Crash!
The Teen Titans freeze. Their eyes flick to each other, then the ceiling.
"I have a terrible feeling about this," Kori whispers, voicing what they're all thinking.
Another crash, followed by the sound of glass breaking, and the Titans drop what they're doing. As one, they rush to Garfield's room. They don't have to speak to know that each is afraid of what they might find.
Dick slams his shoulder into the door, snapping the lock. The door flies open to reveal a massive gorilla tearing apart the room, smashing furniture, punching walls, breaking everything he can get his hands on.
Beast Boy.
An animal roar rips from his throat and his teammates leap into action.
Victor sprints toward his best friend, dodging a flying dresser. "C'mon man, this isn't helping anything." He barely ducks the wild fist thrown in his direction and he grits his teeth. "Talk to me, man! We can help!"
"Garfield!" Kori's voice rings out with concern and a touch of fear. She hovers above the rampaging gorilla, forced back every time she attempts to get close. "We know that you are in much pain." Tears glisten in her eyes. "Please, allow us to help you."
A backhand sends her straight through the wall and into the next room. The blow can't break her alien skin, but her eyes show that it hurts nonetheless.
"Snap out of it!" Dick shouts, slipping between every punch, kick, and projectile. He blocks the gorilla's next strike, his bo staff pinning Beast Boy's wrist against the wall. "Anger won't help anything. It'll only make you feel worse after."
Beast Boy lets out another roar, this one in rage. His form shrinks, the beast retreating to reveal the boy beneath. "What do you know?" he shouts. A snarl twists his face into an expression of pure agony and pain.
"She didn't mean everything to you. She didn't tell you she loved you." His shoulders heave, his face crumpling as tears spill down his cheeks. "You didn't love her," he chokes out.
"You're right." Raven steps around a broken lamp and the sea of glass surrounding it. "It was different for you."
Garfield buries his head in his hands and falls to his knees. Curled into himself and shaking with sobs, he looks so small. Like the child he was when he first joined the Titans, almost three years ago.
"We didn't know her like you did, but she was our friend too." Raven kneels in front of him and extends her hand. Black stains her palm, her powers promising relief from the pain for a while. Promising peace, however temporary. "Let us help you."
Garfield shakes his head vigorously. "No. No."
"You need rest." Raven could force him, but it would only make matters worse. Letting them help has to be his choice. "Please, Garfield."
The exhaustion crashes over his head like an ocean wave, shattering him like the glass scattered across the floor. All the strength leaves Gar and he just wants it to be over. To feel nothing. He clasps Raven's hand and lets the dark wash over his mind, bringing with it deep slumber. And most importantly, escape.
Raven catches Garfield as the tension leaves him and he collapses. He lies heavy and limp in her arms, as if entirely devoid of life.
Silence fills the room, the shared pain of a family when one of its members is hurting. Tears stream down Kori's face as her gaze travels to Garfield's bruised and bloody knuckles, taking in the damage he did to himself. Dick hangs his head, the guilt of not doing enough to prevent this etched into his features. Victor stares down at Gar, fists clenching in a mirror image of his best friend's anger and pain.
Gently, Raven lowers Garfield to the floor and sits back on her heels. She can't tear her gaze from his face, from the deep lines creasing it even during an induced slumber. So she closes her eyes.
Wave after wave of pain washes over her, from Garfield and Victor, Koriand'r and Richard. For once, Raven can't distinguish one from the others. She can't pick out their unique signatures, the distinct pattern of rising and falling emotions that marks each. Right now, they all share the same wounds, the same grief for their fallen friends.
For Garfield.
And for Tara.
