A/N- Hello again! Once again, I don't own Once Upon a Time, ABC does. Enjoy!
Zelena had insisted upon coming to Alice's next appointment. Robin was unable to attend- she had a pre-scheduled lunch date with her half brother that could not be postponed- so Alice gladly accepted Zelena's offer to accompany her.
Robin was a bit skeptical as to whether or not Zelena would be able to comfort Alice properly should a situation happen to arise. Still, she didn't have much of a choice in the matter, so Robin reluctantly agreed to let Zelena take Alice to her appointment.
"Ready to go, Mum?" Alice asked.
Mum. She loved the way that word sounded as it flowed off her tongue. She still wasn't quite used to being able to call anyone Mum, but since that fateful Christmas day, Alice had sworn to herself that she would never call Zelena anything else.
"Ready if you are, darling," Zelena replied, offering Alice her elbow.
Alice looped her arm through Zelena's, and her mother-in-law escorted her to the car.
Alice clutched Zelena's hand, growing increasingly worried as the doctor moved the wand around her slightly rounded abdomen.
Finally, she stopped, and Zelena squeezed Alice's hand reassuringly as she caught sight of the baby on the screen. A steady, pulsing noise filled the room, and Alice looked around in confusion.
"What's that noise?" she inquired.
"That's the heartbeat," Dr. Singer explained. She never grew tired of seeing the looks on new parent's faces the first time they heard the heartbeat.
"And there's your baby," Zelena sniffled slightly and pointed to an ever-growing spot on the screen.
Alice watched and listened, mesmerized, but all Zelena could do was break down and cry happy tears.
When Robin had first come out to her, Zelena had forced herself to give up on the idea of ever having grandchildren. So when Robin and Alice had told her they were expecting, she'd hardly dared to believe it. Now, seeing the baby up on the screen and hearing its heartbeat echo through the room, Zelena finally allowed herself to accept that her granddaughter was, in fact, very real. Because of this, Zelena was unable to stop the tears of joy from streaming down her face.
With a small smile on her face, Dr. Singer wordlessly passed Zelena a box of tissues. She blew her nose loudly, and Alice found herself being the one to have to comfort her mother-in-law.
"Everything looks healthy," Dr. Singer said after a moment. She pressed a button, taking a picture of the baby. "Would you like a copy?"
"Yes, please," Alice replied, rubbing Zelena's back.
"Okay," the doctor smiled. "How many copies?"
"Three, please," Alice instructed. "One for me and Robin, one for Papa, and one for Mum."
Dr. Singer printed the pictures, but she left the ultrasound on the screen for a bit, loving seeing Alice and Zelena's reactions to it.
Suddenly, just as the doctor was about to turn off the machine and clear them to go home, Alice felt and saw the baby move. It turned inside her, and the ultrasound picked up the very first sight of her face. It wasn't quite right, as she hadn't finished developing all her features, but Alice thought she was perfect.
Of course, this beautiful sight had Zelena breaking down in a fresh round of tears, and Alice couldn't stop a few from rolling down her face as well.
Wordlessly, Dr. Singer printed off three more pictures of the baby's face.
Robin sat on the couch, tapping her foot impatiently. Her wife and mother were ten minutes late.
What is taking them so long? Robin wondered worriedly.
Just then, she heard footsteps in the hall. She sprung off the couch and ran to the door, throwing it open and stepping into the hall.
"Robin!" Alice exclaimed, excitedly throwing herself into her wife's arms. "How was lunch? How was Roland?"
"Great," Robin replied. "But I'd rather hear about the appointment. How are you? How's the baby? Is everything alright?"
"Everything's perfect," Alice assured. "She was being pretty active, so the doctor let us watch her for a bit. That's why we're late. Here, come inside, and I'll show you the pictures we got!"
She skipped happily inside, and Robin followed.
"Where's Mom?" she asked suddenly.
"She had to leave," Alice explained. "She told me Chad was expecting her home soon, so she had to go early."
In reality, Zelena had stayed in the car because she was still a blubbering mess and she didn't want her daughter to see her like that. But the less Robin knew about that, the better.
"Here," Alice said, passing Robin the pictures they'd taken.
Robin fawned over the first one, the one of the whole baby, for a bit, but she stopped cold when she saw the second- one of the baby's face.
"Is that. . .?" she asked, hardly daring to believe it.
"Yeah," Alice replied. "That's her. But I'd appreciate it if you'd stop looking at her like that."
"Looking at her like what?" Robin questioned.
"Like she's some kind of freak," Alice answered. "She's your daughter, not an alien."
"Oh, Alice," Robin replied. "I don't think she's a freak. I just can't take my eyes off her. She's so precious! I've just. . . never seen anything quite this amazing. I'm not used to it."
"Well, you're going to have to get used to it," Alice quipped. "'Cause in about five months, you're going to be seeing that little face every day."
Robin gave Alice a light kiss.
"I can hardly wait," she sighed happily.
