Chapter 35: Gender Reveal
(Narrator POV)
Four weeks later, Fin was released from the hospital and in physical therapy to help him back to work sooner. Edgar started his new job and the relationship with his team and himself clicked instantly. They welcomed him with open arms and the rest of coaching staff couldn't have made his transition better.
Olivia was back home happy and healthy. They had their latest appointment which told them the gender of their babies. Of course, in true fashion La'Mai and Morgan wanted to throw them a gender reveal party. Olivia and Edgar decided that their shoes would tell the gender they think the babies are gonna be. And that goes for everyone coming to the party too. Olivia will be wearing an all white cold shoulder dress with a pair of blue heels for two boys and Edgar will be wearing a white button up with jeans with one blue shoe and one pink shoes. For a boy and a girl. And Noah will be wear two pink converse with a baby pink button up.
"Mom! Uncle Kevin and Aunt Morgan are here!" Noah yelled from the living room. Edgar was trying to let Olivia sleep a little bit longer than usual. Luckily she didn't wake up, he hurried out the room to get the door. "Did you forget that quick that we were letting mom sleep in today?"
"Oops!" He giggled. He let his family sister in not realizing that his parents would be arriving at the same time. He still hadn't told them about his new job, and was kind of nervous about it. His team would be at the party tonight. "Mom, Dad." He said awkwardly. Everyone was entering in a very loud manner which would definitely disturb Olivia's rest. "Everyone please quiet down people are still trying to sleep."
"Right, Edgar can we start setting up, we only have four hours before everyone starts to arrive."
"Yes but only set up outside. Let's wait until Olivia wakes up." Olivia came out the room all discombobulated obviously still half asleep. Her hair was up in rollers and she was in Edgar tshirt not knowing his parents were here. "Good morning, I am so tired." She yawned.
"Olivia, good morning dear." Dianne spoke.
"Oh my gosh!" She was so embarrassed. "Uhhh, hi guys I'm gonna- I'm gonna go back in the room. Edgar a moment." He followed. "So you weren't gonna warn me that you parents would be her before I woke up. Do you see what I look like right now? You already said that they are very judgement all and we both know your mom doesn't fully like me yet." She whispered yelled at him
"I think you look cute. And who cares they came to our home and so they deal with it. But really, you look cute."
"You're annoying." She laughed. "I'm gonna lay back down. I'm so tired."
"Alright. You want some decaf or something?"
"Yeah can you use the Carmel creamer, please?"
"Yes, ma'am." His family had like disappeared. He figured that the kids ran off with each other and assumed his sister was outside setting up waiting for La'Mai. He hurried with Olivia's drink, got it to her quickly, then went outside. Weather breezy perfect for today, the sun was shining beautifully, Edgar couldn't wait to find out the genders.
Hours had gone by and before you knew it the party had started. But Olivia still wasn't ready. "Baby, what is taking you so long?"
"I'm almost done, I just have to comb out my hair. I'll be out there in a minute."
"Okay, hurry up. People don't care about me
At this kind of party, you're kind of the centerpiece."
"Okay, okay I'm coming." She quickly combed out her curls and slipped her heels on. Edgar took Olivia's hand and they went out to the backyard. Immediately Olivia was swarmed by her friends. Edgar drifted away to sit with his friends. Looking at Olivia, all Edgar could think is that she is the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on. The way he dress showed off her curves and her much bigger bump. He absolutely adored her. A few minutes later his basketball team started rolling in. They probably rode together that's why they were was around the same time. He could see his mom moving over to them. He hurried over there. "Sup coach." Edgar cursed to himself.
"Coach?" His mom questioned the boy. "What does he mean by 'coach' Edgar?"
"We should talk about this later, Mom." He said quietly. Not wanting to cause a scene in front of guests and surely not Olivia. Dianne tried to talk but Edgar told her to leave it alone. But she obviously wasn't gonna listen.
"No, Edgar we can talk right now. So answer my question." Her voice was raising causing attention to herself.
"Mom!" He thought about it for a minute. "I'm not doing this right now." Olivia looked over to them wondered what they were talking about. He was clearly frustrated so she went over to save him from his mother. "Honey, can you come here? I need help with something."
"Yeah we were just done talking." The tension between them was strong and awkward for anyone around them. He followed her inside the house where the was more people. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to- I'm just sorry."
"For what?"
"Whatever happens by the time this party is over and my parents are gone. My mom and I, I'm sure are gonna have it out by the end of the day and whatever happens I'm sorry. It won't change anything with us or anything of the nature. I am just sorry for what she gonna say."
"Don't worry about me. You really need to talk to your mom though. I don't want you to lose the relationship with your mom over anything. She's an important part of your life and I would hate for that all just to go away over a job, me-"
"You? What are you saying? You're just ready to leave me just cause my mom doesn't want you around?"
"No Edgar not like that. I meant you guys need to have a discussion about our relationship so she can get that around her head. I really don't give a damn what she thinks of me, it won't push me away us."
"Oh okay. Had me scared there for a second. But come on we have food to eat, and people to meet." They walked back out to the backyard.
"You're finally gonna introduce me to the team. Took you long enough. You talk about them all the time." Noah came barreling towards them and Olivia picked him up. He what to whisper in Olivia's ear about something.
"Well it's not like I've had much opportunity."
They approached the team while they were eating some tacos. "What's up guys!"
"Sup coach! You must be Mrs. Goodwin." Davion; the best player on the team, but also the youngest spoke.
"Mhmm not quite, just call me Olivia."
"This is Olivia, my girlfriend. And this is Noah, her son." Edgar introduced his family.
Noah waved. "All of you think the babies are boys? I am like the only person who thinks we are having a girl and a boy. I'll tell you what, if you guys are right no sprints for two days next week.
"Bet. I guess we ain't running." They erupted with laughter the boys were super confident. "But on a serious note, congratulations on the babies."
"Thanks!"
"Nice to meet you guys." They turned and walked away and Edgar could her the boys talking about Olivia. He turned around back to their table. "Stop hitting on my girlfriend."
"We aren't hitting on her we just said she was pretty." One of them tried to explain.
"I think the word you use was fine. I only call her fine."
"Hey at least she ain't ugly." They all agreed on that.
"Whatever." Just moments later Morgan was gathering everyone to reveal the gender of the babies. The majority of the party said she was having two girls, Ulrich, Olivia, and the team were the only ones who thought she was having two boys. And Morgan, Edgar, Steve, and Dianna thought she was having a girl and a boy. Edgar and Olivia both have a box to open and it will tell the genders of both babies. "On the count of three open your Olivia box. 1...2...3!"
Big gold balloons said boy. So far both parents were right. "Okay Edgar open your box." The next box balloons said boy. Two boys even though Edgar was wrong he was very excited about his two baby boys. "I told you! We're having two boys, honey!" Edgar embraced his girlfriend. The team went crazy when they that it was two boys. No sprints. They started taking pictures with friends and family. Even the team took a huge group photo.
After the party Dianne disappeared, everyone assumed she went to bed. Edgar knew there was no way that she went to sleep before talking to him. All Edgar wanted to do was change out of his clothes and cuddle up with Olivia. "Dad where's mom?"
"I think she went upstairs. I'll go get her."
"Okay." He went into the bedroom to get Olivia. Once everyone was gathered into the living room and the children were down for a nap, they sat down to have a much needed conversation. "So Edgar what do you want to tell me?" Dianne's voice was full of attitude.
"Mom, I quit my job and I am a high school boys basketball coach." Gasped filled the air. "And before you say anything, I made this decision because I'm miserable working as a lawyer. And I don't regret it at all."
"Why? Do you do all these things just to purposely infuriate me?"
"All what things mom! I made a decision that I should've made in the first place. But I didn't because you guilt shamed me into it. I'm so tired of living for you!" Olivia you placed her hand in his forearm to quietly calm him down.
"I can list a million things, well one moving all the way to New York City, quitting your job to be some basketball coach, and maybe, I don't know getting some woman pregnant before marriage or even before I met her. Do you even really know who she is! You and your sister. She ruined her life and you are ruining your!"
"Excuse me!" Morgan interjected. "What do I have to do with all of this! This is none of my business, your issue right now is Edgar. Don't put my name in this. I am only here to back Edgar because I know you would never listen to him and Dad doesn't have the balls to say anything to you!"
"Don't ever speak that way about Olivia. You say what you want about me, but don't you ever talk that way about her again. Mom, I've tried to take your guilt shaming and ignorance for long enough. I have had it! I'm living my life the way I want. I've let you waste my life for years but I'm over it. I've found the woman I want, and that's all I need. I don't need your constant condescending attitude towards us anymore. So Mom you can make the decision right now are you gonna accept me and Olivia, and stop treat us the way that you do. Or you can leave right now and never talk to me until you are ready to accept those things. Which on is it gonna be?"
"Son-"
"No Dad! I'm asking mom! Which one is it gonna be?"
"Edgar you don't really mean that-" Dianne tried to turn the table as if she was the victim.
"Yes I do! I'm so serious, because I am damn tired of the mistreatment towards Olivia."
"I guess we're done here."
"Fine, get out of my house."
"Edgar I think your being a but over dramatic." Ulrich finally got out a whole statement.
"I'm not being over dramatic. I have put up her and all of her shit all the time. I am sick and tired of letting her criticize and scrutinize Olivia. She makes Olivia feel uncomfortable in her own house. Okay okay let's put this in perspective Dad if your mom constantly said that you're ruining your life by marrying mom and saying that she a whore. How would you feel about that? Huh! You always say that mom was the one for you and look how far you've gotten in your marriage. Olivia is my one. And I feel that mom is pushing her away from me every chance she getting because she knows that Olivia is willing to sacrifice her happiness for someone else's because she a good person! I'm done trying to explain myself to you mom. I want you out here of my house, now!"
"You're gonna give me and everything up for some woman?"
"Olivia! Mom, her name his Olivia!"
"I've done everything for you I made you the person you are today."
"No, you've made me the shell of someone I could be! Someone I've wanted to be for so long. And I'm willing to give up everything I own for Olivia!"
"Well Edgar if that's what you're gonna stick with then I guess there's nothing left to say."
"That is what I'm sticking with and if you can't understand that then the only thing left to do is you apologize to Olivia."
"I have nothing to say to that bitch." With that being said Olivia got up and walked away to the bedroom. She could feel her stress rising in her and her doctor warned her about her stress and the harm it could cause to the babies. There's only so much someone can take when being torn apart like that. Usually Olivia can take that kind of thing but with her hormones flying of the walls today, she excused herself from the conversation. She locked the door behind her using her shut down mode as defense. She could hear Edgar yelling through the wall. "Are you happy now! Get out of my house and I'm serious this time. Get your shit and leave! How dare talk to her like that! Get out!" After Edgar's parents left Morgan and Kevin talked to him for a minute or two before the got Sasha and AJ. "Baby, open the door." He heard the lock click.
"I'm sorry, I just... I couldn't." Olivia cried.
"Look you have nothing to be sorry for. My mom is the one who has an issue with you. There's nothing you can do about that okay. I know it's tiring and stressful but you did what you could do. And if she doesn't want to accept you then I'm cool because then I'll have you and our baby boys, Noah. You guys are all I need. I love you."
"I love you too! Thank you for saying that."
"Anytime. Now let's get in bed. All I have wanted to do since the party ending was lay with you, talk to our baby boys, love on you, all of it." Even though the last 30 minutes were absolutely horrible it didn't take away all the good that happened earlier. For the rest of the day they stayed in and did everything Edgar wanted and Noah joined them after he woke up from his nap.
