Once upon a time, there were two races. Monsters and humans.
The monsters were a peaceful people, even making friends with a clan of humans who were also treated unkindly by the other humans. But because of the fear from the majority of humans, a war began.
The human clan who had befriended the monsters tried their best to aid the monsters, acting as their spies among the humans, as well as bodyguards and healers. But, because the clan only had a finite amount and the others were many, they were still no match and despite their desperate efforts to protect their friends, were unable to stop the monsters from getting sealed underground.
The clan vowed from then on to one day free the monsters, but to do so, would need the right SOUL traits to mimic those used to seal the monsters away.
The clan tried for many years, but despite their best efforts, they could not produce a child with a Red SOUL. Because of this, the barrier was left sealed and the clan was forced into go into hiding, as over time, it became the norm for humans to not know how to use magic anymore.
Many years later, a young girl named Frisk, managed to fall into the Underground.
She befriended the monsters and tried with all her effort to free them. But... a force outside of her control began to limit the girl's efforts. Leading her in a loop of pain, forcing her to slaughter all the monsters that she so deeply loved...
With the last of her DETERMINATION that she could manage to muster, Frisk removed her SOUL before the king of monsters and held it out to him in offering, pleading him to take it and use it to free everyone.
The king took it reluctantly, but was very sad.
He had wanted so badly for so many years to slay the humans in another war, due to them killing his beloved son, Asriel. But had also been feeling guilt from his efforts as well, having to murder many children to get their SOULs to do so, costing him his wife in the process.
Frisk's good nature and genuine love for the monsters reminded him of his lost daughter as well, who died not long before his son, making his heart melt and the regret festered so deeply that he couldn't bring himself to use the SOUL the sweet girl had so kindly gave up.
The fear that his people would still wish to kill the humans when he himself had changed his mind lead him to turn away any hope of freedom, making Frisk's sacrifice meaningless and causing her best friend, to mourn.
Until one day... a new human fell...
