Chapter 2
Spinel puts the eye-liner pencil down and slowly stands up…she then slowly turns around, revealing her eyes were high-lighted more through the eye-liner and she had beautiful magenta eyes, a small but cute pointy nose…but what was weird, was that her cheeks had black lines down them, obviously caused and drawn by her. She smiled wildly.
SPINEL: I'd love to make a new friend.
When she fully turned, facing Steven…he noticed she had a big heart printed on her shirt, which seemed to look tight because of her bust.
And for a second…if not longer, Steven only saw…beauty.
His heart started to pound softy and not since meeting Connie for the first time, he had butterflies.
STEVEN: Whoa…
Peridot was watching Steven's facial expressions. She pushed her tongue into her cheek and nodded gently, smiling afterwards.
PERIDOT: Like what you see, Dr Universe?
STEVEN: (Half ignoring Peridot) She's…beautiful…
PERIDOT: Ahem. Dr Universe?
STEVEN: (Looks back at Peridot) Huh, oh…uh…
PERIDOT: I take it, you like what you see…?
STEVEN: Oh, well…I mean…(Looks back at the window)…at first glance…
PERIDOT: Might I remind you that this is business and not pleasure. I will also remind you, that what you're seeing in there at the moment, is still the same being that stabbed a woman and bit a police officer's ear off.
STEVEN: Yes. Yes, I'm aware…
PERIDOT: And yet, you are looking at her as if she's innocent. Or in your earlier words…"Beautiful".
STEVEN: Well, that's a fact I'm…uh, seeing…
PERIDOT: I'm sure your quick opinion of her will change. Please, remember, Dr Universe, she has hurt people. She has a problem.
STEVEN: Well, you can't judge a book by its cover.
PERIDOT: You are correct, for I have "read the book"…and the police reports.
SPINEL: (Walks to the window, from the other side) You're…n-not leaving, are you…?
STEVEN: (Press the button on the wall for communication) No, not yet I'm not…
SPINEL: Please don't go…
STEVEN: I won't-
SPINEL: I don't want to be alone…
STEVEN: I won't be going anywhere, Spinel. I'm just having a talk with Dr Peridot Green.
SPINEL: (A little spite) She's boring!
Steven couldn't help but chuckle. Peridot was about to speak, but Steven stepped in front of her to stop her. Peridot sighed with a huff. Spinel just turned around and sat on the floor again, playing with make-up box. Steven then removed his finger away from the button.
STEVEN: (To Peridot) She seems to know you well enough.
PERIDOT: Dr Universe, if you're not gonna take this seriously-
STEVEN: I am, Peridot, I am…but you have to be a little calm about it. Remember, she's a human being to.
PERIDOT: A human being that has harmed others and herself? I will take precaution over caution, thank you very much.
STEVEN: What I mean is…treat people with dignity.
PERIDOT: Did you even listen to what I said…?
STEVEN: Yes, I did. But in order to get results, we must treat our patients with respect. Now, you say she wasn't herself when she attacked those people, correct?
PERIDOT: That's correct.
STEVEN: Then we just need to find out why she did, what she did. What triggered it? What made her attack those people and for what reason…?
PERIDOT: Results vary, especially if someone has a split personality. It's trying to believe one or the other.
STEVEN: Hmm. She said she didn't want me to leave…
PERIDOT: What has that got to do with anything?
STEVEN: Well, my theory is…that she was abandon when she was young.
PERIDOT: Hmm. Quite possibly.
STEVEN: Standing here just looking at her isn't going to solve anything. I need to talk to her.
PERIDOT: Are you sure that's wise, doctor?
STEVEN: You can't learn anything from a piece of paper. It's better to hear everything from her. (To Bismuth) Would you kindly open the door?
BISMUTH: Yes, doctor.
PERIDOT: No, wait, hold on!
STEVEN: Peridot, its fine-
PERIDOT: No, you can't just walk in there. I won't allow it…
STEVEN: What's the matter?
PERIDOT: Dr Universe, I cannot allow you to just waltz right in there. Remember the report, or do you have a mind of a goldfish.
STEVEN: I can handle it.
PERIDOT: If she hurts you, I'll never forgive myself. She is unhinged and unpredictable. If anything was to happen to you…
STEVEN: I promise you, it won't…
PERIDOT: (Sighs) Ugh, you are so…stubborn!
STEVEN: And even being stubborn gets results.
PERIDOT: Oh for God sake, fine! But Bismuth is going in with you?
STEVEN: (Chuckles towards Bismuth) Just like with Eyeball Ruby, eh?
BISMUTH: Yes, only this time, this patient won't have a knife.
Steven at this point, press the button to communicate with Spinel.
STEVEN: Is it okay if I come in?
SPINEL: (Turns her head and then smiles) Of course…it'll be nice to talk to someone different.
STEVEN: Wonderful.
Bismuth then unlocks the door, letting Steven lead the way.
PERIDOT: Steven…
STEVEN: Huh, you called me by my first name.
PERIDOT: (Rolls her eyes) Just…be careful. As soon as there's any trouble, you come out, do you understand?
STEVEN: Yes, I understand. And don't worry…it'll be fine.
Peridot nods as Steven and Bismuth enter the room. Spinel turned around and stayed on the floor. Steven put his hands in his pockets, looking rather calm. Bismuth then locks the door and stands in front of it.
STEVEN: Can I sit down…?
SPINEL: Of course you can. (Giggles) You don't have to ask me. (Steven smiles and sits down, crossing his legs) Does she have to be here though…?
STEVEN: (Turns to Bismuth and then back at Spinel) It's just for…our protection.
SPINEL: Your protection you mean…(Sighs sadly)
STEVEN: Do you want her to leave…?
SPINEL: That…would be nice. (Chuckles a little) I mean, I…I barely know you and yet, I…I feel I can trust you. And only you. You seem…nice.
STEVEN: Thank you. (Turns to Bismuth) It's okay, you can go. I'll be alright.
BISMUTH: Are you sure…?
STEVEN: It's cool. Really.
BISMUTH: (Looks at Spinel suspiciously) Well, okay then. Just…knock on the door when you're done.
STEVEN: No worries.
Bismuth nods and slowly leaves the room, locking it from the other side.
STEVEN: Well now, let me introduce myself properly. My name is Steven Universe.
SPINEL: (Smiles) I'm Spinel Diamond. It's really nice to meet you…
STEVEN: Likewise.
SPINEL: You're a doctor, aren't you?
STEVEN: Uh, yeah. How did you know that?
SPINEL: (Shrugs) Because it's the only people that see me…
STEVEN: (Rubs the back of his head) Yeah, I…guess that's true…ha.
SPINEL: You seem different than the other doctors, though. You have that friendly face.
STEVEN: Thank you, Spinel. That's really sweet of you. You seem friendly as well…
SPINEL: That's…not what the other think…
STEVEN: Oh, and why's that?
SPINEL: (Shrugs again) They think I'm a freak. They think I'm dangerous.
STEVEN: Well, I don't-
SPINEL: (Interrupts. Speaks a little louder) But I'm not! I'm not a freak! I'm not dangerous! I just…don't remember…stuff. And…a-and what I do remember, I…I wish I didn't…
STEVEN: It's…okay not to remember most things, Spinel. Sometimes it's better that way…
SPINEL: No, it's not…I…I want to remember but, I…I just can't…(Starts to get teary)…they told me what I did but…I just don't remember. Honest, I don't…
STEVEN: I believe you, Spinel. Look…we don't have to talk about that. I can see it's put a lot of stress on you. Let's talk about something else…
SPINEL: Huh. Really…?
STEVEN: Yes, really. What you did, is in the past…that's over now. You can't dwell on it…
SPINEL: It's just frustrating not to remember.
STEVEN: And you know what, that's not important right now. I just want to…get to know you.
SPINEL: Really…?
STEVEN: Yeah, really. (Pulls out a hanky for Spinel and hands it to her) Let's talk about you and the things you like?
SPINEL: (Accepts the hanky and wipes her eyes. It smudges the mascara) Things I…like…?
STEVEN: Yeah…
SPINEL: Um…
STABBING THOSE WHO CAUSE ME NOTHING BUT PAIN!
SPINEL: (Shaking a little) I…I…
STEVEN: It's okay, Spinel, if you don't want to…(Trails off)
SPINEL: No, I…I mean, yes, I…I do like things. It's just…n-nobody ever asks me that. At least, not for a long time. It's normally…horrible questions to things I don't remember…
STEVEN: Well, I'm asking. (Smiles) I'm interested.
SPINEL: (Shaking even more) Ah, aaah?!
*From her vivid memory…
Police interrogation room.
POLICEMAN: YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID! YOU'RE JUST SICK LIKE THE REST OF THEM! DON'T DENY IT!
Memory cuts to:
POLICEMAN: YOU DON'T REMEMBER?
SPINEL: N-No…I…
POLICEMAN: (Slaps Spinel across the face) CUT THE BULLSHIT! YOU REMEMBER! You wanted to kill her, didn't you? (Spinel starts crying) DIDN'T YOU?
SPINEL: NO!
Memory cuts to:
Spinel jumps and attacks the policeman…he screams, as she chomps on his ear and pulls it away from his head, ripping it with ease.
Memory ends*
Spinel was near to tears again. Steven was a little surprised how her emotions escalated it but in hindsight, he probably should've seen this coming.
STEVEN: Spinel, its okay…just…let it all out…
SPINEL: (Sobs) You're so nice to me…
STEVEN: I'm…I'm nice to everyone. That's just me…
SPINEL: (Sobs) And now I'm…c-crying…
STEVEN: Which is fine.
SPINEL: I'm so embarrassed…
STEVEN: Don't be embarrassed. There's nothing wrong with crying, you know, it's okay to cry…
SPINEL: Huh. It's not a good first impression, is it…?
STEVEN: Doesn't matter.
SPINEL: (Sniffs) Just…(Sighs)…I can't believe I'm crying in front of a cute guy…
Steven was slightly taken back by that. It was a sentence that came from nowhere. Steven smiled and slightly blushed…but he didn't want to repeat what she said, so not to embarrass her even more…or that she didn't realise what she'd said, either way, he kept his mouth closed. He just chuckled and handed another dry, soft tissue. She accepted again…and acknowledged his simple kindness. For Steven, when a patient cried, he always let them get on with it…it was important never to interrupt someone from crying, it's always best to let it out…if you give them that freedom, they will talk and express themselves more.
Steven watched her…even when crying, she still looked beautiful…it was as if the ugliness of crying couldn't penetrate her, despite the black mascara dripping down her face, along with the tears and the smudging from the tissue, it didn't change the fact that she was still beautiful to look at…and yet, Steven knew there was so much pain going through this woman's mind: Frustration, pain, anger, confusion and unanswered questions…the list could go on.
All Steven knew, was it was almost something he could relate to. Through the history of his patients…Spinel seemed to be the one that might understand…but that time wasn't now. After a while, Steven seemed to be in a trance…as if time slowed down, just so he could stare at this cute, beautiful woman, a bit longer…
SPINEL: Dancing…(Sniffs)
STEVEN: (Shakes his head slightly) Huh, what…?
SPINEL: (Sniffs) You asked me earlier what I liked. Dancing, I like dancing. (Calming down a bit)…and singing…
STEVEN: (Smiles) Dancing and singing. That's wonderful!
SPINEL: Is it…?
STEVEN: Yeah, of course it is. I used to sing and dance as well. Well, I used to sing with my dad.
SPINEL: (Smiles) I used to sing and dance for my…(Her face drops)
Say it! SAY IT! GO ON, SAY IT! SAY THE ONE WHO GAVE US THIS PAIN!
SPINEL: (Tries to control herself) Uh…m-my…uh. Well…l-let's just say…I…I don't any more. (Awkward chuckle)
Steven in some way knew she was about to say her "mother", at least that was his theory…it was too early to bring this up, so quickly decided to change the subject.
STEVEN: It's okay…you don't have to explain yourself.
SPINEL: Uh, t-thank you…
STEVEN: Think you could sing for me?
SPINEL: (Surprised) W-What…?
STEVEN: If you're okay with it, that is. You don't have to…
SPINEL: Um…i-it's…just…I…might be a little rusty and…I…I'm not confident with everyone else listening and…
STEVEN: (Hands up) It's cool.
SPINEL: I…I w-would…but…it's been a long time…
STEVEN: I understand. I don't want to force you to do anything you don't want to do, okay?
SPINEL: Thank you…
He's so cute~
HE'S NOT CUTE! HE WANTS US TO TALK ABOUT…HER!
Just…go away…
SPINEL: Uh…u-uh, I could…d-dance, if you w-want me to…?
STEVEN: Are you sure?
NNOOOOOO!
SPINEL: Yes! I'm sure.
STEVEN: That'd be nice…
Spinel stood up…and Steven backed away, just in case he needed to give Spinel some room. Spinel was in her starting position, with her head bowed down. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes…she then gently started to stroke the air, she turned and jumped like a ballerina…in fact, that was the dance she was inflicting. She span gracefully, flexible when needed too and jumped, stretching her legs, as she gilded through the air like a delicate bird coming in for a gentle landing.
Steven watched in awe…her dancing was graceful, poetic and just simple wonderful. The fact she did this without music, made it more amazing.
Spinel, through dance, could imagine the music in her mind…and letting that sweep her off her feet and pushing the passion out into her dance.
It seemed that Spinel glowed…
Eventually, Spinel had stopped and the dancing came to a peaceful end…she stood in her finishing stance, as Steven quickly got up and clapped. Spinel started to blush and tried to cover her embarrassment.
STEVEN: Wow, Spinel that was…that was AWESOME!
SPINEL: Oh, it was just a…f-few moves…when I did ballet…
STEVEN: A few moves, no, that was…just…inspiring, it was wonderful. Wow, so…so passionate.
SPINEL: (Blushing badly) Thank you…it…it's been a while…
As if on cue, Peridot buzzed through the walls communicator.
PERIDOT: Doctor Universe, I need to have a word with you.
STEVEN: Can't it wait, Peridot…?
PERIDOT: No, it can't. I need to show you something.
STEVEN: Hm. Okay…
SPINEL: You're…going…?
STEVEN: Yes. But…but I promise I will come back.
SPINEL: Will you?
STEVEN: Spinel, you're…uh, look it's a bit unorthodox for me to say this…but…you're amazing. Yes, of course I'll come back. I want to learn more about you.
SPINEL: Please tell me you're not joking…?
STEVEN: No, no really, I will come back, I promise, I really do. I always keep my promise!
SPINEL: (Smiles) I…I hope you do. You're the only one who's…ever been nice to me.
STEVEN: Spinel, I promise you. I'll be back. (The door opens) I won't be long. Promise!
With that, Steven leaves. He couldn't believe how far he was getting with Spinel, even he was thinking this was to quick but nonetheless, it felt like progress. But in the back of his mind, no matter how much he found this woman cute and beautiful, he still had to remember, that she was a patient…and not pleasure. But…that seemed easier than done…it was far too early and not professional. Peridot was not outside the door, which frustrated him a little and figured she walked back to her office…he sighed as he made his way there.
Bismuth turned the key, as the room echoes of the door locking, leaving to herself but she smiled wildly.
SPINEL: (To herself) He's…he's promised…
HE'S LYING!
SPINEL: N-No…
HE'S LYING! THEY ALWAYS LIE! THEY ALWAYS LIE IN THE END! HE'S JUST LIKE HER! HE'LL LEAVE YOU! HE'LL LEAVE US! JUST LIKE THE HER!
SPINEL: (Falls to her knees) Noo! No! No! No! No! Noo!
LIES! ALL LIES! THEY ALWAYS LIE! THEY NEVER COME BACK! NEVER! THEY NEVER COME BACK!
