Freida and Agnar had reached the other side of the wall, and there they could see that the streets were much more cleaner and the buildings pick. The two of them kept on making their way through the street, and Agnar claimed onto Freida tightly.
Everyone they walked past even dirty looks as if they were cockroaches.
"Move it, you vermin!" said a man hitting Freida with his suitcase.
"You can't get away from these devil bloods," said his friend.
"Damn, Vikians are crawling around as they please," said the man as they walked past.
"Freida…" said Agnar looking at her terrified.
"It's all right, Agnar," said Freida gently. "We've heard worse before. Look there, it should be just past that hill."
They made their way towards the hill, and their eyes fell upon a large plain and sitting there was the airship they saw earlier.
"It's so big," said Agnar looking at it with wonder.
"Our U.K.'s here looking at the airship too?" said a voice.
They looked down and saw two soldiers sitting against the hill; one was a tall young man with black hair, and the other was a rather plump older man with a black called moustache.
"I-yes, sir," said Freida backing away from them.
"You're from the Liberian Interment Zone?" he said, getting to his feet. "Let's see your exit permits."
"Uh, our permits," said Freida fishing around in her pockets, but of course, they didn't have them. "We don't have one."
"If you entered the city without permission, then you need to be punished."
"Yes, sir," Freida nodded.
He then bent down to look at them in the eye. "Hard labour or a quick beating."
"A beating, please," said Freida.
"Sister…" Agnar panicked.
"Ah, because you don't want to cover your parents, right?" the guard assumed.
"That's right," Freida nodded. "My brother didn't want to come, but I dragged him with me. Please allow me to take her punishment too."
"Very well," he said and then kneed him in the chest hard.
"Freida!" Agnar cried.
"Here's another," said the guard hitting him.
"Shesh, go easy on him, Ragnar," said the man with a moustache and then approached Agnar. "Come on, lad, let's take you back home."
Ragnar finally stopped beating Freida and stopped to take a smoke. "It was wise of you to keep your armbands on. Kids are not Vikians get a one-way trip to Paradise."
"Sorry, I'll go back home now," said Freida.
"Wait, you came to see the airship, right? You may were doing while you can."
Freida then looked at the airship with the guard, thinking it would be the final time she would see one.
'The next day, my brother was found on the banks of the river.'
The guard who had been escorting Agnar began to share his accounts with her parents.
"I showed the boy the gates to the Liberian, and then I went on my way," he said. "I was busy at work, you see, and Vikian children shouldn't be roaming around the city without permits in the first place. I find it disturbing that your daughter does not know what it means to be of his bloodline. I mean, you have been teaching her so that she can feel the weight of your ancestors sins, now haven't you?"
Freida continued listening to his drivel, though she suspected that he had something to do with her brother's death.
'I couldn't prove it, but I knew that man from Marley Public Security was lying through his teeth. We had stumbled upon him while he was slacking off on the riverbank. How busy could he have been? Mother was signed in her grief, but father…'
"Please allow me to thank you for your guidance, sir," said her father. "I assure you I'll heed and teach my foolish daughter to know better."
'…he demeaned himself to this man. I began to hate that Marleyan and my father. So much that it made my head spin, but more than that, I cursed my own foolishness.'
After the man left, her father began teaching her the history of their world, though she found it completely one-sided.
"1,820 years ago, our ancestor Ymir Fritz made a contract with the devil all earth," he said, showing her the history book. "And obtained the power of the Titans. Upon her death, Ymir spirit was split into nine Titans. These Titans defeated the great nation of Marley and conquered the continent for themselves under the name of the Vikian Empire, thus did this land dark ages began. The subject of Ymir deemed all the other races inferior to their own and violently oppressed them. They stole wealth and land, forced people to bear their children and wiped out some bloodlines entirely.
This ethnic cleansing continued for around 1,700 years, but the fallen nation of Marley planned to use Vikian's arrogance to bring it down from within, and it worked. Marley wrote seven of the nine Titans under its control and used them to win the Great Titan War just 80 years ago. The Vikian king of the time directed three Walls on the Island of Paradise, and he fled there along with a great many of his people. Our ancestors were abandoned and left behind on the mainland, but despite our history, the gracious people of Marley let us live on their land."
'My father was talkative for someone who just lost his son. As he stood there shaming his forbearers and idolising his oppressors just like a whipped dog.'
He finally stopped rambling, but Freida just sat there.
"That officer was telling lies," she said, and her parents stared at her. "The truth was inconvenient for him, so he told lies instead."
"Quiet, the walls of this house are paper-thin," her father hissed.
"You know what he probably took Agnar and—"
"Silence!" her father snapped. "I told you our ancestors were heinous sinners, understand? They committed genocide against all other races."
"Agnar didn't do anything like that!" Freida yelled at the top of her voice. "We were just walking outside!"
"Why do you doing this? What's wrong with you? Why are you so eager to get us all shipped away?"
Freida just couldn't believe what she was hearing as she stared at her parents.
"We ourselves did nothing," her father admitted. "But to those who have been victimised for generations, you and I are devils nonetheless. We should count ourselves lucky that they let us live quiet, lives here in the Interment Zone. I beg you, Freida, please don't force the rest of this family to meet the same fate as Agnar."
'I still wonder which was truly in the wrong. The world that I lived in or me.'
"Okay, I understand."
'Perhaps it was both. I was ignorant, foolish, the world was twisted and maddening unfair.'
Many years passed now Freida was working in her father's clinic.
'I discovered my own path in life when I was 18 years old; it was round the time I was taking over my father's clinic.'
Freida had just done a checkup on an unnoticed as he took off his shirt that there was a scar on his right shoulder.
"What's that scar on your shoulder?" Freida asked.
"This is what marked me as a patriot," he said.
"They patriot?" Freida blinked, confused.
"Your brother was killed by a Marleyan Public Safety Security officer," he said, much to her shock. "That's a fight fact from our informant in the government. There are some things that you need to hear."
The man then took him to his secret hideout, where there were other members of his resistance. There she was informed of the fate of his brother, and according to them, he had been ravaged by dogs and was left bleeding on the glass.
"It can't be," she cried. "How could they do that?"
'When I learned the truth of my brother's death, I swore to myself that I would show these Marleyans who the real devils were. I sought my ancestors' so-called sins to be justified, but to set the world right as it had been, Vikia would have to be restored. Our informant within the Marleyan government was called the Dragon. He led the restorations without ever showing himself.'
Freida had joined the resistance by marking herself in a similar fashion as all the others by cutting her skin with a knife. She then began working tirelessly, looking through all the records to discover the truth of their ancestors.
"Come, I discover the truth," she said, gesturing everyone together around. "Our ancestor Ymir awakened the power of the Titans and used it to tame the wilderness, carve out roads, and make bridges to span the mountains. She didn't want oppressive people; she helped them prosper."
"So the history we were taught as children was just a hoax. Marleyan propaganda!"
"Impressive, Freida. How did you read this ancient language?"
"Oh no, I haven't deciphered much of the writing at all yet," she said.
"Then how do you know that all of this is true?"
"Because it's obvious just by looking and because I believe in our founder Ymir with all of my heart! We are not devil bloods; we are the gods' children!"
Everyone then immediately cheered.
"My comrades!" said a man as he entered the bunker. "The Dragon has sent us a new ally."
"Hello," said a handsome man with blond hair as he entered the room. "It is good to meet you. I am he has a descendant of the Royal family, the last on this continent Zek Fritz."
The moment the two of them locked eyes, it was love at first sight.
'When we locked eyes, I decided to allow fate to steer my life where it would. Zek was all that remained of the branch of the Royal family that refused to leave the continent. He told secrets about the Titans that only royalty knew before. We believe that he showed us the path to victory.'
"I'm sure of it," said Freida. "The King brought the Founding Titan's into the Walls; if we take back that power, then we can control all other Titans and crush Marley once and for all!"
"But wait, if the King was able to wield such an absolute power, then why did he run away in the first place?"
"That simple," said Zek. "It's because he refused to fight. In the midst of the Great Titan War, the 145th king forsook his duty to restore order onto the continent and moved his capital to a distant island. All of our pain, all of these years of anguish, it can all be traced to the moment that King renounced conflict."
"Let's fight again," said Freida. "The true Royal family stayed right here on the continent and held their ground for Vikia. It's time that we brought the Founding Titan back to them! Against its power, Marley will crumble! We will restore Vikia and live proudly once more!"
Everyone then immediately rose to their feet and cheered.
Freida's eyes then turned to Zek, who smiled and nodded.
'The next year, the two of us married and were blessed with a daughter. Her name was Zara.'
Freida had just given birth to a healthy young girl and was holding her in arms.
"Our royal child, Zara," Freida smiled. "There's no doubt in my heart that someday she will lead her people to victory."
'Years passed by, and people change, as the world around us rapidly advanced a turning point came for the Restorationist.'
An army official had made his way into the Interment Zone with an important announcement. The announcement was a follow: they would allow Vikian children to join a special branch of the military called Warriors. These children would be given the powers of the Titans they possessed, and anyone children successful inheriting these powers, both them and their family would be recognised as honorary Marleyans with full rights and privileges.
'The Marleyan Government required subjects of Ymir to become Marleyan Warriors, capable of serving the vessels for the Nine Titans.'
The Restorationists quickly gathered to discuss the surprise move by Marley, and they had been given a clear explanation by the Dragon.
"We received a new message from the Dragon," said Freida. "He says the reason that Marley is making these moves is to prepare for an anticipated struggle over resources as military technology keeps advancing. Marley currently leads the world using the power of its seven Titans, but they soon may grow obsolete. An enormous cachet of fossil fuel lies beneath Paradise.
Marley can't afford to leave it left unused, but 80 years ago, the King of the walls left behind this warning. 'If you ever interfere with our affairs, the millions upon millions of Titans sleeping within the Walls will flatten the entire world.' As long as he can make this threat, none dare to confront, at least not directly. So the Marleyan Government has the same objective as we do; they will try to infiltrate Paradise and then sees the Founding Titan for themselves."
Once he was finished, everyone just sat there in silence.
"What do we do? With things as they are…"
"Yeah, Marley will get it before us."
"If they actually do it, we will lose any chance we had of bringing Vikia back."
"It's bad, but we still have a power forward," said Freida. "Send my daughter Zara to become a Marleyan Warrior."
It was then that they brought Zara into the inner circle and began telling her everything they knew.
"You see, Zara," said Freida. "Almost everything you have been taught by the Marleyans was wrong, but you have to obey their every order, and you have to do it better and faster than anyone else around you."
"All of us here are counting upon you to save Vikia from disgrace," said Zek.
"Okay, I understand," she said.
'But I should have known, better than anyone, what a wretched sin it is to impose your beliefs on your children. I saw her as a child of royal blood, as Vikia's greatest hope, but did I ever see her as Zara? As the girl she was? At any rate, Zara chose to protect herself as well as her grandparents by turning in both of her naive bullish parents to Marley Public Security.'
Freida and Zek were both quickly apprehended by Marley Public Security after being betrayed by their daughter.
Freida felt someone removing her blindfold and laid eyes upon a vast sandy plain.
"Here we are," said a voice behind her.
"So this is Paradise?" said Freida.
She was currently kneeling upon a wall with her hands tied behind her back. The rest of the Restorationists were gathered as well.
"That's right," said the soldier behind her. "This is Marley's penal colony for you, Vikia called Paradise. He will serve a life sentence for treason on this island once you become a pure Titan."
Freida remembered the painful memories of being tortured; they hadn't just peeled off her fingernails; they had cut off her fingers. He also recognised the soldier being there as well as his house when he was a child.
"I met you once before when I was just a child," he said.
"You still remember that?" said Ragnar.
"Yeah, I would never forget, not after what you two did."
"Please, just kill me now, I can't—" said a Restorationist as he was being dragged along.
"Shut up and keep talking," said the soldier.
"Please don't make me a monster!"
Freida recognised the voice. "Wait, Garg?"
"Shit, how the hell did this happen, Freida!" he yelled furiously. "Why in the world would Zara decide to betray us? Isn't she your daughter? Interesting everything to you was the stupidest I ever did! It's all over now! We're finished because of you! Say something!"
"I'm so sorry," she said.
Garg burst into tears. "Why did we put all of our hopes behind a naive fool like you?"
"Looks like we got a lively one," said the sergeant-major. "You're free to go."
A split second later, he then kicked Garg over the side of the wall and into the sand.
"Garg, no!" Freida yelled as he rolled across the dunes. "Garg, hang in there!"
"Straight north, if you're fast enough, there's a chance you'll make it to the Wall!" the Sergeant Major yelled.
"But Sergeant Major Gravel?" a soldier frowned.
Gravel looked at him. "Hmm, this must have been your first time out here. We do this to be sure that the Titans we make leave the area. They'll chase him for a good while, but they always catch them in the end. Ragnar knows, right?"
"Yeah," said Ragnar as Garg ran for his life.
Freida just looked at and disgusted and recognised Gravel. 'It's him, there's no doubt. That's the bastard that killed my brother.'
Gravel then clapped his hands together. "Well, we've got a whole bunch to turn this time. So, let's get a move on."
Freida then watched in horror as all the soldiers raised their syringes.
"You can't," she said.
She then watched as the soldiers injected them and then promptly kicked them over the edge of the wall. The moment they hit the ground and began to transform into Titans.
"No!" Freida cried and began turning their eyes towards Garg. "No, don't do this! Guys, please, you can't! Don't you remember him?"
Her cries on deaf ears of the Titans chased down Garg.
"Will you stop for my ears to start bleeding," said Gravel.
"I would like to interrogate this one a bit further; you can continue without me," said Ragnar.
"Do as you will," said Gravel and then turned his eyes to a new victim.
Freida followed his gaze, and to her horror, she found being dragged towards the edge of the wall was her husband.
"Zek?" he stared.
"My darling," he said.
"Why do they bring you here? I told them every last thing that was to know!" she said frantically. "This man is a royal—"
Ragnar then suddenly placed his hand over her mouth. "Shut your mouth!"
She struggled to free herself but realised the timing was too perfect. 'Don't tell me, is he trying to cover this up?'
"Good grief," said Gravel shaking his head. "He would have shut up ages ago if you just turned him."
"Freida," said Zek as a soldier bent down towards with a syringe and then injected her. "I promise, no matter what form I might take. I swear I will come to find you."
"Well, isn't that romantic," Gravel chuckled as he approached her and then kicked over the edge. "I'm sure you make a great Titan couple."
"No! Zek!" Freida cried.
She then transformed right in front of her eyes into the same Titan that aided Astrid's mother.
Ragnar's eyes then shot wide open, and he screamed, waking everyone suddenly. He looked around, and his confusion found himself in a prison cell once again.
"What was that?" he said, confused. "Who am I and where—"
Hiccup then approached the bars of his cell. Apparently, he had been sleeping between both his Astrid's cells.
"Just calm down," he said gently. "You're still in the stockades, you and Astrid, because of your insubordination."
"Was all that screaming about?" Astrid asked. "Were you having a nightmare?"
"I guess I was," said Ragnar.
"When you woke, you asked who you were," said Hiccup.
"It's true. Also, it looks like you're crying," Astrid noted.
"I feel strange," said Ragnar as he sat down. "Like I woke up the longest dream of my life. Hold on, it was no dream. It was real; just now, I was somehow reliving my mother's memories. That Titan… poor Zek."
Freida was in tears as she looked down at the Titan that had once been her husband, and he began making his way north.
Gravel laughed. "Look at that; your man has forgotten all about you."
"Shut up!" Freida spat.
Gravel stopped and looked at her. "Did you say something?"
"It was you!" Freida glared. "15 years ago, you ate my eight-year-old brother to your dogs! It was you!"
Gravel remained silent and then turned his eyes to the last prisoner they were bringing. "I'll take this one off your hands. You can just head back to the ship."
"Uh, understood," said the soldier.
Then all the soldiers left the wall making their way back down to the ship.
"What was that about?"
"The Sergeant Major is putting some time towards his hobby. It's best to leave it at that, rookie."
The only ones on the wall now were Gravel, Ragnar, the prisoner and Freida herself.
Gravel stood there lighting his cigarette. "Ragnar, if you finish your interrogation. I would like to see this one dance."
"Wait? What?" Freida stared.
"I remember you too, lass," said Gravel looking at her. "So I'm going to let you go out in a special way. We'll turn this guy into a 3 to 4 m Titan, then the two of you can fight."
"But why? Why does something like that? Do you get some sick pleasure out of watching people get eaten alive?"
"I wouldn't call it pleasure; I just find it interesting," he said, much to her shock. "Does that sound a bit crazy to you? Well, the fact is most people want to see cruelty. Don't get me wrong, I think that peace is a wonderful thing, but something about it just feels lacking. We've pushed death out of sight and mind. That is no way to live; death is always near in nature, and some people might think me abnormal for investigating such things, but to them, I say that I faced this cruel world head-on, and because I bother to deepen my understanding of death, I can accept it when my time comes."
He then injected the prisoner with the syringe. "You see it about education, my boys learned from watching their dogs eat your brother."
He then kicked the prisoner over the edge of the wall.
"Do you not feel any remorse?" Freida asked.
"Well, I guess I get what you mean. If something that horrible happened to one of my children, my heart would break, no question."
The prisoner then transformed into a Titan.
"You poor devils, it's a shame that you had to be born Vikian," he said, smoking. He then pointed down at the Titan below them. "Luck, that is your people true form. All it takes is some Titan spinal fluid, and anyone of you will turn into a man-eating monster. The whole of humanity would feel safer if you Vikians would just disappear. We wish we could eradicate you from this world!"
"You what?" Freida stared.
"I have no trouble sleeping at night because I'm not really killing humans," said Gravel tossing his cigarette away and approaching Freida. "If you had restored Vikian, you would be butchering us Marleyans right now. Where's your remorse, you murderous devil?"
"You're lying," said Freida. "You've always lied, but I know the truth. Our founder Ymir helped this continent to prosper. She—"
"Yeah, I heard it before," he said and then attempted to push you over the edge of the wall. "Says since your history so wonderful, why don't you show your friend down there?"
"You can't do this to me!" Freida yelled, struggling. "I'm a human being!"
"Ooh, here that?" Gravel smiled. "Your brother is calling for you."
Then suddenly, Ragnar pulled Freida back and shoved Gravel over the edge. Freida wasn't certain who was more surprised her or Gravel. Regardless, Gravel hit the dunes and landed right next to the Titan he just created.
Gravel just stared at the Titan in horror as it grabbed him and Freida heard his screams as it began to eat him.
"So it is interesting as he said it was?" Ragnar asked, removing his cap.
Freida looked at him, confused. "Wait, why did you do that?"
"Because I'm the Dragon, Freida," he said, tossing his cap away and then drew a knife. "Watch closely, and don't forget, this is how we of the Nine use our powers."
He then cut his wrist and, a split second later, transformed into a Titan. Freida then watched as he began attacking the Marleyans and destroying their ship.
