The next morning I woke up to find that Charlie had already left for work. I quickly threw on a sweatshirt and jeans, not quite used to the freezing weather and grabbed a granola bar. I made sure I had my bracelet on my wrist and I headed off to school.

It wasn't too hard to find and as I pulled into the empty parking lot, I saw I was one of the first ones there. I found the office and was greeted by a woman with bright red hair.

"Hi! Can I help you?" She greeted me enthusiastically.

"I'm Bella Swan. It's my first day."

Her eyes lit up in recognition. "Oh! The new Chief's daughter. I'm Mrs. Cope, the secretary here. I have your schedule around here somewhere…"

While she looked around her desk, I awkwardly shifted my eyes not knowing where to look. I turned towards the office door when my eyes met a pair of bright green ones. We stared at each other for a few seconds before the boy's eyes narrowed at me, a slight scowl on his face before swiftly turning away. I wasn't scared by him in any way. I mean with the things I've seen it'd take a lot to scare me. No, I was just merely confused how a boy I had never met before could seem to express so much disgust and discontent towards me.

"Here it is," I turned back to Mrs. Cope who was holding out a stack of papers. "There is also a map of the school, some general information, and a slip I need you to get all your teachers to sign by the end of the day. Just bring it back to me. Any questions?"

I shook my head, giving her a small smile as she sent me on my way.

Despite how early I had gotten to school, I wasn't able to find my first class until right before the bell rang. I introduced myself to the teacher who pointed out an empty seat next to a friendly looking brunette.

"Omg hi! I'm Jessica," she greeted me as soon as I sat down. She was practically bouncing in her seat but nobody gave her a second glance. I guess that was normal for her.

"Bella," I gave her a polite smile.

"You're like, the most exciting thing to happen in Forks this year! Anyway, sit with me at lunch?"

I could tell she just liked the attention she was getting from talking to me, but considering it was the first class of the day, it wasn't like I had gotten any offers.

"Sure," I told her, turning back to the front. Thank goodness the teacher has started his lesson and I didn't have to listen to her talk anymore.

The rest of the morning passed by fairly quickly. I talked to a couple other people in my classes, but was mostly met with curious stares.

At lunch, Jessica led me to a table near the middle of the room, making introductions as we sat down.

"Bella, this is Mike, Tyler, Eric, Angela, and Lauren. Guys, as you probably already know, this is Bella!" Jessica pulled me down into the seat next to her. Everyone else at the table gave me polite smiles and waves.

Throughout most of lunch I made polite conversation with everyone. Mike slowly started to scoot closer and closer as he talked, causing me to scoot away. Jessica glared at the interaction, giving me a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes when I looked at her.

I was distracted from the conversation when the doors opened and the green eyed boy from earlier walked in. Nobody else seemed to pay him any attention as he stalked through the lunch line before sitting at a table with four other kids.

"Who are they?" I asked Jessica, not wanting to single out just the guy.

Jessica's eyes sparkled as she leant in as if to tell me some huge secret.

"Those are the Cullens and the Hales. The Cullens moved here a couple years ago. They were all adopted by and Mrs. Cullen. They couldn't have kids or something. Emmet, the dark haired one is with Rosalie, the really pretty blonde. Oh, and then Alice, the really tiny one is with Jasper the blonde guy.

"And the other one?" I glanced over at the table to see the green-eyed boy looking right back at me and I quickly shifted my eyes back to Jessica.

"That's Edward," Jessica made a face that looked to be a mix of awe and longing. "And don't waste your time. Apparently none of the girls here are good enough for him or something. Actually, now that I think about it, he doesn't talk to anyone. He barely even talks to his siblings from what I've seen. He's always like scowling at people. We've all learned to just sort of stay away from him."

"Oh." I didn't really know what to say about all the information Jessica gave me. I guess that sort of explained his behavior this morning.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to ask her much else as the lunch bell rang and we had to leave for our next class.

Angela and Mike both had Biology with me and walked me to the classroom, which meant I was actually early for once today.

"Hello, I'm Isabella Swan. It's my first day," I handed the teacher my slip to sign.

"Welcome Ms. Swan. I'm Mr. Banner. I believe the only empty seat is by Mr. Cullen over there," he handed the slip back pointing to a seat near the window.

I thanked him and quickly took my seat, wondering which of the Cullens I would get to meet.

I didn't have to wait long to find out as Edward strode into the classroom, heading right for our table. A look of surprise flashed in his eyes before settling again to the same stony cold expression as earlier.

"Hello, I'm Bella," I shot him a small smile, and his mouth turned down into a frown before he looked away out the window.

I furrowed my brows, wondering what his problem was. I mean Jessica said he didn't really interact with anyone but I didn't think she was that serious.

Thank goodness Mr. Banner started class, as he went over the phases of cell mitosis. I had already learned everything at my previous school so it allowed me some time to think.

Charlie had said this town was relatively safe but I still had that urge to do something. I didn't want to waste my powers when they could be of so much use to so many other people.

"Now with your table partners, identify the stages of mitosis on the slides," Mr. Banner's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

I looked up and over to see Edward had already started, and was looking into the microscope. For once, he didn't have the scowl on his face as he observed the slide, looking much younger and more boyish.

"Prophase."

My eyes snapped up to see Edward's intense green eyes looking at me expectantly, the cold look back on his face.

"May I?" I reached over, pulling the microscope over to me. I quickly looked through the lens to see that he was right.

"Prophase," I confirmed.

"Like I said," I could hear a slight annoyance in his voice.

Ignoring him, I grabbed the next slide, pushing it under the lens.

"Anaphase," I concluded.

"May I?" Edward tentatively reached his hand out as I pushed the microscope towards him.

"Anaphase," he grumbled.

"Like I said," I repeated his words with a smile, earning me a scowl.

We finished in no time, way ahead of the other students when Mr. Banner came over to check on us.

"Mr. Cullen, did you leave any work for Isabella?" He asked.

"It's Bella," Edward automatically corrected him. I couldn't hide the surprise on my face. "And she completed three out of the five."

"Have you done this lab before?" Mr. Banner turned to me.

I nodded. "I was in advanced placement in Phoenix. But not with onion root."

"Whitefish blastula?"

"Yes."

"Very well," Mr. Banner nodded. "Then I suppose it's good you two are partners," he told us before moving on to the table behind us."

I was just about to pull out a book to read when Edward spoke directly to me for the first time.

"You're from Phoenix?" He seemed surprised by his own question, as if he hadn't meant to talk to me. His face immediately settled into a half-glare, but I answered his question anyway.

"Yes."

"Why did you move here?"

I contemplated lying, but I decided to go with the edited truth. "My mother died, and my dad got a new job." I kept it simple, too many details and I might slip up.

"I'm sorry," he looked down, running a hand through his hair.

I didn't really know what to say so I just gave him a smile and a nod.

But before I could ask him anything, the bell rang. He quickly stood up, not even giving me a second glance before bolting out of the classroom.

I sighed, disappointed that that was the end of our civil conversation and grudgingly headed to gym.
