Sorry for the delay on the update. I ran out of pre-written material, so I'm just posting as I go. The final chapters are proving to be a challenge to write the way I like. Enjoy and thanks for reading.
Anduin sat alone in his war room, thankful to have a few moments to himself. His spirits were down and he wasn't sure what he was going to do.
The night elves who had been taking refuge in Stormwind were now on their way to Kalimdor to try to retake their home. He had tried to stop them, asking Tyrande to wait until he had the troops to send along to help, but the moon goddess was angry at the delay and refused to see reason. Genn and many of the guineans had also gone, feeling loyalty to the night elves for sheltering and protecting them for so many years after Sylvanas drove them from their home.
Anduin wanted to help his in-laws, but he simply didn't have the resources to spare. As it was, he'd be sending the last of his regular soldiers to war within the week, leaving only his city guard in Stormwind. This would mean he'd be calling up farmers and miners to fight next. The situation broke his heart and he couldn't seem to think of any way to end the war.
"You're tired. You need to get some rest." Kia said, walking into the room, having the guard close the door behind her, so she could be alone with her husband.
"I know." He replied, turning to face Kia. "But even if I did have time to rest, I don't think my mind would let me. Not now." He stood and took Kia's hands, giving her a sad look. "I'm so sorry."
"For what?" Kia asked, not managing to think of a single thing he had done to warrant an apology.
"For making you stay here, while your parents go off to fight for Kalimdor. I know you'd be with them right now, if you weren't carrying my child." Aundin released Kia's hand and turned away. He just couldn't bear to see the look on Kia's face when he mentioned her parent's departure. She had to hate him for not sending men, forcing the night elves to fight alone.
Kia sighed, stepping around so she was standing in front of Anduin again. "I'm not staying here because I'm pregnant." She placed a hand on the young man's cheek, turning his head so he was looking at her. "I'm here because you're my husband. I love you more than any other. More than I ever thought possible to love another being." She looked down, rubbing her stomach gently. "Though you might not be alone in that category much longer."
She looked back up at him. "But even if I weren't pregnant, I'd still be here, with you. I took a vow the day we got married to stand by your side, regardless of what comes. Hell, I made that vow before we got married. By your side is where I belong. End of conversation. Period. Moving on."
Anduin's heart was pounding when he reached for Kia, pulling her to him and kissing her passionately. For several minutes, the world contained only Anduin and Kia, no others. He pressed his forehead to hers after ending the kiss.
"I love you so much, Kia."
"I love you too, Anduin." Suddenly, Kia felt a sharp kick which caused her to gasp, then chuckle. "I think your son and daughter also loves you."
Anduin placed a hand on Kia's stomach, feeling another kick. He smiled, his troubles momentarily forgotten. "Strong little guy."
"Or girl." Kia added, placing a hand over Anduin's.
Anduin sighed deeply, turning back to his maps. "We need to find a way to end this war, or there will be nothing left for our child to inherit. Or a world for him or her to live in, at all."
Kia moved to stand next to Anduin. "I was just thinking about that. I was thinking about many things, actually. I think I have an idea, but...you are really not going to like it."
Anduin turned to Kia with interest. "I'll listen to any suggestion at this point."
"You still have Saurfang down in the dungeons right?"
Anduin nodded. "Yes."
Kia gave Anduin a worried look. "Most Orcs are honorable people, right? You need to start by talking to him…"
The next morning, Anduin was alone in his throne room when Saurfang's escape was discovered, which meant Kia was gone too.
Anduin could only pray to the Light and any God listening that he had made the right choice.
