Gym was probably the worst class for me, not only because I was, ironically, one of the clumsiest people ever, but I also had to be really careful how much I exert myself physically. One wrong move and I could accidentally fry someone's hair off with heat vision or throw a basketball through the wall. And I couldn't expose myself in any way.
Luckily I got to sit out for the first day so I didn't have to worry about accidentally killing someone.
After school, I turned in my slip to the office, and right as I turned around to leave, I bumped right into someone.
I was about to apologize, crossing my fingers I didn't hurt them, when I looked up to meet a familiar pair of green eyes. Cold, green eyes.
"I-I'm sorry! Are you okay?" I asked him. Just because I was virtually indestructible, didn't mean he was.
Edward furrowed his brows, a confused look on his face. "Are you?" He looked genuinely concerned.
But that look faded the second I nodded, turning back into the scowl I had grown used to throughout the day.
Before I could apologize again, Edward moved past me down the hallway, leaving me to watch.
I tried to shake that interaction out of my head but I couldn't help thinking about it on my way home. Why was Edward so hostile towards everyone?
Just as I pulled into the driveway, I heard the landline ringing. I unlocked my door, rushing to the phone, holding it up to my ear.
"Hello?"
"Bells?" Charlie.
"Hi dad, what's wrong?" Charlie didn't usually call while he was at work.
"Bella," he sounded stressed...or panicked...or both?
"The pier near the lumber yard caught on fire. The firefighters...they're trying to stop it but there's only a couple of them and the fire's growing too fast. I know I didn't want you anywhere near this, especially this early. But… Th-the civilians at the reservation…"
I knew what he was asking.
"On it dad," I told him, confident and a little excited to finally start using my powers. "Be there in a couple minutes."
I stepped out of my house, running into the woods far enough that nobody would spot me changing. I pressed down on the blue stone on my bracelet, feeling my outfit change.
I looked down at my "superhero" outfit that had been specifically designed to fit my body and allowed for optimal movement. The top was sleeveless and royal blue, the sides flaring out at my waist. The bottom half looked very much like leggings, but much more comfortable. They were black, with silver bands around the thighs and just above the knee in case I ever needed to carry anything. My black boots stopped a little below the knee, and my blue, elbow length "gloves" were cuffed at the wrist. My outfit was complete with my domino mask, blue with black accents around the edges, my brown hair left flowing down.
As soon as I had transformed, I took off, flying up and over the trees. I saw the smoke on the other side of town and sped towards it, landing near the police and firefighters who were attempting to fight the growing fire with a single hose.
"We need to contain it!" Charlie told me.
"I got this," I reassured him.
I flew over the fire, using my freeze breath to keep the fire from spreading, but it was proving to be more difficult than I thought. As soon as I settled down one end of the fire, the other side would grow larger. At this rate, I could keep the fire contained but I didn't know if I could fully stop it.
"I'll speed around it to contain it. You freeze it."
I jumped in shock as a voice yelled at me from down below. Looking down, I saw another superhero. A guy...I think...dressed in all black, including his mask.
I stared at him, my body still in shock from seeing another supe.
He smirked at me. "Look, I get that I'm hot and all, but we have bigger things to worry about here."
That snapped me out of it. As soon as he saw I was focused, he took off, running around the perimeter of the fire. It kept the fire in place so that I could use my freeze breath to easily stop the fire. With the two of us working together it only took a couple of minutes.
The police and firefighters watched in awe as we finished containing the fire and both stopped in front of them.
"Looks like our job here is done," the guy gave me a cheeky grin.
"Thank you both," Charlie told us. He gave me a pointed look that meant we would talk more when he got home. He gathered the police and firefighters and ordered them all to head home or back to the stations, leaving me along with the guy.
"We did awesome! I mean I was like zoom! And you were like whoosh!" The guy held up his hand for a high five.
I turned to get a good look at him for the first time. Obviously I didn't know what he really looked like since he had his outfit and mask on but I could still see his bronze hair sticking out in a disarray and his eyes that looked so familiar but I just quite couldn't place.
"Don't leave me hanging," he pouted.
I rolled my eyes, lightly giving him a high five.
And then it happened.
Just as our palms touched, there was a bright flash between us, and it felt like I had been electrocuted. Not in a bad way or anything, in fact it felt like a good electrical current ran through my body.
"Woah. What was that?" The guy asked me.
"We're partners," I said, mostly to myself, as I reached the realization that that flash is what Charlie and Renee were talking about.
"Wait, what?" The guy looked at me, confused.
"That flash," I explained, "means we're perfectly genetically compatible."
"Basically it means that we are the perfect superhero team. We compliment each other," I clarified.
"Do we now?" The guy wiggled his brows. Or at least I'm pretty sure he did. It was hard to tell with his mask on.
"Power wise," I reminded him.
"Right. Power wise." He continued to stare at me.
"Well, uh, I should go…" I started to back away, getting ready to fly away.
"Wait!" He reached out to grab my wrist. This time, I felt another spark, but it was a different kind of spark.
"Shouldn't we, you know, keep in touch or something? Since we're supposed to be partners and all. And I don't even know your name," he pointed out.
"I'm not really sure how this whole partner thing works but we should still keep our identities a secret. It's a safety thing. As for the whole keeping in touch thing, I'm just going to assume if danger is near, we'll both be there."
"Sounds reasonable," he nodded. He gave me a once over, and then sped off into the woods.
