I felt pain in my body as I laid on the cool wet moss on the ground. I tried to open my eyes but my head hurt so much that they wouldn't.
"Bella!" I heard a velvet voice cut through the pain. "Please be okay. Wake up!"
I felt them lift me off the ground. I tried to move around to get whoever it was to put me down.
"Bella? Bella, can you hear me?" I heard the voice ask.
I groaned, not being able to form words.
"That's good," he told me. Was it?
"Do you think you can open your eyes for me, beautiful?"
I tried, I really did. But just as I opened them the tiniest bit, searing pain rushed through my head, causing me to whimper.
I turned my head against the chest of whoever was holding me, in an attempt to block out the light.
"Hey, it's okay, beautiful. You can keep your eyes closed. We're almost there."
I felt the wind rushing around me for a minute or so before slowing down.
I didn't notice I was already inside the house until I felt my soft bed under me.
I heard the phone ring and it again made my headache worse.
"Please make it stop," I whispered, holding both sides of my head.
"I'll be right back," I heard before my door closed.
Even from up here, I could hear the conversation downstairs.
"Hello?" I heard the velvet voice answering the phone.
"Bella? Uh, who is this?" I heard another male voice. Charlie?
"It's um, Dark Knight, sir. Bella was in an accident. She was hurt during a fight today and I brought her back here," he explained.
I felt a wave of relief as I realized it was Knight who was here with me, not some random stranger.
"Is she okay? How bad is it?" Charlie sounded panicked.
"She's going to be fine, sir. She may have a concussion, and her arm is either badly sprained or slightly fractured, but with her superhero healing it should be better in a week or so, and the concussion should be gone by morning," Knight sounded confident.
Charlie sounded conflicted as he said this next part. "I really want to be there to make sure she's okay, but we have to sweep the school and it's going to take all night."
"I can take care of her, sir," Knight immediately offered.
"Are you sure?" Charlie asked. "I'm sure you have to go home, or whatever you do."
"I can stay with her until you get back," he assured her, leaving no room for argument.
There was a silence in the conversation before Charlie started talking again.
"Alright," he agreed. "When she wakes up, tell her I'll be back as soon as I can. I owe you kid," he thanked Knight.
"You don't owe me anything," Knight told him before hanging up.
I heard him dial another number, waiting for whoever he called to pick up.
"Mom?"
Unfortunately I couldn't hear the other end of the conversation, since whoever was on the other end spoke in a much softer voice than Charlie.
"Yes, I'm fine. I wasn't even at school when it happened," he told the person on the other end, who I assumed was his mom.
"A friend felt sick so I took them home...Yes, I have friends mom!" Knight defended himself. I would have laughed if it didn't hurt to do so.
"I promised her dad I'd stay with her until he got home...Yes, she's a girl...No, mom!...I'm hanging up now!" Knight sounded flustered.
"Love you too," he hung up.
Hearing Knight talk to his mom only made me more curious as to who he was. After all, he now knew my real identity.
I put my hand next to me, attempting to push myself up. I let out a cry as a sharp pain shot through my wrist.
I immediately heard steps pounding up the stairs, throwing open my door.
"Bella?" Knight asked, worried.
"My wrist," I told him, trying to open my eyes to look at him, only I forgot about my headache.
"Ah! My head," I brought my hand up to hold my hand, shutting my eyes again. But of course it was my bad hand.
"My wrist!"
I heard snickering from the doorway, and I turned my head up, my eyes still closed, to growl at Knight.
"If you're just going to laugh, you can leave," I told him. I wasn't really mad at him, but the pain wasn't helping my mood.
"I'm sorry," Knight chuckled. "You're like an angry kitten."
I growled at him again, but he had already made his way next to me. He placed his hands on my shoulders, gently pushing me back down onto my bed.
"Lay down. I think you have a concussion and your wrist is definitely messed up. It could be broken but it should heal completely in a couple of days so I'm just going to wrap it tight. Do you have a brace or anything?"
"Bathroom, top right cabinet," I told him.
"What the heck!" I heard Knight's surprised voice from the bathroom. "There's more supplies in here than at the hospital!"
"I'm really clumsy," I explained.
It took Knight a couple more minutes to come back into my room. I felt something really cool touch my forehead.
"That feels nice," I smiled.
"The compress should help with your headache. And your concussion should be gone in another hour or so, so we just need to keep you awake until then," Knight took my wrist into his hand as if it was the most fragile thing in the world.
"Tell me if I'm hurting you, okay?" He told me.
I nodded.
Knight wrapped my wrist and I winced as he pulled the bandage tight to keep it from moving.
"I'm fine," I assured him when he hesitated.
He finished up, placing my hand in the brace, before placing it back on my bed.
Already feeling infinitely better, I slowly opened my eyes, to find the room was completely dark.
I looked around, locking eyes with Knight, who had a soft smile on his face.
"There you are, beautiful."
"Thanks for carrying me back. You really don't have to stay here until Charlie gets back," I told him.
"I don't mind," Knight sat down on the bed next to me. "Besides, I should be the one thanking you. You're the one who risked your life for the sake of everyone else. Quite stupidly, I might add," he looked almost angry.
"Like you would have done any different," I pointed out. Knight looked like he wanted to argue but he knew I was right. "Besides, I knew I wasn't going to get hurt."
He raised a brow, looking at my wrist. "Yeah, you made it out without a scratch."
I slapped his arm with my good hand. "Shut it."
This seemed to bring Knight back into a good mood.
"Can I ask you something?" I looked at him. He nodded.
"How did you know my name?"
"What?"
"When I ran into you at the gym. You knew my name was Bella you-" I stopped, coming to a sudden realization.
"We go to school together, don't we?" I asked.
Knight didn't say anything but that was confirmation enough for me. But I decided to let it go for now.
I looked down at my outfit, realizing I was still wearing my superhero suit.
"Um, do you mind?" I pointed to my bracelet.
"N-no?" Knight stared at my bracelet. He didn't take his eyes off of it as I pressed the button, transforming me back to the clothes I had been wearing at school.
"Where's yours?" I asked, taking his attention off my bracelet.
Knight looked up and jumped, as if he hadn't been expecting me to look the way I did.
"Huh?"
"Your transformation thingy." I wasn't really sure what they were called.
"Oh!" His eyes lit up in realization, He reached around his neck and pulled a silver chain with a dog tag on the end from under his top. I saw a small button on the middle of the tag.
"Am I going to get to know who you are?" I asked him.
"You know me," Knight looked nervous.
"You know what I mean," I eyed the dog tag.
He ran his hand through his hair with a sigh. Where have I seen that before?
"Soon," he promised.
"And why not now?" I crossed my arms.
"When the two villains were talking to us earlier, you seemed a little off," Knight changed the subject.
I could have been stubborn like I usually was and insisted he answer my question but I decided to let it go instead. After all, he is spending his night taking care of me.
"You know how they were talking about a superhero duo that stopped them last time? And only one of them made it out?" Knight nodded.
"The one that made it out," I looked at him. "Was Charlie."
"Wait, but that means…" Knight trailed off.
"My mom," I confirmed, a lone tear slipping out. I hadn't really cried since she died, feeling like I needed to be there for Charlie. But for some reason with Knight, I felt safe and taken care of.
I felt Knight's gloved hand wipe the tear off my face.
I looked up at him and he gave me a comforting smile. I appreciated that he didn't say anything, letting me simply take comfort in his presence.
I leaned my head against his shoulder, feeling the exhaustion from the day finally take over.
"Sleep, Beauty," Knight placed a soft kiss on my forehead as the darkness took over.
