It was silent for a few minutes, neither one of them knowing what to say.
"You boys going to do something?" Zoë asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, I came to pick G up for the basketball game."
"Ah okay, have fun you two. Don't mind me, I'm just doing some laundry," Zoë replied and she walked off towards the washing machine.
"Shall we go?" Callen asked and he walked out the door, knowing he would probably get the third degree from Sam in the car.
"Yeah we can go," Sam replied as he followed Callen and closed the door behind him. "And you can also tell me what Zoë is doing at your place."
"Yeah." With a sigh Callen got into the car, he knew that this would eventually come up. He just didn't know that Sam would find out like this. With the move he had totally forgotten that he and Sam had plans today.
"So," Sam said as he got in the car as well. "How long has this been going on?"
"Give or take a year."
"A year already?!" Sam spoke astonished. How had his partner kept this a secret for over a year?!
"Yeah, well Zoë and I have been seeing each other for over a year now but she just moved in this weekend."
"Okay, and how come you haven't told me about you two?" Callen looked Sam's way. He knew he would have this conversation eventually, he just didn't think it would be now already. Although it was a bit of a surprise that no one had found out earlier. "Look, I'm happy for you two, but I'm just wondering why you didn't tell me."
"Cus you know…. Hetty for one."
"You really think she doesn't know already?" Sam smirked.
"Right. And you know…. I wanted to keep it out of the office. You know how Hetty is with two co-workers dating each other. I just wanted it to be Zoë and me."
"I can understand that. I know you G. I had a feeling something was going on, all the times you said you didn't wanna hang out. I guess you were with Zoë these times."
"Yes I was."
"That's good. I'm happy for you two. I'm happy that you finally found someone. So I guess all those furniture and decorations are Zoë's?"
"Yes, it's all from her place. But I'm happy to be living with her."
"That's good. I've been telling you for years that you need a girlfriend and now you finally have one and you didn't even need my help," Sam teased.
Callen looked Sam's way and Sam smiled at him and Callen knew he was teasing him. "Anything else you wanna know?" Callen teased back.
"Just don't hurt her okay," Sam spoke sincere.
"I won't Sam. I won't hurt her. I love her, I really love her," Callen admitted to Sam. This was the first time he told someone else how he felt about Zoë but it felt good that Sam knew now.
"That's good. I'm happy for you two."
"Thanks Sam."
A few hours later Callen stepped back into the house.
"Hey Zoë," Callen called into the house.
"Hey G, I'm in the kitchen." Callen walked towards the kitchen. "How was the game?"
"It was good."
"Did you get a lot of questions from Sam?" Zoë spoke with smile, she knew how the partners were.
"Yeah a couple. But he's happy for us."
"That's good. I'm sorry I walked in like that, I didn't know he was here."
"It's okay, I forgot about it too. But it's okay that he knows."
"Really?" Zoë spoke with a smile. "What happened to having me all to yourself?"
Callen walked up to Zoë and put his arms around her waist. "I still can have you all to myself whenever I want," Callen spoke with a smirk.
"Hm-mm."
"Like right now."
Callen moved closer to Zoë and kissed her. Zoë moved her arms around his neck and kissed him back.
"I love you," Callen whispered to her as he released her lips.
"I love you too," Zoë whispered back.
…
Hetty walked out of OPS after being brief by Eric and Nell to get the others.
"Ops center, everyone. Eric has business," Hetty spoke as she walked into the gym.
They all walked out but Hetty stopped Callen.
"Not you, Mr. Callen. For you… a field trip. Camp Pendleton," Hetty told him as she gave him a file.
"Agent assessment?" Callen read from the paper. "But isn't that always done out of Washington?"
"Mm, normally. But you can't climb Mount Everest every day. Have that on my desk by the end of the week. Enjoy the drive."
Callen looked at the others walked off. He wondered what was up that Hetty would send him to Camp Pendleton. The others walked into the OPS center and were surprised to see Granger and Zoë standing there.
"You can start, please, Eric," Hetty spoke as she joined the other.
"Early this morning, police responded to a report of shots fired in this West Hollywood house. There were signs of forced entry. When they entered, this is what they found," Eric spoke as he put some pictures on the screen.
"The living room had been pretty much shot up. A severed finger was found on the floor and used to write this message on the wall," Nell said as she put the last picture up.
Everyone was shocked as they read the message on the wall.
"Where is he?" Sam asked.
"I sent him on assignment to Camp Pendleton. This is strictly a need-to-know operation for which Mr. Callen is not cleared. Understood. Miss Blye, Mr. Deeks, Ms. Moore, work with Nell and Eric. I want to know everything about that house and the people who live there. Sam, crime scene."
"We always work with a partner, Hetty."
"I'll drive," Granger spoke with a smile.
Sam and Granger left and Kensi and Deeks went to work with Eric and Nell.
"Hetty, can I talk to you for a sec? In private?" Zoë asked Hetty.
"Sure."
Hetty followed Zoë to her office and closed to door.
"I already know what you wanna ask and the answer is no," Hetty spoke first.
"You don't think he deserves to know?"
"He deserves to know yes, but working this case right now, it's just something that I can't allow Mr. Callen to do. Once we know more I will talk to Mr. Callen." Hetty could see that Zoë didn't like her answer. "This is need-to-know at this point and Mr. Callen is not to be read in. Is that clear Ms. Moore?"
"Yes, loud and clear."
Hetty left the office. Zoë stood their thinking, there was no way she could keep this from Callen. He deserved to know. She pulled out her phone texted Callen.
Callen was about to get in his car when his phone pinged. He saw he had a text from Zoë.
'Meet me at Starbucks in 5 minutes,' Callen read the text.
Wondering what was going on he got in his car and drove to the Starbucks, which was just around the corner from the office. Callen was already there when Zoë pulled up.
"What's going on?" Callen asked as Zoë walked inside and joined Callen at the table.
"Look, I'm not supposed to tell you this but I can't keep this from you."
"Is it about the case? I knew it. Hetty wouldn't just sent me on this agent assessment like this if something wasn't up," Callen reacted kind of irritated. "What's going on?"
"There was a break in at a house in West Hollywood and there was a message written on in the wall in blood," Zoë said and she hesitantly showed Callen the picture.
Callen took Zoë's phone and looked at the picture. He couldn't believe it as he read the message. "Is this true?"
"We're not sure yet, we're still looking into who lived in the house. But someone clearly thinks it's him."
"I've gotta go there," Callen stood up and wanted to leave.
"G," Zoë stopped him. "Please be careful. We don't know what we're dealing with."
"I will," Callen told her and gave her a kiss. "And thank you for telling me."
"You're welcome."
Callen gave Zoë another kiss before leaving. Zoë sat there for a minute. She knew she had disobeyed Hetty's orders but she couldn't keep this from Callen, she just couldn't. She ordered a coffee and went back to the office.
A little later Hetty came into Zoë's office.
"I just got a call from assistant director Granger saying that Mr. Callen is at the crime scene," Hetty spoke.
"Guess he figured out that something was up."
"Or perhaps someone told him. I thought I was very specific when I said that Mr. Callen was not to be read in."
"I'm not sorry I told him Hetty. I couldn't keep this from him, he deserved to know."
"I can understand why you did what you did. I was just looking out for Mr. Callen until we had more facts."
"Callen should be there for those facts."
"We'll talk more about this when I get back, right now I've gotta get to the crime scene."
Hetty left the office. Zoë watched after her, she had not regretted it for one moment telling Callen about the case. He was her boyfriend, she couldn't keep this from him.
..
"It's appears you got lost on your way to Camp Pendleton, Mr. Callen," Hetty spoke as she entered the bedroom.
"Someone gave me wrong directions."
"Oh yes I know all about that," Hetty answered. Callen looked at her. How had she figured out that Zoë told him? "Is that him?" Hetty asked, pointing to the picture Callen was looking at.
"Ah, could be. He doesn't really look like me. Maybe in the eyes." Callen stepped away and moved to another part of the room. "Anybody find anything to prove it's true?"
"No, not yet. We've been collecting DNA. It'll take a few day to, uh, test against your sample." Callen opened the closet as Hetty kept on talking. "His name is Michael Reinhardt. He immigrated from Germany in, uh, nineteen seventy nine. Bought this place in eighty-one. He was a bookkeeper. Worked mostly for small companies. Mostly, uh, in the garment industry."
"Does that sound like my father to you?"
"Clearly someone believe it's him. You can't take an active role in this investigation, Mr. Callen. I'm going to have to stand you down until things are clearer." But Callen wasn't listening to her. He found a boxed with a lot of pictures in it. "Mr. Callen? Do you recognize someone?" Hetty asked as she saw Callen staring at the photos.
"Me…"
"Which photo?"
"All of them?"
Callen took the box of photos and went back to the office. First thing he did when he was at the office was go up to see Zoë. He walked into Zoë's office and closed the door.
"Hey G, you okay?" Zoë asked.
"I don't know, I don't know what to think."
Zoë sat down on the couch with Callen next to me. "Talk to me."
"I found pictures in a shoebox in his closet, pictures of me as a baby, a kid."
"He kept pictures of you as a kid?"
"Yeah he did. I still don't know if he's my father but who else would keep all these pictures."
"I don't know G. We're still looking. But I know one thing," Zoë said as she grabbed Callen's hand. "We will get through this, together. I'll be with you every step of the way. We will figure out if he's your father or, if not, what he has to do with your past."
"Thank you. Thank you for being here for me and thank you for letting me know."
"Of course."
Callen pulled Zoë towards him and gave her a hug. He was so glad he had her in his life and that she was here for him. Callen released her after a minute or so and kissed her.
"Come on, let's go downstairs to look through the pictures. Maybe we'll find something in there," Zoë said.
"Okay." Callen got up. "Oh yeah, by the way. Hetty's knows you told me."
"I know. She came to talk to me too."
"Were you in a lot of trouble?"
"Just a little, but I wouldn't do it the same all over."
Callen smiled at her before they walked downstairs. Kensi and Deeks were at the bullpen too and helped Callen look through the pictures.
"Los Angeles, two thousands ten. Most recent one yet," Kensi spoke.
Callen looked at the picture and remembered something of when he was at Amy's grave a couple years back.
"The car," Callen remarked.
"What car?" Zoë asked.
"I saw the guy that took this photo. I chased him, he got in a car and he took off. But there was.. there was a man in the backseat. I think it was him."
A little later Eric and Nell came down the stairs and it was a Comescu that was once again after Callen. Eric and Nell briefed the team in the bullpen of what they had find so far.
"How many are there left?" Deeks asked.
"According to intel we've gathered not many," Nell replied.
"Vasile and Dracul escaped. Callen killed Dracul in Hawaii," Zoë added.
"Does Vasile know that Callen killed his brother?" Deeks wondered.
"Yeah, he knows," Eric replied.
"That's why they killed his mother and his grandfather," Zoë explained. "That's the bloodline. If Reinhardt really is Callen's father. He is nothing more than a bargaining chip for what Vasile wants most."
"Callen's head," Deeks finished.
"Eric, find Mr. Callen for me," Hetty spoke as she walked into the bullpen.
"I thought he was with you," Eric said.
"Ah, Mr. Hanna?"
"I didn't see him leave."
"Ms. Moore?"
"I haven't seen him since he left your office."
"Eric…"
"Calling now. His phone's turned off," Eric said.
"GPS?"
"Also turned off."
"His car?"
"No signal."
"Okay. He knows something. He.. he knows someone. Start at his house. Find him. Bring him back here, in handcuffs, if necessary."
"I'm coming with you," Zoë stated. "I can help, if you find Callen. He will listen to me."
"Alright, but you stay close to us. We don't know what we're dealing with," Kensi replied.
"Got it."
Zoë got in the car with Kensi and Deeks. They drove to Callen's house, well actually their house, but Sam was the only one who knew. They pulled up to the house and walked up to the door. Sam and Granger went around back as Kensi, Deeks and Zoë went in through the front door. Zoë could've opened the door with her key but she let Kensi pick the lock. With their guns raised they walked into the house. Zoë stayed behind Kensi. They checked the entire house but Callen wasn't there.
"Since when did Callen get furniture?" Deeks remarked.
"A little while ago," Zoë replied.
"And you know this how?" Kensi wondered.
"Cus we talked about it in one of our sessions and I suggested it to him and he asked me for advise what to pick," Zoë lied, hoping that the others would buy it.
They looked through the house, hoping they would find something that would lead them to Callen. Zoë started in the bedroom, so the others wouldn't find her clothes lying in Callen's closet. Zoë knew that they probably wouldn't find anything here. If Callen was hiding something here she wouldn't definitely noticed it before.
A little later they got a call from Eric. He had heard from Callen. They all went to the scene and Kensi, Deeks and Zoë took Arkady to the boatshed as Sam and Granger stayed behind at the scene to look for clues where Callen had gone to. After talking to Arkady Kensi and Deeks left the interrogation room and contacted Eric and Nell to see if they had found something. Zoë walked into the interrogation room.
"Hello Arkady, I'm Zoë Moore," Zoë spoke as she walked into the interrogation room.
"I know who you are, agent Callen mentioned you."
"Then you know why I'm here. If you have any information where Callen is, please share it with us."
Suddenly the door the interrogation room opened and Hetty stepped in.
"Arkady."
"Henrietta."
"So, what you have got to trade today?"
"I never said I had anything to trade, Henrietta."
"But you always do even when you say you don't."
"What make you think I do?"
"Callen came to see you."
"If I did have something, you shouldn't assume that it would make any difference right now."
"It wouldn't help me find him?"
"No."
"But it might help him find himself?"
"Maybe."
"Then tell us Arkady. Callen deserves to know," Zoë said.
"And what would you want in return?" Hetty asked.
"Perhaps a consideration in the future. When I might need one."
"Go on."
"I know Michael Reinhardt."
They listened to what Arkady had to tell them about Reinhardt. After Arkady had told them everything he knew he left with Hetty.
"I will inform Mr. Callen, Ms. Moore," Hetty spoke before she left.
"That's fine."
Just after Hetty left Kensi and Deeks got a call from where Callen was. Zoë went into the car with Deeks and Kensi. Kensi drove as fast as she could.
"Kensi, explosion between eleventh and twelfth, off San Pedro, back street. We're going in hot," Granger spoke over the phone.
They all had heard the explosion and a little later there was another explosion. Zoë really hoped that Callen was okay. They pulled around the back of the street but there was a fence blocking them.
"Sam sit-rep," Kensi yelled over the coms but there was no answer.
"This way. Come on," Deeks said.
"Stay here," Kensi told Zoë.
Deeks jumped up on the fence as Kensi a used the dumpster to climb over the fence. Deeks was over first and then helped Kensi over. Once Kensi and Deeks were out of sight Zoë climbed over the fence as well. She needed to know what was going on and how Callen was.
"Get down!" Kensi yelled as they came around the corner.
"G!" Sam yelled as he threw Callen a weapon and Callen shot Vasile. "Kensi! Deeks!"
"I'm up!" Kensi and Deeks replied.
"Granger's been hit. Kensi, call it in; Deeks clear the weapons."
Kensi grabbed her phone and called it in as Deeks cleared the weapons. Zoë heard it was safe and she came around the corner. She saw Callen crouched on the ground next to a man lying on the ground.
"Tell him.. the debt is paid," Reinhardt told Callen just before he died.
"G!" Zoë yelled as she ran up to Callen.
The others looked up as they heard Zoë, wondering where she had come from. Zoë ran up to Callen and she could see the tears in his eyes.
"G?" Zoë spoke as she crouched down next to Callen but Callen was still looking at the man lying there. "G," Zoë called again and Callen looked at her.
"Zoë? What are you doing here?"
"I was worried about you. I needed to know if you were okay. Are you okay?"
"I'm okay," Callen replied but he really wasn't.
Relieved that Callen was physically alright was at the moment enough for Zoë, they would deal with the other stuff later. She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly. Not caring about the others right now Callen wrapped his arms around her too. It was good to hold her in his arms right now. The others, except for Sam, looked at them wondering what was going on between Callen and Zoë. A little later the ambulance was there and they loaded Granger and the others who were hurt up. The coroner came by and took the dead bodies. After wrapping up at the scene they went back to the office. Callen grabbed a change of clothes before going to the morgue. He wanted to know what was going on with the man he thought was his father.
"Is Callen okay?" Kensi asked Sam.
"He will be," Sam replied, knowing that Zoë would be there for him.
"I feel bad for him. Finding someone who has a link to your past, only to die before you could get some answers."
"Why don't you all go home, it has been a long day," Hetty spoke as she walked into the bullpen.
"How's Granger?" Sam asked.
"He should be alright."
"And Callen?"
"He should be alright too."
They left for the day just as Zoë came down the stairs as well.
"Goodnight Hetty," Zoë spoke as she walked towards the door.
"Goodnight Ms. Moore," Hetty replied as Zoë walked off. "Oh and Ms. Moore." Zoë turned around to face Hetty. "Take care of Mr. Callen."
Zoë looked confused for a second, wondering what Hetty meant by that but she could see in Hetty's eyes that she knew, that she knew about her and Callen.
