(GREETINGS AND SALUTATIONS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,AND THIS IS THE AGENT OF LITERATURE SIGNING ON.)
Seeing that Halloween is less than 11 days away,I found it only fitting to review some Halloween classics,or more accurate, classic universal monster movies.
That's right, for the rest of October I'm gonna review some universal classic monster movies,as well as some remakes, and what better film to start off with then the movie that pretty much started it all?
DRACULA(1931)
*What did I like?
-The silence of the film:The film has absolutely no music throughout the entire run, which I actually liked,it added a little atmosphere to the film.
-While I haven't seen a lot of movies that features with Dracula in it,but I can definitely say that Bela lugosi sets the standard of how to do Dracula.
The thing I like most about this Dracula,is that he doesn't make up some story about himself, whenever he meets someone he says,"My name's Count Dracula, and I'm from Transylvania.",He doesn't pretend to be someone else.
And I like the way he talks too,I know a lot of actors try to recapture the voice of Lugosi, but they all come across as goofy and dumb, which I guess is the point, but it just fits with him.
My favorite parts with him,is when he's in the shadows and the lights shining on his eyes,it just adds a bit of menace to the character.
-I also like Edward van sloan as Van helsing, the fact that he already knows about vampires might be a bit odd at first, but when you hear him explain it,it makes him sound like he's been doing this all his life, and I kind of like it.
*What am I mixed about?
-I will say that the only thing about Dracula(the character not the movie),is his costume,I know that it's iconic, but I felt that it took away from the menace of Dracula,it's a small nitpick, but I just prefer the parts where he's completely covered in black.
-Now as for the movie,I will say that the ending is abrupt, like there's no afterthought,no epilogue,it just ends.
-A couple of the supporting cast is also ok,like the actor who played Renfield was pretty alright,if that laugh is anything to go by,but that's about it.
Now...
*What did I not like?
-The characters of Harker and Mina,Harker wasn't very well developed, and I didn't understand why Dracula was suddenly obsessed with Mina, the man encountered three other women, heck,he even bit two of them, but it's mina he suddenly wants to turn into a bride, and on a side note, what happened to the brides, they were there in the first ten minutes of the film, then suddenly Dracula goes to London, now suddenly he's alone, did he divorce them, did he kill them, what?
*In conclusion.
While I'm sure the problems I had with the movie are explained in the book, and I do understand that due to the time period,I'm sure there were constraints that prevented universal from making the movie a little longer, but did any of this take away the movies entertainment,no.
And for that,I'm giving Dracula(1931) a 4/5.
Until next time..
