Hanging in the air, far above blue skies that were slightly cloudy, farther than the near depths of space sat the golden, brightly burning sun. Its bright rays shined down upon the planet Earth, and down upon a pair of two unlikely travelers.
Standing at the edge of a river, dressed in nothing but his underwear was our white spiky-haired young hero, staring down the water as if it owed him money.
Standing next to him and scratching the side of his head was Crimson. "Hiro, you sure you got this? I probably have something in my ca-"
"No I got it! I'm gonna show this slippery bastard who's boss!" The boy stated with determination.
His entire life he had a long-standing war going on with the creatures of the water. He wanted to eat them and they weren't exactly a fan of that idea.
Hiro slowly shifted his feet, getting into a crouched position. After a crucial moment, he jumped through the air, diving into the water and completely submerging himself to the point where he couldn't be seen.
A minute had passed and the boy still wasn't above water. Now the older boy was starting to fear the worst. "Oh come on don't tell me there's something down there!" Crimson groaned as he moved closer towards the water. What if the boy had hit his head down there? Or worse...what if there was an evil spirit who gobbled up stupid fish thieves?
Right as he peeked over into it, Hiro burst through the surface causing the redhead to let out a scream.
"Hahahahaha!" Laughing at the other, Hiro climbed out of the water with a grin on his face, and in his arms was a large fish, one bigger than either of the two.
Evil fish spirit zero, Hiro one.
"I swear if you keep giving me heart attacks I'm going to need medication!"
"My bad my bad." The younger said with a small laugh, keeping the supersized fish secure over his shoulder.
Crimson let out a sigh and shook his head, but his expression was quickly replaced with a more in awe one. "I don't think I'm ever going to get used to how strong you are Hiro! You're lugging around that thing like it's nothing."
With a proud look on his face, the mountain dweller rubbed the back of his head. "Anyone gets super strength when it comes to breakfast! Now come on let's go and cook this thing!"
Crimson and Hiro had been officially traveling with one another for two days. It didn't take the two of them long to get off of the mountain and since then the two had been making their way through the great forests surrounding it.
Hidei hadn't just decided to settle into any mountain, no he picked one that was a good ways away from any piece of civilization or any noticeable piece at least.
Now the young man and the boy were sitting around their camp on logs that Hiro had brought down, a trick he learned from his father figure while they waited for their food to cook.
"Hey Crimson," The boy suddenly stared from his side of the camp. "I don't really know a lot about you do I?"
The redhead brought a hand up to his chin, mulling over that comment.
During their two days while they had both had their fair share of idle chit chat there was nothing really of substance regarding themselves.
"Hmmmmm. I suppose not! I think that's a record for me, my parents used to always say I talk a lot." He admitted with a sheepish laugh. "But I'm an open book!" He said, clasping his hands together.
"What would you like to know?"
"Uhhh...oh tell me where you're from!
With a grin creeping on his face, Crimson shot up from his seat on the log, dramatically waving his arm across the air and propping one foot up upon the wooden object in front of him. "Then I shall gladly tell you the tale of Crimson Howell's origins!"
Apparently the redhead relished at the opportunity to talk about himself. If you stared hard enough you could see sparkles in his eyes.
Hiro crossed his legs, watching the other in excitement, ready to hear his story.
"You see my parents worked for a traveling circus!" The images of a red-haired woman and a brown-haired man came to his mind.
Hiro's hand shot up. "Hey what's a circus?"
Crimson chuckled a little. "Oh yeah, I forgot you've never been off the mountain. A circus is like a place where people go to be entertained. There are all types of things that performers do to entertain the crowd! Tame lions and perform tricks with them, breathe fire, do dances, and all sorts of things!"
"That sounds pretty awesome!"
"It really is. My father was the man behind it all, making sure the contraptions worked properly, making a machine blow snow if needed, anything you could imagine he could make happen!"
If Crimson had gotten his technological thumb from anyone, it was that man himself. When he was a young boy it was always incredible to see how he made things work.
"And my mom, my mom was a Trapeze Artist. A trapeze artist is someone who hangs in the air and does these amazing tricks, she would flip through the air, do twists and turns that you didn't think possible! She was the best!"
Out of all the things that their successful circus had to offer, she was the main attraction. The red-haired beauty with skills with the gracefulness of an air goddess.
"And I," He completely stepped onto the log, crouching down and jumping into the air, twisting his body and landing gracefully next to the fire. "Was her number one protege!
"Oh wow! So you're kind of like a martial artist then?" Hiro asked curiously, tilting his head. He hadn't expected Crimson to be much a fighter but that flip was indeed skilled and said the least.
The male laughed lightly and shook his head. "No, I've never had any training in that type of fighting, however," He walked over to his things and picked up the sheathed cane he usually wore across his back. "But I have had a bit of swords training. Though I really wouldn't want to kill anybody so I use a cane instead."
"...Don't you have those explosive thingies though?"
"I-that's beside the point! Anyways back to the story!" He quickly huffed, letting the cane rest on his shoulder as he walked around, unable to keep his movements halted.
The mountain dweller snickered at the other, but excitedly awaited the rest of the story.
"So for years and years, I traveled with my parents, seeing all kinds of places and faces! And not to toot my own horn by the crowd totally loved me." He bragged while rubbing a finger under his nose.
Eventually, he spun his cane around and then pressed it into the ground so he could lean on it. "But like all good things it came to an end. Our family finally settled down, ending our circus career."
It was a bittersweet memory. It was the end of the life that he had known for every one of his breathes on this Earth in the favor of something that was considerably more mundane than the circus.
"In all honesty that's why I'm traveling now." The redhead admitted. "I loved traveling a lot and it's been years since I've gotten to make new memories like those!"
A nod was given to him because the boy could understand the sentiment. Sure he had never explored before but he had always wanted to. Hidei had always told him that he would let him go when the time was right but it was always never the time.
Part of him wondered if it was never time because Hidei was worried about the people out to get him.
"So you really don't have any destinations in mind?"
Crimson shook his head, smiling. "Nope, I'm just letting what happens happen. And guess what, I've already met you so I think that philosophy is going pretty well already."
Hiro returned the other's smile with a grin of his own. "Yeah, I am pretty awesome! But you have to take me to one of those circuses one day, they sound cool!"
Crimson walked back over to the tree his stuff was near and resheathed his cane, turning around swiftly he held two fingers up. "You bet I will, scouts honor!"
With that being confirmed Hiro hopped up to his feet and turned to the fish. "Now let's eat I'm starving!"
Meanwhile, Elsewhere on Earth:
Large footsteps could be heard echoing through the halls of a building. Yet one look outside of this building would tell you that this wasn't just your average place. It was some type of palace, one where you would imagine royalty to live in.
The palace wasn't the end to the place, no, surrounding the palace itself seemed to be great big walls and a compound. Many people must take residence here.
Upon turning a corner into a hall full of sunlight, it was clear that the sound of footsteps belonged to none other than a familiar cloaked figure, the Beastman Rath.
His yellow slit eyes never left the front of him as he moved to one particular destination. A set of double doors guarded by two men in similar cloaks, albeit more smooth and less tattered than the tall man's.
Upon Rath getting close enough, the two opened the doors to reveal a room. It was a bit wide area, likely an office that had been converted into a mage's workshop.
Upon his entering of the room, the doors shut behind Rath. He made his way towards the center of the room and fell to a knee, his head down and eyes closed. "Lord Mamun...It is done."
Nothing but silence filled the air for what felt like an eternity. But finally, words came to fruition, "I see." The voice was calm and cool as the air that occupied the room.
Standing near a window with his hands behind his back was a fair-skinned man. He dressed in fine black robes with straight combed hair to match the color. His brown orbs stared out into the distance through a window, never turning to face Rath. "Where had Hidei been stowed away this whole time?"
"...He had been living away in the mountains far from civilization."
Lord Mamun simply hummed at that artifact of information. "Do you have Quarrels with what I asked you to do? Traitor or not, Hidei was your greatest friend for a time, Rath."
"He was a traitor who coerced the vessel to escape and had no mind to our righteous path. He deserved no more than death." Rath kept his reply short and simple, leaving no room to believe he didn't mean every word.
"Very well. What of the hunt for those failures I call children."
"They have not been found yet but we believe we have a trail. It won't be long before we have found them, just as we did with Hidei."
A deep breath escaped the man's lips. His gaze fixated on the buildings below and around. "10 years. They have halted the rebirth for 10 years...They will pay for this grievous insult to our mission. Find them and capture them by any means possible."
Rath finally opened his eyes and gave the man a nod. "Yes Lord." He rose to his feet and began to turn to the door.
"Before I forget. What of the dragon balls. Have you confirmed their existence?"
The Beastman turned back to the male. "This would be considered the good news. We have had confirmed their existence. The team I have dedicated to their retrieval already have two of them."
A smirk crept onto Mamun's face. "Excellent. You know your tasks, don't disappoint me."
"Lord." Rath gave the man a final nod before exiting the room like he previously intended to.
At the sound of the doors closing behind him, Mamun closed his eyes.
"He will rise one way or another...My children, you cannot run forever. No one can stand in the way of destiny, no one."
The red and white-haired duo had long since finished their large breakfast and resumed their trip on the road.
Another thing Crimson was never going to get used to was just how much the mountain boy could eat. The majority of that huge fish had gone to him and he devoured it like he was starving. God must-have blessed him with the fastest metabolism known to man.
Crimson was walking with a hand over his own shoulder, carrying his case of gadgets and whatnot while his eyes were watching quite the hilarious sight, one that put one of his usual smiles on his face.
Hiro had taken inspiration from those stories from home that the older male had told him and proceeded to walk down the road on his hands, laughing the whole way.
"Aha!" He yelled out triumphantly, "This what the Trapani Artist do right?"
"Trapeze."
"Oh right, Trapeze Artist. Just get me some rope to hang off of and I bed I could wipe the floor at any other-" Almost as if karma was listening in, the boy lost his balance and tumbled forward, landing right on his back.
Crimson stopped, looking down at him with a little concern. "You alright Hiro?"
There was silence from the snow-haired boy for quite some time, until finally, a groan came from him. "Stupid damn wind." He grumbled, causing Crimson to burst out into laughter.
Unsurprisingly, the other laughing at his shortcomings had stoked a fire into the boy and he hopped to his feet. "Oh what are you laughing at honorary geezer!"
If the acrobat had been drinking something he certainly would have choked. "Geezer? I'm 18, I don't even look old!" Now he was digging around in his pockets searching for a mirror, Hiro obviously had no idea what he was talking about. Crimson was the picture of youth...right?
With a satisfied smirk, Hiro crossed his arms and looked away. "Says the guy with a cane on his back." That would show him.
Though when he turned his head, Hiro had finally noticed something. They had made it out of the forest. The road had ended and the only thing in front of them was a hill.
They must have been occupied with their antics to even notice they had just broke the treeline.
"Hey, we made it out! I thought that forest was never going to end." If it weren't for Hidei telling him about different places he would have thought the whole world consisted of mountains and forests.
Crimson stopped his panicking and turned to the grass hill as well. "Yeah it's good to be outta that forest. It was huge, not to mention ominous."
Besides the fish they had been eating, the two hadn't come across any animals. Hmm, maybe they had just gotten lucky.
He picked up his suitcase, slinging it over his shoulder once again. "Come on let's head up to the top, we should scout the area from up here before going around."
Hiro nodded, a grin finding itself upon his face. "Race ya' up there!" Without giving him any time to prepare, Hiro took off running with a laugh.
"You cheater!" Crimson yelled with a grin of his own, running after the boy.
The two of them made their way up the large, green hill, not stopping until they were at the tip of the top. Hiro slid to a stop at the top of it, eyes widening as they finally landed on the sight before him.
The area was...so open. Wide, open fields of grass and flowery terrain as far as the eye could see. Hills and small mountains scattered amongst the place, no trees obscuring your vision. Even the setting sun seemed to shine even brighter than it usually did. It was like someone took one of those clearings on the mountain and supersized it, getting this in result.
Crimson walked up beside his younger counterpart, looking at him out the corner of his eye, smiling. He was happy for him.
It sounded like Hiro had a good life, like he was raised by a good father figure, but he couldn't imagine never being able to see anything other than the same place or person. By the time he was the little martial artist's age he had seen more places and people than he could even bother trying to remember. They sort of had polar opposite upbringing's.
This truly must have been one hell of an experience for him.
The redhead gave the mesmerized kid a pat on the shoulder, "A lot different than the mountain isn't it?"
He nodded lightly, "It's so...beautiful." Hiro said, finally finding the words to use. "Hidei told me a lot about places whenever I asked, but it looks so much better in person."
The world must be one beautiful place. The view was better than his most vivid imaginations.
"This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of beautiful places out there...and some ugly ones." He said with a small laugh, squinting his eyes as is eyes passed over something that was in the distance.
For the first time, Hiro parted his eyes from the terrain to looked over to the taller. "You see something?" He received a nod in response and followed the hand that was pointed out into the distance. He followed in the direction the hand was pointing in and saw what exactly Crimson had seen.
On the horizon, far in the distance was the beginning of a cluster of buildings. That road must have been formed with a place in mind after all.
"Is that a city?" Hiro could already feel the excitement washing over him. When his smut reading caretaker told him about places, cities always sounded like the best place to be. He was told that there were thousands of people and places like their house and all kinds of places where you can eat and do fun stuff.
"Not a city but you're close! It looks like a village, it's kind of like a city but way smaller. But we should be able to stock up on supplies, and I'm sure we could meet a lot of new people!"
"Then what are we waiting for? I can hear it calling my name!" Hiro leaped into the air, yelling out in excitement as he landed on the slope and slid down the hill, no longer able to contain his excitement. He just had to go and see what this village was like.
This time the tattooed male was more ready for the younger's antics. "You're not leaving me behind this time."
The duo made it to the bottom of the hill and set off running, their laughs in the wind as they raced one another across the grass plains.
Crimson and Hiro had did exactly what they had set off to do, which was race fifteen minutes straight all the way to the outskirts of the village. What was the result?
The older was currently hunched over on his hands and needs, breathing as if someone had knocked the air out of his chest. "How...are...you not...tired." He wheezed out.
Hiro simply grinned at him and gave him a thumbs up. "Push ups, sits ups, and plenty of juice!"
He just responded with a groan, taking his precious time to regain his breathe.
After a couple of minutes Crimson took a deep breathe and rose back up to his feet, wiping some sweat off of his brow. "Okay, either you're a freak of nature or I need to get back in shape. I'm going to vote on the former for this one."
Hiro waved him off and turned his attention to the village. Something was off about it, something even he could tell. "How come some of their houses are broken?"
Oddly enough a majority of the buildings in front of them were damaged in some type of way. Walls and roofs broken down, glass shattered, doors ajar. In addition to the weird state of the structures, there wasn't a single soul out on the streets at least on this road.
"No idea, it looks like a damn hurricane ran through this place." The other commented as they began walking through the village.
One thing they learned was that the village was bigger than it appeared from a distance, but the situation didn't seem to better itself as they explored. Every other building was in the saw shape as the last, objects from homes somehow littered the streets as well as debris, but the one thing that confirmed something bad was going on were drops, puddles, splashes of blood over the place.
"Good lord," Crimson muttered as the two of them stepped into what was likely the village square.
Hiro crouched down near one of the puddles of blood. "Something really bad happened here." He said, stating the obvious but it needed to be said. What happened to this place, to the people who were here?
With such a creepy state of things, and now that the sun had come down, maybe they needed to get out of dodge.
Suddenly a melody began playing that caught the attention of the two travelers.
"You hear that music Crimson?"
"Yeah, I hear it too. Nice to know I'm not going crazy, we should probably get out of he-"
A low growl entered the air that made the inventor stop talking. In the dark shadows of one building, a pair of slit red eyes appeared, staring them both down. And then another pair appeared in a separate building. And then another, then another, until they were completely surrounded by almost a dozen pairs of primal eyes.
"There goes all the animals." The boy muttered, his own eyes scanning the area.
Crimson gulped, "And this is why I hate the dark." He slowly reached for his cane but even his ever so slight movements were enough to set one of their stalkers off.
From the shadows and into the moonlight leaped a grey-furred wolf, one that looked far from normal. It was decently bigger than what you'd expect from your average large dog-sized wolf, but the most peculiar thing about it was a light black and purple aura around it.
Right before it could reach sink its fangs into Crimson's face, Hiro had jumped from his spot and kicked the creature in the side, sending it crashing into one of the broken down buildings. "Okay call me crazy but that might be a kinda angry wolf!"
"Yup, kind of figured that one!" Crimson pulled out his staff, not forgetting about the rest of their company. "They must be what happened to the village, we need to take them out!"
Hiro grinned and got into a fighting stance, putting his fists up and bouncing up and down lightly. "I really like that plan."
As if on cue, the rest of the strange wolves began their assault, leaping out of the shadows to attack the two. One ran full speed at Hiro and jumped into the air, snapping at his head only for the young fighter to duck underneath and grab it by its tail as it flew overhead. He spun it around and smashed it into a second oncoming wolf, sending the tumbling off to the side with a cry of victory.
Finally able to show off his cane skills, Crimson spun the item around before gripping it by the curve and smacking a wolf across the face with it like it was a sword. Quickly he turned around and jumped out of the way of a set of jaws snapping at him.
He rolled back to his feet turning to the wolf that had been dead set on seeing if his blood was as red as his hair. Kr charged him and once it as close enough he thrusted his cane down at it, pressing a button that sent a blue light through the object before a bright electrical shock came out of the tip and shocked the wolf in its place.
Hiro spun around, sending a roundhouse kick into the side of a charging wolf. As he and Crimson got ready to deal with the few remaining wolves, suddenly the music from earlier began playing again. The creatures immediately turned tail and ran off into the distance, disappearing shortly.
Hiro rubbed the back of his head, a look of confusion on his face. "Sooooooo, did we win? I don't know if this is a win or not."
"Well, we didn't get eaten alive so that's something." Crimson slid his cane back into the sheathe on his back. He walked over and picked up his suitcase. "This music has something to do with all of this, we need to fin-"
Something from a ways away slammed into the ground causing the ground to shake. The duo snapped their heads down the street they came from, where the thudding originated. There were more thuds that shook the earth and every thud got louder and louder, closer and closer until the thing turned the corner.
There stood a giant T Rex, taller than any of the houses around. Just like the wolves, its eyes were red and it had the same ominous glow to it.
"Oh come on, why do all the monsters come when I'm talking!?" It let out a monstrous roar in response to the redhead's whining.
"Hey remember when I said I punch things really really hard? Well, I don't know if I can punch that hard enough, so let's go!" Hiro took off running once again but Crimson this time was one step ahead of him.
The dinosaur let out another terrifying roar and it began running after them.
There had to be nothing worse in the world than being chased by a creature that could literally shake the ground every time it walked. They could feel it getting closer and closer as they turned corners trying to lose their pursuer.
"Right here!" Crimson slid to a stop and ducked into a dark alleyway, dragging in Hiro with him. The two pressed up against the walls, trying to catch their breathes.
Hiro shot a glare at the tall man. "You said nothing about villages having dinosaurs you mad man!" He silently hissed.
"They normally don't!" Crimson hissed back in return. "How was I supposed to know that this one did!?"
"I don't know Trapeze senses!?"
"That's not even a thing!"
"Well, it should be!"
The two would have continued their bickering but a raindrop fell between them. It was strange considering how bit the raindrop looked, not to mention it was kind of smelly...Wait a minute.
The adventurers slowly looked up, hoping for a forecast of smelly super rain but they got a dinosaur grinning down at them.
Crimson slowly gulped again. "H-hey their bud-"
The dinosaur roared which caused the hair on their heads to blow as if they were in the middle of a windy storm. "Run!"
Right as the dinosaur lifted its foot the two ran out of the alleyway, back onto the street. The large reptilian foot smashed into the walls of the two buildings crumbling it. It watched as the humans ran ahead of it and resumed its chase of the two.
"Dammit Crimson stop taking to the animals they don't like you!"
"Shut up, the circus animals like me!"
The two were ducking and dodging through the streets, flipping over debris trying to lose the monster with absolutely no luck. It was fast and persistent, completely intending for them to join the contents of its stomach acids.
Crimson looked back at the raging dinosaur, trying to formulate some type of way to lose it but that wasn't going to be an option with how it was currently. "We need to buy some time!"
The boy flipped over a broken-down cart. "How? We can't lose it and we can't kill it either!" If they were to go into the plains, they would have a lot less to duck and dodge behind, it would catch them a lot quicker in a straight shot race.
"We don't need to kill it! Do you think you can knock it over?"
Hiro thought it over for a moment before giving him a nod. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I can!"
"Then do it, I'll handle the rest!"
Hiro glanced back at the dinosaur, needing to quickly think over how he was going to execute hid part of the plan. Almost as if he was looking over him, a memory of a lesson with Hidei plagued his mind. Suddenly the boy turned and jumped towards a building wall.
"Everybody bastard, He turned in the air so he landed on the wall feet first and then used it to propel himself off of it, right towards the dinosaur. Once again he twisted so he was flying towards it feet first, "Has a weak spot!" He smashed into its ankle, his force and the dinosaur's own momentum sent it crashing into the ground.
Hearing this, the inventor slid to a stop and opened up his case. "Get out of the way!" As the spiky-haired powerhouse jumped out of the way, Crimson pulled out four explosive shurikens. "Take some mints you dirty breathed lizard!" He threw them all at once and on the impact they exploded on the dinosaur, causing it to roar out in pain.
"Alright!" Hiro exclaimed as he landed next to his travel companion. "Serves the big bastard right!"
Crimson couldn't help but smirk at his own handiwork, but even through the smoke that had been created from the explosion, they could still see movements from the empowered creature. "We should get going, it's not gonna stay down forever."
"Hey, you two!"
The two blinked in confusion at the sound of a voice and turned around.
The one who had called to them was a blonde-haired young lady in a green dress, waving over at the two of them. "If you want to get to safety follow me!"
"You want to pop up after we finish fighting the dangerous dinosaur? Oh, that's not suspicious at all." The redhead grumbled, narrowing his eyes.
She put her hands on her hip, looking past the two of them to the dinosaur. "Alright suit yourselves, byeeeee!" She turned and took off running.
Behind them, the dinosaur began to slowly rise from the ground. Hiro clapped, "Live now ask questions later! I'm sure it'll be fine!" He said and took off after the girl. Whoever she was, whatever she had in store for them couldn't have been worse than getting eaten by a dinosaur.
"Dammit wait for me!" The inventor shouted, running after the two of them.
The girl led them through the streets to one part of the village they hadn't been to. The buildings seemed as destroyed as the other one but one seemed mostly intact. A large town hall-like structure pressed up against one of the larger mountains. Inside of doing inside, they went around to the side of it, to a set of stairs that led down to a basement-type area.
The basement was lit by torches among the wall but was only a singular room, however just like the building it was connected to the mountain and there was a big opening in the stone.
"There's a cave down here?" Hiro questioned as the girl led them inside of it.
"Mhm, this is where we've been hiding to escape the possessed creatures of the wilderness that have been attacking our home." The girl explained with one of the torches in her hand.
Crimson let out a sigh of relief. "So you're not all dead. That's good to hear, we were thinking the worse when we saw all the destruction up top."
The girl smiled lightly. "Yes most of us managed to retreat to safety. It's very kind of you to have our safety in mind when you don't know us," The three reached a large open space in the cave system, filled with numerous tents and what must have been hundreds of people roaming about. "So that makes me feel a tad bit bad about this."
Suddenly from the sides of the entrance, numerous men and women with spears jumped out, surrounding the two with their weapons pointed at the boys.
"Crap baskets." The boy muttered.
Crimson dropped his suitcase with a groan, putting his hands up. "Oh, but I thought it was going to be a-okay." He stated sarcastically to the other male.
Hiro followed his lead and put his hands up as well.
"Hey I'm literally 12, that's my excuse."
"Oh, now you play the child!?"
"...I plead the fifth."
"Do you even know what that means?"
"Nope, read it in a book once though."
"Stab him first please."
