When Robin got home from her grocery shopping trip, Alice was nowhere to be found.
"Alice?" she called worriedly. "Alice?"
She glanced in every room in the house, but none of them were currently housing her Alice. Finally, on a whim, she opened the door to what was once their spare room. Now, Alice had painted it yellow and was in the process of painting a mural of a tree on the wall. She had been attempting to put the crib together as well- the sight of multiple pieces of wood strewn across the floor told Robin that much.
And there, in the center of it all, was Alice. She was napping peacefully, her head resting on the empty IKEA box. Robin smiled softly and shook Alice's arm gently.
"Alice, love," she whispered. "You'll be more comfortable in the bedroom."
Alice's eyes fluttered open, and she smiled adorably at Robin.
"Hi love," she mumbled. "I was going to surprise you with a completed nursery when you got home, but I got tired. I must have fallen asleep putting the crib together."
"Why don't you go into the bedroom and finish your nap?" Robin suggested. "I'll finish the crib, and you can finish off that mural when you get back."
Alice shook her head.
"I'm fine now," she said. "I just needed a bit of a nap. I'll be alright. Let's put this thing together. Two heads are often better than one."
Robin knew that there was no point in arguing with her wife, so she sat down beside her and picked up the directions.
"Alright," she began. "It says here that we need to attach this piece right here- piece A- to this piece right here- piece B- with this bolt using wrench D."
"Why are there so many wrenches?" Alice asked as she attempted to locate wrench D.
"I'm not sure," Robin admitted. "I don't really see any difference between these wrenches. But it says to use wrench D, so I guess we should probably just do as it says."
"Alright," Alice agreed. "Now, the trick is to figure out which one's wrench D."
They searched for a few minutes before finding the wrench that they determined was in fact wrench D. Everything went smoothly for approximately five minutes before they used the wrong wrench and sent the bolt careening into the wall.
Robin swore.
"Robin!" Alice exclaimed. "Not in front of the baby!"
"Sorry, sorry," Robin apologized, knowing better than to argue with Alice that the baby couldn't hear them. "But look, now there's a nick in your freshly painted wall. And we'll never get that bolt back."
In their stress over wrenches, bolts, and swear words, neither soon-to-be-mother heard the door open downstairs, nor did they hear the person who had let themself into their house come up the stairs.
It was only when they heard Zelena's familiar voice asking, "Do you guys need any help with that?" that they even knew anyone was in the house. Both Robin and Alice jumped when they heard her voice.
"Yes, please," Robin replied gratefully. "IKEA's a b-"
"Uh-uh-uh," Alice intervened, tapping her finger on Robin's nose with each syllable. "You've got to start watching your mouth around our daughter Robin Mills!"
"Sorry!" Robin exclaimed. "But yes, Mom, if you could just magic this crib together, it'd be greatly appreciated."
Zelena waved her hand, and all the furniture was set up in the room. The hole in the wall was repaired as well.
"Thank you, Zelena," Alice said. "D'you think you could magic that rocking chair to that corner by the bookshelf? I want to put the crib beneath the mural of the tree once it's finished."
"You know Alice," Zelena began uneasily, waving her hand to put the rocking chair where Alice had wanted her to. "You're family. If you'd like, you could call me Mum."
Alice's eyes welled up with tears, and Zelena hastened to rectify the situation.
"Of course, it was merely a suggestion," Zelena said hurriedly. "If you're not comfortable with that, or it makes you upset, you can just call me Zelena."
Alice broke down into full out sobs, and Zelena and Robin looked at each other in confused silence.
"Alice, love. What's wrong?" Robin asked, putting her arm around her trembling wife's shoulders.
"I'm just so happy!" Alice wailed. "All I ever wanted was a mum, and now I've got one, and I just don't know what to do!"
"You can start by giving me a hug," Zelena offered, holding out her arms.
Alice fell into her maternal embrace, and both women began to cry. Robin, rolling her eyes good-naturedly, got up to retrieve a box of tissues for the both of them.
