A/N: just a cute idea I had with Luz and Hunter :)
Title is from Happy When It Rains by The Jesus and Mary Chain.

The raindrops hitting the window is maybe the homiest sound she has heard.
The noise brings her back to her childhood, a muddy Luz Noceda always having to be dragged inside by her desperate mother. It's especially more than special nowadays, because it's no longer the burning rain from the Boiling Isles. It's the rain that has you cold on the outside but warm inside. It's the rain that brings you happiness instead of sadness.
Luz looks into the foggy above, the gray clouds the only thing she sees. She opens her arms wide like she's in a movie, taking it all in like a walking sponge. She might prefer the Boiling Isles in most aspects, but the rain of her childhood home is way too special to ignore. Besides the fact it doesn't give her third degree burns.
The girl smells the nature, the fresh, wet spring leaves and flowers and nearby frogs. This is one of her most treasured places, where Luz can let it in and let it all out. Where she lives in the moment without a care in the world.
Luz hears and breathes the rain only, smiling like never before. She truly missed this.
The peaceful nature sounds, though, are interrupted by the sudden, emphatic noise of a door opening wide—
"Luz !"
Before the girl can even react, someone rushes right into her and covers her from the rain.
Luz soon realizes…
"Hey, wait! It's okay!" She exclaims, dodging the body protecting her. "It doesn't boil, remember?"
Magenta eyes blink, processing the information, then followed by reddened cheeks.
"… oh."
Luz giggles. "It's kind of cute how much you worry about me."
Hunter, the once Golden Guard, pouts like the teenager he is. "Well, of course I would worry about a reckless human girl going out in the boiling rain."
"Do you really think I would do that?"
Hunter scoffs. "Knowing you…"
Luz rolls her eyes. "Alright, Mr. Golden Bodyguard. Point is," she gestures at her surroundings, "this rain is the good type."
It seems like Hunter only pays attention to the rain now, his frowning eyes softening in surprise. He shyly raises a hand like a child discovering something new.
Luz smiles. "It's pretty nice, huh?"
"Y… Yeah," he nods slowly.
Hunter spends quite a while feeling the rain against his pale, scarred body. The rebellious white hair strand is pretty much glued to his forehead. His t-shirt – correction, Luz's t-shirt – emphasizes his strong arms a little, which… Luz tries not to look at too much. Hunter might be taller and… more built, but at least her clothes are enough for him to sleep over at her house while he's visiting.
Hunter's expression eventually changes from curious and awestruck to… melancholic.
"Sorry," he sighs, "it's still… surreal to me. I mean, being here."
"That's okay. I think no one in the Boiling Isles get used to this so fast. Well, except Eda."
"I'm not talking about the rain only."
Luz raises an eyebrow.
"Uncle- I mean… Belos"— Hunter clears his throat —"used to tell me about this place. He wanted to see it all again. With me." He lowers his gaze. "It's strange being here… without him."
She stares at him sympathetically and takes his pale hand.
"You still miss him, right?" Luz wonders.
Hunter flinches and turns his head away from her.
"Hey, it's okay if you do."
"But he… h-he hurt me. You told me that."
"Well, yeah, nothing erases him hurting you. But emotions are complicated," Luz reassures him, "and it's okay if you miss him. He still raised you, even if badly."
Hunter sighs again and relaxes, his hand squeezing hers.
"Yeah…"
Luz looks up, the rain losing force but still giving her chills.
"Do you like it here?" She asks.
"Of course. It's… beautiful."
When she looks back, he's… staring at her, his eyes bright like stars.
Time for her to blush like a tomato.
"You, um, wanna stay here a little longer?" Luz suggests. "At least before my mom comes to get us out of here?"
Hunter snickers. "That'd be nice."
Smiling, Luz hugs him right there in the rain. The boy stiffens for a moment, but he wraps his arms around her. Maybe a little too tight.
"Hm, someone's a hugger," she mutters.
"Shut up, don't ruin it."
She giggles. "Don't worry. This is nice."
Hunter buries his face in her shoulder. "Mmmph."
Luz relaxes in his chest, patting his back.
"It's okay," she whispers.
He takes a deep breath, letting in and out.
"Okay."
