Roman swallowed the last mouthful of his morning coffee. He placed the cup and the bowl and spoon he had used for cereal down in Seth's dishwasher. He stood back up and looked at Seth who was still sitting at the kitchen table.
"I know that look," Seth shook his head. "Don't."
"Take me to her," Roman said.
"I won't do that," Seth said.
"Then tell me where she lives and I'll go there myself," Roman said.
"After what you told me yesteday, I'll do no such thing. She's not thinking about herself here, Roman. She's thinking about you. And from what she told me about Elias, she's damn right in being scared what he might do to her, to you and maybe even me," Seth said.
Seth drummed a finger nail on his mug and let out a sigh.
"This is why she's been pulling away. I thought she was just busy with her new job but it all makes sense now. Elias is still around, and she can't escape him. She's been trying to keep me safe," Seth said.
"She needs our help," Roman said.
"What the fuck can we do, Roman? I know how you both work. You talk to ghosts and convince them to give up the hold they have on earth. You make them disappear. You can't make Elias disappear," Seth said.
"Seth," Roman said.
"I'm sending her a text," Seth said.
Roman watched as Seth pressed his lips tightly together and wrote a text to Nissa. Roman didn't know what exactly Seth was writing but he had a pretty good idea. He knew Seth and his way of expressing himself. From what he could see, Seth cared a lot about Nissa, but he also knew Seth and how he could get stuck in his own head.
"There," Seth said. "Happy now?"
"Not at all," Roman said. "Imagine how lonely and scared she must be on her own. She needs us, Seth. Or at least she needs you. You're her friend. Don't allow her to pull away anymore."
"You're right," Seth sighed. "You're absolutely right. Fine, let's go. Elias already knows where she lives so it's more safe that we go to her. You better make sure he doesn't follow us home afterwards. You can see him. I can't. Keep your eyes out."
"Will do," Roman grinned. "Thank you."
Seth got up, walked through the house and opened the front door. To his surprise he found Nissa standing out there. Both of them had their phones in their hands.
"I sent you a text," Seth said.
"I got it," Nissa said.
"What are you doing here?" Seth asked.
"I figured if Roman is a strong-willed as I am when it comes to ghosts, he'd seek me out eventually," Nissa said.
"He actually just convinced me to go to you," Seth said.
"Let her in, Seth," Roman said.
"Right," Seth chuckled.
Seth stepped aside and Nissa walked in. She looked over at Roman and gave him a tired smile.
"Mind checking to be sure? I didn't sleep last night since he came to my apartment. I had to drive around all night to get away from him," Nissa said.
Roman looked outside but he couldn't see any ghosts.
"It looks safe," Roman said.
"I smell coffee," Nissa said.
"There's still some left. Help yourself," Seth said.
Nissa walked out in the kitchen and poured herself some coffee. Roman and Seth followed behind. All three of them sat down at the kitchen table. Seth on one side, Roman and Nissa on the other.
"I missed you," Seth said.
Nissa nodded and started crying.
"I know. I'm so sorry. I missed you too," Nissa said.
Roman put his arms around her to comfort her. She leaned into him and cried for a minute. The two men sat in silence until she pushed herself out of Roman's arms and nodded.
"I killed him," Nissa said.
"You did no such thing. The asshole took his own life," Seth said.
"I let it happen," Nissa said.
"Rightfully so," Roman said. "Seth filled me in yesterday. From what I hear, you're one strong woman to have gone through all that."
"Thank you," Nissa said.
Seth reached over the table and took Nissa's hand.
"What can we do to help you? How do we get rid of Elias?" Seth asked.
"There's only one way he'll let me go," Nissa said.
"What is it?" Roman asked.
"I have to die," Nissa said.
"Oh, hell no!" Seth raised his voice.
Seth squeezed Nissa's hand tightly. He started feeling angry. Nissa had finally escaped her abuser, and then he was still haunting her from beyond.
"It's the only way," Nissa said.
"I'm not letting you fucking die!" Seth snarled.
"You don't understand," Nissa said. "Once I die, Elias will disappear. He doesn't know what's beyond his life as a ghost. He believes in a place that doesn't exist. He'll let go of his last hold on earth to try and find me in the afterlife."
"But you'll be fucking dead too," Seth said.
"Not if we do it right," Nissa said. "That's why I'm here."
Nissa looked from Seth to Roman, and then back at Seth again.
"Roman can see Elias. He will know when he disappears. When that happens, you can bring me back. You know CPR, right?" Nissa said.
"It's too risky," Seth said.
"I trust you," Nissa looked from Seth to Roman. "Both of you."
"I'm with her," Roman said.
"You can't be serious," Seth said.
"It's the only way," Roman said. "Elias is never going away unless she dies."
"Fuck!" Seth yelled.
Seth jumped up from his chair and kicked it in a rage. He turned around, grabbed the kitchen counter and squeezed until his knuckles went white. He was not one to react this way but this was different. He turned around with tears running down his face and looked at Nissa.
"You better fucking come back to me," Seth said.
"I will. You will bring me back," Nissa said.
"You're putting so much on me right now. I don't know what to do," Seth said.
"Bring her back," Roman smiled. "That's all you gotta do."
"And if I can't?" Seth asked.
"There was a time where I didn't believe in myself. You showed me the way. You believed in me," Nissa said. "Just like I believe in you."
