Andrea looked around at her condo, feeling overwhelmed at just how much there was left to do. She hadn't meant to leave this much packing until the end of her time in her home, but a part of her had found it so difficult to find the energy to move. She knew that it had to happen, as she had no job left in Los Angeles, and one waiting for her in Vermont, but there was still the fact that she was leaving Sharon behind that made everything so hard to let go.
Letting out a sigh, she started to finish up what was left in the kitchen, only to be interrupted by someone knocking on her door. Frowning, Andrea made her way to it, looking out through the peep hole to see Provenza and Patrice standing there. A sad smile turned up the corners of her lips as she unlocked the door and let them inside. "What brings you two by here?" she asked, taking in the bag of takeout Chinese in Provenza's hands.
"A little bird named Andy said that this was your last weekend here, and Patrice thought that you might like a hand with the last minute details. It looks like she was right, as you have a shit ton of packing left to do."
Andrea chuckled as she rolled her eyes at Provenza's words, knowing that he meant them affectionately. "I may be a bit overwhelmed, yes. All the furniture is staying here, as I sold it to the people who are purchasing my condo, but there's still so much stuff that has to go in boxes and into the trailer. I just hope that I bought a large enough one."
Patrice laughed as she nodded, gesturing for Provenza to put the food on the table. "We always seem to acquire more stuff than we need over the years and don't realise just how much it is until we have to move. Now, let's eat before we get down to work. Don't worry, everything is disposable, and we'll take care of the trash when we leave."
"Thanks," she murmured as Patrice began to lay out the food and utensils. Taking a seat at the table, Andrea began to dish out the food that was offered, and she dug in hungrily, realizing that she would have had to take a break for lunch soon, anyway, and now she had two extra sets of hands to help her get everything in order. "So, I just have here, the living room, and my bedroom to finish packing. I left the worst rooms for last, because I knew that they would take me the longest."
"We'll have Louie clean up and pack in here while we tackle your bedroom. Somehow, I have the feeling that you don't want him in that particular room."
Andrea nodded as she ate, happily handing over control to Patrice, since it allowed her to woolgather, thinking about her home in Vermont. It was going to be a long drive, and she hoped that it would go smoothly, since she didn't relish being between homes and having to deal with a breakdown. Suddenly, Provenza was snapping his fingers in her face, and she shook her head as she looked up at him, a guilty look on her face as she smiled. "Sorry, I just have a lot on my mind."
"I can imagine. After all, you left us in a lurch with that she-devil that's the newest ADA, and are traipsing across the country to start a new life because you couldn't hack it here. Everyone grieves, Andrea. Not everyone up and starts over new when the going gets tough."
She let out a mirthless laugh as she continued to eat. "Well, some of us can't deal with the fact that Rusty is going to be getting away with things that she's prosecuted other people for, and needed to find a way to assuage her guilt over what happened. Nobody who stands for truth would have done what I did, and it would just be better for us all if I was no longer here. If there's distance between us all, we can all thrive, and I can bury that guilt in the past."
Provenza nodded a little, pushing aside his finished plate before getting to his feet and washing his hands at the sink. "I suppose that you have to do what will keep you alive and sane. I'm going to start getting the stuff in here packed away, you two continue eating and I'll just work around you."
Andrea gave him a quick smile before finishing off her food, keeping up a conversation with Patrice as she tried not to wince and flinch at the rougher way that Provenza handled her belongings, knowing that he wasn't trying to break anything, he just had a different style than she did. Soon enough, she was finished eating, and she threw away her plate and utensils before guiding Patrice into her bedroom. "I'm sorry that it's such a mess in here. I was trying to find an outfit for tomorrow, plus pack a bag of outfits for the drive, and everything just got to be too much."
"So you left it for the kitchen?" She nodded sheepishly. "It happens to us all, Andrea. So, where are you headed?"
"Across the country, literally. Though it will be nice to be around the area I grew up in, since I haven't been back there in ages. I need some time to settle in before I let others know my location, since I don't want surprise visitors."
Patrice nodded as she started to pack away the contents of the dresser. "I understand, I just had to try.
"I figured as much," Andrea replied as she finished packing the bag she was going to use while she was driving from hotel to hotel on her way home. Once that task was completed, she taped the boxes that Patrice had finished before starting to run them down to the trailer, packing them carefully alongside the boxes that Provenza had also added to the mix. "You got a lot done."
"Yeah, well, when you don't have to worry about the sentiments of the actions, it goes a lot faster. If I had to guess, you were having sentimental thoughts about your favorite spoons as you shoved them into Ziploc bags."
Andrea let out a bark of laughter as they went back into the house. "It wasn't that bad, but I do have a favorite spoon for ice cream."
"Why does that not surprise me?" he muttered. "Look, your kitchen is officially empty, so I'm going to start on the living room. You and Patrice can join me when you finally finish that bedroom of yours."
"Sounds like a solid plan," she responded as they went their separate ways. Patrice had managed to make a bit more headway in her absence, and Andrea found herself carrying down three more boxes to the trailer before meeting Patrice on the way back as she carried another box out. "I can get those!"
"Oh, honey, these are just clothes, and it's not that heavy. You and Louie can do the heavy lifting in the living room. There are just two more boxes after this from your bedroom, so I'll let you grab those while I start to help my husband."
"Thank you, truly, both of you. I would never have been able to get this done without your help." Patrice gave her a small nod as she reached out and patted Andrea's shoulder lightly before they went on with what they were doing. Suddenly, Andrea didn't mind leaving this place so much, knowing that she would always have good friends who were willing to help her waiting if she should ever want to return home.
