Tracey was sat down on a chair by the side of Daphne's bed. She had been brought in just under 2 hours ago and Tracey had been allowed to visit about 15 minutes ago. She had waited outside the hospital wing for quite a while, nearly as soon as she had arrived but she had gone to drop her stuff off in the first year Slytherin girl's dormitory.
She had found out that Daphne had fallen off of her broom and that she had broken her left arm and foot. She had also bashed her head against the floor but not too badly. Some people had come in to check on her but not many, To be fair, Daphne wasn't the sort of person to make many friends, she kept close to the ones she could trust, which wasn't many.
Suddenly she heard the door open, she didn't bother to turn her head as it was probably the school healer, Madam Pomfrey. However what did surprise her, was when Harry Potter brought a chair and sat with her. She couldn't have hidden her surprise very well because Harry seemed to chuckle when he first looked at her.
"No need to look so surprised Tracey, only checking in on her" he said with a gentle laugh
"Well can't I be surprised a Ravenclaw is checking on a Slytherin, it's not very common you know"
"Well, it is more common than a Griffindor and besides, I will need someone to help me get through Herbology with just you around"
None of them said anything, they just looked at each other and a couple seconds later, the both of them starting laughing as if they had heard the funniest joke in the world, none of them knew why they were laughing it just happened. They spent the next five minutes not looking at each other, scared that they'll be going for round 2 if they did. Eventually they did calm down.
"So, what's up with Queenie here ?" He asked in a casual tone which surprised even himself
"Well, she fell off her broom believe it or not"
"How did she manage that one ?" she thought she saw a hint of concern in his eyes but it disappeared after a blink, she guessed it must have been a truck of the light.
"Well," she began, she didn't know the entire story but she could tell him what she knew, "from what I've heard, the group in which Daphne was part of they were trying flying at 12 meters or so and she had picked up speed and fell. That's what I've been told, I wasn't with her when it happened, because I'm used to flying but Daph never liked it. I think it has something to do with safety, she doesn't seem very safe on a broom, I don't know if it had something to do with a previous accident or not but she doesn't like it much."
"That's pretty much what I had heard from Dean in Gryffindor although he said that he thought Ron and Draco had caused a part of it, don't know how though." There was silence for a bit, it wasn't uncomfortable or awkward though it was comfortable really. "What injuries does she have ?"
"Well they've already been healed, but she had a broken foot and a broken leg, both on the left side."
"Oh well that's good then. I've brought some food for you both, didn't know if you'd be hungry, it isn't much but well-"
"Thanks Harry," she interrupted him with a small smile on her face "I'll give it to her when she wakes up, I'll be going to the Great Hall for some dinner soon anyways"
He deposited a couple sandwiches on the little table on the side of the bed. "Anyways, I'd best be off, wouldn't do for Queenie here to think I was worried now would it" he said with a lazy grin on his face. Tracey shook her head and rolled her eyes at the antics of the boy and he made his way out of the infirmary.
Daphne had woken up during the early hours of the morning after her accident, her left arm and foot felt a bit stiff but except for that she felt fine. Despite having been out cold for the passed however long, she was still tired. Next she noticed two sandwiches on her bedside table. At that point, her stomach made a gurgling sound and she noticed how hungry she was so grabbed one of the sandwiches and bit into it. It was a chicken, egg and mayonnaise sandwich with some tomatoes and lettuce inside. She ate one of them quickly and decided she would sleep, she hadn't been this tired in ages.
Just as she was getting ready to lay down, Madam Pomfrey entered the room, she suspected that it was her charms that had alerted her that she had woken up. "Good morning miss Greengrass, I've just got to do some checks on you and then you'll be fine to remain here and sleep or return to your dormitory, it's up to you. She started waving her wand over her and a look of concentration overtook her face. Daphne, having done some reading in healing spells, knew this to be a diagnostics charm. 2 minutes later the nurse had finished and had cleared her. Daphne decided to go back to her dormitory. So, she grabbed the sandwich and made her way out.
With it being on the fourth floor she had to make her way down. It wasn't exactly bright so she lit her wand with a quick 'Lumos' and made her way down the first flight of stairs and halfway down she heard footsteps. She wasn't worried as the matron had given her a note explaining her presence in the corridors. She continued on her way down and noticed Professor Quirell walking around the third floor. She thought it was odd as she didn't see the need for a teacher to wander the corridors at this hour, it's not like there was a danger coming to the school, well, not to her knowledge anyways. She decided to dismiss this thought when she heard a loud bark when she had started descending to the second floor. She turned back to examine but she didn't find anything. She was about to turn back around when she saw Quirell with a large scratch down his right leg. She didn't know what had caused it but it couldn't be nice and Quirell certainly didn't seem like he wanted to be seen with it as he made his way back to his room at a brisk speed.
She was tempted to go look into the corridor when she heard footsteps behind her and so she decided to act as if nothing had happened and began making her way back to the common room. "Ms Greengrass, what might you be doing here ?" a voice asked from behind her. She turned around and noticed Snape looking at her.
"I was just making my way back from the infirmary sir, I just got cleared by Madam Pomfrey." she said in the most innocent voice she could.
"Very well, hurry up then, you won't have much sleep as it is." She nodded and made her way to her dormitory in silence, questions bombarding her mind. 'What was that loud bark and why was Quirell there ? He seemed frightened.'. She arrived in her room, tried clearing her mind of any of those thoughts and went to sleep.
She woke up the next morning with a groan to the sight of Tracey looming over her, it's not that she didn't like Tracey, but she liked her sleep, and she had just interrupted this one. It was still quite early going by the light outside and the fact that she felt she had barely slept so she grabbed her quilt and hid herself entirely under it hopping Tracey would forget she was there. Tracey just let out an amused sigh and pulled the quilt off of the Ice Queen. "Leave me alone" Daphne complained.
"Not a chance, you've got to get up so we can go down to the Great Hall and grab something to eat, besides we've got classes soon" she said in a voice far more cheerful than was necessary
"But it's like 5 o'clock in the morning Trace, I'm sure it can wait a bit longer"
"Actually, it's coming up to 8 o'clock so we had better hurry, we haven't got long left" She then proceeded to pull Daphne up out of bed despite the protests and when Daphne had finished getting ready, they started making their way to the Great Hall, they didn't have a long walk which was one of the advantages of being in the dungeons although the Hufflepuffs were even closer being next to the kitchens which couldn't have been far from the Hall itself but she didn't know exactly where they were.
"Did you eat the sandwiches that you had at your bedside table last night ?" Tracey asked when they had found a seat at the Slytherin table.
"Oh yeah thanks, I was starving when I woke up, I had one when I woke up and another on the way back from the hospital wing, which reminds me I'll have to tell you something about that later, just remind me."
"Well," she began "first of all it was Potter who brought you those sandwiches" at this Daphne gained a curious look on her face, why would he visit, she wasn't exactly kind to him "he said that we must be hungry and then he asked what had happened. And secondly why can't you tell me now what happened ?"
Daphne thought about the other girl's question. She could do but someone might hear her and she would get in trouble either with Snape or Quirell. "Well I can't tell you here because I might get in trouble if Qu- someone found out" Tracey seemed to catch on to the slip up and nodded her head and continued eating in silence.
A little while mater they made Thierry way out to grab the things they needed for today's classes. When they arrived in their dormitory, Tracey had a look that clearly meant 'explain', so she did.
"Yesterday on my way back, I was just coming down the stairs from the fourth floor coming out of the infirmary and I heard someone, so me being me, I decided to check it out. It turned out it was Quirell. I thought it was odd a teacher walking around the castle at night but didn't think much of it and continued on my path. Just as I was going down to the second floor, I heard a loud bark so I turned around to see if I could figure it out. A couple seconds later, Quirell came out of the third floor corridor with a large scratch down his right leg. I was going to see more but I heard someone coming from behind me. Turned out to be Snape and he told me to hurry back to the common room."
"Do you think we should go see what's there ?" Tracey had always been a bit nosy ever since Daphne had met her, she'd always try finding out what had happened to who, when and for what reason.
"No Trace, if Quirell came out of there with a scratch the size it was, we'll probably end up as a couple piles of bones"
"Oh please it's not like he's a very capable wizard, have you learnt anything since you've been in defence ?"
"Well no you're right but still, it's not like we've got a lot of experience, he's actually fought the dark arts" Tracey gave her a look as if she didn't believe a single word she was saying. "What, it's true he has, the other teachers have said so too, it was that that led him to stutter, he must have gotten scared" she shrugged.
Harry was currently by the lake thinking. He was curious about the third floor corridor ever since he and Hermione had stumbled on it at the start of October and his interest in it only increased when he found out about Nicholas Flamel from Hagrid. He needed to get into the restricted section of the library but he didn't know how to without asking a teacher. The best person to do it would be Hermione but she would have to use a different excuse. Maybe she could get a book on animagi, it was fascinating after all and cool would it be if you could turn into an animal. He briefly wondered if it meant that he would be able to understand them too.
He got up and made his way back to the castle still trying to figure out another way to get in but no other came. He actually wanted the book about animagi too which didn't really help in his thinking of another way. He doubted Hermione would be in the common room at this time so made his way to the library, Hermione's favourite place in the castle. Harry liked reading too, but not on the level that Hermione did.
When he got there he found Hermione surrounded by books of all sorts around her. "What are you doing ?" Harry asked as casually as he could seeing all the books.
He seemed to have caught her off guard however and she let out a low shriek before looking up to see who had distracted her from her work. "Hello Harry, I would prefer it if you didn't try to scare the hell out of me. And to answer your question,"she continued "I'm trying to see if I can find out more about Flamel without any luck and I just finished my potions essay for Professor Snape which you still haven't started I might remind you."
Harry groaned at her response, he had completely forgotten about the essay and it was due the next day. "On a more cheerful note though, we're on holiday after we give that in" he said with a grin on his face
"Yes we might be but I doubt the teachers are going to let us get away without any homework for two weeks" she seemed happy as she said this, and that just irritated him. How could you like homework he thought to himself, it's not like most of it was fun, especially not the theory part of it all. He grabbed a chair and sat opposite Hermione's desk and pulled out a roll of parchment, some ink and a quill and began his potions homework. He knew it wasn't enough to get an O but hoped to get an E but he was sure he would get at minimum an A.
He had heard from Neville that he was just about insufferable when they were in class, the fact that they had it with the Slytherins didn't help that matter, he had always been biased towards his own house. He wasn't exactly mean when he was with them but he didn't sound anywhere near as bad as with the Gryffindors.
A bit over an hour later he and Hermione made their way to the Great Hall to have some dinner. They weren't exactly hungry but decided it was best to eat now because otherwise they'd be starving by the time dinner was over, well Hermione would at least, Harry had had a bit of experience in the matter.
They were enjoying their meal when Neville came over to them. "Guys, I've gotten permission to go into the restricted section from Professor Sprout, I said that I had a mimbulus mimbletonia at home and that the books in the normal library didn't cover it, so she agreed, we can go tomorrow if you want, I'm staying here for the Christmas Holidays anyways so I can read it during that time."
Harry had told his plan to Hermione about getting in but now it seemed he didn't need it. He was a bit disappointed but they had gotten the initial thing they wanted. "I'm staying too, I want a bit more time to discover Potter Manor so I'll visit it during the summer holidays.". He had decided on that a couple of weeks back. He had wanted 10 years he supposed 6 months more wouldn't kill him. They both knew that Hermione was going home, she had missed her parents a lot since the start of the year, she had quite a good relationship with them.
The next day, the three of them had met up outside the library, Harry and Hermione had just come out of Potions whereas Neville had just come out of History of Magic so he at least was well rested. They entered together and gave the note to Madam Pince. She made sure it was Professor Sprout's writing and signature and let them in. Neville had made his way over to the Herbology section whereas Hermione made their way to the History section and Harry to the Discovery section. They had spent about 5 minutes in there when they heard Hermione say 'I've found him' low enough for Madam Pince to not overhear them. The other two made their way over to her and she showed them a part of the text.
Nicholas Flamel, the noted alchemist, is the only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone. The stone can turn any metal into pure gold and it also produces the elixir of life, which can render the drinker immortal. Last year, the alchemist celebrated his 630th birthday. The three of them were surprised at his age especially considering the age of the book itself but also surprised that such an artefact as currently in the school. They quickly made their way out of the restricted section with Neville hiding the book from the librarian and they made their way back out. They hoped to find out more about the stone in the book. Neville was also happy that he had gotten another book on Herbology, the boy was passionate about the subject.
A/N: Thank you for the reviews you've left
Replies:
Thank you for pointing out the mistake I made, I've changed it back :)
I'd love to make the chapters longer but I would need to find some more time in my day for that especially because it takes a bit of time for some of the things to come to me, sorry.
Thank you for pointing out the fact about Dodge, I didn't think about it in that way, I've changed the amounts in both vaults quite a lot, it should cover the reviews you've all made about him not having enough considering certain factors.
I've also gone over all the chapters with a spell checker, I am English it's just that I don't have the best spelling and there's also the fact that I was writing rather quickly, but I apologise for any inconvenience :)
