I'm running out of pre-written chapters, so posting will slow down a bit, but I hope to finish this one up soon. Enjoy!
After dinner Anduin returned to his chambers to see Kia sitting quietly by the fire.
The remainder of dinner had been slightly awkward after Kia's outburst, but Anduin couldn't find it in himself to be angry at his wife. He knew what Jaina had done after his father's death had never sat right with Kia and her new emotional state was making it easier for her to share her emotions. The outburst was something he could easily forgive, but it didn't help with his own worrying.
"How are you feeling?" Anduin asked, sitting next to her.
"Oh, I'm fine. I'm a little tired and a bit embarrassed about how I handled the thing with Jaina. I know I have a right to be angry, but I didn't need to air my grievances in public."
Anduin wrapped a supportive arm around Kia's shoulders, scooting in close to her. "Not a single person in that room would blame you for being a little short with Jaina. I can bet some of them probably agree with you."
Kia nodded, leaning into him. "I'm sorry for how I acted anyway. I'm also sorry if I put you in a difficult spot. I don't want you to think that you need to choose between us. I know Jaina is important to you."
"Don't worry about it. You both can be important to me. Did you eat?" Anduin replied, changing the subject.
"Yes. A little argument isn't enough to stop a pregnant woman from eating dinner. Trust me."
They both laughed, then sat in silence for a few moments until a knock at the door pulled them from the moment. Anduin stood and opened the door to find Jaina standing on the other side. She looked worried.
"I was wondering if Kia is willing to see me for a few minutes?" Jaina asked.
"I don't know." Anduin hesitated.
"It's okay, Anduin. I'll speak to her." Kia said from her seat by the fire.
Anduin opened the door fully and allowed Jaina to enter. "Should I stay?" He asked.
Kia laughed. "I think the two of us can talk peacefully without a chaperone, Sweetie." Kia replied.
Anduin looked between the women, unsure, then sighed and left the room.
Jaina crossed the room and sat in a chair by the fire. "I just wanted to…"
Kia put a hand up for her to stop. "Let me start by apologizing for my outburst in the dining hall. Regardless of how I feel, it was the wrong venue for my rant. It seems whatever filter I might have had before I got pregnant is gone now. I tend to say exactly what I want, at the exact moment I'm thinking about it."
"There is nothing to apologize for. You didn't say anything that wasn't true. I did abandon Anduin. He needed someone to support him while he mourned his father and learned how to be a king and all I did was walk out. My own sadness got the best of me that day, but the fact that I've been gone so long only makes it worse. I'm thankful you were here to help hold things together."
"Varian was your friend. And with everything else you've lost over the years, I understand your anger. Don't get me wrong, I'm still mad at you." Kia sighed. "But, Anduin needs you in his life. And I'm not talking about you as a mage or an ally. I'm talking about Aunt Jaina. He needs that woman in this life and so does this baby." She ran a hand over her stomach. "But just remember one thing. Do something like this again to either Anduin or this child…"
Jaina laughed. "...and I'll get to experience, first hand, some of that power you inherited from Malfurion. I understand." Even though she was joking, a part of Jaina was also slightly serious. Anduin had said Kia was a full fledged druid now and even though she herself was one of the most powerful mages in existence, if Kia inherited even a fraction of the power Malfurion held, then Jaina didn't wish to be on the receiving end of any of it.
Kia nodded, but was also smiling. "I think we've come to an agreement, then. Anduin doesn't need tension between us. He has enough on this plate."
"Agreed." Jaina said.
"Well, good. Why don't you grab yourself a cup of tea or a glass of wine. You can tell me exactly what happened during the battle. I'm sure Anduin's rendition was filtered to prevent me from being upset in my 'delicate' condition." Kia put quotes in the air with her fingers around the word delicate.
Jaina laughed, collected a cup of tea for herself, then settled back down in a chair by the fire.
Anduin was almost scared to go back into his chambers. He'd been gone for about an hour and had been told by his guards at the door that Jaina had not left. He entered the room to find Kia and Jaina talking quietly by the fire. Both were smiling while they sipped tea and snacked on cookies.
"I guess this is a good sign." He said tentatively.
"We've talked it out like adults. What did you think would happen? You'd find one of us dead by the door?" Kia said.
Anduin chuckled. "Of course not, although... you are volatile and Jaina would never attack a pregnant woman…"
Kia rolled her eyes. "You just stop. Jaina and I have cleared the air. There is no need for you to worry about either of us. Your baby will have a fully functioning aunt, willing to take on the responsibilities of that role."
"And I understand the consequences if my actions reflect my actions of the past." Jaina added.
Anduin didn't quite know what Jaina meant by consequences, but he decided he was probably happier not knowing. "Well, that's good...I think."
Both women laughed and Anduin couldn't help but smile. It was nice to have his family back together.
