Emily woke up to her alarm, she always wakes up half an hour before JJ would so she would have enough time in the bathroom. She looked over she saw JJ sitting up her bed scrolling through her phone headphones in. she pulled herself out of bed and went into the bathroom to do her hair; her hair was naturally curly so she straightens it every morning. Half an hour later her hair and makeup were done and she came back out of the bathroom, where JJ was just getting out of bed to get dressed.
"Hey don't forget we are all going to the church, before the station, for the memorial service" Emily said rummaging through her Go Bag for clothes.
JJ was momentarily filled with panic but quicky composed herself. "Oh yeah I forgot about that, thanks" JJ really didn't want to go back to the church for several reasons, one of which was she would have to face Bro. Jesse and that could go bad in so many ways, but she couldn't stay behind again; she would just power through it. What would be worse than Bro. Jesse would just be the act of going back into the church, she hadn't been in the normal sanctuary since she was 10 years old.
……………………….
The team climbed into the SUVs and started driving to the church. Emily started noticing different things colored red around the town she hadn't before. Everywhere there were benches, water Fountains, bike racks, everything.
No one was walking on eggshells around JJ which she appreciated, everyone was acting like nothing was wrong, but in reality, everyone was worried.
Rossi was ready to solve the case to get JJ out of the Town, he could tell there was something about it she wasn't telling them. spencer was trying to remember anything JJ had said about her childhood to him so he could figure out what was happening. Hotch was still confused at where JJ went the night before. Emily was worried about JJs outburst and mood swings and started thinking about JJ possibly having PTSD from whatever happened before in this town. Garcia was shamelessly looking through JJs past every chance she had and forming her own theory. Morgan had gone into full protective big brother mode, watching out for anyone who might want to hurt JJ.
JJ felt bad leaving Luke alone this morning, she had got a text from him the night before saying he needed to tell her something, but after seeing hotch she didn't want to go back out of her room. When she got out of bed early enough for Emily to be asleep, Luke was sound asleep and she didn't want to wake him, she checked again before they left to see if he was awake, he wasn't so JJ would have to talk to him later.
They pulled into the church parking lot and JJ took a steadying breath. The parking lot was packed, it looked like everyone in the town was there and JJ didn't doubt that.
There was a time for everyone to come pay their respects before the actual service, the team had come just as the service started. They went in the front doors of the church and through the small foyer to the doors at the back of the sanctuary. Everyone else went in the doors in the back doors, but JJ hesitated, her instincts kicking in but she forced herself to walk in.
The team kept a low profile standing against the back wall. The sanctuary looked the same as the last time she saw it nearly 17 years ago. There were stained glass windows from floor to ceiling, long rows of pews- enough to fit probably 400 people all packed with people, the three children's caskets were at the front of the room in front of the stage where bro. Jesse was reading a passage. There was no sadness in the room; no tear. In fact, there was no emotion at all.
Bro. Jesse finished reading the passage and looked up noticing the team in the back, he looked shocked for a moment before going back to his stoic gaze, he began speaking looking right at JJ. "Jennifer Jareau" everyone in the room turned to look at her each with the same disgusted look, confusing everyone standing with JJ. "I think you know what I'm about to say"
JJ lowered her gaze to the ground, and nodded turning and leaving the room. leaving an even more confused team. As soon as she was out of the room everything went back to normal like nothing happened Bro. Jesse going back to speaking about what he has just read.
As soon as Bro. Jesse saw her JJ knew what was going to happen, and she didn't even have to be told as she turned to leave the room, before she left, she caught her father's eyes, they were full of anger. she definitely wasn't looking forward to the conversation she would have to have with the team explaining.
JJ walked out of the sanctuary, she wasn't quite sure where to go or what to do. She couldn't leave, but she couldn't go back in the room, but then a red door caught her eye. The red wasn't quite as bright as it was everywhere else, but still red nonetheless.
JJ slowly approached the door preparing herself for what she would find. She opened the door and her heart sunk "there are so many of them" she thought sadly, so many more then when she was there and all the Sundays she had spent in that room. In the room there were two long rows of pews much like the ones in the sanctuary but colored- you guessed it- bright red, each was filled to the brim with children, the youngest JJ could see looked no older then 7, JJ recognized the boy who had greeted her and Luke at the hut in a row in the back.
No child spoke and looked rather startled at her presence. Each child was dressed in either a navy-blue dress, or navy-blue suits. At the very front of the room on the same wall the door JJ came in was a projection screen where a live feed of what was happening in the sanctuary was playing. JJ pulled out her badge and showed it so the kids, there were no adults in the room.
"Hello I'm Jennifer with the FBI, don't worry no ones in trouble, I was just seeing what was in this room" she explained hoping to ease some of the kids fear. JJ wanted nothing more than to tell all the kids everything would be over soon and she would make sure they are safe, but she knew this room had at least 4 cameras all recording, in fact she probably shouldn't even be in the room. "Sorry I interrupted" she said and quicky left the room.
JJ still didn't know where to go so she chose to just stand around and hope the service would be over soon. She couldn't bring herself to sit down, it felt illegal so instead she paced and came up with a plan. "Ok I need to tell them as soon as possible" she thought to herself "I had no idea there were these many kids. They can't all possibly me from here. If I tell them I have to talk to Luke first. I would learn more about my brother at least"
JJ formulated a plan, she would work the case like normal today, then she would talk to Luke after, then tomorrow she would talk to Hotch alone and explain as much as she could get through. After that JJ had no idea what she would do.
JJ had no idea how much time had passed before the team back out.
"What was that?" Derek asked storming out of the room with the rest of the team.
"Yeah, I'm with Morgan. Some weird things have happened since we got here but that one just doesn't seem to have a good explanation" Rossi added
"And it doesn't have a good explanation. I'm just not super liked around here" JJ said dismissively. "Now, can we go before I have another run in without someone who has it out for me"
"I think that would be a good idea considering Bro. Jesse just came out and does not look happy" Emily said and sure enough through the doors came a man dressed in his navy-blue suit carrying the bible, with a murderous look on his face"
"Jennifer jareau!" he shouted storming towards JJ causing her to take a full step back and clasp her hands behind her back. Morgan grabbed the angry preacher making sure he didn't get any closer to JJ. "How dare you think you would be welcome in my sanctuary again! If this happens again, I'm getting police involved!"
"I understand, although I don't think you really want any legal attention in this area" JJ said before she could stop herself, she had too much anger towards this man; the clasping of her hands behind her back was not out of fear, but to stop herself from beating the shit out of him. "Have a good day sir" she finished before turning around and walking straight out the door closely followed by her team.
They arrived at the station a few minutes later, and managed to get inside and into the conference room without incident. They all sat around the table to go everything they know so far like they do every morning they are on a case. Everyone pulled out their files and set up Garcia on skype, and Hotch stood up to begin talking.
"Alright, what we know so far is the unsub is likely part of a large operation. We know all the kids had been missing for a while before they were killed, we also know these kids suffered abuse for a long time before they were killed, their bedrooms looked like they haven't been touched in months which means the kids weren't living at home in the time leading to their deaths" he paused to write something down "their parents likely didn't know what was happening to their children, even they caused it, there was nothing sloppy at the crime scene which means this wasn't their first kill"
"Garcia, can you look for unsolved child murders with the same M.O in the whole state" JJ asked closing her file.
"Don't be crazy of course I can" Garcia typed for a moment before answering "I'm not seeing anything"
At the end of the day as the sun set, they still hadn't made much progress, they spent most of the day doing interviews. They loaded into the SUVs to go to dinner, JJ had almost said no and that she should be getting back bur decided going out for dinner wasn't such a bad idea.
Everywhere JJ went she saw someone she knew, and it wasn't any different at the restaurant, they went to the only sit-down restaurant in down- a Mexican place- and every waiter they saw scowled at JJ never responding to her with for more than a nod.
When they were finally back at the tavern JJ didn't even stop by her room before running up to Luke's room to talk to him.
"Luke, I need to talk to you about something"
"Me too"
"Me first" JJ said sitting down next to him on the bed "Ok I figured I needed to talk to you about this before I did it, but I have to tell the team about 'the downstairs' and before you say anything let me explain. I went to the church with the team today for the memorial service, and of course Bro. Jesse kicked me out, and I went into the room they would put us in during church and there were no less then 150 kids. I have to get them out. JJ finished nearly pleading.
"JJ you can tell them, I can even be there if you want me to, but something happened last night. I went out to the graveyard and to my Pawpaw's grave. And over near it was a bright red headstone" he paused to take a deep breath "With your name on it"
……………………….
A/N: look at me updating two days in a row aren't you proud because I'm proud of myself. Now for a few actual notes. I had been planning the church scene really since I started this fic so I hope it turned out okay. Also did you like the cliffhanger, I struggle with actually ending a chapter and that seeming like a good place to stop.
Now I will be I bit less aggressive this time. *clears throat
