Chapter 28: Hospital visit
(Narrator POV)
Olivia was up all night, in lots of pain. She didn't cry, trying not to disturb Edgar's peaceful slumber. But the amount of pain was almost unbearable she slipped out of bed and made her way to the living room, all she did was pace around which was definitely painfully uncomfortable but it was the best position where the pain wasn't terrible. She was just thinking about lots of things, when it she thought about it. She had to call someone but who would she call it was 4:30 in the morning. She ran through her options and ended with Kat. Someone who was close to Olivia and would be there for her, but kept their distance. "Please pick up, please pick up."
"Cap? What is it?" You could tell she was disoriented. She was woken up by a phone call at 4:30 in the morning. "Listen Kat I need you to listen. How fast do you think you could get to My house?"
"Like your apartment or Edgar's house?" She didn't even realize she said 'my house'. She practically lived there anyway. "Edgar's house. Do you need directions?"
"No I remember how to get there." Olivia could her Kat moving in the background. "Look I'll be there as fast as I can. But I need you to talk to me, tell me what's wrong. So I can be prepared."
"It's nothing too bad it's just... can you get her soon?"
"Yes, I'm coming I told you that Cap. I'll be there in ten."
"It takes 20 minutes to get there to here."
"No if you have a badge." Click. She hung up the phone. She went back to the room to change but she remembered she didn't have any clothes except for her dress and heels. It was her only option. It hurt like hell to put it on but she stayed as quiet as possible. She felt one tear slid down her cheek. It was all just too painful. By the time she got her dress on she saw Kat pull up. She had to hurry to the door before Kat knocked so that Edgar wouldn't wake up. She picked up her heels and opened the door just as Kat was about to knock. "Cap. What's going on?"
"I just need you to drive me to I need you to drive me to Bellevue."
"Bellevue? Cap if you need to get to the hospital you need to go to Mercy it's quicker. And where's Edgar?"
"No I need you to go to Bellevue. And he's in the house."
"Why couldn't he have taken you? Cap, is everything alright."
"I can't say anything yet. Not until I get to the hospital. Can we just hurry now?" The hurried to the car and Kat sped of to Bellevue. Olivia winced and groaned in pain the entire ride. Nervous wasn't even half of what they both were feeling. Kat was nervous, frightened that something was wrong with her captain. Olivia was nervous for reason that couldn't be explained. "We're here."
"Okay I'll go in, go park the car. They'll tell you when I'm ready." Olivia limped inside of the building and one of the doctors immediately saw her. Sometime she wished people didn't know her. "Olivia how can I help you? I heard about what happened yesterday. I'm sorry."
"No, no, I'm fine... well considering. But I need a check up. I didn't go the hospital after everything happened but I just wanna have some look at it."
"Yeah sure. I'll have one of our nurses get you back in a room as soon as possible. Just wait right here- actually follow me." He took her to one of the emergency rooms. "There will be a nurse in; in a few minutes, to run some test. Can I get you anything in the meantime?"
"No. Just... hurry." While waiting for a nurse Kat walked in. "Anything yet?" Olivia just shook her head. Knock knock. "Hi! I'm Emily and I'll be your nurse tonight!" She was so overly peppy for it to be almost 5:00 in the morning. "I'm gonna run through some test ask you a few questions and have Dr. Long come look at ya! What seems to be the issues tonight?"
"Well I was working and I took a gun shot trying to protect my Sargent, it got lodged in my vest it's just causing a lot of pain. But when I came down I tweaked my ankle, fell on my stomach. Now I'm having some pain."
"Okay! Have you had any nausea or vomiting since the pain started?" She shook her head. "No, okay. Did you hear a crack or something when you hit the ground?"
"No."
"Have you had any abdominal issues in the past year?"
"I had a miscarriage in Early January."
"Okay, I'm sorry. Are you pregnant?"
"Yes." It was almost an inaudible whisper.
"I'm sorry Ms. Benson what did you say?"
"Yes." She spoke louder she instantly felt Kat's eyes gaze at her. "Do you know just about how far along you are?"
"5 maybe 6 weeks." Kat's eye just got way bigger. "Well, I'm gonna let Dr. Long know we should run an ultrasound just make sure everything is good with the baby in there. I don't know what we can do for the pain. We usually don't do morphine if the patient is pregnant, I know everything is painfully but in situations like this we try to avoid Narcotics."
"Okay thank you." She let out a little sigh of relief she was no longer withholding this secret. "Look, Kat. It's shocking, I know. But you can't tell anyone. And seriously anyone, not even Edgar... about this. Don't even talk to be about after we leave this hospital."
"Cap... why doesn't anyone know. Something could have gone wrong out there today. And know would have know anything about it."
"Because Kat, I have already had on miscarriage and I can't let Edgar and everyone else go through that kind of pain again. I can't go through that hurt of seeing everyone so sad. So I'm keeping it a secret until I'm well out of the first trimester. That way I can be out of the woods just not in the clear."
"Liv, you can't beat yourself up over that. Nothing, at least not tonight- I'm guaranteeing you nothing is gonna happen to you baby." She grabbed her hand. She never called Olivia anything other than Cap. "Thanks Kat. And you called me Liv..." she said trying to brighten the mood. "Yeah I did but don't get used to it."
"I know. That also explains why you have that mysterious glow everyone notices."
And then Liv's phone rings. "Who is it?"
"Edgar." Olivia didn't know what to do or what she would say to him. "What do I do?"
"Uhhh answer it- wait! No, no, no, don't answer it."
"Cap he's gonna think something's wrong."
"I know answer it."
"What am I gonna say?"
"I don't know. If I tell you he's gonna know you lied. He has a way of figuring out if I'm lying." The phone stopped ringing.
Edgar was scared out of his mind. His thoughts were everywhere. Did they really get Sheila? Did anyone else want to hurt her? Noah? He ran upstairs to see if Noah was there. He was sound asleep. Somewhat of a relief. He sent her a text 'are you okay?' He wasn't necessarily worried about where she was just that if she was okay he would ask where she was. But he was still worried about where she was.
"Hello Olivia!" Dr. Long came into the room. "Liv it's a text from Edgar."
"Ignore it."
"Okay... well how about we start that ultrasound. Uhh would you like a blanket over your legs?"
"Yes please. Thank you."
"It's gonna be a little cold at first." He put the gel on. "Wait- wait! Before you start going through the ultrasound, I don't want to know anything except with the baby is fine. I don't care if you see two babies or eleven fingers I don't want to know yet." She didn't want to know anything without Edgar. She owed him that much.
"Okay that's fine." He rubbed the transducer on her abdomen. After a few minutes, he finally said something. "Everything is perfect. You can relax and sleep tonight knowing that everything is perfect... the way it should be." He tried to word it so he wouldn't give anything away, per her request.
"Oh thank God!" She silently and quickly prayed to God for keeping her baby safe. "Thank you doctor. Can we leave or do I have to sign anything?"
"Well- nah I'll take care of it. Go home get some rest. One day you'll miss it. And for your ankle I'm no orthopedic doctor but ice, elevation, and Tylenol. Will work. And for your back ice, not too much medicine for ya know."
"Yeah. Thanks! Have a goodnight!" Olivia and Kat drove back to Edgar's house. They both were so relieved that everything was perfect. Now she had to tell Edgar something. "Okay Kat our story is that I text you, you were were leaving the precinct, and you were bringing me my bag. But you took me to my house to grab some clothes."
"But where's your bag?"
"It's in your trunk. I remember a week or two ago I put my bag in your trunk and it had extra clothes in it."
"Wow. That's good. But you're a horrible liar sometimes."
"I know but he'll me alone once her knows I'm alive. He's tired and worried. I'm sure he's not gonna care that much anyway." They pulled up in the driveway. Edgar heard a car door close, ran out the room, opened the door and saw Olivia. "It's like 6:00 in the morning, I called you and texted you almost an hour ago! You've been gone for at least an hour and a half!"
"I know. I called Kat to see if she was still at the precinct, she was just leaving and I needed some clothes I asked if she would come pick me up because my keys were in my bag, take me to my apartment, to get some clothes. And I left my bag at the precinct."
"And none of this could have waited until the morning..."
"Apparently not! Now if you'll excuse me-which you will, I'm in a lot of pain right now and I want to relax. So, move." He moved from in front of the door way and she just walked right past him to the master bathroom. Edgar followed her into the bedroom area. Changing her clothes was too much for her to handle by herself, even then with someone it was too much. Just a little easier. She put her pride aside and asked Edgar for help. "Can you help me?"
"Yeah come here, get off your foot." She sat in between his thighs. "Arms up." She tired but the pain was awful. "I can't." She cried.
"Yes you can, I know it hurts but you gotta do it. Just go slow." She attempted to do it again but couldn't. She had tears in the bays of her eyes but refused to let them fall. "I can't!"
"Okay, okay. It's okay. I know you're trying. Stand up real quick. Okay. I'm just gonna pull it over your head and then pull it down off of your arms. It shouldn't be too painful."
He did just that, he was very gentle. "Olivia, where did you really go?"
"Told you-"
"No you didn't. If that's where you really were... why do you have a hospital band on?" She was caught. What does she say? Her lie was airtight but she forgot the hospital band. "Fine. I asked Kat to take me to the hospital. I just need to make sure I was alright. The pain was too bad, so we went to just make sure nothing was majorly wrong." Did she lie, no. Did she tell the whole story, no. But he knows what he needs to know. "Why did you just tell me that? Or what didn't you just wake me up?"
"Because I didn't want to bother you with more of my problems. Tonight was the first night that you could finally relax and know everything was okay. That Noah was okay. That I was okay, this was one simple thing that I could handle in my own. If something was wrong, trust me I would've called you. Listen, you always tell me not to worry, that's all you've done for the last 36 hours."
"And how do you think I felt when I woke up and you were nowhere to be found?"
"I know. But I'm fine. I didn't expect you to wake up, I'm sorry but I'm fine." She gave him a soft hug. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Please just tell me next time."
Edgar went back to sleep while Olivia stayed up. In 30 minutes Noah would have to get up so there was no reason to get comfortable just to get up in half an hour. For the next 39 minutes she sat up on her computer and watched an episode of Monk. She truly admired his detective skills it helped her in real life. With 14 minutes left her alarm went off. She groaned but she had to get up to wake Noah up. Walking into the kitchen she flipped on the light, made herself up the stairs to where Noah was sleeping. "Noah, time for school." He just groaned. She pick a pillow off the bed. "Noah, you should get up if you don't wanna get hit with a pillow..."
"You wouldn't hit me." He laughed cutely. "I won't?" She swung the pillow at Noah. "Mom! I can't believe you actually did that."
"You said I wouldn't, so I had to show you that I would." They both laughed. "Okay but get up. What do you want for breakfast."
"Strawberry French toast?"
"Sounds good to me." They both started on their tasks. Olivia got out the eggs and started whisking. "Oh my..." she put her hand over her mouth. She just barely made it in the bathroom before she started throwing up. She forgot that raw eggs make her throw up now that she's pregnant. "You good?" Edgar popped up behind her. "Yeah I'm good. I don't know what that was about." Liar. But he didn't need to know that. She grabbed some mouthwash, gargled for a little, to get the taste out of her mouth. "I didn't mean to wake you up."
"I never went to sleep. Monk?"
"Yeah. You heard me? I'm sorry. I just get so into the episodes." She smiled. Her smile always made everything better in Edgar's world. "I could tell. What's for breakfast?"
"Noah wants strawberry french toast."
"Sounds good. Do I even have everything for you to make it?"
"Yeah, well kind of you don't have strawberry cream cheese but you have regular cream cheese it's just a substitute. But that's it. Come on, I'm hungry and Noah will want his food as soon as he gets downstairs." He followed her into the kitchen sat on the stool, he turned on sports center. Olivia made six pieces of French toast. While her boys were doing their thing. "Hey babe?"
Edgar said. "Mhmm?"
"After I have PT today; hopefully this is the last time, you wanna go to your apartment or go somewhere? I don't go into work until after noon."
"Yeah just keep a lot of movement out of the picture. My back is hurting little worse than earlier."
"Gotcha!"
"What time is your appointment today?"
"I wanna say 9:00, but I'm not sure. I know it's not before 9:00 so sometime after nine."
Noah came running down the stairs still in his pajamas. "Noah it's 7:00 why are you dressed?"
"Because I don't have any here." Olivia ran her hand across her face. "Okay eat your breakfast, hurry. Because we have to go home to get you changed into some clothes." She sighed loudly. "Okay. Edgar foods ready." They each made their plates and ate at the dinning room table for a change. They hardly ever sat there. "Good morning Edgar."
"Sup Noah!"
"Do you like the french toast?"
"Yeah it's great."
"It's my favorite toast that mommy makes. Hey mommy? Are you okay? I heard yesterday that you got hurt."
"Yeah Noah I'll be fine. Just right now we have to be gentle around me. The doctors told me that I would be okay and everything is perfect!" She quoted what the doctors said about the baby. She really wanted to tell Edgar but it was for the best, just in case something happened. Even though he might be mad at her when she fin tells him the whole truth. She I seriously questioning what to do now. The first miscarriage technically wasn't caused because her body just simply couldn't handle the baby. It was forced by Rick, the assailant that held her hostage. "Okay Noah we gotta go."
"I'll drive." Edgar offered. "Well if you want me to, I... umm." He stumbled over his words because of the look Olivia gave him. "Fine, but you're not driving my car." She said. "I do believe I got that car for both of us..."
"Well who's Christmas present was it?" Short pause. "Exactly." Edgar picked the plates up, placed them in the kitchen. Noah got his shoes, Olivia went barefoot. There was no way she was wear heels again. They all got in the car and sped to Olivia's. In the car Olivia couldn't stop moving, she was too uncomfortable. "Why are you moving so much?"
"Because, my back hurts!"
"Well maybe if you stopped moving it will stop hurting."
"Whatever." She rolled her eyes at him. "Can you just drive." They finally made it to the apartment Edgar picked Olivia up since there was snow in the ground and he wasn't gonna let her walk outside barefoot anyway. "Okay you can put me down now." They made it to her door. "Noah you need to get dressed fast. Oh and get extra clothes."
"Liv be careful there's glass still on the floor." She laid down on the sofa. "Aren't you gonna get your things?" Edgar asked.
"You're here..." she smiled at him. "And you love me, and my back hurts, you wouldn't want me to do anything to make that worse... so you being such a great boyfriend you'd get that for me?" She made a cute pouty. "When you put it like that how can I say no? Seriously how can I say no." He joked with her. "I'm kidding. I got it. Anything you want in specific?"
"No." He walked off to get her some things. Got some slippers, pajamas for a week, regular clothes, all the necessities. He brought her bag back out to her, sat it of the floor next to the sofa. While they waited for Noah. He lifted Olivia's legs and sat under them. "When you want to come clean this stuff up?"
"I don't know. Not this week at least." She answered. "You ever thought about moving in with me?" He asked.
"I have thought about..."
"And..."
"Whenever you ask I'll give you an answer."
"Fair enough." He was sure that he wanted them to move in with him but he wasn't sure about how she felt about it. Since they are taking it somewhat slow. "I'm ready guys!"
"Okay Noah. Edgar can you give me my slippers. Thank you!" They dropped Noah off at school went back to Edgar's for a while, to cuddle. Edgar made her comfortable first. Sat some pillows up for her so she could sit up. Then he laid on her stomach, wrapped his arms around her body. She ran her finger through his hair while she watch some tv. "Baby?" Olivia asked. "Yes?"
"Sometime next month or spring break for Noah I wanna go somewhere warm with Noah. Do you want to go?" He look up and her boobs caught him off guard, it look like she went up a cup size. She was pregnant but he didn't know that. "Edgar! Edgar!" He snapped out of it. "I'm sorry what was your question?"
"Do you want to go on spring break with Noah and I?"
"Sure." He kissed her stomach. "I love you baby." And laid his head back down. Olivia heart stopped. How did he know? Does he actually know or not? "How'd you know?"
"How'd I know what?"
"Never mind." He meant baby as in Olivia. That's just what he calls her. "What?"
"I said never mind." He thought about what he did and said for a second. Baby, kissed stomach, bigger boobs... "oh shit!" He said that too loudly. "What?"
"Oh, nothing, I- I ain't say nothing. Never mind." 'She pregnant!' Was all he thought about. He didn't want to force her to tell him. He figured she'd tell him when she is ready to be happy about it. On the outside he was super calm but in the inside he was dancing, hopping around... he had another chance at having a baby!
For the rest of the day Olivia rested, while Edgar and Noah hung out at the house playing video games. And for the rest of the week it all went by smoothly and fast. Everything in Edgar's life was almost perfect, the only thing is Olivia isn't he wife yet, but will come on it's own time...
