Continued on from the last chapter.. Does Mira have a past that will catch up with her? Who is Rhino and Harriette's son to her?
"You okay?" Wayne asked as Rhino climbed on board the plane and laid on the stretcher. He knew the routine, he has been through it hundreds of times before and will probably happen a few more times yet.
"Yep, I'll be up the front," Mira said, sitting in her seat and putting her headset back on as she picked up her iPad and pulled up her notes for that flight.
"Isn't their son with the charges of domestic abuse against his ex girlfriend?" Matty asked Wayne quietly as he grabbed the cardiac monitor and the stickers for an ECG.
"Yep, they never released her name but details match Mira's description though. Don't ask her Matty. Right Rhino, we are going to attach these to your chest and get an ECG to see what is going on with that heart of yours. But you know the drill," Wayne said as they attached the monitor to his chest and gave a smile to Rhino.
"We have a blood pressure of 130/80, heart rate is 150. It's slightly elevated for a man of your age Rhino. I think, if Dr Yates agrees, we should take you in to Broken Hill for observation." Matty said, handing over the ECG recording for Wayne to have a look at.
"For once, I agree with Matty on this one. So who is coming with?" Wayne asked as he looked between Harriette and their son who were standing in the stair way.
"Harriette," Rhino said straight away as Matty strapped Rhino in and Wayne assisted Harriette up the stairs and into her seat where he helped her but her seatbelt on. "He can feed the animals and water the crops."
Matty closed the door and checked that it was locked before taking his own seat and buckling in. "Cabin is secure Mira,"
"Copy that. Cockpit closed. All traffic in the Broken Hill area Centre Flight Op 257 IFR King Air 5 POP, taxiing McCartha Station air strip for Broken Hill." Mira called as she prepared for take off.
"Copy that 257, you are clear for take off. Contact Broken Hill VJC upon descent." Centre called back as Mira took off. She changed her station and made contact. "VJC this is MikeQuebecDelta, do you have a copy?"
"Go ahead Mira," Leonie called as she sat at the desk back at base with her notebook open.
"VJC we are 40 minutes out from landing, can we have an ambulance when we arrive," Mira said as they climbed to their altitude.
"Copy that Mira. See you soon." Leonie said before the communication line went quiet.
"Cockpit is open." Mira said, opening the communication lines within the plane
Before they knew it, they were landing back in Broken Hill and loading Rhino into an ambulance. "Take care Rhino and Harriette," Wayne said as they did hand over to the paramedics.
Mira grabbed her bag and iPad and departed the plane after cleaning, her phone vibrated in her pocket and she pulled it out. It was a missed call from a number that was blocked. Heading inside she made a beeline for Leonie at her desk. "Leonie is it okay if I have the rest of the day? Graham is here. I'll explain later," Mira asked quietly but urgently.
"Yeah that's fine. But I'm ringing later!" Leonie called as she watched Mira nearly run out of the building.
"Woah, you okay?" Wayne asked as Mira all but rushed past and barely missing him.
"Yep, see you later," She called back as she got into the taxi waiting out the front due to her carpooling with Wayne earlier that day.
Back at Mira's house, she paid the taxi driver and made her way up the stairs and quickly unlocking her front door and locking it behind her as she entered her house. She changed, grabbed a bottle of vodka, closed every curtain in the house and sat on her lounge. Panicking.
There was a knock on her door a few hours later. "Mira, you home?" Came Leonie's voice from the otherside. Mira stood up tentatively and walked over to the door and peeped through just to make sure. She opened the door and instantly broke down.
"I'm sorry, I panicked," Mira sobbed as Leonie hugged her tightly and led her back inside. She quickly texted Wayne to bring food and the others to bring drinks. She also bulk messaged the on call crew to cover tomorrow's shift. It would be a long night. "He's out of jail, he's going to find me.
"No he isn't. I promise. I know who you're talking about and with us around he won't find you. Ever." Leonie said, as there was another knock on the door. "Don't panic, it's just the team."
Mira stood back and wiped her eyes quickly as Leonie let them in. One by one the team hugged her before taking a seat in her lounge room. Wayne was last one through the door, he took one look at her and she burst into tears, he hugged her tightly.
"Sorry," she said, pulling away and wiping her eyes as they walked into the lounge room. Mira sat down on the lounge next to Rhiannon and Wayne sat at her feet.
"Don't be sorry Mira. It wasn't your fault, was never your fault." Rhiannon said hugging her close.
"Thanks guys, I know I haven't worked with you all long but you're family." Mira said, smiling for the first time since the call out.
They all sat in her living room and chatted for hours. Everyone slowly dwindled out until it was Leonie, Mira and Wayne were left. Mira had fallen asleep on her couch.
"If you wanna head out Leonie, I'll keep an eye on her. I only live two doors up," Wayne said, walking Leonie to the car.
"Thanks Wayne, I've called in the on-call team for tomorrow so try and let her sleep in. Goodnight Wayne," Leonie said before getting into the car and driving away.
Wayne walked back in and locked the door. He walked over to where Mira was and gently shook her awake. She woke up swinging, she accidentally hit him on the chin.
"Oh god Wayne, I'm so sorry." Mira said apologetically as she sat up and put her hand on his cheek.
"It's okay, come on go to bed," Wayne said, helping her up and giving her a little nudge towards the hallway which led to her bedroom and followed her up the hallway.
"This is going to sound ridiculous, but will you stay?" Mira asked, sitting on the edge of her bed, the farthest from the door.
"Sure can, get in. I'm going to double check the locks," He said turning away and walking out. He unbuttoned his shirt as he checked the door and walked back to the bedroom. He took his shirt off and and sat down in the chair that was in the corner of her room. Mira was snoring softly already, he picked up the throw blanket on the end of bed and wrapped it around himself.
Morning rolled around and Wayne woke up and looked over to see that Mira was still asleep. He stood up from the chair he fell asleep in and stretched out as he walked out to her kitchen to make a cup of tea. He put the kettle on and walked over to her fridge and had a look. Inside was an apple, a banana and a bottle of milk. He laughed to himself and closed the door. Picking up the mugs and walked back to the bedroom to find Mira in the midst of a nightmare, she hadn't had one all night.
"Mira, it's okay. You're safe," Wayne said gently sitting next to and placing a hand on her shoulder to help comfort her.
Mira said up gasping for breath and tears pouring down her cheeks. "Oh thank god, was a dream." She said leaning her forehead against his shoulder.
"I won't let anyone hurt you, ever. I know I haven't known you long but you're different Mira," Wayne said resting his head against hers. "But I'm not going to take advantage of you like this, we will get this sorted and then we can get to know each other."
"Thank you," Mira simply said, lifing her head up and smiling. With this her phone vibrated with a missed call from the same number as yesterday. "This is the second time, I know it's him." Mira started to panic again. Wayne laid a hand on knee and looked at her.
"Have you got an AVO or a DVO against him?" Wayne asked, an idea forming in his head.
"Yeah I have both, why?" She asked, rubbing her hands up and down her legs as she stressed.
"I'm calling the police. He knew we were coming yesterday, he hear your radio call to Harriette and he still didn't leave the property. He is in breach of those orders," Wayne said, pulling his own mobile out and dialling triple 0.
Within twenty minutes, the police arrived at Mira's, Leonie and Rhiannon also showed up to see how she was.
"Everything okay?" Leonie asked Wayne as Rhiannon darted inside to comfort her.
"Yeah, turns out Mira has an AVO and a DVO out against him so I called the police," Wayne explained as Mira recounted everything that had happened in the last 24 hours.
"Good, good. Her injuries weren't pretty, I remember the call. They lost her twice on the flight to Adelaide. She was lucky. She was in middle of her studies too, so extremely lucky with such a set back. They thought that she would of had brain damage and wouldn't walk again, she defied all odds that girl." Leonie said as they sat down out the front.
"Bloody hell, she is so lucky. So that must of been before my time?" Wayne asked looking at Leonie.
"Yeah you've been her 5 years, it happened 6 years ago. I'm surprised Graham doesn't remember her, he would of been the pilot." Leonie said, thinking to herself that she would have to ask Graham the next time she saw him.
"That would explain why she hit me last night," Wayne said rubbing his chin that was still sore from where Mira had whacked him.
"Oh dear," Leonie laughed rubbing his back as the police officers came outside.
"We have enough to suggest that he is indeed in breach of his orders. I spoke to his parents, they weren't aware of the AVO and DVO and agree he is in breach. We will make an arrest today," the officer said as Leonie and Wayne shook his hand and thanked him for his time.
Inside Rhiannon found Mira and hugged her tightly, "Everything is going to be okay." Mira nodded and smiled at her.
"I'm going to go take a shower, wash the night away." Mira said walking away towards the bathroom and closing the door behind her.
So Mira's past is an ex that abused her, will there be mental repercussions for Mira? Wayne kind of admitted his feelings, where will this go?
Just a note, this is an AU story at this stage, I'm trying to create a background history for Mira and Wayne on how they got together. I will add in the story where they took his chemo patient to visit her hometown, it is coming. It will all merge into one eventually.
