(A young charismatic young man is seen happily walking down the isle of a plane. He looks down at his ticket and comes to a sudden stop, nearly causing the man behind him to bump into him.)
Enthusiastic man: Oh sorry, sir.
Intercom: Attention, Passengers, our flight to Odessa will begin shortly. We ask that you please-
(In his enthusiasm, he realizes that he missed his seat and walks a few rows back. In his row, he sees a withdrawn looking man rapidly shaking his leg and starring out of the window. He's suddenly biting his nails and the world just becomes a big blur for a bit until the young man snaps him out of his daze.)
Enthusiastic Man: Excuse me. (Awkwardly waves to him) Hey, sir; you look nervous sitting by the window like that. Uh- we both are in this isle so if you'd like, we could switch seats? I mean, I know it might be breaking rules but- (Awkwardly laughs) Sorry.
(The man just stares at him, continuing to shake his leg and stare at the young man.)
Enthusiastic Man: (Swallows nervously and offers a hand shake to the man) We might not have anything to say to each other the entire flight over, but maybe a formal greeting would help make things a lot less awkward. I'm Joshua Jackson. It's an honor to meet you.
Isaac: (Gives a friendly nod and accepts his handshake) I'm Isaac.
Joshua: (regains his enthusiasm) Awesome; hello, Isaac; Excuse me just a second. (Secures his luggage in the top compartment then sits next to Isaac, followed by a de-stressing exhale) This is truly an amazing experience. Where are you headed? Are you going to visit- FAMILY? (Chuckles)
Isaac: No. I'm actually going to a facility. I've had a little issue with drugs recently and I'm flying out there to get some help.
Joshua: Drugs huh? Wow; well you're getting help now; that's all that matters, right? (Invasively taps Isaac on the shoulder twice) Sorry. I'm actually visiting FAMILY. It's strange because I never knew I had such a thing. You know people all the time mention their uh- dad and sisters and brothers twice removed an all that, but I've never had anyone to call those words.
Isaac: Well, I'm sorry.
Joshua: (Chuckles) Don't be, because for the first time ever in my existence, I get to feel this unbelievable sense of… excitement. It's like I'm entering a brave new world with this feeling, you know. It's truly amazing and if I had family, I never would've been able to experience this nostalgic sensation.
Isaac: Well, good for you, man. I hope that goes well for you.
Joshua: It will, because I'm choosing to make it go well. I'm going to make the best of this opportunity. I'm going out there to visit this girl they call a- uh- hold on- (Unwraps a sheet of paper) NIECE! Yeah! She's a cheerleader at Union Wells High School.
(He suddenly captures Isaac's attention.)
Joshua: She has an upcoming homecoming game and apparently it's a big deal. So, I want to share whatever happiness she feels doing- uh- cheerleading. So, yeah great times.
Isaac: (Nervously looks around to make sure no one's listening, then leans a little close to Joshua) Look, man, I'd skip the game tonight. Tell your niece not to show up cause something bad is going to happen.
Joshua: What?! Why would I do that? Hey, man, I don't want any disrespect, but I think the drugs might be getting to you now; you don't look all there right now.
Isaac: I'm fine, just feeling it… (Rubs his sweating hands together)
Joshua: You know often I wondered why people all the time would do drugs when you could get high on life like me! I took a class and learned about the psychological effects of drugs and I came to a conclusion that drugs only substitute brain activity that I feel every day of my life just being myself in every way possible. I guess people have depression and other problems mentally; therefore would need drugs, but none of that ever registered in my head.
Isaac: What, so you mean you've never felt sad before?
Joshua: Well, I suppose I have, yeah, but from a young age I never had anyone. I was taken in for adoption after being abandoned by my family. I just had this sweet old hippie couple who taught me the importance of life. They raised me in the woods and after teenage years, went out to the city when they passed on, but they never taught me mannerisms or proper social skills or discipline. They told me "Society hasn't gotten it right yet so why follow their structures of life?". That always stuck with me and they made sure I understood myself as a soul living on this earth in a human body. They made sure that what I was feeling inside was to be expressed, accepted and understood, not restructured or molded. They said the soul will always know what it needs, but human society will always dictate the potency that souls could be expressed. Respect for peoples' sacred space is important too, yes, but at the same time, society has built a structure upon itself that does not focus on the soul's needs and that the soul needs to be free.
Isaac: Wow, a hippie background; something the two of us have in common. I get you exactly.
Joshua: I thought it was a bad thing at first- seeing how divided and different people were, but we all have unique outlooks and experiences to life. I remember shopping and hearing a couple argue about how stupid the holidays were because of past disappointments. And I bumped in to tell them that the world has all these interesting holidays that offer unique experiences so use these holidays as a way to experience a new positive thing for yourself. I know I babble, I just don't get how people can hold on to so much that keeps their soul from being happy.
Isaac: Well. You never grew into any kind of pain. Like I mentioned in one of my comics, we grow into what we know and that becomes us. Many people experience a bad memory as a child and because it had such an impact on them, as they grew older, that memory became their world.
Joshua: A comic book writer? Wow! I like that. W-wait… you're Isaac Mendez!
Isaac: The one and only; right here.
Joshua: Wow! I remember seeing this comic cover with this huge dinosaur and something was just so- distracting about it. It really caught my attention.
Isaac: Uluru…
Joshua: Yeah, that's his name?!
Isaac: I remember drawing him when I was high.
(There is a sudden awkward moment of silence.)
Joshua: I remember the couple who raised me saying they used to do things like that. They claimed that the use of drugs, back then before they were processed and laced, was to elevate their mind and take it to places we couldn't get to on our own. But once they reached that destination, they knew what they had to work toward in order to get to that state at will or at lease live everyday life in that state. I was basically a perfect anti-social experiment for attempting to make a human being in a constant high state of mind through will, not physical external resource. (Smiles) Honestly, I'm glad they did.
Isaac: As strange as it sounds, I couldn't imagine living a perfect life. I think I'd go mad. (Turns to look out the window for a bit before turning to face Joshua again) How did they not get addicted, when they used I mean?
Joshua: Hmm? Oh, well like I said, they used it to ascend their minds and they respected it.
Isaac: I see… What's the craziest thing you've ever heard?
Joshua: Male seahorses give birth.
Isaac: I'll do you one better- (Pulls out a sketch book and flashes it to Joshua) All of these, or at lease most of them, have all come true. (Stops flipping and puts the sketchbook down) I believe I can draw the future. I know that sounds crazy but I do. I thought I was going crazy, but now I'm convinced I'm not crazy. But now I fear for the future.
Joshua: How so?
Isaac: I painted a mural of New York- (Whispers) Blowing up. And now I'm worried if it's going to happen.
Joshua: I'd say make a few comic books about the future and therefore time will work itself out and New York won't go boom.
Isaac: I don't know how to control it. Like I said, I've always been high when I've done it.
Joshua: Hm… My parents would say, relax your mind and respect it.
Isaac: You mean like respect my gift? You said your parents used the substance to ascend, but once they were in that state, they remembered it.
Joshua: If you want to kick a habit like this, you have to work with yourself; figure out why it has such a hold on you, but then you must realize no one's going to pull you out; you must be the one fully willing to change for the better of yourself. Find something to work toward and use that to help you sideline those unwanted feelings of temptation. But the most important thing is to will your way through it. You gotta have all chips in otherwise the payoff won't be worth the risk.
Isaac: Yeah… I guess that makes sense.
Joshua: But I'm more fascinated by the idea of talking to a real live artist! Like, that is the coolest thing, talking with someone who's made such a noticeable impact. In your comic books, how exactly do the characters get their abilities, is it a nuclear energy or something, aliens; (Goofy) government experiment (Chuckles)
Isaac: (Chuckles) No. Uh… I don't know really; it's just psychological I suppose. Each character started off sane like you or I, but quickly, they began to question their reality and listen to something within. (Looks up and down the aisle suspiciously) The key to unlocking their potential comes not only from listening within but embracing insanity. Knowing that these powers exist brings an entirely new meaning as opposed to having faith in the idea of insanity.
Joshua: So these characters- they started off crazy?
Isaac: They all had some kind of- deficiency and that deficiency was meant to help question what can be from what they feel no longer exists within them. How can a sociopath learn to love, how can someone with dyslexia become stronger in areas of the brain that non-dyslexic people thrive in, how can a psychopath understand healing of the human soul; and how can an isolated anti-social child, learn the value of human connection? It's all psychological.
Joshua: Insanity turned to power. (Laughs at that idea) That's the idea of faith.
Isaac: The more faith they have in themselves to evolve, the stronger their abilities, otherwise they limit themselves after each self discovery.
(Out of nowhere a pretty young woman with a short Bob haircut approaches the two of them.)
Woman: Okay, sorry; about that, Isaac; issues are all taken care of and- (Stops at the sight of Joshua's awkward friendly smile) Excuse me, sir, I believe that is my seat. (Flashes ticket) See. (Quickly pulls ticket back)
Joshua: Oh uh… (Flashes his ticket to her) Sarah?! Hey, Sarah Ellis! Joshua Jackson from high school- the few years of my life I actually did go to public school. (Chuckles)
Eden: (Annoyed) Sorry you've got the wrong person; my name's Eden and I'm a doctor. I'm currently with a patient right now and it is my responsibility to make sure my patient has no contact with people, so for the sake of my job, please just- (Says in a distorted deep voice) walk away and forget you ever saw me.
(Something eerie is in the air suddenly and she stares deep into the man's soul. Without a word, he stands to his feet and walks off toward the back of the plane. Eden sits beside Isaac and gives him a big smile) Hopefully he didn't do anything to temp you.
Isaac: No… no, he actually helped me- he gave me some good advice- all chips in or all chips out. I know I'm strong; I know I can do this. I'm ready to be clean.
Eden: (Stares him deep in his eyes wither her piercing ones) Even if that means not being able to use your gift anymore?
(Isaac is a bit conflicted by the question and is hesitant to give an answer.)
Isaac: Y-yes. (More confident) Yes, I want what's best for me.
Eden: (Cracks a gentle smile) We'll get you clean in no time. (Gently pinches his curly hair)
[Heroes- Created by Time Kring]
Narrator: Tides rise; storms calm, all in the name of change. Whether it be a celebration, a ceremony, ritualistic traditions, or even grief, all symbolize a new pathway in our lives. Embracing this pathway brings new self discovery, whether that be into the light or untamed corners of our own dark inflictions; but reject these pathways, and the soul may lost- feeding from the fruits of its own self knowing, only to be caught in a cycle. But like every cycle, there is a means for breaking it, but only if the new pathway is embraced.
[The title "Welcome Home" is displayed on a large banner before the words Claire Bennet]
[Union Wells High School, Brandon and Claire]
(Claire is seen sitting on the podium of her old football field where she used to engage in her ritualistic cheerleading practices. Hundreds of students and teachers are gathered around cheering at the sight of Claire returning to cut the red ribbon for the inauguration of the new football field now called "Petrelli Field". The new principal of the school talks through the microphone attempting to calm down the hysterical crowd of students and faculty. As she glares into the bleachers the noise quickly begins to settle.)
Claire: (Says silently to herself) I wish I had that ability. I can never get people to shut up around me.
Principle: "Today, we are honoring one of our most distinguished alumni. Claire Petrelli has shown tremendous courage in revealing her abilities to the public. She's become the face of the evo movement and I am proud to have her here to inaugurate our newly remodeled football field. Claire was a cheerleader on the old field and now here she is to cut the field for the new one; Ladies and gentlemen; boys and girls- Claire Petrelli."
(The applause started up again as Claire approaches the podium. She lowers the microphone to her level and attempts to quiet down the crowd but is unsuccessful. She then smiles and waits out the loud cheering until they sit down.)
Claire: Thank you. I'm flattered by all this clapping but I'm not really sure why you're doing it.
Student: CAUSE YOU'RE AWESOME!
Claire: The thing is, I'm not. I'm just a girl. I was a cheerleader here just like lots of other girls. I went to class, I did my homework… mostly. (Smiled) I had friends, I went to parties, I went to dances, and I cheered on the football team just like lots of other girls.
(Out in the bleachers, Brandon is seen looking up at Claire with a huge smile on his face. A pair of heavy brown boots walks across the ground. Louder and louder the sound gets as he approaches Brandon from behind but then the person in question walking stands beside him. The man is heavy set in muscle tone and his face is heavily covered in facial hair. He looks up at Claire also and Brandon looks beside him to see the man uncomfortably close to him. Brandon takes a huge step over to the side and continues to listen to Claire's speech.)
Claire: (Giving her speech) –rescued a girl and a cat from a tree.
Brandon: (Lost in her words) Those were memories we had together. We traveled a few states together, witnessing and hearing all kinds of amazing stories told and seen by so many people. I love that she's sharing those miracles with the world; she'll be alright.
(The man turns his entire body, takes one giant leap forward, then turns his body forward again, smiling over the nostalgic moment. Brandon awkwardly turns to the rough looking- scowling man again.)
Brandon: Can I help you?
Scruffy Man: Yeah, you can enjoy your time with your daughter.
(Brandon's heart nearly drops to his stomach. He is tempted to turn his body to face the man directly, but at the same time does not want to take his attention off Claire. He turns to her to avoid suspicion.)
Brandon: How many of you are there? How do you know about me?
Scruffy Man: I know about your little soul game you play. (Lightly chuckles) Heck, I play it too.
Brandon: Spit it out already; what do you want?
Scruffy Man: I'm here for the cheerleader.
Brandon: Claire's off limits pal, back off. (Turns to him)
Scruffy Man: You really are a self absorbed condescending jerk aren't you; just like the old days- always looking out for family. (Egoistic chuckles) No, sir, I'm not here for her. I mainly wanted to meet you is all. I painted this moment; then wanted to be a witness to it.
Claire: (Looks up at the sign above the scoreboard then sighs) I know it's named Petrelli field after me, but as far as I'm concerned, this field is named after my father, Senator Nathan Petrelli and my uncle, Peter Petrelli. They were the real heroes, who tried to make the world a better place. My father died for it. Peter saved my life more than once. I hope that this new field will be a symbol for the new hope that everyone can live in peace- together.
(Claire turned to look at the Principal and she gives Claire a nod. She stands to her feet, approaches Claire and hands her a large pair of scissors that were decorated with the school's colors. The two walk together to the large red ribbon where Claire prepares to cut it down the middle, officially opening the field. A handshake is met and both Isaac and Joshua Jackson prepare to say their goodbyes, along with Sarah, or "Eden" who stands in the background of Isaac at the airport.)
Isaac: We had a nice talk, man; good luck on your niece's homecoming.
Joshua: Hey, man thanks and you as well! Good luck with the "doctor". (Winks at Eden and laughs)
Eden: Alright, I think you two have had enough time, Mr. Mendez, we're on a tight schedule and my boss is waiting on us.
Isaac: Okay one second. Here- (Quickly reaches into his bag and hands Joshua a mini sketchbook) These notes are everything I have on a few comics I planned but never got around to developing. I don't think my heart is in the right place to awaken these characters to their full potential- Artists pariah. But it may be worth money someday. (Winks) Something to remember me by, not what I have done but the possibilities of what I could've done if my time is ever… "cut" short.
Joshua: (Slowly takes the book and flips through the pages enthusiastically) I'll take good care of this. Interesting-
Eden: We really should get going, Isaac.
Isaac: I know we didn't have time to talk about the Uluru character, I can tell you enjoyed him, but the thought of just- (Shivers a quick second) what he is, scares me.
(A blonde girl and her mother are seen yelling and waving at Joshua from afar.)
Mother: Joshua!
Girl: UNCLE JOSHUA! HI!
Isaac: There's your welcome party. It was nice meeting you.
(Both Joshua and Isaac give a friendly nod then go their separate ways.)
[Union Wells High School]
(High on the rooftop looking down at Claire writing autographs and displaying her healing power to the crowd, are Peter Petrelli and Sylar. Peter is obviously deep in thought about something and Sylar just stands on the roof top shuffling through a set of index cards, uninterested by the events going on below.)
Sylar: You know eventually you're going to have to talk to her, Peter. You can't hold on to this grudge forever.
Peter: What, so you think you know me now?
Sylar: I know you're not yourself. The Peter I know would be down there supporting Claire; sharing that happiness with her.
Peter: Yeah well she seems to be doing pretty good on her own. She's down there being a celebrity; living out in the open; like she's always wanted.
Sylar: That night during homecoming, it was a poetic night, don't you think? It was the first time the three of us met. It's also the first night I was caught by the company. (Laughs) That Haitian has a unique ability. I wonder if I tried to take it, could he just disable his own power and stop me from getting it? Huh… (Shrugs) Oh well, it's all in the past now.
Peter: The company had you? I'd love to know that story.
Sylar: Nothing too fantastic. It wasn't a showdown or anything, Some woman, Eden, got me with her ability of persuasion and put me to sleep. She was another one of those victims who got away. Her death truly was tragic because she shot herself in the head, preventing me from obtaining her ability and causing more mischief. She gave her life in the moment to secure a better future for possible other victims. The company despised her for that, but looking back on it, she deserves recognition for her action. She was a real hero, because without her sacrifice, I could've done so much with her power.
Peter: You sound creepy you know that?
Sylar: (Continues flipping through the cards) Go down there, Peter. Talk to Claire; she needs you.
Peter: People die, Sylar, and the world is full of hatred because of how selfish she was for her making that decision.
Sylar: Well, I guess that means you just have to fix it. Hatred has always been a problem, Peter but now it's surfaced which makes an opportunity to dissect it and understand it in the human condition. What's the point of having a good heart if you're not willing to express it? Show the world how it's done- what to do-
Peter: Shut up! Don't say anything else.
Sylar: Look, Peter, I'm here to stay. Whether you like it or not, we are partners and getting along is something that'll make this partnership easier. I'm sorry for killing Nathan and I know you probably won't fully forgive me, but at the same time you've gotta give me some credit for trying to fix things as best I can. It's all I can do. If you can't let go for me, do it for yourself for your state of mind, otherwise that hate will build.
Peter: Look, I don't wanna admit, but I'm not mad at you so much for Nathan. It pisses me off that you keep trying to tell me how to be a better person.
Sylar: (Smiles and looks down at the index cards one last time) I've fixed many things in my lifetime, Peter but you were the one thing I never could fix.
(Peter turns around and sees that Sylar has vanished. Seconds later, Peter's phone begins to ring. Walking through the dark isolated halls of the high school is Joshua Jackson starring into a glass case looking at a picture of all the cheerleaders. He smiles as his eyes glance at each and every one of them posing in the pictures.)
Joshua: This is so cool.
(A pretty blonde Cheerleader approaches Joshua with a big smile on her face and a black smudge beneath her left eye. Once she sees Joshua, she quickly paces up to him and gives him a huge hug.)
Cheerleader: Hey, Uncle Joshua!
Joshua: (Ecstatically laughs) Hey, Jackie. Are you excited for your homecoming game?!
Jackie: Super excited! Like you have no idea! (Laughs) I've been waiting for this day for a long time! Thank you again, so much for having those talks with me, Uncle they really helped.
Joshua: I'm glad I could help. I don't expect it to be easy for you to express your feelings to that girl who bruised your eye, but I know you care about her. Attempt to fix things, if that's what you truly want.
Jackie: We'll see when that time comes. (Gives him another hug) but I do have to get going; the girls and I have to get ready for the BIG GAME! (Giggles and hugs her uncle as tight as she can)
(A sense of true delight fills him and a strong warm feeling consumes his heart. He gives her a hug back, tightening his grip to express how much he cares for his newly found niece.)
Joshua: (In ecstasy) I will be watching you. Do your best; be confident.
Jackie: (Laughs in excitement) Watch me rock it out there!
(The other cheerleaders come rushing down the hall and Jackie quickly rushes into the crowd to join them in their journey to the courtyard. Joshua just can't help but to indulge in her smile as she laughs endlessly with her cheering squad. Joshua walks away from the glass case and as he turns the corner he crosses a determined young man in a brown coat, nearly running into him.)
Joshua: Oh, excuse me, sir.
Peter: Sorry about that. Hey, do you by any chance know where I can find… (Cracks a smile) Nevermind. I'd just sound weird. Have a good night.
(Peter walks off and whispers to himself over and over again.)
Peter: Don't be nervous, Peter; you got this.
(Joshua just smirks and continues on walking. He gets lost and Joshua ends up accidentally walking into a second hall that seems cold, dark, and endless. An eerie feeling comes over him but he walks through the doors anyway. Outside of the high school is a large clock beneath a long banner that says "HOMECOMING". The minute hand moves as time slightly moves forward. Back inside, Joshua realizes he's made a complete circle and reenters the hall he was in before where he met Peter. Loud banging is heard followed by screaming and Claire comes charging out of the locker room covered in blood. Joshua catches Claire running out but he quickly rushes into the locker room only to see a horrifying sight. He stands in the doorway and his shadow extends to the body of his niece lying in a pool of her own blood. Joshua slowly walks over to her, mindless and unable to comprehend the situation. He kneels to her, grabs her, and holds her head close to his chest. He just shakes and rocks back and forth with her.)
Joshua: Jackieee- Jackie, hug me back… please… Jackie? (Heavily begins crying and lets out a wheezing exhale as he utters his words) Jackie…
(He feels her trying her hardest to hang in there. She struggles to lift her arm up to him and brushes against the side of his stomach only to have her arm drop back down to the floor. All he can hear is her whisper with her final breath "run". A man stands behind him wearing all black.)
Future Hiro: I know this is hard. Fate can be cruel, but you deserve answers. People out there who are gifted, special; who have power are targeted by this monster. He killed her trying to copy- her ability…
Joshua: Save her please? I don't care how just give her a chance to live… even if I exchange my life for hers.
Future Hiro: I cannot... but I will change this. I can change time. All of this will be fixed.
Joshua: What was the person you lost?
Future Hiro: His name is Ando. He was my best friend; more like a brother.
Joshua: Are you god? Are you death? Fix her, please! (Breaks down again) Wh-wha- what is this?! Why do I feel- th-this.
Future Hiro: It is grief. Make it peaceful or this moment will consume you.
Joshua: Cheerleading is what she was. She wasn't her name or some girl. She was a part of my world and she was pure light. People knew her as Jackie, a cute girl, obsessive for attention, but when she cheered; when she was out on that field; when she was out practicing, that's when she was her real self. Cheerleading was the closest thing she had to expressing her soul's beauty. She was not Jackie, Cheerleading was her. (Calms his tears) Please… save the cheerleader… save me.
Future Hiro: I will change this, I promise you that- I will send a savior to protect the cheerleader.
Joshua: … You travel through time?
Future Hiro: I do…
Joshua: It's just what Isaac said, suspend your reality and find your power… I feel this- inside of me… No words can describe. (Slowly rubs her precious cheeks) How many of you exist?
Future Hiro: Thousands…
Joshua: (Resolving) From this moment on- I will kill all of you… I will destroy the world that you live in, all of you so if people like you want to help people in this world- I say to you- Save the cheerleader, my niece and only then will you save the world. Otherwise, you all will feel this- wrath burrowing inside me. And you will suffer.
Future Hiro: I got your message and I will deliver it. For now, I must go back to my time and begin preparation.
(Future Hiro disappears and behind him- the man with the scruffy face and large body is standing in the girl's locker room staring blankly at the floor in a trance. As he takes a few steps, he sees Sylar sitting on the bench starring at the same spot he is.)
Scruffy man: Who are you?
Sylar: Gabriel, and you?
Joshua: Joshua Jackson. (Slowly takes a few steps forward and blankly stare at the ground) Why are you here? This is the girl's locker room; someone might think you're a creep.
Sylar: (Chuckles to himself) Eh, it wouldn't be the first time someone's called me that.
Joshua: (Glances at Gabriel then the spot again) How did you know her…?
Gabriel: I killed her.
(Taking a moment, Joshua very slowly takes a few steps forward then sits on the bend across from the one Sylar is sitting on. The two look up at one another.)
Joshua: She was my niece.
Sylar: (Says sincerely) I'm sorry. I attacked the wrong cheerleader.
Joshua: You wanted Claire, right? Did you eventually get her?
Sylar: I did.
Joshua: (Empty) Then why did my niece have to lose her life- her precious life…?
Sylar: (Shrugs) For a temporary setback. Claire would've lived either way. After I cut her head open, she regenerated.
Joshua: You're just dragging my face more in the mud. What was the point of her dying…?
Gabriel: (Stares deep into his face) No matter how bad I choose to feel about what I've done, I can't change the fact that her death was ultimately in vain. Eden would've still captured me, the Company would've had me and after what I did to his daughter, Bennet probably would've killed me the moment he knew I was in custody. It was a messed up situation but ultimate Jackie's death was unnecessary and didn't bring much good, but being a serial killer, most scenarios aren't with me. I'm sorry about her; I truly am, but there is nothing I can do for her now.
Joshua: That's what Hiro Nakamura from the future said to me all those years ago. He told me he would send someone to change the past and save her. I told Future Nakamura to give his sender a message- to save the cheerleader in order to save the world. By cheerleader, I meant my niece Jackie and by save the world I meant that as a threat that I would destroy everything you people stood for if she was not brought back to me. (Stares at the polished clean floor) Like it never happened. I- talked- (Looks up at Gabriel) to a man and during the conversation we mentioned the idea that when something hurts us- (Points at his chest with his index finger) inside, that we end up growing into it as we age. I was always good at letting issues come and go but when I gave my heart to that sweet girl and she left me- (Clenches the center of his shirt with his hand) a part of me left too, and I want it back.
Gabriel: We often leave pieces of ourselves in others, and when they shut us out; or deny us access to intimate parts of who they are, they trap whatever part of us we gave them within themselves. Sometimes beings have to reunite in order to peacefully exchange what has been horded by the other and only then do we begin to feel whole.
Joshua: Did you ever feel bad for what you did?
Gabriel: … A small part of me.
Joshua: You gave a good speech, but even if I'm not fixed, that still leaves her. How does she find justice? How does her soul find peace?
Gabriel: Your soul has trapped her innocence. Only when you move on, will she, but that's not going to happen sadly. You'll be joining her on the other side. Because I see the vengeance in your eyes, and I know that by not killing you now, you're going to be an even bigger problem later. Who knows how many people you will kill or already have.
(Sylar uses telekinesis to throw Joshua into the lockers behind him and as he does so, a light from the ceiling breaks off, falls, and hits Sylar in the head, knocking him out instantly. Joshua quickly gets up and straightens his back after the hard impact. Joshua just takes a deep breath and continues to grieve for his niece.)
Joshua: Something's looking out for me. Was it you or him?
[Tokyo Japan]
(Outside of the hospital in Tokyo Japan, Ando impatiently waits as Peter appears before him. The two get excited to see each other and Peter is a little winded by the complete change in atmosphere.)
Peter: I actually made it here.
Ando: Peter! (Gives Peter a big hug) I am really glad to see you!
Peter: What was so important you had me come here, Ando; where's Hiro?
Ando: Hiro is inside, but I need your help with something. Do you remember that night at homecoming when we had to save the cheerleader?
Peter: How could I forget? What about that night?
Ando: Do you remember what you said to me? You said you are not anybody and I told you, I was not anybody without Hiro. Now I'm trying to be somebody. My fiancée was attacked and the man who did it needs to be brought to justice.
Peter: Ando- (Sighs) Revenge obviously isn't the answer; although I know what you're going through.
Ando: This is something I need not just for Kimiko but myself as well. Please help me find the man.
Peter: (Conflicted) Look, Ando…
Ando: Please, Peter Petrelli. I'm sick of being in second place all the time. For once I want to act first.
Peter: (Looks back and forth into his eyes) Bennet has connections with someone who can help you out. He knows someone like us who can find people. He said if there were ever any emergencies, to contact him about it.
Ando: Thank you, do you know where he lives? How can I find him?
Peter: You're a good man, Ando; I don't want this world to lose that. We need you to stay good. I've already said too much and with that, I trust that you'll make the right decision.
Ando: Peter, please!
Peter: (Sighs) Ando… Fine; I'll take you to him. I know how far you'll go and I know I can't stop you. The very least I can do is save you some time and hope you'll learn from this.
Ando: Thank you, Peter.
(Peter grabs Ando's shoulder and closes his eyes to teleport them both away.)
[Bennet's apartment building Washington]
(Bennet is seen reading a recipe book on how to cook spaghetti while starring at a burned pot of noodles running under warm water in the sink.)
Bennet: So, so it's water first then noodles, got it.
(There is a sudden knock on the door and Noah quickly drops the magazine to go and answer it. It's a slightly older woman about his age wearing a black muscle shirt and black sweatpants.)
Noah: Hello- Ginger, right?
Ginger: Hi, Bennet. I couldn't help but notice the sweet yummy smell of your cooking and was hoping we didn't have to evacuate the complex again for a false fire emergency. (Smiles)
Noah: (Subtly chuckles) I'm honestly doing better than the last time. I stopped the fire before it got too big this time.
Ginger: Well a'int you a charmer? (Chuckles) May I come in please and lend a hand?
Noah: Please do; I'm retired so I've got plenty of time to learn new skills.
(Noah happily lets her in and Ginger goes straight to the kitchen to check out the situation.)
Ginger: This place is such a pigsty; no wonder you can't get anything cooked right in here. (Sighs) Well, I better grab my good apron; I've got a lot to do. I'll be back in a jiffy.
(Ginger quickly walks out of the apartment and both Peter and Ando appear right before her, scarring her nearly to death.)
Peter: Sorry, ma'am; we didn't mean to scare you.
Ginger: I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Ever since you people came out of the closet, I've seen all kind of crazy things! (Laughs) I used to be scared out of my mind but after you've seen so much, you gotta make the choice to either accept what's new or stay living in fear. I decided on the prior. (Gently taps Peter's hand twice, giggles, and walks away)
(Both Peter and Ando knock on Bennet's apartment and as he does so, the door across the hall is opened. The young teenage boy saddened, glances at them and runs off after slamming the door closed.)
Ando: What was that about?
Peter: I guess things still haven't gotten easier for that poor kid. Look, Ando, I brought you hear, but now you've gotta do this on your own. I've gotta make sure that kid is ok.
(Peter quickly walks off and Bennet answers the door.)
Noah: Ando! Aren't you in Japan; where's Hiro?
Ando: (Slightly annoyed) Hiro is on his own mission; He said he would help me but then when it came time to find him, he backed out. Hiro is scared of this man because he can beat Hiro's time traveling.
Noah: Ando... I'm retired-
Ando: That is fine, but Peter told me you could help.
Noah: (Sighs) Okay, I can help you, but under no circumstances to you give my name. Come in.
(Ando enters the apartment and Noah closes it behind him. Noah walks over to the counter and opens his cell phone.)
Noah: Dr. Suresh is taking care of a girl who has the ability to find anyone in the world just by thinking about them. Getting to her is very difficult simply because of how over protective both he and Matt are over her, but because you saved him from the nut house, he might be willing to do this one thing for you. Do you have a picture?
Ando: I have already tried Dr. Suresh and he was not too happy, but yes, I do. I sent an image to my phone from the surveillance we have at Yamagato. (Pulls out his cell phone)
(Ando shows Bennet the picture of the man. Bennet seems rather fascinated once he sees who it is.)
Noah: Ooh… Zekiel Kadashi. I remember this one well. He was sent to level five early out of his teens. His ability we thought was simple, yet dangerous. We thought he had the power to create surges of energy from his body. I remember this one well… Soon after Homecoming.
(Bennet has a flashback and he's seen entering level 5 with an angered look on his face. He passes by a cell with a large glass window and stubby bald man comes rushing to the glass once he sees Bennet. Noah tries to ignore him but he the stubby man persists to try and get his attention.)
Doyle: We know what you did, Bennet. Don't think your failure will go unpunished, "company man".
(Noah just ignores him and continues to move forward.)
Doyle: (Yells in slight anger) Eden was a good soul!
(Bennet continues off, passing the cell of a man throwing trails of scorching blue flames from his hands, And another cell with a man sitting on his bed rubbing his hands together; with a few tattoos on his face. A bronze-figured man also wearing a suit and glasses stares into the glass of one of the cells looking at Zekiel sitting in a corner shooting red energy beams from his finger and hitting the walls. The company agent starring at Zekiel in the cell is wearing a name tag that says "Michael". Above that says "Visitor". Once Noah sees Zekiel demonstrating his abilities, he has a slightly concerned look across his face, but once he reminds himself Zekiel's in a cage, his worry quickly diminishes.)
Michael: I'm guessing it went well.
Bennet: Taking the news of his daughter's death didn't seem to stick too well, but we left him with his guilt.
Michael: She was under your watch, how could you let that happen?
Bennet: You are a valuable asset to this Company, that fact is not lost on me, but remember your place in this company and don't for a second feed yourself the illusion that you have authority to speak like that. Now you wanna tell me why you're here obviously teaching one of the most dangerous criminals we have here how to use his power. Obviously he never learned how to shoot from his fingertips before.
Michael: I demonstrated my power to the man once and he learned how to do it himself.
(Zekiel jumps to his feet and approaches the glass.)
Zekiel: There are many secrets to me you're not aware of, Mr. Smith. Like my ability to emit energy from my body isn't even half of what I can do. Any molecular structure I control and I manipulate. Michael here just taught me a neat trick I could do with my power. It was by accident but still, I'm a very observant young man.
Noah: Good thing you're stuck in that box, huh? You can develop all the powers you want; it still won't help you escape this room. Get that through your head now and save yourself the trouble of giving yourself a false sense of hope.
Zekiel: I will get out of here soon. (Smirks in Bennet's face) I'm just checking out the talent for when I get outta here and we take over.
Noah: You think you people are superior to us, I guess I can understand that, but know this- you're the one in a box, and we're the ones out there free to roam and do as we please. (Smirks back at him) Think about that while you live out your days in regret. (Turns to Michael) And as for you, I don't wanna see him learning any new tricks so no more private lessons.
Michael: (Sucks in his pride and straightens his suit) Yes, sir.
Noah: We're preparing a cell for Knox. He tricked one of the newbies and terrified him to the point he regained strength and tried to break free. We're putting him down here as an extra precaution in keeping him in a cell where he belongs.
Michael: (Glares sideways at Noah) I'll get it set up right now.
(Noah comes out of his flashback.)
Noah: That was the first time he displayed the evolution of his powers. When he escaped, it was a shock to all of us, but we knew once he was caught, it was either death or sent to- somewhere else.
Ando: Eh- Somewhere else?
Noah: … If there was another option I had no clue about it. We've been trying to catch this guy for a long time; the only lead we have is his family's address. He never showed up there, but there's always a first time. If contacting Mohinder is something you don't feel too comfortable doing, I'd suggest going to his address first.
Ando: Thank you, Bennet. This means so much to me.
Noah: Ando- What exactly do you hope to accomplish by finding this man? Even with your ability; you're no match for him.
Ando: I- know. Eh. I used my ability on him, full charged and he took it like it was nothing.
Noah: Do you have any sword skills, know any fighting styles; what exactly is your plan to defeat him?
Ando: I… Guess I hadn't really thought about it. He stabbed Kimiko; put her in the hospital.
(Noah sighs, thinking about his former wife and how he felt the moment she was killed by someone with abilities.)
Noah: (Says in Japanese) I know how deep that wounds goes. If you're going to pursue this man, you're going to need backup. I can give the Haitian a call right now.
(Ando nods his head. Noah dials on his cell phone. By surprise, Rene is in a parking lot sitting in a car with Tracy in the driver's seat opening her door; preparing to get out.)
Noah: What is your location? I've got a job for you. And old level 5 target popped up and is wrecking havoc again- Zekiel Tadashi.
Rene: Send me details.
Noah: (A bit hesitant to tell the truth) Actually… I've got someone coming by to assist me in my- (Looks at his burning pot) Cooking skills. So I'll need everyone out ASAP. Ando Masahashi will be your partner.
Rene: Don't you think Walker would be more suited also for this job?
Noah: His ability constantly changes and so does his location She would have to tag along the entire time and that would be too dangerous for her. I'm sending you in hopes that you can disable his ability but if all else fails, I'd rather not risk you getting hurt as well.
(Tracy and Rene are both seen walking through the crowded parking lot.)
Rene: As much as I would like to help, but Ando Masahashi involved means something personal must be going on. As of now, I am tasked to look after your daughter at her Union Wells inauguration.
Noah: Wait, that's today?! Why didn't she remind- Ugh… I've gotta be the worse father in the world.
Rene: No, just an aging one. She will understand. As for Mr. Masahashi, I still remember our little encounter at the theater. I may be tempted to even the score once I see him again so for his sake, I stay where I am.
Noah: W-was that your attempt at a joke…?
Rene: I am sorry, Bennet. (Hangs up)
Bennet: Well… I never thought I'd hear those words from Rene, but he's decided against helping you on this one. Sorry, Ando. With that number and address, I've done all I can for you. In the meantime, I do have plans to take some cooking lessons and watch my little girl on T.V. I'm pretty sure the event at her school is being recorded live.
Ando: Right… Thank you, Noah Bennet. I will repay you back someday.
Noah: (Nods in uncertainty) Let's hope so.
(Noah escorts him out and as Ando leaves the apartment, he walks down the hall deep in thought as to what to do next. On the rooftop of the same apartment building, Peter walks out there to see Elliot, Noah's next door neighbor on the rooftop with a can of spray paint spraying the edge of the rooftop. As the rooftop door closes, Elliot freaks out and quickly turns around in a panic to see who it is.)
Peter: Hey, don't spray; I'm one of the good guys. (Smiles)
(Peter confidently walks up to Elliot and looks at the few random lines written on the edge of the building balcony. Peter can't help but smile then look at the boy.)
Peter: I'm guessing this was a letter to- who, Santa?
Elliot: Just a letter to myself to stop caring about how other people feel about me. (Eyes gloss up)
(Peter leans his back against the balcony and can't help but to notice the recurring pattern in his recent life dealing with father issues.)
Peter: Your father?
Elliot: Yeah- Yeah it's my dad. I did everything to get him to accept me for not being the same as others but he just won't. He's afraid of me.
Peter: Yeah… (Scratches the side of his head) My father was afraid to- and I guess he saw me as a threat to him, so he- (Clears throat)
Elliot: Disempowered you…?
Peter: I get what it's like having father issues. But you know I had to learn to go my own way, otherwise I would've fallen down a dark path following my father's shadow. You just gotta go your own way.
Elliot: But what if he hates me for it?
Peter: A lot of parents tell their children how proud they are of them after they've made accomplishments, but during the challenge of those accomplishments, parents usually fight us all the way through. Your father will accept you eventually.
Elliot: Yeah? Thanks.
Peter: What's your gift- your power I mean?
Elliot: Power?
Peter: Well… yeah you have a power, don't you? Isn't that why your father is so-
Elliot: I'm not like that. I'm not like one of those people. My father dislikes me because of the way I dress, my punk rock attire, the music I listen, my taste in T.V. Shows. He calls me evil because of things I'm into.
Peter: Wow. (Slightly laughs at himself) My mind's been so focused on how much my people have been hurt an oppressed that I forgot other people who're not like me go through the exact same problems. Hey, kid; I'm sorry about your dad; just promise me you'll do all you can to help yourself get out of this situation you're in.
Elliot: I can try, but being so young, I don't have very may options.
Peter: Then create your own. I promise it gets better- (Taps Elliot on the shoulder twice) life after high school… it gets better.
[Tokyo, Japan Kimiko and Hiro Nakamura]
(Back in Japan Hiro enters his sister's hospital room and approaches Kimiko, who lies on her bed. The two of them talk in Japanese the entire time.)
Hiro: You asked for me specifically, Kimiko; are you feeling okay?
Kimiko: I know my lover, Hiro. I know how Ando feels about this. I was not the only one wounded. I- I know Ando wants to get revenge, Hiro, but you cannot stop him. Like me standing on my own, some journeys we must take for ourselves to learn who we are. All you can do, Hiro, is be there and hope he makes it though the other side in one peace; if not, you must be there to help pick him up if he falls. That is something mother helped me understand, Hiro.
(Hiro takes into deep consideration his sister's words. Outside of the hospital, Peter appears with Ando. Once again Peter looks around with a strange feeling coming over him.)
Ando: Thank you Peter, I will do all I can to make things right.
(Peter is hoping that Ando makes the right decision or at least thinks of the best outcome for his friend. He gives Ando a nod then closes his eyes to teleport away. Ando's phone beeps for a second and as he pulls it out, he sees a message in Japanese. A short time later, Ando walks into a empty dojo and before him he sees Hiro on the floor in a blue kimono with two wooden kendo swords on each side of him.)
Ando: Hiro, what is this?
Hiro: You cannot fight him in your current state.
(Hiro stands to his feet and tosses one of the swords to Ando with a look of seriousness on his face.)
Hiro: I am with you, brother, through laughs and blood. Now, we must fight in hopes to reserve both in you. (Takes a stand and readies his sword) You want to beat this dragon, you must train.
Ando: Why do you not want revenge, Hiro? It seems like you do not care for your own sister.
Hiro: I want to face this monster on my own, my way and I did not want your life in jeopardy. Truthfully, I fear the Ando from the future. But… true friends do not see fear or weakness in each other, so I must not hold you back from being the warrior I see that you are. You are my equal, Ando Masahashi; you will prove it from this moment forward.
(Ando takes off his jacket and tosses it to the floor. He gets into a sloppy stance obviously not supporting balance of his body and takes a fighting stance before Hiro. Without hesitation, Hiro lets out yell and charges at Ando full force)
