Hi ! I have lost all motivation to write recently and seem to be incapable of piecing together a whole oneshot without getting distracted, so you have Bethany to thank for hyping me up while writing this.
If theres any of my fics that you'd like an update of let me know in the reviews and i will try my best to get it written and uploaded.
Im sorry this isn't the most detailed piece of fanfic and it certainly isn't my best work but hoepfully this will spark some more motivation.
This is a Sam fic based around series 32 episode 41- it is part of my Sam alternative universe where instead of being killed off she got her happily ever after.
Hope you enjoy !
Exhaustion was something Sam had grown used to dealing with in recent weeks, as her figure expanded, her energy levels shrunk. One shift felt like a week of sleepless nights, with the addition of the task of introducing the new paramedic Ruby today was sure to test her already thin patience.
This pregnancy had tested every last fibre of her endurance and resilience. It hadn't been the easiest of pregnancies, at only 27 weeks she was suffering horrific back and hip pain.
Earlier in the pregnancy she had endured terrible morning sickness , which left her practically bed bound for the majority of the first trimester. Eventually, she began to feel the sweet release from the clutches of her churning stomach but the relief was temporary as it was soon replaced with mind-numbingly painful migraines. The combination of these two equally dreadful symptoms had caused Sam to be signed off sick for the first four months of her pregnancy.
Upon her return to work, Dylan had urged her to go part time for the good of herself and their growing baby; who was measuring a week behind their actual gestational age. However, Sams' stubborn streak was as present as ever and she insisted on working full time until the first contraction.
By 10am Sams' tolerance had been tested multiple times; a hoax call had left her seething and having to explain everything she was doing to Ruby was mentally tiring. It wasn't Ruby's fault, she couldn't help being new, Sam just despised teaching. If she had wanted to teach she would have become a teacher!
Alast her day began to look alot more pleasurable when they were called to one of her favourite patients , Daisy. There was something about a ninety-five year old war hero that she admired and she quite enjoyed being educated on the experience of a woman's role in the war. Not to mention it was an opportunity for her to rest her aching limbs as she wasn't having to rush around treating a patient. Daisy was a frequent caller, so both Sam and Iain knew what they were walking into.
"Paramedics!" Ruby called through the small, terrace house, she had insisted on bringing all the equipment in with her despite the two more advanced paramedics advice. The sound of classical music filled the room, like an inviting aroma.
"In here!" Daisy replied chirpily as she searched through an old photo album.
It came as a shock to Ruby that the elderly woman standing in front of her was in fact not experiencing chest pains, the concept that a woman of such an age was not in a residential nursing home was alien to the junior paramedic.
Sam eventually made her way into the living room, everything took a bit longer these days as her walk had adapted to a waddle to accommodate her growing baby bump. The waddle was something she found rather embarrassing but at this point in pregnancy was unavoidable.
"Oh my goodness! You've grown," Daisy exclaimed as Sam entered the room.
"Oh yes and I'm definitely feeling it," Sam smiled warmly as she smoothed her hands over her swollen abdomen.
" Ay no fair. When I told you that you had grown earlier, you nearly bit my head off,"Iain joked.
" That's because you put the words jesus christ before it," Sam defended as she rolled her eyes.
After doing a quick wellbeing check, Sam found herself engrossed in war stories, with each word she became more and more interested. Every word was filled with memories, passion and comradeship.
"Enough about the past. What is it like to be in the army these days?" Daisy questioned, shuffling the pile of black and white photographs in her grip.
"Well we do a lot more humanitarian work and the medical care we can give in the field is a lot more advanced. Although performing a tracheotomy under gun fire, in a minefield will never be a walk in the park," Sam grinned, reminiscing on her time in the armed forces.
"I don't imagine so. Will you be deployed again?" Daisy asked, her interest in the modern day military encompassing her.
"I was going to. About six months ago I was due to be flown out but something more important came up," Sam smiled softly as she cradled her belly in the crease of her arm lovingly.
"Indeed so. Little ones arm the biggest blessing," Daisy smiled, as she handed a photograph from 1942 to Iain.
Sam smiled,"I'm gonna make sure Aaron knows just how crucial women like you were to the war effort."
The name slip was completely unintentional, she had promised Dylan they'd keep it a secret until the moment their boy made his grand entrance. Nonetheless, Sam's promise to ensure her son knew just how important the female role in the war effort and society was. She would raise a respectful and polite son, who knew that all genders were equal and respected everybody for who they were.
After a long day, Sam found herself bundled up in one of Dylan's hoodies, sitting outside nursing a steaming hot chocolate (her preferred drink during pregnancy as the stench of coffee was too much for her heightened sense of smell). The garden swing lulled back and forth as she gazed across the water, the reflection of the moon dancing atop the surface. With every passing moment her body got closer to succumbing to her exhaustion but she knew these were the moments she would remember in her old age. When she was 95 and her kids were all grown up- her outstanding career would always be something she took great pride in but these small pockets of peace as she felt every single movement of her unborn son, would be something she treasured till the end of time.
Albeit the exhaustion, aching hips and mood swings, Sam could not have been happier as she sat and daydreamed about life once her son was earthside.
