Kae Membrana: I loved writing Hawks in this. It was so fun! Yeah, what happens for the rest of the story is still horrible for Luffy, but not as physical like the torture and all.
Finished writing and editing a 500 page story in 2 weeks lol. It's another crossover with Ace as the main character. He's part dragon and has to deal with a lot of physical, emotional and societal conflicts because of it. Izuku is his adopted brother, so he's a main character. So, I'm torn between posting that one or the most chosen shape shifting Ace story where there are no villains and it's just Ace's troubled life as a hero student. They're very different. And in the shapeshifting one, Ace's quirk is kind of OP. In the dragon one, he's not OP and has to work really hard to be strong. Which one would you like?
We've got Hawks high on pain medication in this one lol. Enjoy~
Luffy was restless at school. All Might was their substitute because Aizawa was going with the pro-heroes to infiltrate the care facility and try and kill all the nomus. No one but him knew about it, so nobody knew why he was wearing his costume headset that was connected to Hawks, having asked Hawks to let him know when the operation was over. That also didn't know why he had a pinched face on all day.
"Luffy, are you okay?" Midoriya finally asked. Luffy nodded, saying Hawks was on a mission and he was worried about it. "What's the mission?"
"I can't talk to anyone about it. Just know it's really, really dangerous," Luffy replied. Tokoyami got up and walked over, looking concerned as well. "I have the headset on so he'll tell me when it's over. It should be really quick, but there hasn't been any messages yet. So I'm just really worried."
He clasped his hands together on the desk, and didn't have an appetite to eat. Luffy had suggested something that he didn't know would be a bad idea. If the nomus were under 60% complete, would unplugging them do anything? What if they woke up? What if they all broke out? What if the whole building fell on top of them?
Luffy put his hands to his face and Tokoyami put his on Luffy's shoulder. "Worrying will get you nowhere. Have faith in him."
"I have complete faith in Hawks. But this mission is more dangerous than any we've ever had. Any of us. Even you guys rescuing Eri-chan wasn't this bad." The others sat up, shocked. "In theory, it should be over immediately if everything goes to plan."
He finally couldn't wait after lunch and pressed the button and asked if Hawks was okay. There was no response for a few minutes. "I'm not dead."
Luffy let out a sigh, but that didn't mean Hawks wasn't injured or in danger. He was just still alive. Tokoyami asked what had happened, and Luffy relayed Hawks' message. They both sat silently, and Luffy pulled the news up on his phone. It showed a huge mass of fire where the old folks home had been, and charred black things on the ground. There were a huge amount of heroes, many of them sitting on the ground.
"After some sort of battle, it seems to be over as the heroes at the scene are recuperating. The nomus that resemble that of the one that attacked Luffy months ago seemed to have finally stopped moving. Hopefully, this is the end of the battle," the woman in the helicopter said. Luffy looked closely and saw Hawks sitting on a car, one of his wings missing a lot of feathers. But he was alive.
Clearly exhausted. "Hawks? What's wrong with your wing?"
"You watching the news?" Luffy confirmed that. "It's fine. The feathers were burned but will come back. Nobody is dead and the mission is complete. Mirko lost an arm and Endeavor got nailed in the face pretty badly."
"But I thought they were incomplete!" Luffy said. "They weren't supposed to be so powerful."
"They were incomplete. That didn't make them not dangerous. But, most of the attacks they landed on us were by accident. They weren't smart nomus, not even smart enough to know not to attack each other. There were twenty of them, and some of us got in the middle of vicious fights between them. It was definitely not what anybody was expecting. Made things messy."
"What about the guy who was making them?"
"We've got him in custody. He was involved with the League of Villains. Looked like he just kept making them after they were finished. Two of them were programmed how we expected. They went after me and Endeavor only. That's how I lost most of one wing. But luckily, they weren't complete.
"It's only thanks to you that we were able to kill and confirm they were the last nomus. All of the research that the guy had done is in flames. He'd need to have memorized everything to ever hope of making one again. But he's going to jail, and it seems that the League is finally, completely finished."
Luffy said he only found them by accident. And was just lucky to get a hard drive. "You've been the downfall for them three times. When you tipped them off and got All for One captured in that incident, the time when you turned in most of them and now you tipped off their last location."
Luffy made a small smile, though he was sad for those with bad injuries. "I wish I could have done something to help."
"No what-ifs. You made your contribution and it was up to the pro-heroes to deal with this. And actually succeed for once." Luffy sighed in relief and asked if he was okay. "Most of us have wounds that will heal but should still go to the hospital anyways. I have some scratches and burns, but nothing that won't heal on its own."
Luffy bit his lip. "I was so scared."
"Sorry to worry you. But we're okay. Nobody died, and nobody is going to die. The mission was a messy success, but a success nonetheless."
"Hawks is okay," Luffy told Tokoyami.
"Aw, was he worrying about me, too?"
"Yeah. What hospital are you going to?"
"Jaku General Hospital," Hawks answered. "My wing probably will take a couple days to recover. Ugh, I'll be land bound. Sounds terrible."
Luffy smiled and said he was just glad it would recover. It would probably take shorter than Luffy's original lost wing had. It had done a valiant job trying to heal, and Luffy felt bad its work went to waste. But they were back now, no matter the pain they'd felt. "You could use the-"
"No. It'll heal on its own just fine."
"If it doesn't-"
"If it doesn't, then I will try it. I promise, my wing will heal."
"Okay."
"You'll probably be in the news again about being the one to find the place. Nobody knows about you tipping off the League to save Bakugo. Three blows to the League of Villains."
"Stop it, I didn't do that much," Luffy said in embarrassment. "I didn't fight them like everybody else or anything. I just ruined their quirks while they slept and tortured them. That's not like a real battle."
"Against the nomu?"
"I lost my wing to that."
"Did you win?"
"Well, yeah. But-"
"I'm trying to get you to realize that you're not a small time, no name hero. Trying to get you to realize you're important. Like with the case about the children dying, you did most of the investigative work. I want you to acknowledge the successes you have already."
Luffy was biting his lip but didn't respond. Then he asked, "Why are you sounding all serious and responsible?"
"To be honest, I thought I was going to die when I got caught up between the nomus trying to kill one another. I was afraid I'd die and leave you all alone. Though you'd have Ace, of course. Still, I was worried about my life but worried about you a lot, too. If I'd died, you would feel guilty for finding the nomus in the first place and beaten yourself up for it forever."
Luffy had tears down his face. "How could I leave a stray I picked up all alone?"
He heard voices on the other end going "awww, that's so sweet" and Luffy laughed. Hopefully Hawks was looking embarrassed. People were insisting to get into the ambulances and go to the hospital to be checked out. "I gotta go, now. Come pick me up later, I don't have the car."
"Okay," Luffy said, feeling happy and glad that everything worked out alright.
Finally, he turned to his waiting friends and told them the conversation was over. He turned the speaker off and told them all about the mission. About what Luffy had seen and Hawks had said. Well, leaving out the personal parts.
"Wait, wait, wait. The nomus were attacking each other?!" Kaminari shouted.
"Apparently. It makes sense since they weren't fully completed. The original nomus who couldn't talk attacked anybody around them. The smart ones had missions. Kill me or kidnap me. If they weren't even as good as normal nomu, then why wouldn't they end up not knowing who to go after?"
Uraraka said, "That does make sense. Good job!"
"Yeah, who knew the nomus were being made under an old person apartment?" Kirishima asked.
"Retirement home," Yaoyorozu corrected.
"Right, right."
After school was out, Tokoyami wanted to check on Hawks, too. He called his mom and told him where he was going, so Luffy flew them to the right hospital. He wanted a face shield like Hawks, where he could see GPS tracking on the side of the glass. It was a new upgrade that wasn't applicable with the glass Luffy had to use.
They landed at the hospital, finding a huge crowd of the media. They saw Luffy and he flew up to the roof before they could ask him anything. He and Tokoyami snuck downstairs and through places they shouldn't be. Luffy was fine with it while Tokoyami looked horrified or sneaking around a hospital before they came out somewhere they maybe should be, and asked where the heroes who were in the battle of the nomus were. "I'm family with Hawks," he said when the woman asked who he was.
It was kind of weird she didn't recognize him, but maybe it was because he didn't have his wings out after landing. She led them to a ward where he heard a happy sounding Hawks. But when he and Tokoyami came into view of Hawks, Luffy's face fell.
There were burns all over his left arm and neck. And he was loopy, with a dumb smile on. "Don't take anything he says seriously right now," Endeavor said, in a hospital bed across the room.
"He's jus' being funny. Hehe, Luffy did a good impression, didn't you? Yeah, he did, he did." Luffy looked to Endeavor, who explained Hawks had been arguing with the doctors about how painful the burns were. So he was put on pain medicine now. Luffy frowned deeply. Hawks told him not to worry about it, everything was fine. It was unconvincing with the loopy grin, different from his usual smile.
Luffy wished he could give him some of his regenerative power, but it just wasn't possible. The burns were covered in bandages, and Luffy worried he'd always have them. On his arms it would be less obvious than on his face.
Then he looked to Endeavor, half his face in a bandage. He didn't understand how he just noticed that. Hawks did say he got nailed in the face. Luffy asked if it was okay, pointing to his own face.
"One of the nomus targeting me and this fool stabbed me, but it slid upwards. My eye is fine and will still work," Endeavor said. Luffy realized that now Endeavor had a scar on his left side, like Todoroki's. He wondered what he thought of Endeavor helping there. He'd been out that day (it was his mom's birthday and he was skipping school to spend the day with her) and so he hadn't heard from Luffy about what happened, just the news.
"That's good to hear," Luffy said, hiding that spite from deep inside. Now you know what that feels like. "How are the other heroes?"
"Mirko had the worst wound. She lost one of her forearms," Endeavor said.
Luffy frowned. Hawks looked sad at this, but his words didn't really make it seem he was taking it seriously. "Bunny can't hop hop anymore," he said in a sad tone. Luffy put his hand to his face. Hawks was going to be a nightmare at home if he stayed like this. But he had clearly been understating his wounds on the phone.
He probably couldn't leave the hospital that night from the burns. Luffy wished he could have been there, but he would have gotten in the way. Hawks would have been worried and distracted the whole time. He would have fucked everything up. All he could do was be thankful he went exploring. He did that a lot, went places he kind of shouldn't go and found good things from it.
"Hey, Luffy. Take a picture, I'm a war hero," Hawks said, looking dazed. Didn't exactly look like a war hero, but he took out his phone and instead started filming.
"How do you feel Hawks?"
"I'ma' super-hero hero. I flew in there and I saved everybody. I was so cool. He thinks I'm cool, too, right?" Hawks rambled, pointing at Endeavor, and Luffy turned the phone to see Endeavor looking defeated and exasperated. Hawks had clearly been annoying him for a while.
The nurse came over and Luffy still filmed Hawks looking silly, asking when Hawks would be able to go home. "Tomorrow, if he stays stable," she replied.
Hawks looked like he'd just been told his dog died. "No… I can't fly and I can't escape on foot either?" He hung his head. Tokoyami was looking awkward but also a little entertained. He was out of view, clearly not really wanting Hawks to see him while he was like this. He was right if he thought Hawks would embarrass him.
"I'm sure you can last until tomorrow morning. I'll make you muffins and bring them here and to everyone else." Hawks sighed, an ultra-pout on. He complained that he had to eat hospital food. "Just for tonight."
"I fought in a war, I want good food," he lamented. Luffy was filming the whole time to show him later and make him embarrassed. "Luffy, you be my double and you stay and I'll go home and make the muffins." Luffy snorted, unable to help it.
"I don't think that would work. They'd definitely notice."
"Damnit, I thought it would work, too," Hawks said, like he had had this brilliant plan that wasn't implausible. Which might be what he was thinking at the time. Endeavor asked him, "So, your wings grew back? I saw it online."
Luffy brought his wings out and nodded, saying they just came back one day. Told him his quirks had spiked with power, making his regenerative power work on overdrive, too. "I don't know if the spike will last, but it got my wings back."
"Luffy's wings are pretty, look," Hawks said. Thank god Luffy was still filming when he started giggling.
"Oh, Hawks, you're going to be so humiliated later," Luffy said. And in front of Endeavor, too. But the number one hero spoke next, and Hawks would be happy to hear it later.
He said, "He fought well despite the fact he isn't good against strong opponents with his quirk. But he made it work and took down one of them, stabbing it in the back of the neck, which seemed to do the trick." Luffy looked at Hawks who grinned and tapped back back of his neck. Man, Dr. Ito saved both of them with the quirk nerve information.
But it was interesting monsters like the nomus would have that, as well. It seemed very unlikely that it would be that way, but Endeavor told him that was how Hawks got it to stop. It was smart, but Hawks was smart. It shouldn't be a surprise. Luffy sat on a chair next to the bed.
"Tokoyami came to say hi," Luffy said, making his classmate glare at him.
"Tsukuyomi!" Hawks said happily. He waved awkwardly. "This is Endeavor."
"I know, sensei," Tokoyami said. Hawks put his hand over his heart. "Are you okay?" Tokoyami asked in worry.
"You called me sensei!" he said. "I'm so happy." Tokoyami looked so awkward so Luffy saved him.
"Remember, your mom is waiting for you, you should go soon. Say bye bye, Hawks," Luffy said. He was suddenly very serious.
"Am I a joke to you?"
"Sometimes," Luffy replied and Tokoyami hurried away.
Endeavor called them both ridiculous. Luffy hid the sour look. So, being friendly and funny with family is wrong? He shook his head, willing the thoughts away. He wondered if Todoroki would visit. Probably not, Endeavor had no family that cared about him. His only friend was Hawks (to Hawks, of course) and possibly All Might in a rival way.
Hawks loudly declared he was hungry. "I can't make you a fancy meal tonight, we're at the hospital."
"Even after I went to war and came back?" Hawks asked, as if offended.
"I'm so sorry, would you like me to hijack the kitchen?" Hawks nodded. "Sorry, that's not possible. It's not my kitchen. I can go pick some food up, though. Where do you want?" Hawks said one of their favorite restaurants. Luffy had a plan. He said he'd be back real soon, and went downstairs to the cafeteria and waited for a half hour before coming back with food he arranged to look fancy on a tray. He still had his camera on.
"So, they didn't have your order today, since they were pretty swamped, so I got what they had," Luffy explained. "And I set it up for you." He gave the tray to Hawks and he thanked him and started to eat. His face turned disappointed, but he was such a regular at the place Luffy supposedly got this food from that he couldn't complain and risk feeling guilty.
He just hoodwinked the number two hero. So, Hawks ate hospital food with no complaints. "Do you want me to get anything from home for you, since you're staying the night."
The drugs were starting to wear off, and apparently Hawks didn't remember most of the stupid stuff he did. "Hey, why were you filming this whole time?" he asked. Luffy said he'd find out tomorrow. "So, what do you want?"
"I don't need anything. I'm tired, though."
"Then I'll leave," he said. I've gotten enough embarrassing things on you for now. "Call me tomorrow when you can come home and I'll pick you up, so you won't be 'land bound'."
"Okay. Night," Hawks said and started snoring. Endeavor eyed Luffy as he left in suspicion. He had no doubt the man knew that what Hawks ate was indeed hospital food. And that Luffy was smart enough to do such a thing. When he got home, he did some homework, though there wasn't much, and then put the news on.
He was used to having Hawks not there when he went to bed or woke up if he had an extreme night or Luffy went to bed early. The news coverage was only on the nomus vs. the heroes. There was little footage of any of the nomus themselves that weren't heaps of black ash, which was good since they would have gone after the news helicopter. But they seemed more interested in killing what was right in front of them.
Still, it was dangerous to have a helicopter there in general. There was only a brief explanation by those on the scene about what had happened. Nothing would be clear until the heroes had a news conference and were open about what happened. He hoped Hawks wouldn't bring him up. He would, based on what he told Luffy earlier, but he didn't want to be thrust into the spotlight again.
His fan page was still going strong with photos of him taken where he is actually happy and lots of speculation about why his wings changed color again. But nothing new. It was nice, he knew he didn't want to be a top hero, he was fine with being a sidekick to a hero he knew cared about his workers, even if he wasn't like family with Luffy.
He went to bed after making muffins and putting them in the large fridge. He'd bring them to the hospital tomorrow and give to the injured heroes who were still there. Since Luffy had become the chef, years ago they had gotten rid of the small refrigerator and now had a massive one that didn't fit with the size of the kitchen.
His alarm on his phone woke him up, as it was the weekend and he could go straight to the hospital. But he waited for Hawks to call. "Take me home. Get me out of here," was what he said when Luffy picked up.
"Morning to you, too. I'll be there in a bit." He sounded like they were torturing him or something. He was sure Hawks was fussy with the treatment aspect of being hurt. He took Hawks' spare suit with him, since he was sure his new one had some damage, in a backpack and then carried a bag of muffins, probably looking ridiculous. He landed back on the roof and made his way to Hawks' room the way he had before, though Tokoyami wasn't there to make horrified faces while doing something unconventional.
Hawks was grumpy in his hospital gown and Luffy put his spare suit down and shoved a muffin in his face. "Eat it, it's not hospital food." Hawks ate it and then three more before inching his way into the bathroom to change, coming out looking much happier. Luffy brought the basket of muffins to the other heroes, including Endeavor, Mirko, Edge Shot, Ryukyu and a handful of others.
He had more than enough muffins, and they thanked him. He thanked them for their service and then left an empty bag to find Hawks waiting impatiently. "Did you get meds?" He held up a bottle of pills. They walked up to the roof and Luffy frowned, turning his head. He had to carry Hawks but didn't want to hurt him. Carrying him with his back to Luffy might hurt his wing.
"How do I carry you without hurting you?" he asked. "I should go get the car. Oh, but I can't drive. Hmmm…"
Hawks said to just carry him under his armpits. Luffy couldn't see how that would be comfortable. "And go fast so we get there faster." Hawks was clearly so done with the hospital experience. And Luffy couldn't remember him going to the hospital after a fight in many years.
"If you say so," Luffy said uncertainly and picked him up under the armpits and flew at a high speed that had Hawks keeping his eyes shut since his glasses had broken. They arrived at their building and entered.
"I'm home! That was awful."
Luffy replied, "You were only there for one night." Luffy didn't complain about being in the hospital for two months, but he didn't say that. "Besides, you got to be buddies with Endeavor. You were quite high on pain pills yesterday," he said vaguely.
Hawks stared at him suspiciously. "Did you mess with me?"
Luffy said he did most of it by himself. Hawks groaned but put his hand out for the phone. So, Luffy played the video for him. He looked horrified by it, but once it was over he said, "Endeavor said I fought well," he gushed. "And also, you're horrible."
Luffy laughed and hugged him. "I'm glad you're okay. When did they say your burns would get better?" he asked, no longer laughing. Hawks said that some of them wouldn't go away completely, but they would not stay like Luffy's road rash had.
"I'm not supposed to do any work for three days, taking the pills and changing the bandages. I'm gonna be so bored. But I feel like crap complaining about it like this after you stayed in a hospital for two months, constantly high on pills yourself."
Luffy sat on the couch and said, "You shouldn't minimize your problems just cause you think mine were worse. Will you tell me about the fight in more detail?" he asked. "Are they all gone?"
Hawks changed into pajamas and came back and said, "Yeah, they're all gone. As long as the villain isn't ever let out of prison and gets tons of money and resources, nomus will no longer exist." Luffy smiled a relieved smile. "You're safe from them now. I'm gonna go check the mail-"
"No, you're going to stay in here and let me do the work," Luffy said, suddenly very stern. Hawks pouted and told him to have fun walking a few steps to the elevator and then another few steps to the mailbox. "I will. And you'll be super jealous of it forever."
When he brought the mail back up, personal mail, it was bills, offers of magazines, the normal trash until he saw a letter addressed to him. He opened it, since all mail for the agency, personal or work related, were screened for weapons or drugs. So it was fine to open it.
He skimmed the reading, mostly saying that he wanted to offer him to work for their company, which the name he didn't recognize. Why were they sending it directly to him in a personal way? "What's that?" Hawks asked curiously.
"Some letter from a company asking if I wanted to work for them." He laughed. "Who would send that?" He handed the letter to Hawks, who read it through.
"Hmm, seems sketchy." He quickly googled the company name, and it came up with nothing. "Seems more like a scam than a letter. There's nothing helpful in this besides this email they give. Don't reply. Their company doesn't even seem to exist."
Luffy frowned, wondering what the point of that was. Luffy did more searching of the company name, but nothing came up. It really didn't seem to exist, so Luffy threw it away and didn't think twice about it again.
Hawks' injuries healed quickly, and he was excruciatingly bored. Not for him, but for Luffy. He finally had enough of the complaining and said he was going to get groceries and instead went on a flight around town. He could understand the frustration of being land bound, but he didn't complain 24/7 about being bored.
He called Luffy on the headset. "Did I annoy you?" Luffy said he felt cooped up and had to go on a flight, but was actually going to go to the store. "Come and take me to fly. Please," he whined. Luffy sighed but said he'd be there in a bit so to get dressed out of his pajamas. "Yay!"
Luffy flew back, feeling sympathetic, and Hawks was dressed fully in his hero clothes. He assured Luffy he had no burns on his back, so he carried him like he had with Tokoyami, close and not feeling like he'd be dropped. Luffy cruised around, and Hawks said Luffy flew differently than he did. "How so?"
"You tilt a lot more, from side to side. You don't even really seem to notice it."
"Really?" Luffy asked in surprise. He paid attention to it and did notice it. "I never noticed. Nobody I've flown noticed either." Of course, they weren't able to fly on their own on a daily basis.
"What's for dinner?"
"Left overs."
Hawks was perfectly happy with the left overs from the food last night. It started to rain, so Luffy zipped them back home, not having gone too far. The moment they entered, Merry ran up to him and started meowing for her canned food. She was getting fat, they should cut back with her diet.
The next two days, Hawks was better about not being annoying, even if he was depressed and bored, unable to leave without showing himself being crippled in one wing. The feathers were reforming at a reasonable pace. Should be back to normal in one or two days. If both sides were that way, he could fly, but they were uneven, so he couldn't.
And he couldn't send one wing's feathers to the other one, which he commented that he'd never known to feel annoyed by it. Luffy said he was just lucky his grew back so fast. "Yeah, I am," he agreed. He seemed to think about Luffy losing his wing a lot, how much more painful it had been, how much messier. Luffy didn't want him comparing, but he wouldn't stop, so Luffy couldn't really do anything about it.
On the day he could go back, Luffy was not on patrol but Tokoyami was. Since Hawks was back with his wings, he would resume his flight lessons with Tokoyami that weekend. That Sunday. The bird teen had not brought up Hawks' embarrassing hospital encounter, which the pro-hero was happy about.
The day after that, the heroes would all be giving their speeches about the mission since they were all healed enough to do so. Hawks said he would mention that Luffy discovered it, but he would not need to attend. Luffy was fine enough with that, it was the best compromise he'd be getting.
So, when he was on TV the next day with the other heroes, Mirko having a missing hand but wasn't acting too bothered by it, but Endeavor and Hawks were the ones with the clear scars and burns. Some burns on Hawk's cheek and next with a big wound on Endeavor's face, as if he'd been stabbed but was lucky and had the wound slide upwards and not impale into his head and kill him. Even he couldn't survive being run through the head with a spear.
They talked about the intention of the mission and how it went wrong and eventually right. The interview was long, and the anchor looked surprised when she was told Luffy gave the tip. Hawks didn't mention Luffy's first tip to spare him potential more trouble at school or attention in the public eye. He just showed he'd outed the League of Villains twice.
During the interview, Twitter was talking about it. But not much about Luffy. It was a passing thought at the moment and he'd probably get more attention later, once everything sunk in for everybody and they had a better understanding about what had gone down at that wrecked retirement home.
But people were happy the nomus were gone, even if some pointed out that they already thought that after the Kamino ward incident. It was true, but Luffy was sure this time they were gone. Hopefully, probably.
Before he got back home, Luffy made them Yakisoba, and then went downstairs and got the mail. Another one mailed him from the same people. He really didn't know who they were, but he hoped he didn't get spam mail like this for too long. Hopefully after he ignored them for a while they'll leave him alone. He threw it out.
