Chapter 13: Flatline

(Narrator POV)

An hour had passed since the nurse told me about they were prepping him for surgery. In that time Amanda and Kat came by with Noah to let her know that he was in good hands and safe with them. She didn't say much and they were really worried about her. They knew how much she cared for Edgar it was evident whenever they were around each other. And now this happened if Edgar didn't make it... it would break Liv.

Edgar's family should be here any minute now. They only live in Queens which was about a 40 minute drive. But in this weather it would take and hour to and hour and a half due to the traffic as well.

Fifteen minutes later a nurse came by and asked if Olivia needed anything. There was still no update on his condition. Olivia didn't want anything but for Edgar to be okay.

Right after the nurse left Edgar's family had walked away. Of course Olivia didn't know that, she had only spoken to his sister over the phone briefly but Edgar had shown his sister a picture of Olivia when he saw her a week ago. And his parents of course knew who she was too. That's when Morgan; his sister, walked up to Olivia.

"Olivia?"

"Yes do I know you?" She asked sweetly but when she looked up at the person talking to her. Morgan could see the pain in her eyes.

"Uh I'm Morgan; Edgar's sister. These are our parents and these are my two kids. AJ and Sasha. How you heard anything yet?" They were all we're crying or had cried at some point Olivia could tell.

"Oh I'm sorry I didn't recognize you. I haven't heard anything since I've called you all. Last I heard is that they were prepping him for surgery. Where are my manners? I'm sorry I'm Olivia nice to meet you Mr and Mrs. Goodwin. And nice to meet you in person Morgan." She waves at the two little kids they waved back.

"Hi, Olivia." Edgar's mom said coldly. Olivia didn't know why she was being cold it was probably just emotions everywhere.

"I'm Ulrich and the is Dianne. Its nice to finally meet you. I wish it wasn't under these circumstances." They shook hands.

"Well the set up a family room for you all and I was just waiting for you guys to get here. Follow me." Olivia walked everyone back to the family waiting room. "Here you guys go. I'll be out in the waiting area if you need me." They settled in and Olivia was walking out when Ulrich stopped her. "The plenty of space in here you can stay in here with us it's FAMILY waiting room."

"No, she should be out there. It is a family room. She's not family. If it wasn't for here he would have never been in this condition."

Olivia has he answer of why she was being so cold earlier. She felt like it was Olivia's fault that Edgar was in the car accident. Did Olivia deny that. No. Because she felt the same way. But his mom didn't have to say it.

"I think I'm gonna go. Do you guys need anything? Did the Kids have time to eat, Morgan?"

"No they didn't. But I can get it, it's no problem."

"It's fine I can get it. I need to be preoccupied it helps me not think about... this." She choked up at the end.

"Okay well McDonalds breakfast will be fine. Thank you so much."

"No problem. Ulrich, Dianne do you need or want anything?"

"A coffee and some breakfast I don't really care what." Ulrich answered.

"A coffee as well no food." Dianna spoke.

"Okay I'll be back." Olivia left.

Back in the room Morgan and Ulrich couldn't believe Dianne's behavior and demeanor towards Olivia. "Mom why would you speak to Olivia like that? It was rude an unnecessary. She was nothing but nice to us. She offered to get us food. And you were incredibly rude to her. How would think Edgar would feel if he saw the way you spoke to her. You know Edgar loves her and for you to speak to her like that... it would break his heart to see that his mother hates his girlfriend. You always talk about how you want him to be happy. Well he is now and the woman he loves feels like you hate her." Morgan finished her rant and Ulrich just sat back and watched and didn't say shit. Dianne realized her attitude needed to be checked because she was out of line for speaking to Olivia that way. She knew Edgar loved her. She would have to fix it.

"You're right. When Olivia gets back I will talk to her and apologize." They all sat in silence while the children play on the iPad. Olivia came back with food and coffee they all thanked her. "Olivia can I speak with you for a moment. It won't take long." Olivia was nervous the woman already didn't like her so what could she want now.

"Sure I actually need to get me something from the cafeteria downstairs. Walk with me?"

"Sure."

"What is it that you wanna talk about?" Olivia sweetly asked, even though Dianna hated her. Or so she thought.

"Umm. I want to apologize for the way I treated you earlier. I was emotional and I took it out on you which is not fair. I just want to start over. Because my son loves you Olivia and I love that fact that he found someone like you. You seem amazing. I just wants to say I'm sorry."

"It's okay. I mean there's nothing you said that wasn't true. I'm not family and it is my fault he ended up in the accident." Olivia was crying again. She had so much heartache. It was becoming to much. She really felt like it was her fault.

"It's not your fault honey. You could have never predicted that this would happen. I should have said that earlier. Because it's not true and I don't want you to think that it is. And the way Edgar talks about every time he talks with us. You might as well be his wife. I have never seen him this happy." Dianne laughed but Olivia didn't she was still mentally kicking herself about the situation. "And your son, Olivia..." that cause Olivia to look up at Dianne. "Yes we know all about Noah. He talks about him almost more than he talks about you. He loves you both so much and I won't be the one to break you two apart and I won't let anyone try to. But again I'm sorry."

"I forgive you. You were emotional. It's fine." They were in the cafeteria.

"So tell me Olivia do you feel the same way about Edgar?"

"I do. We actually just told each other for the first time the we love each other, yesterday."

"Really. Wow he is serious about you. He never even mentions a woman of interest to us before he has dated her for at least eight months, let alone say I love you. You must be the perfect one for him."

"I hope so because he's the perfect on for me." Olivia went on to tell Dianne about their date and everything that happened even the Eder couple who spoiled their dessert.

"People are going to be like that but don't let them dictate your love for one another."

They kept there conversation going until they got back upstairs to the family waiting room.

Many hours have passed now and a nurse finally came to let them know that he was out of surgery, but still unstable and asking for Olivia. Olivia was so happy.

"I think you guys should go see him first." Speaking to his parents.

"Olivia he is asking for YOU. Go see home we can come in a few minutes." The all agreed. Olivia jumped up and went to go see Edgar.

"Edgar, baby your alive." She cried as she went over to him. He had his hands out for her. "Don't ever do that to me again. I worried sick." She cried.

"Look at me I'm okay. In pain but okay. You are worrying yourself too much." He started wiping her tears away. His parents were out side of the window and saw the affects between them and their sone was being so sweet and loving to his girlfriend in his state. They walked in. Edgar saw them and was confused.

"Mom, dad? When did you guys get here."

"Olivia called us when everything happened. Since we were already coming for Christmas we grabbed our bags and drove here. We're so glad you're okay son." Dianne got tears eyed.

"Im gonna leave and let Morgan and the kids come in. I'll be back later I promise but the squad has Noah right now and he's probably ready to leave."

"Morgan, AJ, And Sasha are here? Where's Kevin?" Olivia didn't know who he was talking about.

"Kevin was at work but should be on his way here." Ulrich spoke.

"Okay."

Olivia kisses Edgar bye "I love you."

"Love you too. Can you bring Noah up here later?"

"Sure he probably wants to see you anyway." Olivia left. And Morgan and her kids walked in "Uncle E!" They ran to his side. "Kids be careful we don't want to hurt Uncle E anymore, okay?"

"Yes mommy." Sasha said

"So Edgar what happened?" His father asked.

"My car was t-boned and it made my car slide into another which came at me from the other side. I'm lucky to be alive. The other two drivers died." He realized how blessed he was.

"Do you know your injuries and how bad they are?" Morgan asked.

"Ummm I don't remember all of them but I know that my left side of my body is really damaged. My left leg is basically shattered, I have 4 broken ribs that punctured my lung which make it hard for me to breathe, luckily my arm didn't take much since I was driving and I'm rather tall my forearm has a big gash from a piece of glass that came at me, and I have a major concussion. And my right side just has a lot of cuts." He said taking breaks to breathe it was getting harder towards the end. "Cal you close the blinds they are hurting my head?"

"Sure honey." Dianne rose and closed them. "How are you feeling?"

"Uhh I'm head is pounding it hurts the most but my ribs are causing me to be very uncomfortable." He started cough and took a deep breath after his cough stopped.

"Well we'll be here until after January 11. So we can help you out." They all nodded in agreement of what Morgan said.

"Okay. Where did Olivia go?" Edgar asked. Everyone looked him strangely. They were worried because he didn't remember and she only left twenty minutes ago. It must be his concussion.

"She went to go get Noah, remember?" AJ said.

"Oh that's right. Thanks little man." Edgar took in a sharp breath. "Can someone call for a nurse? My arm is in so much pain." He groaned in pain. Everyone was growing more worried the doctors said he wasn't stable but he looked fine. Ulrich hit the nurse button then went out to hall to get one.

"Mr. Goodwin what's going on?" The nurse asked.

"My arm- argh- it hurts really badly." Groaning loudly this time.

"Okay I'll get you an extra pillow to elevate to see if that helps okay?" Edgar nodded while he grimaced in pain.

The nurse came back with the pillows. "How's that?"

"It still hurts but it's a little better. Thank you."

"Uncle E are you okay you're sweaty?" Sasha said not knowing it would cause the adults in the room to get even more worried.

"I'm fine sweetie, thank you. I'm just a little hot."

"Edgar you're like drenched in sweat. What going on?" Morgan worriedly asked.

"I don't know it's my arm it's make my body feel- UGHHH" His left arm had the IV in it and blood all of a sudden was coming through his IV and his gains were popping out of his arm. He clenched his fist. His heart monitor start going off. That's when Olivia walked in with Noah. She let go go of Noah's hand and ran to Edgar's side. "Edgar, baby? Talk to me." "What's going on? When I left he was fine." She looked back at everyone everyone was in shocked and didn't know how to assess the situation Ulrich ran how to get doctors, Morgan was holding his right hand crying, all of the kids were scared and ran out of the room to the hallway, and Dianne was out with kids crying as well.

"Edgar stay with me... you stay with me okay. You're gonna be just fine. Breathe baby breathe." Olivia strokes his hair. The doctors rushed in and Ulrich walked out to be with his wife. Morgan nor Olivia moved. The doctor first asked Morgan to leave. When she didn't budge he asked again and she walked out. "Olivia you know you can't stay in here." Edgar flatlined. Which caused Olivia to cry harder. "Olivia I need you to leave so that I can save him!" Ulrich went in to help Olivia out. She was a mess, so was his daughter and wife but Olivia was distraught. She was screaming in tears she fought Ulrich the entire way out and kept saying no. Pushing Ulrich. When they got out to the hallway Ulrich hugged her tightly and rubbed her back while cried. "It's gonna be okay. He'll be okay." He just kept saying that not really believing it himself. Tears bayed his eyes.

They all ended up back in the waiting room not knowing how they got there it had all been a blur. All they knew was that the most caring and loving person just flatlined right in front of them.

Morgan just got a text from Kevin saying that he was here. She went down to get him. They came back up and Dianne and Morgan both had some by their side through all of this but Olivia was lonely. The person who's shoulder she would cry on is currently fight for their life. She was gonna throw up. She felt sick all morning. She ran to the bathroom. Noah didn't know what to do. "Noah stay here. I'll go check on your mom. Kevin can you take the kids downstairs to the cafeteria and gift shop just let them walk around. Or you can take the out somewhere just get the out. Please?"

"Sure." He kissed Morgan bye. And Morgan was out to look for Olivia. She saw a family bathroom and she knocked on it "it's occupied" a crying Olivia said.

"Hey Olivia, it's Morgan. Can you open the door?" No answer. "Please Olivia I'm worried about you. You haven't said much since we arrived." Still no answer. "Olivia please talk to me." Olivia stood up and opened the door it made her feel even more nauseous and she automatically turned around and threw up once again. Morgan closed the door behind her and let Olivia get it out. Morgan had this suspicion earlier because Olivia looked off. But now she would ask.

"Hey Olivia if you don't mind me asking. Are you pregnant?" Her question shook Olivia she couldn't prepare for this question. But there is no way she's pregnant and plus if she were she wouldn't be showing symptoms of morning sickness this early.

"No I am not."

"Okay I was just wondering. Well that's out the window. Now I know what wrong."

"I don't think you do. But I feel fine now."

"I do. You're upset because Kevin is here and my dad. You're alone while you're man is fighting for his life. You need your shoulder to cry on. But he isn't here for you. Am I right or am I right?"

"Spot on."

"Well is there anything I can do for you?"

"No. Thank you for this though."

"No problem. Let's go back to the room." They got up and left to head back to the room when they walked in Olivia didn't see Noah. "Where's Noah?" She started to panic and hyperventilate.

"Olivia calm down. I asked Kevin to take the kids to run around they have been cooped up here all day and he let Noah go along. Noah is fine."

"Okay. Okay. Thank you." They once again sat in silence and waited to hear that Edgar would be okay.
