with a look of worry, her gaze moving to Gally for answers. He only shook his head and sat with them, providing any comfort he could. Mel just sat there as Elise fretted over her.
Gally left the two together for a moment as everyone grouped up and the search for Thomas began.
