I picked up another follow and my first favourite, so thank you to that person! And you're on board just in time for the end, because this is the final chapter!
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Mark sat on the sofa, cradling his two-month-old son Felix Joshua Brennan. It felt like he'd been waiting a long time to meet him. And that was without counting the ten hour labour, during which Imogen had come as close to filing for a divorce from him as she'd ever done. But here they were.
Imogen entered the front room and smiled at the sight. "Well, there's a moment for a photograph if ever there was one."
"He is pretty photogenic, isn't he?"Mark agreed.
"So's his dad."
Mark looked up and smiled at her. "So's his mum."
Imogen couldn't help but glow at that one. She gave Mark a quick kiss and sat down beside him. He couldn't quite believe that this was his family now, the three of them. "I really wish we could stay like this forever,"Imogen remarked. "Just looking at him. I still can't believe he's ours. But…"
"But we have to go to work and pay the bills and sort out his college fund,"Mark concluded.
Imogen winced. "Don't, okay? I am not ready to accept the fact that he's going to get bigger and start answering back."
Piper came bursting in through the front door. "Okay, no need to panic, the cool aunt is here so the boring mainstream parents can leave."
Mark and Imogen reluctantly got up and Mark passed Felix to his sister-in-law. "You sure you're going to be okay with him?"
"Yep, got it all sorted,"Piper confirmed. "I can get on with my writing while he's having a nap, maybe even give him a starring role in my next vlog. Advantages of working from home."
"And it'll be practice for when you have yours,"Imogen commented.
Piper shot her a withering look. "I've already told you. Tyler and I are going to wait at least another year before even thinking about having children. We don't all get pregnant as soon as we get married, you know."
Imogen sighed. "How exactly did we get to the point where you were the responsible sister? I'm a lawyer."
"Yep, but I found it a lot easier to identify the love of my life. You two took ages to get your acts together. Now shoot! Skedaddle!" She gesticulated emphatically towards the door.
Mark and Imogen did as instructed, heading down the driveway towards their cars. "Meet for lunch in the usual place?"Mark asked.
Imogen nodded. "Unless there's a sudden crime wave that keeps us both busy. I'll text you if there's a problem."
"Right." They paused, reluctant to part as ever. "You know, it feels like everything that's happened…it's worth it, to be here."
Imogen nodded. "Maybe we could have got together sooner or in a better way, but...I don't think I'd change a thing. And hey, Mum and Dad have even started showing an interest in visiting their grandson."
Mark mulled this over. "So long as we can avoid Brad punching me, I think it'd count as a win."
"I'll protect you." She gave him a lingering kiss before finally managing to drag herself away and head into her car.
Mark watched her go, marvelling again at how his life had turned out. He had a beautiful wife that understood him better than anyone ever had, a wonderful son who would grow into a fine man, and a life that would leave all of them satisfied for the rest of their days. Everything was grand.
All opinions welcome!
