Nearly 2 hours later JJ was sitting alone in a sterile smelling urgent care, someone had brought JJ some clothes, she wasn't sure who though, she never actually saw them, Emily had just met them in the hall outside her door. Luckily the Urgent care had been called ahead informing them about the situation, and that JJ would likely only be comfortable with females.
JJ sat on the exam table like a little kid while Emily still not leaving her side and sitting in a chair next to her. JJ still hadn't indicated that she remembered anything, and Emily couldn't tell if she was just protecting herself or if she really didn't remember.
A female doctor came in the room and began gently asking JJ questions, most of which she couldn't answer. It wasn't till the doctor left the room for a few minutes JJs brain caught up with her body and she remembered. Everything. Every little thing.
JJ motioned franticly towards the trashcan, knowing if she tried to stand up and get to it, she would just hurt herself more, Emily shoved the bin in front of JJ just in time as JJ emptied the contents of her stomach- which wasn't a lot.
It was like JJs body just gave up, she slumped down onto the table unable to process anything. Luke was dead. And ben. And Ethan. And her parents. And Roslyn. Of course, Roslyn had been dead for years, but every loss JJ had ever experienced was going through her head.
People say that right before you die your life flashes before your eyes, what JJ wasn't prepared for was someone else's life flashing before her eyes. She replayed every memory of Luke she had, some good, most bad. JJ felt the same feeling she felt when she found Roslyn, she froze, her brain unable to process anything. That feeling didn't last long.
Luke was dead.
Dead.
JJ was alone.
There was no possible way for him to come back.
JJ could never call him at midnight to talk about the new episode of her favorite show
Or to vent about a rough case
There would be no more weekend trips to visit
No one to tell her that no, your team doesn't hate you.
She would never have a person to beat Mario cart in
Luke was gone.
JJ didn't know what happening around her, she just cried, and cried, and cried, until she had no more tears, the next time she knew anything of what was happening around her Emily had moved to sit next to her and had pulled her into her arms and was rocking her back and forth.
JJ gasped in between sobs trying to take back some control over her body, although unsuccessful. JJ leaned into Emily's embrace though not finding as much comfort as she should have.
"I wanna go home" JJ said voice small and cracking "Please"
"You want to go back to Virginia" Emily asked, home could mean anything. JJ nodded against her chest the sobbing having slowed down likely from pure exhaustion.
"I need to take ash; he needs no come live with me" JJ said her crying having reduced to only hiccups when she remembered about Ash, she then remembered that she hadn't been told that he was alive yet and JJ couldn't just tell Emily her dead sister told her so she made up a lie. "They told me about them before you found me"
Emily nodded, everyone on the team knew JJ would want to take Ash who was currently staying at 'The Hut' with the other kids who were found. JJ was a licensed foster parent, everyone on the team with the exception of spencer was, though JJ had never actually fostered a child. But she did have a room ready to house a boy or a girl.
"I'll make sure the jets ready when we leave here, and Ash can come with us since you're technically this next of kin." Emily reassured her.
After a while with the two just sitting together JJ leaning on Emily, Emily got up to make a few calls so they would be good to go as soon as possible.
JJ sat alone in the room, as bad as she knew it was, she filed away every emotion she was feeling, she often told Emily compartmentalizing wasn't a good habit to make, but truth be told she did it too.
The doctor returned before Emily explaining all JJs injuries, she had a few broken ribs, some massive bruising, burns down parts of her legs, many cuts that had already been given stitches, as well as some other things that I wont mention. The doctor also told her she should see a therapist- something JJ would not be doing- and that someone would need to stay with her for a few weeks- another thing JJ wouldn't do. Unfortunately, Emily walked back in just as that was being said and volunteered herself leaving no room for argument.
Emily led JJ out of the building helping her into the SUV, JJ had stopped talking and looked a million miles away but she needed time to processes, this was different then grief, grief was long term, what JJ was feeling was short term, or at least she hoped so.
The airport was a little ways away and Emily took that time to explain how they found JJ and about her parents- she wanted to do it before they were around Ash, he was just as traumatized at JJ. Though Emily had a feeling JJ already knew what she was telling her, Emily had nearly died once too.
When they began there walk from the SUV to the jet, JJ leaning heavily on Emily she stopped abruptly causing Emily to stop too. JJ was about to meet Ash, despite talking with Aunt Mae and Becca JJ didn't know a lot about him.
She started up again towards the jet, it was time to rip of the Band-Aid. The jet was quiet, a rare occurrence especially when everyone was there. JJ boarded after Emily eyes immediately scanning for Ash, she couldn't see him in the main area which meant we was in the smaller Area separated by a curtain, normally used by someone after a case hit them harder than normal.
JJ ignored everyone else on the jet walking straight back to where Ash was, she did have to stop Emily from following her. Huddled in the corner of a chair was a small 11-year-old boy- or he was supposed to be 11- he looked to small, but he was never probably fed enough. His hair was blond just like JJ and looked almost exactly like her. He still had navy blue pajamas on.
"Ash?" JJ said sitting down in the chair across from him so she didn't crowd him.
Ash lifted his head from where it was buried in his knees to look up at the new voice, when he saw her, he knew exactly who she was, and a sense of relief washed over him, although they had never met Ash felt safe with JJ.
"JJ?" he asked just to be sure
"Yeah, that's me" JJ said, one might expect her to cry but she didn't. she was out of tears.
"Can you please not call me Ash" he said uncurling from hi ball sitting up a little straighter as the plane took off.
"Of course," At this point JJ would buy him a house if he wanted. "Can I ask why"
"That's what they always called me and I don't like it" He said, and JJ knew who 'they' was.
"What would you like me to call you?"
"I don't know I've never really thought about it. Just nothing that sounds like Ash"
JJ thought for a moment there were several names she could suggest but one seemed to be the right choice. "What about ben"
"Yeah, I think I like that" he said a slight smile crawling onto his face.
The two sat in silence for a while, JJ didn't push, she knew it would take time to build a relationship, but she was willing to put in the work.
"Where are you going JJ" Ben- formally known as Ash- said breaking the silence as he looked out his window, into the dark sky.
"Home" JJ said "we're going home"
