After the Sorting Ceremony and the Welcoming Feast the prefects lead each of the houses to their respective common rooms and Draco and Hermione made their way to McGonagall's office. They both took a seat and McGonagall began to speak, "As I was telling you two before, we will be holding a number of balls this year. You will have to plan one for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter. You will also be responsible for making the schedule for prefect patrols. I am aware that you two have a long history with each other and I hope that you two can behave yourselves at set a good example for the rest of the students. You two are dismissed."

The two of them walked in complete silence as they made their way to the heads common room. Just as they made their way up the stairs to the 5th floor Draco broke the silence, "Listen Granger, I wanted to apologize for the way I've treated you all these years, and I don't want to spend the whole year fighting with you. We're going to be spending a lot of time together so we better learn to be friends" he stuck out his hand for her to shake "What do you say?"

She couldn't believe what was happening before her. Was Draco Malfoy actually being nice to her? She looked down at his outstretched hand and decided that he was right, they were going to be working closely together so they better learn to be nice to each other. "The name's Hermione, not Granger" she replied as she took his hand and shook it. They had finally arrived at the portrait to their common room. "Sugar Quills" Draco said and the painting swung up, he gestured for Hermione to enter first "Lady's first" he said with a smirk on his face. Hermione entered the room and took a look around.

Their common room was a large circular room, with a mix of Gryffindor and Slytherin colors. A large fireplace sat in the middle of the room opposite the entrance with a black couch sitting in front of it and two red armchairs to either side of the couch. On both sides of the room there was a staircase spiraling up the wall each with a door at the top. One had the words Head Girl in golden letters on the door and the other said Head Boy. Those must be our bedrooms Hermione thought to herself. There was also another door to the left of the fireplace, and that must be the bathroom. She shuddered at the thought of having to share a bathroom with Draco. He'll probably hog the bathroom for an hour just doing his hair each morning she thought with a smirk

Hermione and Draco both made their way to their respective rooms to start unpacking their things. As Hermione laid in bed that night she had a hard time falling asleep. Why does Draco all of a sudden want to act all nice and be friends she wondered to herself was it some kind of trick. She thought a lot about Draco and what his intentions were as she slowly began to drift off to sleep. At the same time, Draco lay awake in his bed. He had spent his entire life living in the shadow of his father, he was raised to believe that Muggle-borns were inferior to him and that they were dirty. He first began to question these beliefs when he first met Hermione Granger, how is it that Muggle-borns were seen as so inferior, and yet she was the smartest witch he had ever met. When his father was imprisoned in Azkaban during his 6th year he decided that he was no longer going to live the life his father had forced on him and he was going to become his own man. Starting by befriending one Hermione Granger. And with that he too drifted off to sleep.
