The Christmas holidays were upon them once more. Hermione had gone home on the Hogwarts Express the day after they had found the book on Nicholas Flamel. It was currently Christmas Eve and the students who had stayed at school, however few were all in a good mood, Christmas had represented happiness to them throughout their childhoods, but to Harry, it was just another day. He had never received anything really except if you count odd socks, coins that weren't worth more than 50 pence and possibly a crayon or two if he was lucky.
But this year, it felt different, he had friends now. He didn't expect them to buy him any presents, he was just glad that he could buy them something now that he had some money. All the presents he had, he had ordered through owl order, a concept he had discovered in the Daily Prophet. Flourish and Blott's had put an advert in the paper about it, and he had asked Professor McGonagall about it and had provided him with some which the school received for exactly that purpose.
For Hermione, he had gotten her some books on all sorts of magical things, she had once mentioned that she wanted to know more about the wizarding world, and he thought that it would be a good gift for her. He had gotten a couple of books on Herbology for Neville, he knew the boy was obsessed with the subject. For the rest of his Ravenclaw first years including Dean, Tracey and even Daphne who he didn't expect anything from in the slightest, he had given them some chocolate and sweets, both magical and muggle.
Harry and Neville were currently playing chess in the Ravenclaw common room, he had given his friend permission to come in and nobody had minded in the slightest. None of them were exactly good at the game, but it was all still fun.
"Found out anything more about Flamel ?" Harry asked. He was going to do some research himself, but Neville still hadn't finished doing his own, so Harry was waiting for his friend to finish.
"No nothing much really, it just tells us some things about his life and his research. Did you know he had kept the stone hidden from everyone for nearly 100 years before someone caught on that something fishy was going on ?" At this Harry shook his head. He was surprised he had managed to keep it hidden for so long considering he had quite a few years of research. "Eventually though he had to come clean because, even though he's a wizard, none of us live until we are 200 normally. Dumbledore himself is 110 right now and that still isn't the lifespan of a wizard. The average age that most wizards die is 138 years old which is nearly double that of muggles so its understandable how he kept it hidden for so long"
"How is it that wizards live for so long ?" Harry asked intrigued by the subject.
"Well our magical core helps us go on further, well at least that's what I understood, it helps keep us young somehow." Harry nodded at this, it was a question that he had for quite a while now, he had wondered if magic helped in the aging process.
Just then Harry saw a move he could do to incapacitate Neville's king and check-mate him. He made the move and they both seemed to contemplate any possible move for Neville. Harry already had him in check, so it was hard to get out of that situation, and then they realised the game was over. Both boys first bumped each other before Harry's stomach growled.
"When are you not hungry honestly, you eat more than most people in one day than they do in a year" Harry chuckled at this and shrugged his shoulders. Harry looked at this clock and noticed that it was 6 o'clock and that meant that they could go and eat.
So, both boys made their way through the door to Ravenclaw tower and made their way down to the Great Hall. They found themselves joking about plenty of things when Harry remembered something.
"Oh I forgot, me, Michael and Anthony, we were going to throw snowballs at the back of Quirell's head and try taking his turban off. Hopefully they are still up to it when they get back" Neville laughed at the Harry's antics. The boy just didn't know when to stop, he had already annoyed Malfoy at every possibility he had. Sometimes it consisted of levitating his book into the blond chis while he was writing, and yet he still hadn't been caught.
Once they entered the door to the Great Hall, it surprised them to see just one long table. There was only a few people there, all houses and teachers mixed up just talking, so they made their way over.
"Ah Harry, Mr. Longbottom, I'm glad you could join us" Professor Dumbledore began, "we didn't see the point in us all being separated for such a festive occasion, so we took the liberty to all sit at one table. Now, it won't begin for another 30 minutes so settle in Mr. Longbottom, I just want a word with Mr. Potter here."
Neville sat down making sure there was a seat next to him for Harry while Dumbledore led Harry away from the table. The old man had come to a conclusion. He would personally hand Harry his father's cloak so that he could measure the boy's emotions and hopefully see a spark of trust in his eyes.
"I know that Christmas is tomorrow, but seeing as we are both here, I thought I would give you your gift here." At this Harry's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, he didn't expect any presents, certainly not from the headmaster. "It isn't wrapped unfortunately." He had meant to wrap it, but he wouldn't see the boy's reaction then.
He put his hand in one of the pockets and pulled out a silky-watery substance. Harry hadn't got a clue what the thing could be by the looks of it. At first, he had guessed that it was a blanket, but he didn't see why Professor Dumbledore would give him a blanket, then again, he didn't see why he would gift him anything in the first place.
"Your father left this with me before he died, it was time I returned it to you" Harry eyes began to water at this. It would be the first thing that he owned of his parents, sure there was everything in his vaults, but he hadn't been there yet so this was officially the first thing he touched that belonged to his father. He took it from the headmaster's offering hand and felt it. It was a weird sensation to say the least, it felt like flowing water through his fingers, yet it never stopped, as if it kept falling.
"What is it ?" was the first thing he asked without even looking up at the professor which irritated the man quite a bit, because he wanted to gauge the boy's reaction, but he hid that fact. He needed to be on good terms with him to find out more.
"That Harry, is an invisibility cloak. Extremely rare, although on a normal Cloak the enchantments would fade away, they have never faded on this cloak since it had been in its possession." Of course Dumbledore knew why, he just wasn't going to tell the boy, because if he did, he might try reuniting them, and that just wouldn't be any good for the Wizarding World, for the Greater Good.
"Thank you sir," he said trying to keep his voice firm, "this means a lot to me." He gave a curd nod to Dumbledore, which was what the old man wanted, it was a sign of trust. He knew the boy didn't fully trust him, how could he, not after the magical block, but it would come eventually, well he hoped at least.
Dumbledore smiled at Harry before they both made their way back to the table with Harry tucking the cloaked into his pocket. Harry was sat down between Neville and a third year Hufflepuff who introduced himself as Cedric Diggory. The table began to fill as time went by and when everyone was there, it had just gone past 6.30 P.M and Dumbledore clapped his hands and food began to appear as well as Christmas festivities such as Christmas crackers.
Harry and Neville had pulled one together and Harry now had a wizard's hat on. The meal was quite a cheerful affair even with a teacher who looked more lost than anything else. Cedric had told him that she was the Divination teacher and that she was mental.
Harry managed to have a good laugh with the rest of the table about quite a few things. All around, one of the best meals of his life, if not the best. It had lasted a good two hours and nobody had seemed to mind but eventually, people started getting up, wished everyone a merry Christmas and made their way to their dormitories. Harry and Neville got up about 15 minutes after the first person had left, half the table had taken off by that point.
Harry woke up a bit later than normal, after all, he had a snowball fight the day before between him and a few others. He wanted to stay in his warm comfortable bed which for some reason seemed more comfortable now than ever. He stayed in there for another 15 minutes before deciding it was time to get up. As soon as he did, Hedwig had come to the window and started pecking at it asking for it to be opened, to which Harry obliged, but quickly closed it after she had come in, he didn't want to let all the cold in after all. At that point his eyes turned back to his dormitory and his eyes bulged at what they saw. A big pile of presents, not as big as Dudley would get but still quite big.
He rushed over and opened a few, mostly containing chocolates with a card. He reached for another which was packed very neatly, so he took his guess at it being from Hermione, there was a letter attached, and it had her neat handwriting on it. He looked inside and saw a book: The advanced art of combat. Harry quickly skimmed through it to look at a few things, and he had really wanted to check it out. He knew that dueling and combat were different, but it wasn't exactly a bad thing to learn a bit of both, especially considering some people took dueling as a combat, so it was good knowing some other spells than just dueling.
He opened a couple more and then picked up another one that looked different to the others, one which he took to be one from Neville. He opened it to find a target with wings. Harry was curious and then, he decided to see if the letter that came with it explained it.
Merry Christmas Harry !
I hope you like the present I got you, if you don't know what it is, it's basically a target to train for your aiming and precision. I know you are already pretty good at it, but it never hurts to train more. Anyways, I hope you like it.
All the best,
Neville
Harry got a bit excited about this and activated the target, and it began to fly around. So Harry flicked his wrist and started shooting it. The more he hit it, the more it shrunk in size but after a few seconds of not hitting it, it went back to its original size. Harry really like the present his friend had gotten him.
He deposited it on his bed and continued opening the other presents. What really surprised him was when he found one from Tracey and Daphne collectively, which was a book on Herbology called: An Amateur's Herbology Book. He let out a low laugh at this he knew it was just a joke towards him, and he proceeded to open the letter.
Merry Christmas Thunderbird,
We hope you read this book over about twenty times by the time we have Herbology again, after all you're not exactly very good at it, and we're getting annoyed at doing all the work. Anyways have a good holiday Lightning
Your partners,
Queenie and Trace : P
Harry had a good laugh at this for a couple of minutes before setting the letter and the book down on his bed.
The next present he opened was a book, and it was quite a big book. He looked at it and there was nothing special on the cover. That's when he opened it, and he felt his eyes getting watery as he looked upon pictures of a man with messy jet black hair and a pretty girl with red hair and a large smile holding a baby in their arms, also with black hair poking out of its skull. He turned the page and found one of a wedding. To his fathers right was another man, who Harry guessed was his father's best man, who had the biggest smile possible on his face. They looked like the happiest people in the world in this picture. It was like happiness was the only thing in the world at that point for them. Harry wiped at the tear that came out of his right eye. He felt tremendous joy course through him but also a touch of sadness not having gotten to know his parents.
In one of the pages was another letter, and Harry was curious as to who had sent him this.
Hello Harry and Merry Christmas,
You probably won't remember me, but I was a good friend of your parents when we were in school up until that Halloween. I know I should have written to you sooner, but I couldn't face it, I had lost everyone that I held dear that day and the next.
I was wondering if you would like for us to meet each other during the next holidays, I'm sure Professor Dumbledore would allow you to visit in Hogsmeade just this once. Show him this letter so that he knows it's true. I'll pick you up at the gate if you agree to it. Have a good Christmas Harry.
Hope to see you soon,
Your honorary uncle,
Remus 'Moony' Lupin
Harry read and reread the letter a few times to make sure it was real. He was going to meet someone who had known his parents. He was going to head off to Dumbledore's office but decided it could wait a bit after all the next holiday wasn't for another while, so he had time, but he was definitely going to accept.
He opened his last present which was a few dungbombs from Michael. It was at this point that Harry remembered his father's Cloak and decided to try it on, so he grabbed it and went into the bathroom where there was a mirror. He walked in so that he was in front of it and pulled the cloak over himself fully and watched in amazement as he fully disappeared without a trace. He knew that this would come in very handy, especially with a certain corridor that he wanted to check out.
A/N: Thank you for all the reviews you've left, and thank you for the follows and favorites. I didn't really expect you to really like the story as I didn't think I had much imagination, and you'd get bored with it, so thanks a lot :)
Replies:
I hope the story is better now that I run it through a spell checker, there may be a few bits missing, but I hope it's better
About Tracey being in the ship with Harry and Daphne, I don't think that will happen, that isn't the sort of thing I aim for but there may be a few moments later on where there's hints of it
On the subject of nicknames, if you could propose a nickname for Tracey from Harry's part it would be appreciated, I can't find one for her. He doesn't have to have a nickname for everyone it's just for Tracey I'd like one
About how powerful Harry will be, it won't be God-like, he will be powerful in his own right, but he won't be overly powerful.
