A Terrible Mistake

Chapter 4:
The five of them approached the small snow cover building; it was barely 600 square foot with a large bulky looking door on the front of the building. It did look like the door was very sturdy and only slight indents showed that the Lurkers made any effort to get into it. Sheaira shivered on her brother's shoulder as they watched Jak and Daxter examine the door. Jak turned back to John and Sheaira.
"Well?" Daxter folded his arms over his chest expectantly.
"Well what?" John asked shrugging his shoulders.
"You have the key don't you?" Daxter eyes sharpened and John and Sheaira looked at each other.
"Oh yeah…" John frowned and looked back at Jak and Daxter then to Gordy.
"You don't have a key?! We made it all the way up here and you don't even have a way to get in!?" Daxter groaned letting his arms fall to his sides. Jak also looked disappointed.
"Well there is another way in," Gordy pointed out as he walked around the building. The four of them followed him curiously as he stopped behind the building pointing up a ventilation shaft just poking out slightly from the snow.
"Well you want me to throw you up there?" John asked Sheaira and her eyes narrowed.
"There's no way I could fit in there, it's way too tight," Sheaira stated gazing up at the vent, she didn't want to outright say she was afraid of getting stuck.
"Relax baby I got this, I know my way around tight holes," Daxter grinned raising his eyebrows. Jak rolled his eyes and threw Daxter to the vent. Daxter ripped off the vent with some effort and crawled inside.
"What's that even suppose to mean?" Sheaira looked confused as Jak shook his head and headed towards the door.
"You don't want to know," John sighed as Gordy followed him and Sheaira back to the main door. They waited at the door waiting for anything to happen.
"What if he got stuck…." Sheaira stated to worry that their plan wasn't going to work; she rubbed the fur on her left arm watching the door. There was a click and the door slid open to reveal a smug looking orange ottsel with his arms crossed over his chest. Jak smiled at Daxter and Sheaira looked relieved.
"What didn't I tell you, I got magic fingers," Daxter wiggled his fingers towards the smugly. Sheaira jumped off John's shoulder into the warmth of the Storage unit. It was dimly lit with lava tubes flowing through the building. As she looked around she could tell her dad had not been in here for a while with cobwebs covering several boxes of Dynamite. Daxter followed Sheaira and gazed around.
"So Sugar Peach where's the Power cell booty?" he gently nudged her with his elbow. Sheaira sighed and rolled her eyes. She held up her hand and jester to the boxes.
"They got to be somewhere in those, however, there's a lot of Dynamite in these boxes too," she looked back at the boys who were examining the boxes.
"These might be useful…" Gordy eyes seem to light up as he held up some of the Dynamite.
"Don't you dare," John smacked the Dynamite out of his hands, "Get Dad's permission first." Gordy looked very disappointed as Jak wondered to the back of the Storage unit noticing something behind a few boxes. He began to move them while the others seem busy looking for the Power Cells.
"Well we need to start quickly before the Lurker's catch on to our escape," Sheaira hopped on one of the boxes and started searching through them.
"Perhaps we could make use of the Dynamite?" Gordy suggested and John watched him carefully. Sheaira paused a moment in her box and then nodded pulling out the dynamite.
"You got a point there," Sheaira said and Daxter's eyes widen as she pulled out some dynamite, "Let's set this up around the door. We'll trap them!"
"Why does Dad have so much dynamite?" John pondered rubbing his goatee; he pulled out more dynamite from one of the boxes.
"Uh…Plot convenience?" Sheaira shrugged.
"Are we really going to blow this place sky high?" John frowned as he watched his sister start setting up a fuse and placing the Dynamite around the door.
"We can't let these Lurkers keep rummaging around Snowy Mountain, will flush 'em out!" Sheaira said as she looked over at Daxter who was digging through a few boxes under the shelves.
"Yeah plus they are going to realize that their Prisoners are escaped," Daxter said looking back over at Sheaira, "Wonder how they are going to use those pea brains to figure out where we are."
SLAM
A loud sound came from the back of the storage room gathering the attention of the other four. Jak looked proud and crossed his arms motioning down at the box filled with several Power Cells. Daxter jumped up and rushed over to Jak looking into the box, "Alright ya did it Jak!" Daxter cheered sliding across the floor and doing a victory dance as Jak grabbed one of the orbs holding it up victoriously and placing it into his back. The two boys paused a moment and looked at the other three who were staring in awe.
"You aren't going to do that for all of them are you," Sheaira teased lightly with a smirk on her face. Daxter's ears fell and Jak scratched he head sheepishly.
"You also found the warp gate," John moved past Jak and Daxter to the wall and began fiddling with the controls turning it on. Jak scooped up the remaining Power cells and put them into his bag.
"Alright perfect we've just got to finish setting up the trap and –" before Sheaira could finish her sentence there was a loud bang at the door. Everyone froze for a moment and another loud bang occurred a few moments later. Sheaira realized that they were out of time and she gather up all the leads to the dynamite that was around the door connecting it to a switch, "Okay looks like we're out of time, hurry go through the gate!"
"I'm not leaving you behind," John stated stubbornly not wanting to let something bad to happen to her as Gordy jumped through the warp gate first.
"Don't be an idiot, I need to activate the dynamite, I'll follow you right after go!" Sheaira shouted at John. John sighed in defeat and jumped through the warp gate. Daxter jumped up on Jak's shoulder as the door busted down and the Lurkers came in.
"Found you," hissed a voice from behind the Lurkers, "This time you will not esssscape." The voice hissed.
"Ha, that's what you think. Jak, NOW!" Sheaira hopped onto his shoulder and she pushed the button on the trigger that activated the dynamite with a loud boom. Luckily enough Jak managed to get through the gate and the three of them hit the floor hard inside the Red Sages lab. There was talking around the three of them but they couldn't make it out as their ears were ringing. Jak rubbed his head and looked up to see Daxter looking dazed and half way across the room. Sheaira was on the other side of them room shaking herself.
"Jak are you alright," a voice came through clear as he felt a soft hand touch his shoulder; he turned to Keira who was kneeling down checking on him. He smiled at her and nodded.
"What did you do!?" Samos' voice came loudly as he approached Sheaira who shook her head. She narrows her eyes at him.
"We were so worried when we lost contact with you," Keira said looking over at Sheaira who was still a little dazed, she gazed over at Daxter who was laying on his back stunned. Then she turned to the warp gate, it had been completely destroyed.
"Well I saved us the trouble of getting rid of the Lurkers on Snowy Mountain…" she began and turned back to an unimpressed looking Samos.
"You also destroyed our only means of transport!" Samos said in annoyance. He was obviously not impressed by the actions of the Red Sages Daughter. Sheaira turned to the warp gate and gasped realizing the damage she had cause as her ears fell flat. Daxter also got up and looked over at the gate and then back to Jak.
"WE COULD HAVE DIED!" Daxter's voice squeaked.
"I see that…" a voice came from the door opening. Sheaira turned to look at a smaller old woman with pure white hair. She gently pushed her glasses up her nose as she approached the two ottsels to examine them closer. She looked Sheaira up and down first and then approached the shivering orange ottsel she grabbed his tail and it knocked him over abruptly as he was not prepared.
"Whoa lady, at least take me out to dinner first before getting frisky!" he protested.
"So these are the two who were transformed from humans hmm?" the woman released Daxter's tail and turned back to Jak, Keira and John.
"Yeah my sister was attacked and then fell into the Dark eco," John said and Jak nodded in agreement.
"A similar thing happened to that rodent as well," Samos motioned over to Daxter.
"Who are you?" Sheaira raised an eyebrow at the woman gazing her up and down and looking at the staff she had in her left hand. It had Precursor writing on it that she couldn't quiet decipher from just a gaze. The older woman pushed a stray white hair back into her bun before looking back at the red ottsel.
"My name is Julayla, I am the Light Eco Sage. I have been studying ancient Precursor ruins for decades," she smiles warmly her icy blue eyes gazed down and Sheaira. Daxter got up and quickly moved to Sheaira's side.
"Light eco huh? Sounds like our ticket to turning back, what are you waiting for lady!" Daxter said.
"I've never seen a case like yours before," she shook her head; "Besides Light Eco is not something that is easily come by."
Both Sheaira and Daxter looked at each other and lowered their ears.
"I contacted Julayla to see if she knew anything about you're transformation," Samos said as he looked down at the two ottsels.
"I've seen other transformation with Dark Eco but nothing like this," Julayla shook her head and turned to the others, "I'd like to check my research though, however, it looks like we aren't going anywhere and that zoomer is no way nearly roomy enough to carry us all…"
Jak seemed curious about what she meant by other transformation but turned to Keira and John. John thought for a moment before perking up.
"Our Mum had a zoomer too, we keep it down in the basement," he exclaimed excitedly, "Come on Jak help me bring it up I'm sure Keira can put it together so we can travel with the Light Eco Sage."
Jak nodded and Jak followed John down to the basement.
"Really that old thing…" Sheaira frown as Daxter looked at her.
"You'd be surprised on how Keira can use her hands," he said raising his eyebrows nudging her. Keira crossed her arms and glares at Daxter. With a whack of Samos' staff Daxter fell forward and then began rubbing his head painfully as he sat up glaring at the Green Sage, "It was a compliment!"
"Careful there you might knock out the remaining brain cells he has left," Sheaira said with a grin on her face looking down at Daxter who quickly got to his feet. She stuck out her tongue playfully and the Light Eco Sage snickered slightly.
"Alright got it," John called pulling up the larger zoomer. Jak was carrying the other end using the red Eco to lift it rather easily. As they pulled the older zoomer in Keira looked it over.
"Can you fix it?" John asked her.
"It's very different from mine, but it's got the same components…" Keira leaned over the older zoomer looking at all the parts, it was clear that it didn't run with the propellers that she uses for her zoomer. Daxter jumped up on the seats almost causing Jak to lose his grip on holding it up. Jak glared sharply at Daxter who ignored him.
"Well babe, can you put it together?" he asked her grinning.
"Please, that old junk, unlikely," Sheaira rolled her eyes.
"Actually, it shouldn't be too much trouble, however, I'm going to need more Power Cells to do so," Keira said looking back down at Sheaira who seemed taken a back. Daxter groaned.
"But we just got a bunch," Daxter whined and lowered his ears in disappointment. Keira rolled her eyes glaring at the orange ottsel.
"You want to turn back right?" Keira said.
"I know I do, look I know where more should be. We'll check the Spider Cave and Gordy may have some more laying around, after all he owes us," Sheaira said confidently as she was about the walk over to Jak Samos stopped her with his staff.
"Oh no, you are not going with the boys," Samos growled at the Red ottsel who turned to him. Her eyes sharpened.
"Why not!?"
"You already cause enough trouble, the least you can do is help clean up your father's lab and help Keira and John fix up the zoomer," Samos said. It was clear he was a stricter father figure than Sheaira's father. Sheaira lowered her ears in defeat as Daxter jumped up onto Jak's shoulder.
"Don't worry baby, your hero Daxter with get those Power cells, with a lil' help from this big guy," He patted Jak on the head who rolled his eyes at his best friend.
"Wow…my Hero," Sheaira said sarcastically and crossed her arms, she turns back to the mess and sighs, she'd rather be out on the field.
"Just be careful out there," Keira called from the hood as her head was already inside the zoomer. John was bringing her a tool kit and placing it nearby. Jak nodded and smiled towards Keira as he headed out with Daxter. Sheaira sighed and began collecting the debris from the warp gate as Samos and Julayla began to talk about the history of Light Eco. She was really hoping the boys would come back soon with the rest of the Power Cells.
Author's Note: Julayla is a character who was created by an old friend of my who went by the name Phoe-chan. They also use to write fanfictions a long time ago and I wanted to keep her character alive in the reboot fanfiction.
