Athena woke to her alarm; after turning it off she took a moment in the silence to just lay there. She had been a little worried as it had been the first night with Evan in the house and just down the hall. The night before Evan had sat and played dolls with May until dinner. The boy had been very polite in his manners when eating his plate of spaghetti and garlic bread; but there was a moment that Athena feared she had frightened the child when she caught him shoveling the food in a little too fast and she had told him to slow down. He had teared up her seemingly harmless words and she knew it had been the wrong thing to say.
Athena had to make sure to tell the eight year old that he wasn't in trouble; that she wasn't going to take his food away - as that was what had started the tears that maybe he thought she would - and that she was only just worried he would choke and hurt himself. He had nodded in understanding and did his best t slow down his eating. It wasn't totally slowed but it was better then before so Athena just subtlety watching the boy as they finished dinner.
She had to stop him from dragging a chair over to the sink to wash his own dishes; explaining that she appreciated his help but as long as his dishes made it into the sink that was all he needed to worry about. He had nodded and returned the chair to the table before walking around the whole table and pushing all the chairs in to be perfectly aligned together before joining May back in the living room.
After dinner was bath time. Athena had bathed May and then set the bath for Evan. She had wrapped the cast on his arm in a plastic bag and told him to be as careful as possible not to get it wet; and that she would be back once she had May dressed. It only took her about ten minutes; she had left May to play on the floor in her room before returning to the bathroom to find Evan quietly playing with May's bath toys; soapy bubbles wrapped around him; his arm in the cast and plastic bag leaning on the side of the tub.
Athena had helped him wash and rinse his hair and then gave him a wash cloth to clean his body when he told her he could do it himself. While she left him to it she went and found him clothes to sleep in from his bag of clothes they had taken from the abandoned home he had been staying in. Athena had made sure the clothes were all washed earlier during dinner. When she had returned Evan was already out of the bath and wrapped in the towel she had left on the toilet seat for him.
Once he was dressed in shorts and an oversized t-shirt Evan had joined May in her room to play for a little bit longer before it was time to be tucked into bed. Earlier Athena had shown Evan his room. It wasn't much; it was one of two guest rooms that just had a full sized bed, dresser, nightstands and empty desk and chair; but Evan had been excited to have his own room. Athena had asked him about it and he had actually told her that he and Maddie had shared a room at their uncles; had to share a bed and everything.
She had tucked May into bed and then sat with her little girl tucked into her side to read her a bedtime story. Evan had sat at the end of the bed listening contently. Once May was asleep, Athena had walked Evan to his room and tucked him into bed as well. Because she knew that the bedtime stories that she had for May were a little more childish then something Evan would rather probably read; Athena had told him they were going to go shopping and they would pick him out some books for his own. The smile she had gained from the little boy had melted her heart.
Once Athena had gone to bed herself an hour later, she had been worried about the boy. Would he have nightmares? Would he wake in the middle of the night and wander the house? Would he leave in search of his sister? He had already asked about her multiple times since Athena had brought him home. She had told him there were people looking for her but they hadn't been able to yet. Athena had hoped being honest with the boy that maybe he would give her some clues as to where his sister could be holed up; maybe another place they had been before that abandoned home.
She had no luck in that aspect; the boy had only shrugged.
Now it was morning and Athena really needed to get going. She had the next three days off to help Evan get settled at home so she didn't need to worry about work; but she wasn't sure how much longer May or even Evan would stay sleeping. Finally climbing out of bed she slipped on her house slippers and grabbed her silk robe off the hook on the back of her bedroom door; slipping her arms into the sleeves and wrapping it around her body; tying the belt. She opened the door and stepped into the hall; May's bedroom door right across from her own.
The door was cracked open like she had left it after tucking her daughter in the night before so she stepped forward and pushed the door open. Now that her little girl was three years old she had her own little princes bed that Athena had bought her for her birthday seven months ago. As the door swung open and Athena took her first step into the room she paused; her eyes falling on a lump of blankets on the floor by the bed. A single hand with a dark blue cast sticking out of the side of the blankets; a few dirty blond curls at the top.
Athena frowned at the sight for a moment before looking at the bed to find May curled up at the edge of her bed against the bar railing; an arm sticking through the bars and reaching for the boy in the lump of blankets on her floor. Both children were still asleep but as Athena took another step into the room the blankets shifted and Evan sat up; rubbing at his eyes with his free hand.
"Morning." Athena kept her voice low; hoping to not startle the child.
The eight year old looked up at her and opened his mouth before snapping it closed and bolting to his feet; shuffling away. Athena didn't take another step and crouched down so she was closer to the boy's height.
"Hey, sweetie. It's okay."
"I'm sorry." Evan whispered as he dropped his chin to his chest.
"No, no." Athena shook her head. "It's okay. Did she wake you up last night?"
Evan shook his head in the negative.
"Did you get scared being alone in your room?"
Evan nodded and glanced up at her before dropping his eyes again and shrugging. Athena sighed sadly and reached out her hand towards the boy and didn't try and touch him. This was something she had thought about last night after tucking the child into bed. He was use to being in a room with his sister and now suddenly he was alone. Athena had hoped maybe he would have maybe woken her up but she had a great feeling because of something that happened with his uncle, Evan didn't fully trust adults right now.
"That's okay." Athena smiled. "It is scary to sleep in a new room in a new house. It will take some time but if you feel better sleeping in here then we can bring your mattress in here for tonight, how does that sound?"
Evan sniffed but nodded; finally lifted his head to really look at her. Athena's smile widened and she nodded back at the boy.
"Now seeing as May is still asleep, why don't we go make breakfast?" Athena kept her hand out for him. "Do you like waffles?"
"Waffles are good." Evan smiled and took the step forward to take her hand; following Athena out of the room and towards the kitchen once she stood back up.
They chatted about random things an eight year old thought of while Athena allowed him to stand on a chair at the counter and help her mix the batter and then carefully cut up some strawberries - he had informed her he was allergic to blueberries and kiwis - and Athena put that information away to keep those fruits out of her fridge from now on. May woke just as they were finishing the sausage and bacon; walking herself out to the kitchen to join them, dragging her blanket with her.
