A/N Alright, this should be going up 2 days after chapter 13. And if it isn't, that means I actually got some sleep which is probably a good thing. Either that or I got distracted with it and rewrote it a time or two to fix it.
Glad to see my grand return was well received. Coming at you with another 5kish words.
I sighed in resignation after the latest attempt on my life. Sneasel really was a little monster, she kept trying to stab me when I'm not looking or zoned out. It's fine though, she's not trying to hit anything vital… I think.
On the plus side, I am really getting used to Detect now. Even in human form it's reliably activating whenever she attempts to use her oversized claws against me. It's a real shame though, since right now I'm in the mood to do exactly nothing related to training.
I scanned Sneasel earlier over what moves she knew. She knew Scratch, Taunt, and Quick Attack apparently. This was a lot to work with actually, even if it was only 3 moves. Quick Attack is ridiculous upon some minor testing.
Look, I know it's called Quick Attack, but you don't actually need to hit something to use it. The problem being that it really only lets you move in a straight line towards wherever you're going, without more training that is, so if your opponent reads it and calls you on it you're taking the full hit for free.
On the plus side, Alonso can confirm it is extremely annoying to deal with if used this way. He could use Mean Look to make it so that Sneasel couldn't Quick Attack away from him, but she could still use it to sidestep and dodge attacks that way.
I'm honestly surprised that Alonso was still going. The damn bird is still trying to actually match my sleep schedule, and the fact that a strange Absol was constantly staring at me wasn't helping matters when it comes to me sleeping.
So instead I decided to make this a training day for my 2 teammates. Hopefully enough to tire them both out enough to make them sleep. I wasn't sleepy, but I was exhausted. Not for the first time, I silently lament to myself over the fact that my Pokedex can't play music or call anyone. Hell, I don't even get news on my Pokedex. These would be things that I could probably get in the coming years, but not having it hurts.
Going from a world where everything I wanted to listen to or read was right at my fingertips was… hard. It certainly made sleepless nights much worse for me. I even tried using my illusion ability to play sounds, since when I copy things I sound the same as them. Unfortunately, it either just doesn't work like that or I'm not skilled enough to make it happen. So, I can't replicate and replay my favorite songs.
Instead, I now am forced to do other things to entertain myself when I'm not busy working on Dark Pulse. Chief among them is just looking around. Mostly at nature and the landscape, which means I'm pretty content with my current location.
Sure, a mountain range is a bitch to move through, and doubly so when you don't have a destination in mind, but it was gorgeous to look at. While not as beautiful as the Alps from my old world, the snow covered mountain range is still stunning.
Which is why I'm getting annoyed at Absol constantly staring at me and distracting me from the mountain right above me. It's slightly hard to see them in the snow covered expanse, but the dark splotches are enough to differentiate them.
"Don't you have some sort of sense for when it's going to happen and then come back?" I grouch at the Absol. I already kinda knew the answer to it, but a man can hope.
"No, it is determined by strength," was the short and expected answer I received. Ignoring the slight amount of disappointment I got by that answer, I went back to staring at Mr. Silver and its surrounding mountains.
So… world ending disaster hmm? I mean, technically that could be caused by my mere existence ending the world that was meant to be. But in all honesty, that's probably reaching and too hopeful. The more likely option is that I'm just about to be thrown into some real and visceral danger. Joy.
How do I prepare for that? Well, besides getting stronger of course. Find more teammates? Maybe, but in all honesty we are really weak compared to any cataclysmic disasters. I'm sure as hell not going to be empowered by the power of friendship and win the trust of whatever Legendary happens to be nearby and is capable of saving the day.
And on that note, Legendary Pokemon really need to stay the hell away from me, and for that matter, Mythicals can too. I want no part in that hodge podge of a mess. Can I claim diplomatic immunity as an ambassador of my old world? Arcues could vouch for me, they are probably cool like that.
But then they'd know I'm a reincarnate and the curious ones will come. God forbid if one of the Mews found out, they'd never leave me alone again. Sorry, Arceus forbid. Gotta remember to do that now.
I groan to myself and look over my currently human body. I was lying in snow, so my clothes are soaked through from the slow melt but not like that matters much honestly. One flicker of my illusion and bam, right as rain.
Aaaand thinking of that causes me to frown, since now I'm reminded of the unsolved mystery of how I work. It makes no sense, I should consistently be turning into whatever I mirror or I should not turn into a physical human. I should really ask Professor Oak for some help looking into this. It'll probably interest him, and I sure as hell don't know what the normal Zorua can do.
I'm not sure exactly how long I just laid there in the snow, staring at a mountain while the sounds of destruction and training played in the background. But it was long enough that I started dipping into more melancholy thoughts.
Stuff like how my family was doing in my old world. Or if they even survived what killed me, since I was never told what and hadn't bothered to ask. Did my parents move into a tropical area like they wanted to? Did my sister get her financial affairs in order?
And were my parents in this world okay? I should really find them if I can, but I'm not sure how to even go about it. I know what my mother is, obviously, but my father is a mystery. What Pokemon in my egg groups know both Counter, Detect, and Dark Pulse?
Not for the first time, I lament not memorizing all of the information from my old world prior to my untimely demise. But then again, nothing for it since I would have to have known it would be relevant.
Fun fact, there was no Silver City at the base of Mount Silver in this world, or if there was it was done away with long ago. Probably because it being in a mountain range would make it hard for international competition so it got moved. Or just because it's one of the things that was decided to be different here. Who knows? History books if I read them probably.
I groan and sit up, shaking my head to clear out my sad thoughts that weren't helping me with anything. I look over at my teammates, and see they are both looking a little worse for wear. I quickly whistle and motion the pair over. They stop their current scuffle and make their way over together covered in scratches and bruises.
"Now… why have the two of you fought hard enough to cause bruising when I told you not to? It's not as if we have an Absol following us around predicting a disaster or anything, right?" I ask, voice filled with sarcasm as I motion towards Absol.
"Well, you were lying in the snow and we got bored. You… aren't going to get sick from that right? I've heard stories about when non-ice types do what you did," Sneasel responded, looking over my soaked form. Alonso immediately snaps to attention and he frantically looks me up and down. I roll my eyes slightly, and flicker my… you know what, I'm calling this a transformation since it is. I flicker my transformation and let the water slosh onto the snow surrounding me before returning to my human form.
"Trust me, I don't have to worry about it. Now, stop deflecting. Why were the two of you acting like idiots?" I repeat bluntly, giving them a deadpan stare while reaching into my satchel. Sneasel looks down at the ground and scuffs her clawed feet, digging some trenches into the snow. Alonso just looks away from me, hunching down a bit.
"She thought you were being lazy Don, and it evolved into a fight from there," Alonso eventually mutters, seemingly properly chastised over it. Sneasel gets indignant over this, and her head snaps up as she glares at Alonso.
"Well, I was being lazy since I haven't done anything useful in the past few hours. Here, eat these. We can't afford to run into danger with both of you almost knocked out. We still have an additional teammate to try and find," I remind them, giving Alonso a look when he opened his beak to try and defend me. He quickly backed down though as I produced a handful of Oran berries and tossed them towards the pair.
"Now, Sneasel, have you seen a Larvitar around here? They look like this," I pull out and flip open my Pokedex, which already had the image up. Having a sentient computer sure is useful. Not that it's talkative at all. Probably because I still haven't named the guy.
Sneasel looks intensely at my Pokedex, before slowly shrugging. "I've seen one or two before, but honestly I have no idea where they are now. I tried stabbing one once, but it was a rock type I think, so I didn't try again," she replied. I… wasn't sure what I was expecting but whatever.
"Alright, that's...fine. And yeah, it is a Rock/Ground type. More after the last evolutionary line member, where it becomes a Rock/Dark type Pokemon. I am a Dark Type specialist anyways. That's my excuse for how I can talk with all of you by the way, that I have a special connection to Dark Types. It's technically correct, the best kind," I end with a smirk, flipping my Pokedex shut and pocketing it.
She gains the characteristic Dark Type look of appreciation on her face when I explain this, understanding when people are being absolutely fucked with for entertainment purposes. I'm not sure how it works, but every Dark Type I've explained parts of my goal and plans to seems to gain this look. I should probably take a look in a mirror at some point to make sure I don't too. Don't want to give the game away early after all.
"That's not even the best part. See, almost everyone is in the dark that I'm actually a Pokemon. I plan to hide this until we make it through the League and into the Tournament, where I can reveal it on a large publicly viewed stage where millions are watching," I state confidently, loving my selfmade goal. After all, what use is being reincarnated as a creature with superpowers if I don't use them to properly mess with people?
If Sneasel looked excited before, she looked positively ecstatic at this. She immediately began to chuckle and clap her hands together. "Ooooh! I don't know much about this league and how it works, but I don't think Pokemon are supposed to be Trainers so I think that'll make them mad. How are you going to avoid them getting angry at you?" Alonso seems to perk up at this, since I haven't quite explained my rough plan to him yet. Well, no time like right now it seems.
"Basically, the League lives and breathes off of rating and viewership. It's how they can afford all the expensive stuff and they can afford to give trainers discounts and stuff. They make a lot of money off the popular Trainers people like to watch. So, the plan is to become the 'villain' of the League where they make a lot of money off of me by making me seem like the bad guy. Then, once I do my reveal ratings shoot through the roof and they can't afford to get rid of me!" I exclaim with a chuckle, even though I know it isn't entirely true. They could afford to get rid of me, but I'm hoping the possible backlash and numbers going down plays to the greed of the top level executives and stays their hand.
"And with explanation time over, let's see if we can somehow find a Larvitar?" I ask as I close my satchel and work out the stuff muscles I accumulated by laying on stone and snow for the past few hours through all of the morning. For their part, my 2 team members just seem excited now.
LINE BREAK
Sadly, no Larvitar was to be found this day. We ventured inside Mt. Silver because its Pokedex entry mentioned something about it hatching underground and needing to eat dirt. We found all manner of Zubat and Golbat covering the cave roof, a few Ursaring, a pack of Golducks, and an honest to Arceus Magmar, but not a single site of a Larvitar.
You know what we did find, though? That I developed anxiety inside of caves now! Isn't that just wonderful? Nearly die and have someone die in front of you a single time and all the sudden in places that look and feel like it you can feel the dust and blood mixing into grime over your skin again as your legs turn to jelly.
Alonso immediately tried to take me out of the cave, but I stubbornly refused because I wasn't about to admit defeat to a damn memory. Consequently, we continued on to look for a Larvitar willing to join us even though a large group of Zubat overhead was likely to get me to freeze for a moment and me quietly cursing myself afterwards.
Sneasel looked confused but quickly grew used to it, Alonso looked worried the whole time and if he felt like he could physically drag me outside he would, and Absol was just continuously staring at me. Funnily enough, Absol calmed my nerves a bit since its eyes never lit up victoriously or in increased interest once, just attentively waiting.
At least the prophet over here isn't showing signs of doom, so I used that as a calming measure since I shouldn't be so damn sweaty in a cool cave. My body really needs to chill the fuck out.
And despite me going through all that unpleasantness to search, we didn't even find one of the little bastards. At least Sneasel was considerate enough to not attempt to stab me while we were inside. Just to spite myself, I insisted we stay just inside the cave for the rest of the day and night.
I'll be damned if I admit defeat to a cave and my own traitorous body, no matter how many times I feel phantom shakes in the ground and try to wipe my hands clean with no avail. If a whole night staying in here didn't help then I'll admit defeat but not a moment until then.
Alonso recognized I was in the middle of attempting to cut my nose off to spite my face, but I refused to budge and eventually he was forced to go to sleep since he didn't sleep the night before and got into that fight with Sneasel. Sneasel didn't even try to stay awake, she went straight to sleep against a large rock.
I'm fairly certain that Absol was born devoid of the need to sleep, since it still hasn't broken vigil and I sure as hell haven't slept. I'm sure that eventually my insomnia will win against Absol's strange behaviour. I'm sure of it.
Anyways, as my team went to sleep and I was left awake next to our strange Absol tagalong, I was just thinking over my projected team members I wanted. I feel like I haven't picked the strongest Dark types available to me, considering Grimmsnarl isn't on my list, but overall I'm pretty happy with it.
Besides the fact I'd have to go so far out of my way to get one, there's also the fact I chose the name Grimm and having a Pokemon called Grimmsnarl on the team would just make things awkward. Also the Pokemon just looks awful and I stand by that. No offense Grimmsnarl fans, but that Pokemon looks like an abomination to match its typing.
I think I cover most of my weaknesses with my projected team. My only concern is Fairy Typing and if it exists or not yet. If it does, pain and suffering. If it doesn't, I am a very happy Dark Type. Wait, why am I wondering? I can literally ask my Pokedex. I reach into my pocket and pull it out, flipping it open despite the fact the screen brightness inside of a dark cave makes me think that daggers of light are assassinating my eyes.
"Hey Pokedex, is there a type of Pokemon called 'Fairy Type'?" I inquire to my machine. It seems to think for quite a while on it, and if it didn't have infinite battery somehow I'd have thought it had died. This world has the most fucked random tech level by the way. If it wasn't the most boring way of living in the Pokemon world I'd have just been a tech mogul and heavily abused all of this random tech they have.
"There are newly discovered Pokemon in Kalos that have been described to have the typing of 'Fairy'. This is currently under investigation, as mutations and new types seem to propagate to areas with the old typing very quickly through generations," it informs me. It really is a shame I can only look up Pokemon related events with this thing, otherwise I would send a damn gift basket to Oak for giving me it.
I still might do that anyways, an infinite battery encyclopedia of Pokemon knowledge is overwhelmingly useful. Especially since it automatically updates near to towns and I don't have to do shit.
Well, I still have to name it. What's a good name for a machine? One that knows a lot of information but constantly is in search of more… Holy shit, thank you sleep deprived and slightly anxious mind, you have truly blessed me.
"Pokedex, I want to assign the name 'Omnissiah' to you. Is your machine spirit pleased with this?" I say with a large internal chuckle. There, my inner Warhammer nerd is pleased, even if I'm more of a Fantasy guy than 40k.
"This unit is not sure what you mean by machine spirit, but it has been officially designated as 'Omnissiah' for future interactions," my Pokedex beeped back at me. Good, good, now I can receive serotonin every time I ask a question to my Pokedex and cryptically respond to any questions on what that name means.
So, now that that order of business is finished… what now? I thought about turning into my Zorua form since it was more durable, but then I realized that my human form had longer legs and could thus run faster. Staying human it was then.
I try to wipe my hands off with no success and keep steady breaths, but only the second was successful. I quickly reached my conclusion on this: This absolutely fucking sucks and I need to go beat up some Team Rocket grunts ASAP.
I'm still holding onto that grudge by the way. I just need to get my hands on a single grunt I can 'question' for locations and names. It's a criminal location, it isn't like I'm dealing with some sort of 'die before I talk' holy order.
But it's not like one will just drop in my lap, I need to figure out how to find one with little money and resources. Who do I know that would have an inkling of where a couple Team Rocket members are?
Well, there's Tweedledee and Tweedledumb down at the docks, but I suspect they won't be helpful in any way. I don't have a way to contact an Officer Jenny since I don't know them. Professor Oak would probably spot my intention really fast and stonewall me. Nurse Joy from Azalea Town?
Wait, that one might actually work. Spin a story about wanting to know about that group of egg smugglers, or whatever she called them, since I already know that it's Team Rocket at work there. Talk about wanting to know where I come from and wanting to track down and meet my parents, etcetera etcetera. It's not even a lie, since I do actually want to know those things. It's just a... happy accident if I just so happen to get other information out of the grunt first.
I will have to be careful though. I have 2 untrained and untested Pokemon and have just started out, and I'm just as battle tested as them. It's going to be a bitch taking down even a single isolated grunt, no matter how bottom of the barrel they are. So, I plan on cheating. Heavily.
Now, let's see if I can actually manage to sleep in this place. I'm really hoping for a few hours here, I need it badly.
LINE BREAK
I groan lightly as I am forced back into awareness by a loud noise. What the hell? I was actually sleeping here who the fuck woke me up- oh shit, is that a Larvitar?
I quickly scramble to my feet and take stock on what's going on. Alonso was currently harrying Larvitar, dodging repeated Rock Throws and trying his best to not get sniped. Thankfully it looks like he already used Mean Look since it didn't look like it even wanted to run away. Sneasel was looking extremely beat up, and busy trying to lift a rock off of herself. Ah, that's gotta hurt. She's weak to Rock Type attacks. More dodging drills for her it seems, she literally can't afford to get hit with her 6 weaknesses.
Pulling my attention back to the fight when another crash of a rock impacting the cave wall sounded out, I cup my hands around my mouth and take a deep breath in.
"Hey, what the fuck is going on here?" I yell out, grinding the fight to a halt with Larvitar still hoisting another rock over its head. "I actually managed to get some damn sleep and I wake up to this? How long was I asleep anyway Omnissiah?"
"3 hours, 24 minutes, 39 seconds." he cheerfully responds. I look back over at the pair, ignoring that Sneasel finally got that rock off of her and was sitting up now.
"Why is the human so angry?" Larvitar asks Alonso, dropping his boulder since the fighting had ended. Larvitar was… remarkably calm considering he was just in a fight a moment ago before I yelled.
"Oi, not an actual human, I can understand you. Now, are you three going to tell me what the hell was going on or will I have to ask the tagalong here?" I question as I point towards Absol, my voice full of exasperation since I was already so done with this shit. Seriously, couldn't this have happened when I was awake?
"You look very human to me," was the short answer I got from Larvitar. I give him a blank stare, and look over at Alonso who was just as confused as I was. Wait, you know what I haven't actually proved anything except my ability to talk to him. Which should be enough but whatever.
I shrug and sigh, doing the "what can you do?" motion before focusing and swapping to my normal Zorua form. Larvitar immediately gasps and points at me. "You are no longer a human! Are you a magician?" he asks excitedly.
Great, a future Pseudo-legendary that's as dense as the rocks it throws. You know what, I can work with this. "No, I'm a Pokemon. I can just turn into things, see?" I focus again and change into looking like Alonso. Sadly, this is just an illusion and I can't actually fly. On the plus side, I can mimic Alonso's death glare properly now. Without the accompanying effect but still.
Larvitar points at Alonso, then back at me, then back at Alonso. "There are now two of you. The magician is very good!" Mmmmnope, not dealing with that right now. Hopefully he'll get less dense when he evolves. Hopefully. I switch back into human form and squeeze my eyes shut, trying to stem my oncoming headache. It wasn't really working, so I just accepted my lot and opened my eyes again.
"So, Larvitar, I'm building a team full of Dark Type Pokemon and we'd love to have you with us. You may not be one yet, but your final evolution is a Rock/Dark type. You'll be able to fight lots of strong enemies and get a lot stronger yourself. Interested?" Hey, I gave an actual on the spot pitch to join the team. Nice, didn't think I would actually be able to do that. Larvitar seems really confused until the fighting and getting stronger part of my pitch, but once that hits he seems to get really excited.
"I'll join, but you have to fight me! I got to fight everyone else so I wanna fight you too!" he yells excitedly, not even waiting for my answer before he picks up his rock from before and throws it at me hard enough to kill me if it hits. Thankfully, the very moment he said 'fight' I figured something was coming and so I was already switching to my Zorua form.
It still scared the shit out of me when I changed only to have a speeding rock scream over my head and impact the wall, exploding into chunks and shards that filled the air with dust and blood, ceiling dropping move move move-
The next boulder quickly snapped me out of my unwanted reliving of Union Cave through Detect activating and having me throw my body to the right so the rock skips on the ground where I was standing and not on my body. Thanks Detect, you're a real pal.
I quickly charge and snap off a low power Dark Pulse to keep Larvitar honest, already not paying attention to if the move hit or not as I scramble at a diagonal to make it harder for Larvitar to hit me while also moving in closer.
By the startled sound but lack of a grunt, I guess he dodged. I'm not all too sure, because of how damn hard it is to see with the dust currently choking out the air around me.
I cleared the cloud and saw a mark on the ground right next to Larvitar, who was looking at me angrily with a smaller rock in each of its hands now. I continue my diagonal run, with the classic plan in mind.
Mainly, run in, get hit while prepping Counter, use Counter and suddenly I'm ahead in attrition and if I keep it up I'll eventually win. Well, provided they don't have some sort of otherworldly amount of health before they go critical and faint.
Larvitar quickly starts to use more but smaller rocks to try and hit my small and fast form, but I don't make it easy on him by occasionally switching tracks and angles.
Detect covered me with some of the more alarming hits, but a few smaller ones snuck themselves through. They stung like a bitch, but not nearly as bad as when I was fighting against Garrick.
The bigger problem was that it was damn difficult to close in without getting pelted by rocks the size of a human head. Which leads to my second problem.
The rocks that missed were still around, and it was making it difficult to easily loop around Larvitar while getting closer.
Nothing for it then, I focus on Detect as much as I can as I beat a sharp angle inwards, charging straight towards Larvitar. His eyes widen and he grabs a large rock, overhead throwing it at me as I leap above it and charge my counter and close my eyes, preparing for a hit.
Larvitar opens his eyes wide and his entire body glows with a deep red glow, leaking into his eyes as he snarls in rage.
Uh oh.
A/N
And there we go! I meant to get this out around noon but I had to attend my Nephew's 5th birthday party. Little tyke was so excited I didn't have a chance to actually upload and post.
Had a hard time getting this chapter how I wanted it, so it's a day late since I rewrote the bastard, twice.
I would also like to repeat that if anyone wants to be a Beta Reader I invite you to message rewardedreincarnation gmail . com
This is where it gets really really fun for me. Everyone ready for a large amount of plot threads to start up in the next couple chapters?
Peace
