14. Birthday Disaster
I awoke to the sun streaming through my window. I got up, stretched and got my toiletries together for a shower. As I was walking toward the bathroom I glanced at the calender. September 13th. It's BellaBear's big 18th. She can legally buy a pack of smokes. I shook my head as I walked into the bathroom for my morning routine.
'I have a feeling Alice is going to go overboard with this "surprise" birthday party.'
As I was walking out of the bathroom Bella rushed in. She was staring at herself in the mirror.
'She's obessessing over her aging. She acting like she'll immediately start showing signs of aging right at 18.'
"Bella, what's up? Why are you staring so hard at your reflection?"
She turned around and started chewing on her bottom lip. She hesitated.
"Come on, talk to me."
She sighed then told me about her dream where she thought she saw her dead grandma and Edward in their meadow while the sun was blazing. She was worried about how her grandma would react to her boyfriend who sparkles like a disco ball. Once she reached her grandma she realized that it really wasn't her grandma. It was her reflection. She was the elderly lady and Edward was forever 17.
She had those worry creases in her forehead.
"Bella, calm down. its only one year physically. He's like 100 mentally. You won't start aging until probably your late 30's. You are making a big deal over nothing."
Bella smoothed out her face. I quickly got dressed and headed downstairs for breakfast. Bella came racing down the stairs trying to avoid Charlie.
'I'm surprised she didn't trip over her own feet in her hurry to avoid Charlie.'
"Happy Birthday Bells" Charlie said cheerfully whilst handing her two gifts.
She had to spend time with Charlie and pretend to be happy that she's 18 now. It was painful and awkward as hell to watch. Although the photo album and digital camera were a really nice gesture. I decided to have mercy on her.
"Charlie, we have to go. Bella's driving the beast so you know its going to take us a while to get to school."
"Alright, have a good day girls." he replied
She looked at me with eternal gratefulness.
She was preoccupied the entire drive to school which suited me just fine. I really don't want to hear her complain today.
'It seems like everything I said went in one ear and out the other ear.'
She pulled into the parking lot of Forks High School. I followed her line of vision and spotted Edward. I internally rolled my eyes. Somehow Eddie sweet talked the administrators into changing his schedule to match Bella's so now they have all the same classes. She spends all her time with Edward in and out of school.
'That isn't healthy.' I shook my head at my thoughts.
I got out of the truck and waved to Alice and Edward before walking into the school to find Chelsea and Tiffany. I saw Angela and Ben and waved to them.
'They're so adorable together'
"Penny"
I turned around and Alice was walking toward me with Edward and Bella bringing up the rear.
"What's up Ali?"
"You're coming over after school to help decorate, right?" She asked
"Uh, sure."
"Great. I'll wait for you after school." She replied. She floated away leaving me standing there.
'What...What did I just sign up for?' I shook my head and continued on my mission to find Chelsea and Tiffany
As usual I found them near the vending machines. They haven't noticed me yet. I crept up to the side of the machines.
"PUT DOWN THE POP TART AND STEP AWAY FROM THE MACHINE"
Chels literally dropped her pop tart and jumped in the air. Tiffany looked like a deer in headlights with that sour punch straw hanging from her lips. Chels turned around and tried to swing at me.
"Penny. Do. Not. Do. That." Chels said
I doubled over laughing.
"OMG! You should've seen your faces. Tiffany over hear looking like a deer in headlights." I struggled to catch my breath.
"That's not funny, Rosas!" Tiffany said
"Then why am I laughing?"
They left me laughing on the floor and stomped off to class.
~~Forks High Student Lot~~
"Penny you want to go to Port Angeles?" Chels asked
"I can't. I promise Alice I'd help her decorate her house for Bella's surprise birthday party."
"Oh, that's right. It's Bella's birthday today. Are we invited?" Tiffany asked
"Yea, we've never been to the elusive Cullen house." Chels said
"I don't think so. This party is for Bella from the Cullen's. I'm only roped into going is because Bella is my friend and I am dating Emmeett."
"So you're saying we have to be dating a Cullen just to get invited?" TIff asked
"No, it just that...Bella hates celebrating her birthday for some odd ass reason and the fewer people who know about it the better in her mind. This "surprise" party is Edward and Alice's idea. Bella would rather just forget that she even has a birthday."
"That's just weird...Who hates their birthday? It's an entire day for you." Chelsea pondered.
"Right!? Bella is crazy to hate her birthday. She's 18 now. Why the hell is she upset about that?" Tiffany replied
"She didn't really start hating her birthday until she moved here. I honestly can't fathom why." I answered
'I know why. I just can't tell anybody.'
Hey?! Didn't that Jacob kid from the reservation come to the school?" Chels asked
"Did he? I didn't see him." I said looking around
"That's the rumor going around the school. People are wondering what he's being fed. He doesn't look his age." Tiff replied
"There's also a betting pool about who would win in a fight between Jacob and Edward." Chels added.
'Smh...If they only knew...'
"I don't know." I shrugged
I seen Alice waitng for me in Edward's Volvo. I turned and hugged Tiffany and Chelsea.
"There's my ride. I'll see y'all tomorrow. I'll tell you all about the exquiste and elaborate decorations and what not."
"Bye Girlie." Chels said
"Yea, see you later." Tiffany replied
I walked over to the Volvo and got in. Alice sped off as soon as I closed the door.
"Damn it Ali, can I at least put my seatbelt on first."
She just laughed.
"I take it Eddie and the birthday girl are coming later in her tank."
"Yes, Edward is going to keep her occupied by them watching Romeo and Juliet." Ali said
"I swear, I don't really see the appeal in Romeo and Juliet. It's protrayed as a love story but it's not. It's a tragedy. Two some what innocent lives snuffed out because why? Their parents beefing with each other like rival gangs and didn't approve of the relationship. Cue the teenaged angst."
Alice just giggled and sped up. We reached the Cullen house 20 minutes later. Emmett came out and opened my door whilst Jasper opened Ali's door.
"Hey babe, How was school?" Emm asked pecking me on my lips
"Very boring."
"Penny, you and Emmett can hang the Japanese laterns and line the stairs with the bowls of water and pink roses on each side. Once you're done you can come inside and I'll put you on a different task."
I simply nodded 'Bella is going to hate this so much.'
Emmett and I set off to work and finished an hour later. We came inside and Alice had transformed the living room into an explosion of pink theme were pink candles everywhere and dozens more of those crystal glass bowls with water and roses in them. A white clothed table with all the presents for Bella and on Edward's piano was a pink birthday cake with a stack of glass plates and more roses.
"You know ya'll can still back out now before Bella gets here."
"Why would we do that, Penny?" Esme asked
"I can honestly tell you Bella is going to be mortified. She never liked a huge fuss being made about her. Renee and I would just take her out to eat and that was that. Honestly, she didn't really start hating her birthday until she found out that you all are vampires who don't age and that Edward will remain 17 forever. Even though he's like 1000 years old."
"Edward is 104, Penny." Carlisle
"Yea, I'm aware of how old he actually is and I don't care. I said 1000 because he acts like a 1000 year old grumpy prude." I replied deadpanned.
Rose, Bash, Emmett and Jasper laughed.
"Penny, it's only fair we did it for you." Esme said
"Yes, but I like celebrating my birthday. An entire day dedicated to me. I love being the center of attention. She doesn't. It's amazing that ya'll are doing this but I can't help but feel that this will end badly."
They stayed silent. We had time to kill until the not birthday girl showed up.
'I wonder how far Ali got into her research about Emm family?'
I was just about to ask her when she glided over with a manila envelope in her hands.
"Emmett, This is all the information I dug up on what's left of your family." She handed the envelope to Emmett and walked back over to Jasper.
Emmett just stared at it.
"Babe, baby are you okay?"
He looked up at me with his golden eyes.
"In this envelope is all the information on what's left of the McCarty family."
"Do you want to open it now?"
He just contined to stare at it. I grabbed his free hand and pulled him out of the living room and walked down into his room. I sat him on the bed and as I closed the door.
I whispered, "Bash, I'm sure in time Emmett will share with the rest of the family, but would you mind silencing the room. Please. Just come get us when it's time."
I didn't wait for an answer. I went over and sat next to Emmett. I was about to say something when Emm spoke up.
"It's hard for me to feel anything. That part of my life was so long ago. I've accepted that I'll never see them again. Although a small part of me always wondered what happened to everyone after I left that bag of money."
"Well, babe now you can see."
He used his pinky nail to slice open the envelope and he pulled out the documents.

"I didn't know your birthday was in July. You're a Cancer, babe."
"I guess I was. My brother Charlie named his first born son after me. I vaguely remember us going to celebrate him getting married. I have a bunch of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. All my siblings are gone."
He handed me the papers. I scanned them and noticed that Alice managed to find their addresses as well. It would seem that the McCarty's stayed close to home. The furthest anyone went was to New York. Which is where 3 of his nieces live.
I sat the papers on his bed and I hugged him. He gently hugged me back. We sat there discussing which of his nieces and nephews we'd visit first next summer and the "backstory" we'd come up with if any of them had an old photo of Emmett. We decided to visit his youngest nephew first. Samson.
"I know this is going to be an emotional rollarcoaster for you babe. Just know that I'll be there with you every step of the way."
"I know, and I truly do appreciate that babe. I love you." Emm replied
"I love you as well."
Bash came and knocked on the door.
"Zip up you two, the birthday girl is on her way." Bash said
"Oh, ha ha Bash. We weren't doing anything."
I opened the door and he was smirking.
"Yea, keep smirking. Remember I still have that bet to cash in on buddy boy."
He went paler than he normally is and sped away. We walked into the living room and joined the rest of the family in waiting.
"Final offer to back out now."
"We're not backing out Penny." Alice said
"Alrighttty then." I sent a silent prayer up above that eveything would go smoothly and nothing would go wrong. I turned to Rose
"Rose, how was it visiting your family?"
"It was amazing. Your idea to pretend to be my own granddaughter worked." She replied happily
"Ohhh, I so happy for you." I can feel the happiness radiating off of her.
"My younger brothers Michael and Connor had three kids each. Michael had 2 girls and a son and Connor had 3 boys. Each of my nieces and nephews had two children each. Except Connor's youngest son. He had 6 children. 3 boys and 3 girls. I have 16 grandnieces and nephews."
"That's amazing! What story did you come up with after telling them your "grandmother" was found by a doctor."
"I told them nana Rosalie thought that since the King family was well known and no one would've believed her; she decided to fake her death and move away with the doctor who found her and his family. They bought it."
"That's wonderful Rose, really."
She beamed at me.
We heard shitty shitty bang bang coming up the driveway.
"Alright, places everyone." Ali chirped
Bella and Edward walked into the living room together
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY BELLA!"
I pressed the air horn. She just looked around mortified.
'I was right. She's mortified'
Carlisle and Esme each hugged her and I heard Carlisle whisper an apology to Bella about not being able to rein Alice in. I snorted at that. Rosalie and Sebastian were the next to greet her. After them was Emmett's turn.
"You haven't changed at all," Emmett said with mock disappointment. "I expected a perceptible difference, but here you are just as awkward and red-faced as ever."
"Thanks a lot, Emmett." She replied blushing fifty shades of red.
He laughed and replied, "I have to step out for a second,"- Pausing to wink at Alice suspiciously. "Don't do anything funny while I'm gone." He kissed me then left the room.
"I'll try." Bella replied
I looked at Alice with a questioning look. She just shrugged and mouthed "You'll see."
Alice skipped forward smiling brightly whilst Jasper held back a little.
'Hmmm...he's still not use to her blood. I thought spending time in a hotel room would help him. I guess not.'
"Time to open presents." Alice said. She grabbed Bella by her elbow and steered her to the table with the cake and gifts.
Bella pulled out her best martyr face "Alice, I know I told you I didn't want anything-"
"Told you so." I said interrupting Bella
"Yea, Yea but I didn't listen, now suck it up missy." Alice replied. She removed the camera from Bella's hands and put a silver wrapped box into them. The tag said it was from Emm, Rosie and Jazz
I watched her open it. It was the box of the stereo for the tank.
"Ummm...Thanks"
Rosalie cracked a smile and Jasper laughed. "It's a stereo for your truck," He explained. "Emmett's installing it right now so you can't return it."
I shook my head. I remember Bella telling me Edward would complain about the radio not working properly in her truck.
"Thanks, Jasper, Rosalie." She replied
"THANKS EMMETT." She shouted
All you heard was his booming laughter coming from outside. Bella laughed a little too.
"Open mine and Edward's next," Alice said excitedly. She held a small, flat square in her hands.
Bella turned and gave Eddie a glare that could kill. "You promised" she muttered
Emmett raced back in before he could answer. "Just in time" He said
He pushed in behind Jasper, who also drifted a little closer than usual to get a good look. I moved to stand next to Esme.
"I didn't spend a dime," Edward assured Bella. He brused a loose strand of hair away from her face.
Bella took a deep breath and turned to Alice. "Give it to me."
Emmett chuckled with delight. I just shook my head. Bella rolled her eyes at Edward and proceeded to open the gift.
"Shoot." Bella muttered. Bella examined the cut on her finger. The blood dripped down her hand...then...All hell broke loose
"NO!" Edward roared
He threw himself at Bella, flinging her back across the table. Full of glassware. It fell, as did Bella. The cake scattered on the floor along with the presents, glass plates and bowls filled with water and roses. Bella landed in the middle of a pile of shattered glass.
I heard the sound of two boulders crashing into each other like in a rock slide. I peeked out from behind Esme and Bash and saw Jasper snapping and growling at Edward. He was trying to shove past Edward. His teeth were inches from Edward's face.
Emmett grabbed Jasper from behind and locked him into his massive steel grip. Jasper still struggled against Emm, his wild, unfocused eyes were locked onto Bella.
I looked over at Bella and I seen she had landed on the floor near the piano. She had blood pulsating out of her arm. She looked up dazed and disoriented, from examining her arm-into the fevered eyes of the eight suddenly ravenous vampires.
Carlisle was the only calm one in all of this
"Emmett, Rose, Bash get Jasper outside."
Emmett nodded, "Come on, Jasper."
Jasper continued to struggle against Emmett twisting and snarling. Edward was in some sort of defensive position over Bella. I heard a low growl coming from him. Rose and Bash guided Jasper out the door that Esme held open with one hand pressed firmly over her mouth and nose.
"I'm so sorry Bella." she cried whilst following the others into the yard. I was standing there rooted to the spot.
"Let me by, Edward." Carlisle murmured
After a few seconds Edward released his defensive pose. Carlisle kneeled down beside Bella and leaned closer to examine her arm. Bella still had a look of shock on her face.
"Here, Calisle," Alice said handing him a towel.
"No, there's too much glass into the wound." He ripped a long thin scrap from the bottom of the table cloth and twisted around Bella's arm to form a tourniquet.
"Bella," Carlisle said softly. "Do you want me to drive you to the hospital, or would you rather I take care of it here?"
"Here, please." Bella knew if she went to the hospital then Charlie would know.
"I'll go get your bag." Alice said
"Edward, take her to the kitchen table."
Edward lifted her bridal style and carried her into the kitchen.
"How are you doing Bella?" Carlisle asked
She gave her usual 'I'm fine' answer. Down playing her pain. I walked into the kitchen with them.
Alice had already set up a work area for Carlisle. After setting her down Carlisle went to work immediately. He gloved up and unwrapped the tourniquet. He pulled out some tweezers and began to pick the glass out of the wound.
Edward stood protective over her.
"Just go Edward," Bella said
"I can handle it." He replied
"Don't be such a damn masochist. Carlisle has everything under control." I said
Carlisle said, "Edward, you may as well go and find Jasper before he gets too far. I'm sure he's upset with himself, and I doubt he'll listen to anyone but you."
"You mean, besides Alice." I said
"Yes, besides Alice." He replied smiling
"You may as well do something useful." Alice replied
Edward's eyes narrowed as we ganged up on him, but he still took his ass outside. After about ten minutes Alice left the room.
"For what it's worth Bells, I told them they had time to cancel this before you showed up. I gave them two opportunities. They didn't listen."
"Thanks Penny. At least you tried." Bells said
"Yea, I-." I fucked up by looking at the pile of glass shards in the bowl that Carlisle pulled out of Bella's arm and from the looks of it; He still wasn't done.
"Woah, Penny you look a little green. Maybe you should go get some fresh air as well."
I could only nod for fear of blowing chunks. I walked out through the kitchen door. As I walked past I heard Bella say
"Well, that's everyone. I can clear a room, at least."
I didn't hear Carlisle response. I walked around to the back of the house where Rose, Bash, Emm, and Alice were.
"Where's Eddie and Jazz?"
"As soon as we came outside and he came to his senses, he bolted. Edward ran after him." Bash said
"You look a little green Penny. Sit down." Bash said. He pushed one of the patio chairs at me. I plopped down and put my head between my knees. I started breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth. After I was sure I wouldn't vomit I slowly raised my head. Emmett was rubbing my back as I sat up straight.
"Thanks, babe." I said while smiling up at him.
"You're welcome." He said as he pecked me on the lips.
"For the record I was right. This was a disaster." I looked around for Esme
"Where'd Esme go?"
"Back inside, probably to clean up everything."
"Oh no, I could've helped her."
"It's best not to get in Esme's way when she's in cleaning mode. She'll have all the cleaned up and bleached down by the time Carlisle finishes stitching Bella up." Bash said
"Oh, okay. You might want to find Bella a new shirt. Something similar to what's she has on. Just to keep Charlie from being suspicious."
"I'll go find her something." Alice said as she walked back toward the house.
"What were her other gifts. The stereo is from Rose, Jazz and Emm.?"
"Well, Edward made her a CD of his compositions including her lullaby. Carlisle and Esme got her a plane voucher to Jacksonville. I believe it's for Bella and you. They were going to have Edward go instead but Esme decided that maybe you wanted to see Renee and Phil too." Rose said
"I do. Besides Jacksonville is just like Malibu, sunny every single day. Rene and Phil might not be as sharp as Johnny and Amelia but that doesn't mean he should take the risk."
The nodded in understanding.
"You didn't get her anything Bash?"
"No, I put my foot down with Alice and respected Bella's no gift wishes. I still don't know how she roped Rosie into this." Bash said
"Easy, I told her to just stick my name on whatever she bought for Bella. I'm sure Bella knows that the gift is more from Jasper and Emmett than me." Rose said "While, I don't truly hate Bella. I just don't like the fact that she's so ready to die."
"Yea, but it's her choice. She's not making it for the right reasons but still her choice. Who knows maybe in a year she might change her mind. I mean I'd rather be 21 forever as opposed to being 18 forever."
"Why 21?" Rose asked
"I can legally buy alcohol, duh."
Bash and Emmett started laughing. Rose just smirked
"Hey, if I'm going to choose to become a vampire I want to look old enough to buy my own beer damn it." I said laughing. "That and the thought of repeating high school again...and again...and AGAIN is not appealing at all. I'd rather repeat college. Why? FRAT PARTIES!"
We had a good laugh for 10 mintues. Edward and Bella came out of the house. They were heading to Bella's truck.
"First of all, when did he get back?"
"I don't know. I guess whilst we were laughing." Bash said
"Alice must have switched off with Edward." Rose said
"Well, I guess I should head back home too."
"I'll go pull the Jeep around." Emm replied
"No, I have a better idea."
Emmett looked at me with a raised eyebrow. I jumped onto his back and wrapped my legs around his waist. My arms went around his shoulders.
"You haven't ran with me on your back since my birthday. I figured this would be faster than getting the jeep and driving the speed limit. Besides I kind of want to beat the tank home."
Emmett just nodded and took of running through the forrest. It was exhilarating and amazing. He dropped me off at the edge of the forrest and walked me to the door.
"Good night Emmett."

He kissed me and then he walked back to the forrest edge. Once I was inside he took off.
"Bella?"
"No, It's me Charlie."
I walked into the living room and he was sitting on the couch watching tv.
"Why you home so early? Where's Bella?"
"She drove her truck, remember. Emm...I mean Alice picked me up from school and then she brought me back here."
'I almost forgot the 'older' Cullen siblings are away at college.'
"Oh alright." Charlie replied. "So how was the party?"
"It was an interesting night. I can say that much."
Charlie pondered what I said. "Well at least you had fun."
"That I did Charlie. Well, I'm beat. Good night."
"Good night."
I walked up to my room and grabbed my toiletries bag and headed for the shower.

I was laying across my bed when I heard Bella in the bathroom. I got up and went into the bathroom and walked into her room.
"I'm going to Jacksonville?" Bella asked
"Yes, you and Penny both. Esme almost had me go with you but at the last minute thought maybe Penny wants to see Renee too." Edward replied
"I would've rather you come with me." Bella replied
"Bella..." Edward started
"And put himself at risk for exposure...Renee and Phil might not be the sharpest tac in the bunch but that doesn't mean Edward should take that risk. Shame on you for being so selfish. I know that Edward told you about the Volturi and their laws. You should realize how dangerous it is for Edward to take that risk. Emmett and Edward are already taking a big enough risk just dating us and exposing us to their world. Unless you want to die and have the entire Cullen family slaughtered I suggest you change that attitude. Be grateful for the plane voucher and prepare your ass for a trip to Florida with me."
Bella chewed on her bottom lip for a minute before she answered me.
"You're right Penny. It's too dangerous."
I just nodded.
"Besides, I have a Golden Pass for Disney and I plan on taking full advantage." I smirked.
"Goodnight Bells, Edward"
"Goodnight Penny"
I walked back into my room and flopped down on my bed. I fell into an uneasy sleep. I have the strangest feeling that this situation with Jasper isn't over.
'How could Alice not forsee this?'
'Why'd Jasper lose it over a simple cut?'

AN: Hey everyone! I'm sure you've noticed that I included a family tree for Emmett. Ms. Stephenie didn't really go into much detail about the biological families of each of the Cullen family members. The only thing that is mentioned about Emmett's family is that it was a large Scottish family and they live in Gatlinburg, TN. I had to create the rest.
