Alright chapter two. Here we go. :)
Akira awoke with a feeling of unease, not too unfamiliar. Groaning, he reached over to his side, how late was it? Maybe he could still rest for a couple of minut-
The rattling of chains made his eyes widen and any thoughts of rest disappeared instantly.
Franticly, he looked around. His pyjamas were replaced with a black and white striped prison gown. The ceiling was nothing but a black void and the walls were out of concrete, while somehow having the appearance of an odd leather button pattern. The floor itself felt cold…
But not as cold as the chains on his hands and leg attached to a metal ball. He pulled at both, but neither giving an inch. Was he stuck in another cell!? Where even was he!?
As he was about to growl with frustration like the chained animal he had become once more, a chuckle caught his attention, pulling his gaze towards the cell door, also clad in chains and leading out to a large circular room.
Two girls, astoundingly tiny, dressed like wardens caught his eyes. Both wearing eyepatches with a golden V on them. Before he could wonder what they were doing any further, they parted ways, allowing him to see an old man sitting behind a table.
Everything about him looked wrong. Bloodshot eyes, grey hair on a balding head, ears like from a fairy and a nose so long you could impale a grown man on it.
"Trickster…" the creature spoke in a voice so deep it made his skin curl, "Welcome to my Velvet Room."
Akira awoke with a gasp, taking in as much air as possible with shaky breaths.
He looked around, instantly calming himself at the sight of the attic. That he'd ever be actually GLAD to wake up here. Dirty or not, it was a VAST improvement over the Cell. This… Velvet Room.
What even… was all of this? A dream one of the girls told him. Justine and Caroline. And the imposing man behind the desk called itself Igor?
Ruin? Rehabilitation?
Frankly he'd rather avoid ruin, even if he wasn't sure how else his life COULD get ruined. But on the off chance that he WASN'T getting crazy, which might be the preferred option… maybe he should stop snapping at whatever the hell these things were the next time he saw them.
His bones had rattled when this 'Caroline' smashed her baton at the cell door when he had demanded to be let out.
Deciding to put the whole Nightmare in the 'deal with it later' box in the back of his brain, he dressed himself into his new uniform.
Shujin's Uniform wasn't UGLY per say, with its black long sleeve jacket, checked pants and white shirt beneath it all. But it felt uncomfortable on his skin. Everything about it reminded him of just another prisoners garb. Maybe that was just his addled mind playing tricks on him.
But did the emblem had to look this much like a police badge?
Taking his fake glasses, he put them on just in time for Sojiro to enter, "Looks like you're up."
Akira met Sojiro's gaze. Still as neutral as the day before. "Well then, let's go introduce ourselves properly to the staff about your transfer."
Akira nodded, not bothering to do much talking with a man who clearly didn't feel like it and soon enough they left for the Aoyama district.
"Alright I'm ready." Ariella called out to the still waiting Yoshida, running down the stairs as she did. "Sorry for keeping you waiting."
Tora merely laughed it off "It's alright. We are still good on time."
She nodded at him with a smile, grateful for the news. He was already driving her today. She didn't want to keep him waiting longer than necessary. "How do I look?" she asked stretching out her arms and doing a small twirl.
Ariella wore the same uniform every student of Shujin wore. A black long-sleeved jacket with red buttons and the emblem of Shujin on her left breast and a bit above a small '2' for her grade. Beneath it a white shirt and a short red and black checked skirt from which black leggings descended down into black sneakers. It was the same everyone wore. The only difference in her attire from the norm were that she still had her yin yang necklace, earring and glasses to stand out.
"I say the uniform suits you rather well."
She smiled at the statement, looking down on herself approvingly. "Thanks. You know I was always kinda jealous of Japan for these."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Can't really explain why but I always liked school uniforms. Germany doesn't have them like you guys do. We have maybe a few clothes we can buy with the name and symbol of our school on it but there is no rule. Always wanted to try it out and it helps that the design is neat."
Tora nodded at her, "In this case I am glad you can experience it now. But we should go. Wouldn't want you to be late on your introduction."
Agreeing with her guardian, the pair hurried out of the house into the car.
"Do me a favour and behave yourself, alright?"
Akira supressed a groan. Already assuming he was only causing trouble. As if he WANTED anymore issues than he already got.
"Don't get me wrong I don't care what happens to you. Just don't cause me any trouble."
"I understand." Akira said because really what else could he say that wouldn't end with him being thrown out once more.
The two walked into Shujin Academy, Akira feeling the same way he did when he first entered Juvie. Tense, exhausted and merely wanting it all to be over as quickly as possible.
Perhaps not surprising considering what SHUJIN meant.
What did Igor say? This Velvet Room thing represented his heart?
Well what else was it supposed to represent but a Prison if he was thrown from one Jail into another.
"Here we are." Toranosuke announced, car stopping right next to a small walkway leading towards the school itself. "Just head left right there and you should be on your way."
"Thanks for driving." The transfer said before hurrying out of the car. Once out, she turned back to the car… only to notice that Yoshida was still in it.
"Uhm… Tora?" she asked after slightly opening the car door again. "Are… you not coming?"
"Oh well…" Tora seemed unusually nervous. What for? "I think it's for the best if you make your introduction alone."
"…Okay but why? Don't you think they want to know who I am staying with?"
"It's for the best."
She raised an eyebrow. Tora had been nothing but forthcoming ever since she arrived and… NEVER seemed nervous, let alone to such a degree that he was hiding in his car.
But what else could she do but relent right now? "Alright than." She said somewhat hesitatingly.
He seemed to appreciate it "I am going to drive for the rest of the day. You're free to call me when your done and I pick you up from where you are."
"Thanks, but no need." She waved him down, "I wanted to take the day and explore a little. And there is someplace I wanna go. I'll find my way home."
That surprised him, but he didn't press on. "Very well. Have a nice day Ari."
After a small smile exchange Tora drove on and she turned into the walkway, stopping right in front of Shujin.
It was a pretty tall building with great awaiting gates. Three floors tall stretching into the skies. It was rather imposing on a first glance.
Ariella took a deep breath as her eyes met the building in its entirety "Hello there Shujin Academy."
"Take it in Ari. You'll be seeing this building a lot the next year."
She looked up a little bit on Shujin's history one night when she couldn't force herself to sleep. The founder had suffered from depression, which might explain the name meaning 'Jail'.
A morbid sense of humour if she was concerned but oh well.
Going a last time with her hand through her hair, playing a little with her strand, she marched into the halls.
The introduction to the principal went as expected.
Meaning that it was another episode of 'Let's pretend Akira Kurusu is the Anti-Christ'.
The room itself was rather average looking. A lot of closets with lots of meaningless school books. A plant in one corner to pretend like there was something of an atmosphere and a single table for the principal.
Only he was allowed to sit, naturally. Leaving the three other people in the room standing.
Despite the fact that a chair was literally in front of the raven. Though Akira knew better than to sit down at this point. People were scrambling to find some excuse to talk bad about him. Rather not push it.
The only thing that seemed important was the glass cabinet to the principals left, filled to the brim with trophies and achievements. All sports related.
"To reiterate just so we're clear, you will immediately be expelled if you cause any problems."
Principal Kobayakawa lectured him, his voice even more stern and cold than Sojiro's yesterday.
He tried his best to seem imposing, authoritarian, but it wasn't working much when it came from someone who looked like a stuffed goldfish in a business suit. His head was bald, the fat on his body making his suit strain against him. Akira couldn't even see his neck from all the fat that swell out of his collar.
Hell even IGOR looked better than this guy did. Or at the very least the long-nosed Prison Master did a better job of seeming imposing.
"In my opinion you're nothing but a liability, but we had our circumstances to consider. Whatever you might have gotten away with in your hometown… those days are over. If you are thrown out from our school, there will be no place for you to go. Keep that in mind."
"Why your gonna eat me otherwise?" Fat jokes were a bit lazy but screw it. He needed SOMETHING to keep himself entertained over the constant talk of how much of a disgrace he was.
Frankly if he even said ONE of the things he thought, he would get kicked out sooner than his brain could have come up with them.
"I understand." He instead said. His go to answer.
Kobayakawa wasn't at all satisfied with that but didn't press on and instead turned towards the woman standing next to him. "This is the teacher in charge of your class."
The woman, to his amazement, looked like she wanted to be here even less than himself.
"I'm Sadayo Kawakami. Here's your student ID and timetable." She told him, handing him a small card and other papers.
"Be sure to read the school rules. Any violations will send you straight to the guidance office. And if by chance you cause any problems, I won't be able to protect you at all. That IS your promise yes Principal Kobayakawa." She turned back to her principal.
"Okay we aren't even pretending to be cordial."
"Mhm. He alone is responsible for his actions"
"But really though, why me? There should've been better candidates."
"I am standing RIGHT HERE." Everybody wanted respect but who was actually willing to give it? Let alone to someone they deemed 'lesser'.
"It was a sudden transfer, and your class was the only one that had openings, two with one of your students ending up overseas."
…THAT made him perk up. Kawakami had the exchange student that went to Germany?
Does that mean Ariella was going to be in his class?
He took that moment to remind himself of the silver lining at the end of the horizon. Once this talk was over, he would never have to hear it again, except for Sojiro now and then. He could just avoid Kobayakawa and spend his time with people that didn't know of his past. Just enjoy not being seen as Society's garbage and actually be a teenager with something resembling a life again.
It helped his nerves. Didn't soothe them completely, but helped.
"If you're done explaining tings, mind if we get going?" Sojiro spoke up, in some way making him take comfort in the fact he was as exhausted by the lecture as Akira himself was.
"Sakura-san please keep a close eye on him. Don't let him cause any trouble outside." The glutton requested, making the Barista sigh. "Might wanna look out Sojiro. Don't let him know you have a restaurant he will eat your store up"
"Well, I'll be sure to have a serious talk about the situation he's in."
Oh boy ANOTHER! How fun!
Seriously did everyone think he had the memory of a goldfish? There was an actual overfeed goldfish right in front of him.
"Come to the faculty office when you arrive at school tomorrow. I'll show you to your classroom." Kawakami told him.
"I understand."
But just before he could finally escape this conversation-
"Oh and one more thing."
Kobayakawa raised his voice. His gaze was steely and his tone even colder than before.
"You are not the only transfer we are expecting this semester. We happen to have among other things, someone from overseas in our care for the following year. You will be sharing a class due to lack of options alone and both be introduced at the same time. Now this should go without saying, but if you cause any troubles for her you will be expelled without hesitation. Do I make myself clear?"
A flair of rage coursed through him. The one person who DIDN'T treat him like shit and he was now supposed to keep his distance from her.
Frankly a part of him wanted to be angry at Ariella… but he wasn't THAT petty. It's not her fault the World had it out for him.
Maybe she had a better start at Shujin.
"Of course." He said merely, through grit teeth.
Then, finally, he was allowed to leave.
The interior of Shujin was a lot less imposing than the outside view. Arielle merely admired the halls. Kanji on the walls aside it wasn't all that different from a Campus in Germany. Then again there were only so many ways a school could be built.
Her meeting with the principal was due at 8:30. Right now it was 8:25. Still a few minutes left to go and her alarm hadn't gone of yet either. But hey better too early than too late.
She walked up the stairs to the third floor, only to nearly crash into someone.
Ariella was going to apologize, till she caught glance of the frizzy hair above the glasses.
"Oh hey Akira!" she greeted with a grin and giving him a quick hug in greeting.
The Japanese boy was a bit startled at meeting her, and seemed oddly tense at the embrace, not even returning it. She pulled back and looked him in the eyes. "Didn't expect to see you today honestly. Thought you were already gone."
"Uhm…" he stopped for a bit before catching himself. "Hey Ari. Nice to see you."
"Kid?... You know this girl?" A man next to Akira spoke up. He looked roughly middle-aged with slicked-back black hair and receding hairline and a pale pink dress shirt.
She took a quick glance between both before a lightning bulb went off above her head. "Oh you must be his guardian." Ari spoke to the elderly man, "I am Ariella. Nice to meet you."
The man took a step back but cleared his throat. "Well nice to meet you too. I am Sojiro Sakura and yeah I am his guardian. I didn't know the kid already made a friend."
"I met her when I entered Tokyo. She just arrived as well and we got something to eat." Akira explained to which she nodded. "Yeah. Transfers gotta stick together after all, right?" she tried to joke.
…For some reason Akira tensed up even more. So did Sojiro on second thought. "Something wrong?" she asked somewhat awkwardly.
For a brief moment, Sojiro looked torn between two emotions, which she couldn't quite read, before shaking his head. "It's nothing. Welcome to Tokyo."
Ariella was about to thank him but was stopped by the tune of an alarm. Immediately reaching into her skirt pocket she pulled out her phone, deactivated it and addressed the two guys. "Sorry but I gotta go. My turn to meet with the principal." She hurried past them only to turn back a few feet away. "See ya Akira."
And with that she was off.
"Soooo… you met the one girl you are explicitly told NOT to interact with on your first day in Tokyo?"
Akira cringed inwardly. "I… am aware of the irony."
His guardian scratched his head. "She seems… nice."
"She is." Akira agreed.
…
The uncomfortable silence continued until Sojiro let out a sigh, expressing genuine pity for the first time since he met him. "Look I am sorry to say this but it's probably for the best if you don't get involved with each other. Whatever your principal's reason is, the last thing you want is to piss of the guy that can kick you out in a heartbeat."
Geez if THAT didn't sound familiar.
"And you will kick me out when I get expelled right?" Akira didn't even say it with malice. Just… blank acceptance.
Sojiro was silent, before sighing again. "This isn't just about you, you know? If word gets out she is associating with a criminal this would tarnish her reputation too."
Akira blinked.
…He never actually thought about that.
…She didn't deserve to deal with the things he had too.
But…
"Nobody is supposed to know I am one right?" Akira asked.
"All I am saying is that your past follows you wherever you go. Everyone is giving you the cold shoulder for a reason. A criminal record isn't something you can just gloss over."
"I understand." Akira repeated, trying to not let him see his clenched fists. "I… try to be careful."
Sojiro looked at him sternly.
And briefly, he shook his head and… smiled at him? "School never changes huh? All that social drama. Everyone tells you to enjoy these years but honestly, I never missed them. Overrated if you ask me."
Akira blinked again, trying to discern how much of it was genuine and whether or not it might be mocking or just a joke.
Before he could figure it out, Sojiro already told him to come with him and the two were off to a battle against the Tokyo traffic.
As soon as Ariella entered the principal's office she was greeted by a booming voice.
"Ah Miss Richter!" Principal Kobayakawa addressed her. His arms were stretched wide as if to try and hug her from afar. "I am truly happy to finally be able to greet you in person! How was your flight? Have you become acquainted yet with Tokyo?"
He nearly tripped over himself with his questions and his smile was so wide it nearly broke his face. Something about it seemed a little… fake? Whatever, likely just her imagination.
Kobayakawa was… a bit obese. Not what she had expected, but not something to waste that much focus on. Better to make a good first impression after all so better to bite your tongue and act completely normal.
Though she couldn't help but wonder if he might be stuck on that chair…
"Pleasure is all mine." Ari replied with a smile, taking the hand he held out to shake it after a small bow. "Flight was good, just a little left over jet lag still. Tokyo itself looks great, I haven't seen a lot of it admittedly."
Kobayakawa nodded, smile never dropping, "Of course, but I am sure by the time you leave our patronage you will have memorized every glorious corner of our city. Please why don't you sit down? Can I offer you anything? Something to drink?"
"No need but thank you." She told him while sitting down. He nodded again.
"Now than may I introduce you to your new class teacher, Sadayo Kawakami." He pointed to his left, to a woman with black hair, wearing a yellow shirt and… frankly looking exhausted. Ariella had been roped into a conversation so soon she barely had time to take in the room, let alone the other person inside. But now that her attention was focused… it was hard to overlook the bags underneath her declared teachers eyes.
Ari hid a grimace, "When was the last time she slept? She looks like a Zombie."
That aside Kawakami still smiled at her, though it looked a lot more forced than Kobayakawa "It's a pleasure to meet you. You will be in my class for the following year. Here is your Student ID and timetable. If you have any worries feel free to come to me at any time."
…Something about it sounded like it was studied. Probably a side effect of exhaustion.
That aside, both seemed pretty welcoming.
She took both papers given to her. "Thank you. I appreciate it."
Kawakami smiled (okay definitely forced this time) before turning back to the principal. "Was that all than Mister Kobayakawa?"
"Yes. Thank you for your time. You may leave now."
And as soon as he said that, the teacher was gone leaving her with the principal who cleared the back of his throat.
"If you check the timetable, you may notice I've taken the liberty to have someone translate it into German." He spoke proudly.
Ariella raised an eyebrow, before checking it. True enough, instead of Kanji there were German words. "Oh. Uuuh…Thank you." She said… not sure what else to say.
"You're welcome." …did he even hear her? He answered before she completely got out the 'A' of 'Thank'. "I just want you to know that we are very happy to have you with us. Please, try to feel at home. I can assure you all of us are very eager to welcome someone from so far away into our halls. In fact you are writing Shujin history."
…okay she appreciated the attempt, but could he tone it down a notch?
"I… am happy to hear that but," she started, trying to not sound rude, "But please, there is no need for you to go so out of your way."
"Ah humble and polite. I can tell you will fit right in." he stated with joy. She just gave a weak laugh, unsure how else to feel.
"Now than please let me tell you about the school you will be attending…" he began again and Ariella found herself leaning back into the chair for the foreseeable time.
Kawakami yawned.
Today was a Sunday. One of the few days where she didn't have to worry about looking 'presentable' to the rest of the school. Usually, she would be able to get a few naps in for the afternoon or midday and with a LOT of luck even a small maid job. The weekends were good for business.
Or at least they were SUPPOSED to be until Kobayakawa called her into school.
Why did they have to do introductions today? Couldn't they have done this tomorrow?
But no, instead of getting some desperately needed rest she needed to greet not one but TWO transfer students.
Who were now in her class.
Ugh.
Why was it her that was pushed with this kind of responsibility? Why not Chouno or Ushimaru?
She could understand the oversea transfer, the 'winner' was after all out of her class.
But the criminal? Wouldn't a male teacher be better suited for this?
Frankly she wasn't sure which one of them would make her life more difficult.
Kurusu had a criminal record, which already screamed that he might cause trouble. When that happens his teacher might be blamed for anything he would do. He was made aware of how Shujin was his final chance, a chance given so Kobayakawa would get a reputation boost that came along with 'reforming' a delinquent. He SHOULD be disinclined to cause trouble. But people could be forgetful.
Its not like she had anything against Kurusu. He didn't look like a bad kid. But she didn't need to be brought down by even more baggage he might carry. She was sinking well enough with her own thank you very much.
On the bright side, she wasn't expected to interact with him all that much. Kobayakawa had promised her that.
Richter on the other hand brought a completely different problem. Kobayakawa had been OVERJOYED at getting a partnership in Europe. As far as he was concerned this was the biggest step in improving Shujin's good name since getting an Olympian medallist as a member of their staff. He hoped to put their school on international radars, which in turn would improve their inland reputation. Her experience was vital for that. One bad word from her and his plans of partnerships might be tanked indefinitely.
As such the staff was instructed to try and be as accommodating as possible. In case she was to do anything questionable, they were even asked to turn a blind eye, within reason. For example nobody was supposed to say anything about her dyed hair.
As Richter's class teacher, Kawakami was of course expected to be THE model teacher. Kind, forthcoming and supportive.
Just the thought made her grow exhausted. The last time she TRIED to be that it caused…
She swallowed. Not in public. We've been over this Sadayo. Minimize crying to your own apartment.
"What a troublesome situation."
She was, thankfully, snapped out of her thoughts by the other teacher she came across in the hallway.
"Oh. Hello Suguru." Kawakami greeted her fellow teacher. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"Well I decided might as well be here when Shujin's 'Princess' gets introduced. With how much fanfare Kobayakawa is doing, maybe I should give her a warm introduction myself." He reasoned with a welcoming smile.
Kawakami gave a weak laugh. "Princess? Not TOO out of the question probably."
"He may be very right. With how much effort Kobayakawa put in this 'Project', Richter could probably paint the school red and he would try to put it under the carpet." She joked in her mind.
Kamoshida laughed much louder as if he had heard it. He seemed particularly upbeat today. Good for him. At least one of them could give honest looks of joy towards the newbie. "I imagine it will be QUITE interesting in your class with all these newcomers."
She sighed. Suguru hit the nail on the head. "If it was just Richter alone it would be manageable. But then he went and put the criminal in my class as well."
"Why in the world was someone like that even admitted here?" Kamoshida asked with what she assumed was sympathy.
"Who knows? But Kurusu is probably for the same reason as Richter, just different means. Improving reputation and all."
Kamoshida crossed his arms, looking wistful to the side. "And here I thought me and my Volleyball team have contributed more than enough to cover that."
"That's certainly true." Kawakami replied, one of her hands going through her unkempt hair. Shujin's Volleyball Team might have been the catalyst for all this. Upon their successes, Shujin climbed up the ladder of best schools in the country in a flash. And once you have something, it's only natural to want more.
She felt pity for the Volleyball Team and their Coach. Kamoshida must be running himself and the kids ragged. She saw the bruises they were in. No pain no gain and all that. She was glad none of them ever complained. At least it meant they were just as passionate about it as their coach.
She had gone out for drinks with Suguru once, feeling worried about whether or not he might overwork himself (like she herself did).
She never told him about her problems though. Kawakami didn't feel like burdening him.
To her pleasant surprise, there was never even a hint of struggle for him. As far as Kamoshida was concerned his life was going perfect. Honestly she found it astounding how passionate he could be.
She lost her passion a long time ago.
Another yawn was creeping up her throat but she forced it down.
"Hey, Sadayo. Be careful okay?" Kamoshida warned her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "I can try and win the transfers to the Volleyball Team, take some of your load off. I'm sure a few practice sessions will whip the criminal into shape with my boys. And I think Richter would fit right in with Suzui and my other girls."
She smiled at her co-worker. "Feel free to try. But thanks. I keep just wishing Kurusu wouldn't show though. Not something I should say as his teacher."
"Hey you're being reasonable here. Honestly if anything WERE to happen, I kick out a student like that right away."
She gave a more heartfelt chuckle at that, "Please. Your too much of a softie for that. You didn't even expel the one who ACTUALLY attacked you."
That had been the moment her respect for Kamoshida started to begin, same for many other members of the staff. Sakamoto had started assaulting him and yet Kamoshida hadn't pressed for an expulsion. Maybe because he felt guilty about the track team and the results of him defending himself from the brunette… or blonde now? Kamoshida apparently tried to reason with Kobayakawa, that's what he told her at least, but the principal demanded there to be severe consequences.
Though Suguru likely already thought that happened. A broken leg must be something more severe than it already was in the eyes of an Athlete.
He laughed with her, releasing her shoulder from his grip. "Maybe your right." He became more contemplating afterwards. "But the track team really was a tragedy. We've had to fill the hole ever since."
"Isn't the next Tournament coming up?"
"Yes. It's quite a challenge in and of itself to have so many expectations on you. I sympathize with that German girl. Hopefully Kobayakawa isn't talking her ears off." He stretched his arms with a groan. "Speaking of, I better go."
"You do that." Kawakami told him and walked away, desperately yearning for her bed and the sweet embrace of sleep.
What she missed was Kamoshida's eyes following her till she was out of sight, a smile on his face all the while.
…He then chuckled to himself, and spoke for nobody to hear other than him. "They are so easy to manipulate."
Dear God this was dragging on FOREVER!
How long had Ariella been on this chair now? It felt like an eternity as Kobayakawa simply… wouldn't. Stop. TALKING.
Her new principal beamed with pride as he went on and on about the History of Shujin. About its many accomplishments and how she was oh so fortunate.
She would call herself that if she gets to leave this room before she started getting grey hair.
Thankfully her 'cooperation' wasn't required for the conversation. She quickly figured out she could manage by simply adding a 'Mhm', 'I see', 'Interesting' or 'Okay' now and then.
"My Kingdom for 5 minutes of silence!"
During another explicit description of 'something something Shujin something something' a knock on the door caught the attention of both. Finally something that broke his constant talking!
"Who is there?" Kobayakawa called out.
"It's Kamoshida. Can I come in?"
There was a small moment of silence, so brief it was barely noticeable. The principal cleared his throat. "Why yes of course. Come in."
Was it just her or did he seem more tense than before? Meh, probably just misjudgement.
Wait… Kamoshida? Wasn't that the name of the Medallist?
The door opened and a tall man entered. Ariella herself wasn't exactly short but the man had at least a head over her. His hair was black and unkempt, and his entire stature was athletic and muscly. About fits for an athlete. Though the whistle and stopwatch around his throat should be proof enough of him being related to sports.
Just as quickly as he entered his eyes were focused on her and he greeted her with a large smile. "Oh great. Looks like I am not too late."
He approached her till he stood right beside her, looking down with welcoming expression and holding out his hand. "You must be Ariella Richter right? I am Suguru Kamoshida, the gym teacher and volleyball coach of our beautiful school."
She took his hand. His grip was pretty strong. "That's me yeah! Nice to meet you Mister Kamoshida."
Kamoshida chuckled, "Freut mich dich kennenzulernen."
Ariella blinked. Why did every second person knew her language? "What? You speak german?"
"Just that little I am afraid." He confessed amused. "I picked up a few phrases from other languages when I represented Japan at the Olympics. But not much more than greetings. But hey saying hello in a few languages is better than nothing right?"
Kamoshida couldn't stop smiling.
"It is good to be me."
When he first heard of the news he almost thought it too good to be true. Though now she was here and it was impossible for his eyes to deceive him. Shujin's newest trophy from across the globe, brought just here for him as if a gift from heaven.
Was it his birthday already?
Little Ariella-chan was a true gem to be added to his collection, his castles treasury so to speak.
She was a beauty that much was clear. Fair skin, smooth looking dirty blonde locks down her back that he wanted to tear at. Alluring curves and best of all a nice pair of breasts. Generous C or D-Cups if he were to guess, not quite but nearly rivalling his Ann.
And those eyes. He heard about heterochromia once but this was the first time he had the pleasure to see it in person. He always had wanted to have such colourful eyes glancing up at him from a girl kneeling in front of him.
She was truly a unique trophy, almost as much as the model within his hands!
"True." She agreed with him about that throwaway line regarding greetings but to him it was like she agreed with his thoughts too. Her eyes lit up briefly "Oh right you're the medallist I heard so much about. Hard to look up Shujin and avoiding your name popping up somewhere. Say quick question if you don't mind but, how did you go from Olympian Athlete to school teacher?"
She was that curious about him? In that case…
"Oh well…" he pretended to be flattered, scratching the back of his head, "After I reached the peak of my time as an athlete, I found myself thinking where to go now. And that… was when I remembered how it all started. What made me go down that route in my life. I used to be a scrawny kid you know? But that's when I ended up meeting my old coach."
He put a hand on his heart, looking blissful for a moment "Bless that old man. Heart gave out way too early. He ended up taking an interest in me. I don't know what he saw in me… must have been something I didn't think of myself."
Now just like you practiced Suguru. Small sad look, NOW the smile. There ya go. You should get an Oscar one of these days.
"The training was rough but he whipped me into shape pretty good, gave me the confidence I didn't know I could have. I thought of him when I stood there with the medal on my neck… and that was when I knew how I wanted to spend the remainder of my life. Maybe one of these days, one of the many students here will think of me as well when they climbed to the top of the world."
The girl listened attentively and her eyes seemed to lit up. "That's… a wonderful story."
Good God it was SO EASY to fool these brats!
Just make up some false heart-warming story and they eat out of the palm of your hand! They ate that shit and asked for seconds.
"Well thank you." He finished with a smile.
Oh she would fit RIGHT IN.
Ariella forced a smile.
That story was WAY too perfect.
Seriously. It's like something straight out of a sports anime.
She didn't even WATCH Sports Anime.
The writer could make an entire list of tropes it ticked off.
"Geez there you go being a cynic again." She found herself thinking.
Who knows maybe the story WAS true. Maybe life COULD sometimes be like a nice story to tell your kids. Good for Kamoshida in this case.
Still… it seemed just a bit TOO perfect for her more… pessimistic side.
Kobayakawa cleared his throat, catching their attention. "Well I am pleased to see you get along. Thank you for your introduction Mister Kamoshida. As you can see Miss Richter Shujin employs the best of the best. But maybe it's enough about us."
"Oh THANK GOD! Can I go now!?"
"Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?"
…What?
"Oh?" She gave a small loud of suppressed shock.
"Why yes of course." Kobayakawa stated joyous. "Files can only get you an idea of who someone is. Please tell us what do you enjoy doing? Do you already have an idea where your future should take you?"
They were showing interest in what she was doing. A quick look around showed Kamoshida just as curious.
Shit.
"Well…" she started weighing her options. What should she say?
…Alright than.
"I've had a few hobbies. I play Piano-"
"Wow going STRAIGHT to lying aren't you? Please you haven't played in years and what do you know other than a few jingles at best?"
"I've done martial arts-"
"Yellow belt than you stopped because the Dojo shut down."
"Cycling-"
"Maybe what once in two/three months? That's barely a hobby."
"Archery-"
"Same as previous one."
"Breakdancing-"
"You visited two workshops. Going on a party doesn't count."
"oh and I like climbing."
"Oh PLEASE that was what once in three years?"
"I also used to act in my schools theatre."
"Yeah because THAT ended so well."
"I also enjoy writing and reading."
"There you go. Finally some honesty."
Both of the mans eyes seemed to gleam, "What a talented young girl."
Ariella gave a weak laugh.
"Holy shit they actually bought all that."
It's not like she was REALLY lying… probably. It was all things she enjoyed doing. It was just that… she had a problem with 'sticking' to something. Sure she'd try it out but rarely it was something she wanted to do regularly. There was more she could have listed… but its not like they needed to know her whole life story.
The only thing she never dropped was writing. That never got old or tiring. Well it COULD be tiring but not the kind where you want to never touch it again with a fifty-yard pole.
But still, it's not like one can tell their new principal that they have… let's say few 'consistent' hobbies. Games and movies don't count after all. What's a small lie here and there?
Kamoshida raised his voice intrigued. "With all these sports do you happen to have an interest in Volleyball too?"
She gave a shrug. "Not really? Sorry just not a fan of team sports."
"Come now. I can already tell you have the makings of an athlete."
Persistent one. Did he need new players this badly?
"Thank you but no thank you."
He blinked… "Well… that's disheartening. If you change your mind I am sure you would fit right in on the team. Think about it okay?"
Not the type to accept a no so easily huh?
Kobayakawa intervened before that topic could continue. "And what do you intend to do after your graduation?"
Ariella addressed the inquiry "I thought about becoming an author. Or a journalist. Hopefully international in the latter case. I like traveling you see… but I assume that's to be expected considering where I am."
The principal chuckled. "True. Well in that case may I recommend the school newspaper? Maybe you'd be interested?"
"Hmm. Maybe." She shrugged. She wasn't sure about joining any clubs. But can't hurt to fake curiosity.
Though… she wasn't too eager about school newspaper. What is there to report at some random school anyway? She tried that out as well and while she liked writing still… there rarely was anything actually worthy of being covered so that was just… kinda dropped.
But as much 'fun' as it was… can she start dropping this conversation? Please? "Say, would that be all then? Sorry but I wanted to take the day to explore Tokyo a little."
The principal gave a last nearly longing glance to the door before sighing. Nevertheless, as if she hadn't existed for the briefest of moments, he smiled at her once more. "Yes that is all. I had hoped to have our student council president show up today. She was supposed to show you around the school."
Oh god, even MORE school stuff on a Sunday?!
"THAT'S totally fine!" she waved him down. "I am much more comfortable exploring things myself anyway."
Kobayakawa seemed to be unpleased but didn't let it show. Clearing his throat, he wet his lips. "Well in that case you are free to leave. I will be having a TALK with Niijima once she DOES arrive though."
Ariella forced down a frown. She didn't want to be Niijima right now. "I am sure it's nothing. Really it's fine I can take care of myself." The blonde attempted to defend her fellow student.
From Kobayakawa's grunt it didn't seem to work. Yet he spoke calmly, "Then you are free to leave. I hope you will enjoy your time under our care." He turned to the other educator in the room. "Mister Kamoshida please stay with me for a while longer. There are matters I wish to discuss with you."
The athlete was unfazed. "Of course."
Ariella had already stood up and approached the door. So close to freedom now.
"Oh wait Ariella-chan." Mister Kamoshida stopped her in her tracks.
The writer took a deep breath, "SO CLOSE."
"Yes?"
"There is something I want to warn you about. I think you have the right if you stay with us for the coming year." And just like that something was off. The entire air of the room seemed to have gotten tenser. She straightened herself. What was coming now? Especially if it got both men so visibly worried. "That… would be?" Ariella asked with no small hesitation.
Kamoshida gave a sigh. "We… have someone with a criminal record at our school."
…
…That's it?
Her posture immediately relaxed. "Okay?"
He raised an eyebrow. "You don't seem disturbed."
"Why should I be?" Ariella shrugged.
The man was startled for a few seconds before catching himself. "I think you're not understanding. This young man was charged guilty of assault." Kamoshida's brows nearly formed into a V so intense was his frown. "He is just criminal scum, attacking some man in the middle of the street. Should have been locked away if you ask me."
Kobayakawa's only reaction was a sigh. "I understand your feelings Mister Kamoshida but he is part of our student body now. And I have made certain to ensure he is aware of what consequences may come his way."
"…Shouldn't you be more understanding?"
Both men reacted as if she had just said the sun was blue, turning to her. "…Pardon me?" Kamoshida asked.
Ariella flinched inwardly. "Geez what's gotten into them all of a sudden?"
"I mean… he did his time right?" she tried to explain her reasoning, "And… aren't schools there to prepare us for the world out there? I'm just saying… give him a chance?"
The silence was heavy at first.
Then Kobayakawa started laughing. Not a joyful laugh… perhaps it could have been that but it was too heavy to be so. Too much… pretending. "Why yes of course! I knew you would fit in here Miss Richter!"
"…What?" she asked deadpan.
Okay what was going on? Just a second ago Ariella was starting to think someone was going to throw something at her. "…Just misjudgement maybe?"
"Well that is exactly why he is here. To be rehabilitated into society. Its why I had chosen to take him in."
…Take in? So he was new?
Wait…
And just like that the joy was gone, replaced with Kobayakawa adjusting the collar of his shirt losing a battle against his body fat. "That being said as much as I HOPE he rehabilitates himself in our care, I don't want to risk the wellbeing of you and our other students. Originally we had decided to keep his record only a secret to the staff, but someone had anonymously posted the information on our website so now all we can do is damage control and try to warn our other students of whom they are associating with."
Sounds an awful lot like ostracization.
"But… why did he do it? Is there more to-?"
"That doesn't matter." A stern voice was raised, and she was stopped.
Kamoshida crossed his arms, looking at her warningly, as if saying to not push the matter. Ariella supressed the urge to take a step back out of instinct. Why did he look so angry all of a sudden?
Another tense silence and he sighed. "Criminal is criminal Ariella-chan. Just… be careful around this Akira Kurusu alright? If anything were to happen to you because-"
She blended out the last part, instead focusing on the name.
Akira Kurusu?
THAT Akira?
"…I don't really want to talk about it. Let's just say I needed to transfer because of issues outside of my control."
She played with the sentence in her head. Yeah a criminal record would definitely be something he wouldn't want to talk about.
That being said… the same boy who was so withdrawn at the beginning of their talk? THAT was supposed to be a dangerous criminal?
It was a bit hard to believe.
"Just… tell us please if he makes you uncomfortable in any way."
"I understand." She lied to his face.
The coach smiled again. "Take care Ariella-chan. Welcome to Shujin."
She nodded. "Thanks. See you tomorrow then.".
"Come to the faculty office tomorrow morning. Miss Kawakami will show you your class and introduce you." The principal added. Ariella nodded once more before waved goodbye and finally escaping from the office.
As soon as she was out of the door she opened her Navigator and searched for a place called Leblanc.
Ariella's curiosity was peaked and even if it killed the cat… her name meant Lion and they were much tougher to kill felines.
It was when the door was closed and a full minute passed that the principal spoke to him, making dead certain that the German brat couldn't hear them anymore.
It was an admittedly good decision because Kamoshida couldn't prevent himself to scream in fury.
"What do you mean with I am supposed to stay away from her!?" he build himself up, hands slammed on the table.
He already saw sweat form on the forehead of the obese principal.
"Mister Kamoshida please try to understand…"
"Understand what!?"
"Miss Richter's time at Shujin is the first in the history of our school that someone from a foreign country is given under our care. Her experience could make or break any future international relationships to partner schools."
Kamoshida scoffed at the reasoning. "So? I mean it's not like anyone of our current students has the guts to say something bad about our school." Our. Yeah right. As if Kamoshida was actually sharing the control. "What makes you think this bitch would be any different?"
"Mister Kamoshida can you even imagine how much time and effort I invested in getting this partnership?! I won't let months of work be ruined by your insatiable libido!" the principals face was red from shouting.
…That was a first.
Kamoshida froze for a moment because really THIS was something he didn't saw coming. In all the time he spent at this school Kobayakawa had NEVER refused him a wish. He covered up for him and bend to his will so easily.
…THIS… was NOT that.
Snapping out of the momentary daze, Kamoshida composed himself, build himself up by pushing out his chest. Domineering, Kamoshida send his best glare down onto the fatty that was with his very existence an insult to his well-toned physique.
"Are you telling me that I don't deserve a reward for making this dump you call a school worthy of being one of the best in Japan?"
And suddenly he was face to face with a blowfish, building himself up to try and met his level. "I am SAYING that between national fame and INTERNATIONAL fame, I choose to pursue the latter out of sheer common sense."
The King of Shujin blinked. "What in the actual fuck?"
Frankly, he was too busy being shocked at this brazen display of… REBELLION towards him to actually be angry.
Perhaps it was visible in his face for the blowfish sighed, seemingly releasing all the air from him and try diplomacy instead of pointless threats against an Alpha of his species. "Please try to understand Mister Kamoshida. I truly value all you have done for our school and you deserve every bit of compensation. But you CAN'T have her. She is our only reliable way to bring Shujin on the radar of people all around the globe. Just imagine the headlines! If this goes well academies from around the world will flock to US. A true beacon of education that will firmly put us on the very top. It's just the next step on the foundation of YOUR hard work."
…Kamoshida crossed his arms letting the argument play in its head.
It was a sound reasoning honestly. They had hit a bit of a limit on what Kamoshida alone could do to further Shujin's reputation. They already had a very prodigious sports team. Even if they win the next tournament it would only really serve to let them keep the position they currently have.
Fame was such a fickle thing, especially on such large levels. He remembered when millions cheered for him on his pedestal.
The very next week these shouts have stopped.
Ungrateful pieces of shit…
Besides… he intended to replace the principal one day anyway. Might as well do it when his school is truly at its peak.
He grunted. "And you had to have it be someone who fits my type? You know I prefer my woman exotic."
Kobayakawa hung his head in shame, rubbing his forehead as he explained. "She was the only one who showed interest and she was perfect. Fluent in Japanese, solidly above-average grades and you heard her yourself list her hobbies."
"Still feels like I'm being teased."
"Try and think of it this way Mister Kamoshida." Kobayakawa started again, "If Miss Richter is able to tell around that her experience as a student of Shujin was not only educational but enjoyable chances are she will not remain the only one."
His eyes perked up at that notion. "Your saying?"
"With one positive review solidifying our standing… we might be able to be more 'lenient' for any future transfers, of which I am sure there will be many once this succeeds." Kobayakawa gave a kind smile towards him, free of any deception or arguing. "Maybe someone from France? Or England? Or Spain? Doesn't that sound more appealing?"
…Oh so THIS was where he was going.
Basically 'turn down a quick snack for a full-blown buffet later'.
…It wasn't an UNAPPEALING idea…
But why should a King not enjoy both? A snack on the side while the buffet is being prepared?
And he oh so hated denying himself.
"Do you understand?" Kobayakawa asked again.
Kamoshida was silent for a little longer… before returning the smile. "I completely understand." He lied as easily as he breathed. "You do spoil me principal."
The fake ruler of Shujin released a breath, visibly relaxed. "It's only right for someone of your standing. I am glad we could reach an agreement. Please, let us ensure she will be able to share a pleasurable experience."
Kamoshida nodded, leaving the office without another word exchanged. As the door was closed he began thinking. "Pleasurable huh?"
For a moment he allowed himself to reflect on his past… exploits.
It had been a while ever since he tried to seduce anybody. The opposite was just far too convenient and so much easier… and arguable more fun.
Alas girls were idiots. The right words at the right time and they see past anything they might have thought ugly, making excuses for their 'love'.
Richter would be no different.
By the end of the year she'd be eating out of the palm of his hand.
And she would DEFINITELY leave a SPLENDID review of her time here.
Kamoshida could already see it before his eyes. This time in a few weeks she'd declare her love to him be oh so happy to spend time with her favourite teacher, doing whatever he said.
The King of Shujin licked his lips.
The coming year would be sure to be… eventful.
For some reason… a cold shudder coursed through Ariella.
"Why do I feel so grossed out all of a sudden?"
The ride back to Leblanc was rather uneventful for Akira. Mostly spend with mindless chatter about accidents and why the Barista took him in to begin with. Sadly it was no less tedious. Was it common for Tokyo to be THIS slow in terms of traffic?
Though their small Street Odyssey came to an end and the two began walking down the walkway towards Leblanc.
Still the old man sighed. "What a pain. Couldn't even open the store for today. Whole Sunday wasted."
Can he try and pretend this wasn't somehow directed at him? "Sorry." He said somewhat half-heartedly.
Sojiro took note. "Geez are you still bummed out?"
Akira didn't reply. Why should he have to? Not like it mattered. Yes he was in fact 'bummed out' that the first person to treat him like a human being since this endless walk of shame that his life had become started, was now the ONE person he was supposed to stay away from.
No matter how many times that thought came to him it never was any less infuriating.
But… maybe it was for the best. Chances are he was just going to drag her down with him.
It would be for the best… if they'd never see each other agai-.
"Hey Akira!"
…Well that didn't last long.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by the girl he was supposed to never see again.
They just now turned into the small alley that lead to Leblanc. In front of its door was a certain glasses-wearing blonde with a blue streak in her hair, looking at both of them expectingly.
Akira walked forward as if on autopilot. "What… are you doing here?"
She seemed… not insulted but confused by the question. "Well you said we'd meet today right? So after I was set free from non-stop school talk I headed here. Arrived just now… as you guys did." She noted with a shrug.
Fortunately Sojiro took over speaking for him. "Didn't expect to see you again so soon."
"Well…" she fidgeted with her feet, "I was also hoping to try out that curry of yours. Do you still open?"
Attention peaked, Akira could all but feel how Sojiro suddenly straightened himself. Barely noticeable quiet later he gave a small chuckle. "Sure. Maybe then I won't have to mourn a complete empty day."
"So, how is it?"
"It's great!" Ariella answered and Akira didn't have it in him to disagree. "Agree there."
The curry was bluntly put DELICIOUS. The mere smell was mouth-watering, but his tastebuds reached nirvana once making contact with the dish itself.
The coffee was no different. It seemed to harmonize with the curry on a level he couldn't quite pinpoint, like two dancers in an empty ballroom. As if the two were literally MADE for one another, their creator spending sleepless nights over how to best ensure their cooperation for the sake of flavor.
And after spending so much time used to prison food… this might as well be the Ambrosia and Amrita of the gods. Hell maybe Sojiro had actually cooked up a divinity or two. Seemed as easy an explanation as any to explain its taste.
The barista gave a gentle smile. He really was a completely different person when treating customers.
Ariella had pretty much slapped a few bills on the counter, for herself and him to the raven's surprise, deciding to treat him on a whim.
"I had time to go to the Bank today. Figured I'd try out my new account." She said as if that was an explanation.
Soon enough they began digging in like starving wolves into their food, while occasionally slurping the steaming coffee next to the plate. Ari's had so much sugar in it he wasn't sure if there was more coffee in it than sweetener.
The transfers took their last bite and slurp, leaving empty plates and cups. "Definitely worth the wait." She remarked.
"Always happy to hear from a customer." Sojiro spoke warmly. If he thought any bit about how she might never come back here again, it didn't show.
Ariella smiled in the barista's direction, before turning back to himself. "So how was your introduction?"
"Best described as 'verbal whipping number 22'."
"I managed." He shrugged, not quite willing to give more information. "What about you?"
She gave a sigh of pure exhaustion. "They were pretty nice but it went on for WAY too long. He kept going on about Shujin's history I could have flown back to Europe and he'd still not be done."
He cringed "My condolences." It still sounded better than what he had. The grass was always greener on the other side though…
Ariella shrugged "I survived didn't I? Tomorrow is gonna be the real test." Her eyes, mismatched and sticking out with the green and gold, sparked a little before leaning forward. "Oh yeah I've been meaning to ask you something."
"What is it?" Akira questioned absentminded.
"Do you have a criminal record?"
Only to have his whole world shattered with one ask. His eyes were ripped open and he could only stare at the girl in front of him, his mouth going dry.
"I-" he stammered out.
Sojiro was frozen as well, smile wiped away and looking rapidly between the two students.
"I… uhh…" he continued to be incapable of bringing out a proper sentence. How in the world did she KNEW? Did-did the principal tell her?
"Is… everything okay?" she asked, still peace itself but brows furrowed.
Criminal trash.
Worthless Delinquent.
Society reject.
"How do you… know?" finally he forced out something resembling proper language, sounding like a broken instrument doing so.
Ariella looked as if hit by a truck, turning to Sojiro, who didn't dare met either of their eyes and instead focused solely on drying a plate. Oh God was she looking for help? Had just him confirming it terrified her?
"Hurry! He's coming this way!"
"Don't look at him he might slug you!"
She turned back to him, he couldn't read her. Alright here we go, the next tirade about how monstrous he was. That he was disgusting and how he was even let out. That he should just be left in the gutter to waste away.
Nothing could have prepared him for her answer.
"Someone posted it on the schools website?"
THE WEBSITE!?
He didn't even knew they HAD a Website!
Instantly Akira tore out his phone and looked up Shujin. A few clicks later… all she had said was true. A gigantic post regarding a Transfer Student named Akira Kurusu and how he served time in prison.
It was happening again.
His entire life was torn from beneath his feet AGAIN!
Tokyo was supposed to be a fresh start! Akira GENUINELY BELIEVED IT. But NO! the Universe just KEEPS finding ways to screw him over!
"…Akira?"
He continued glaring at the post. Why? Why did it have to happen again? Who had to out him? Who had to strip him of whatever chance for peace he could get in this city?
Psychopath.
Scum.
Demon.
"Akira."
He was never going to escape this. Now and forever, for the rest of his life, he would be nothing but garbage and he just couldn't ESCAPE. No future, no family, no friends, no home…
Criminal Trash.

"AKIRA!"
Someone shouted at him. He flinched internally, only to have someone grab his hands, both of them with a gentle grip.
In disbelief he stared at them, following their arms…
To Ariella who looked at him with concern.
No hate. No disgust. No fear… just concern.
"Breath." She told him gently.
He did, unable to deny her.
Why… why was she…
"Feeling better?"
He slowly nodded, to her relief. "Thank God. You looked like you were about to have a panic attack."
…Not inaccurate.
He put his phone away, unable to look the blonde in the eye.
"…I'm sorry."
…Did-Did she just APOLOGIZE?
He forced himself to look her in the eyes. "What?"
"I didn't know this was such a serious topic. Didn't think before bringing it up. Sorry about-"
"Why?"
Ariella looked perplexed. "Why what?"
"Why do you care?" he nearly pleaded, unable to understand what was happening right now.
The German looked just as helpless. "Why SHOULDN'T I care? You were freaking out I couldn't just ignore that!"
Akira studied her face. There was no hint of a lie or a deception. She was… genuinely confused.
"…And about… me having a record?"
The blonde's shoulder sagged, letting a sigh escape her. She didn't meet his face, only starring down at the stains of the plate…
Only to look back up at him with a smile, speaking the four beautiful words Akira had heard. "Why does it matter?"
She… really didn't care?
He stared at her, mind blank and unable to comprehend this spectacle in front of him. "Y-You're not afraid or disgusted or-?"
"No!" she interrupted him, concern once again consuming her face. "I mean… okay so you've done something bad. Who hasn't done something illegal now and then? I mean what did you even do?"
"NOTHING!" he wanted to shout.
He swallowed it down. "I was sentenced guilty of assaulting a man. But it was a misunderstanding. He only tripped on me and hit his forehead on the concrete. I never attacked him but the police thought different when they arrived." The full story was stuck in his throat, for some reason not wanting to come out.
Green and gold, behind two lenses looked into his silver mirrors, as if she read his soul. "Okay that… sucks. I am sorry to hear that."
His brain was officially overwhelmed. "You… believe me?"
Ariella merely shrugged, seemingly unaware what she was doing to him. "You haven't given me any reason not to."
It was as if a choir of angels came down on him, with trumpets to announce their glory. A weight so heavy it threatened to drag him to hell feel of his heart and he could FEEL the relief filling the empty space.
Akira laughed. It wasn't a loud laugh, but an amused heartfelt chuckle fuelled by something he hadn't quite been able to explain right now. Silver looked into green and yellow. "Thank you."
There was it again the bewilderment, only to give way to amusement as she chuckled too. "What for?"
"Do you have any idea how people act around me when they hear of my record? They either avoid me altogether or treat me like I killed their dog."
Behind her own glasses he could see the impact of his revelation. "…That's awful." There it was again. Sympathy oh dear friend how Akira had missed you!
He chuckled again. "Yeah. Hoped to get a break here in Tokyo…" his mood faltered a little remembering the post on the website. "But that isn't an option."
She didn't look at him, instead focusing on the now empty cub and the mosaic of coffee stains within as she played with her hair. "I mean not NECESSARILY. Even if the teachers acted weird this doesn't mean the students will."
Akira sighed. Her naivety was equal parts refreshing and saddening "I doubt that."
"Why? I mean… look I don't know if that's a Japanese thing but at the school I was there was also a 'criminal'. He was caught beating up a guy threatening his girlfriend. No one treated him like… THIS." She emphasized the last word, as if to drive home how unusual it was.
Akira blinked at the news. "…Talk about cultural differences then. Let's just say Japan as a more… condemning view on these things."
"I guess? I mean it's not like NOBODY cares where I'm from but not to the degree where your scum just for getting in a fight."
Now it was his turn to shrug. "You're still being pretty casual about this."
Ari was silent for a bit. He grew briefly worried, but it was taken away when she gave him a smirk.
"Well…" her gaze had something… dangerous in it. "I have SOME experience with less savory things. I happened to get involved in a pretty big fight back in my old school."
He raised a brow in intrigue "Really?"
"There was a girl that was being a bitch to a friend of mine and STARTED it all. I only made sure to END it."
He felt like howling with laughter. "Oh no, it's like a nightmare I am having dinner with a psychopath."
The blonde cackled like a Witch "You wouldn't mess with a Lion if you don't want to get mauled right?"
"Should have put you in the Zoo."
"Right next to your Cell?"
"Nah. I'm not an Animal I'm a Demon."
"Know Mephisto by any chance then?"
"The guy doesn't want anything to do with me, I'm too scary for him."
And suddenly the two devolved into a pack of Hyenas, howling with laughter over… things so nonsensical. It was stupid and illogical and downright childish, it shouldn't even be able to make you laugh.
He started to feel like a teenager again.
Someone clearing their throat broke their brief laugh flash. Sojiro looked at them with a neutral, albeit somewhat forced expression, reminding them both of his existence, even if he almost seemed to fade away for the last two minutes. "I'm… glad you two get along. But it is getting late and I was going to close up shop soon."
Ariella nodded at the barista in acknowledgment. "Alright. Probably should go home anyway." She stood up from her seat and so did he. "See you tomorrow at school then?" she asked/offered.
"Now this should go without saying, but if you cause any troubles for her you will be expelled without hesitation. Do I make myself clear?"
Akira thought it over, settling on telling her outright. "I was told to stay away from you."
He could see the wheels turn in her brain… settling on her playing with her hair and giving a shrug. "So was I. Had to promise them to report you if you make me and I quote: 'uncomfortable'. You're not getting on my nerves yet though so you're good." She finished with a joke.
He presented her with a snicker. It was… refreshing.
And for a bit he couldn't care about principal goldfish threats. "I aim to keep it this way then."
Ari gave him a last smile before walking towards the door with a steady step. "See you tomorrow Akira."
And she was gone, off into the Tokyo night. A fellow stranger in a whole new world, going on her own journey much like him.
Akira hoped she'd have an easier time… even if she put the shackle that was himself on her.
"…She really is a nice girl." Sojiro commented.
"Yeah." Akira agreed. He was about ready to head back to his 'room' when his guardian stopped him again. "Hey Kid."
"Hm?" the 'delinquent' nearly dared to the older man. "Go ahead. TRY to make me feel bad right now."
"…Be careful okay?"
"Huh?"
It seemed the question marks all but popped up around him for Sojiro elaborated. "The school still has it out for you. Even if she doesn't mind more than enough people will. Just keep your head down when something comes up and don't antagonize anyone even further."
"Are you not going to tell me to stay away from her?"
Sakura frowned… but for once Akira was willing to bet it wasn't at him. In contrast. It almost had something… apologetic? "I say you two get along pretty well and if she WANTS to be around you even knowing of your record… well that's not something to take for granted. People are judgmental so anyone who CHOOSES your company even knowing your past isn't something to throw away."
That little fact had been drilled into him. "I am aware."
Sojiro sighed. "Look… I just wanna say that if things start going badly for you, don't drag those around you down with you."
"I won't."
He accepted the answer but continued before Akira could go. "One last thing. Try and focus on your breathing the next time you have a panic attack. Imagining a place of comfort goes a long way as well."
…Well the surprises just pile up today don't they?
"…Thanks."
Sojiro looked like he wanted to add something else but closed his mouth as soon as he opened it... before giving him a look that was almost warm. "Sleep well kid. You have a long day ahead of you. Try to enjoy it at least."
Unsure of how to react, the raven nodded before finally being allowed to go up the stairs.
He had a feeling the coming year was going to be… eventful.
Everything was dark. Where was she?
"…koto…"
A voice. It sounded familiar.
"…Makoto…"
Makoto? Was that her?
"MAKOTO!"
Her vision returned.
Makoto Niijima opened her eyes with a groan. Immediately a hand went to her head, trying to somehow sooth the pulsing in her skull via touch.
It was then that her senses came back in full, informing her of her surroundings.
Her mouth was filled with a numb taste, or rather no taste at all. She must have slept for a while.
Her eyes saw into the clean white ceiling of… a hospital?
Her hand felt a bandage placed on her forehead. Not big but enough for three of her fingers to take place on it.
Her nose woke a memory. That perfume… her sister used it.
And her ears…
"Makoto!" the voice of her sister rang through it.
Turning her head to the side she was face to face with the only blood relative she had left. She wasn't able to see much of her though because she immediately latched onto her, before she could even stand up from the hospital bed.
Out of instinct she hugged back. Her shirt was getting wet. Were those… tears?
Okay something was wrong. Sae NEVER cried in front of her. Makoto wasn't even sure if Sae COULD cry. The last time she had seen it was when their dad…
Sae broke the hug and looked her in the eyes. Now Makoto could see the red in her eyes and the not completely dried tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Sis." She said. Not quite sure what else to do other than acknowledge her presence. "What… happened?"
"You have a Guardian Angel that's what happened." A new voice called to them and both sisters turned to a man next to Makoto's bed. Slick black hair and a doctors mantle gave her all she needed to know.
"Guardian Angel?"
The Doctor seemed solemn. "You were involved in a Train accident Miss Niijima. There are a lot of injured victims. You are one of the luckier ones. Only a hit to the head and losing consciousness."
Train accident?
Oh right… now she remembered. She was surrounded by men and women on every side, somehow sandwiching her in between the masses.
They were getting into the station but the train wasn't stopping.
And then… nothing.
"What were you even doing in there?!" Sae almost shouted in Makoto's face, her own still pale with worry. In an odd sense… it was touching. This was more attention Sis had paid to her in months. Maybe years.
Makoto still held her head. "I… was called in by Kobayakawa. He wanted me to appear on Sunday morning. Something about a transfer student?"
Oh right. He wanted her to give one of the transfers a walk through the school. Only one for some reason. It wasn't something Makoto was eager to do… but she wasn't about to turn the educator down over such a simple request. She knew Kobayakawa gave his all for their school, the least she could do was support him now and then.
It… didn't look like she would arrive on time if the evening sun out of their window was any suggestion.
Sae gave a sigh, still clutching her arms a bit too much, just a little more and she would get even more bruises. She seemed to struggle to come up with the right words. In the end, the silver-haired prosecutor turned to the Doctor. "Is she stable? Can I take her with me?"
He gave a warm smile. "She is fine. Like I said her Angel did good work. Just a few bruises. I suggest bed rest for a while and time to recuperate."
Everything happened in a blur then. Sae took her by the hand as if they were small children again and dragged her out of the hospital. As they passed, Makoto caught glances of other patients. Some were treated. Some just now waking up and a flock of nurses and doctors hurried all over the place, scrambling to save more lives.
It was at latest by the point where Makoto would have arrived home, her sister finally feeling safe enough to let her go, having nearly paid more attention to her than the road, and when seeing a news report on the accident itself that she realized how lucky she had been.
"You're taking the week of." Her sister had decreed, making it clear there was no room for arguments.
Makoto didn't fight her decision.
I don't know what it is with me and writers block lately. This chapter and next one for Round Two just drag on… or well dragged on in this case. Past tense.
Not really satisfied with how it ended but at this point I just wanted to get it out and not break my 'Update one thing per month' schedule so soon after making it.
For the most part this is just more set up. Typical Persona slow start. But I had some time to dive a little into the differences regarding how Shujin receives its transfers.
I mentioned it before but I am trying to show both of them as foils. Starting with their stay at Shujin.
Akira is a 'criminal' and… well the canon scenes speak for themselves. Everyone has their eyes on him and he is treated with a lot of suspicion.
Ari meanwhile is at Shujin for completely different reasons. As such Kobayakawa would pretend to be a decent human being for once and drag everyone along with it.
One is treated with scorn and neglect while the other basically drowns in fake pleasantries.
Sojiro and Tora are similar. Sojiro is still distant towards Akira while Tora actually distances himself. The only reason he didn't go with Ari into Shujin was because of the whole 'No Good Tora' Situation as you probably guessed.
Moving on with Kamoshida…
It was… uncomfortable to get into Kamoshidas POV to say the least. But Ariella pretty much directly falls into his 'type' if his obsession with Ann is anything to go by. But the principal managed to reign him in with promises… how long that's gonna help remains to be seen. Who knows what his Shadow thinks of Ari.
And speaking of Kamoshida... people like him get away with their shit because off good publicity among other things. So unfortunately Kawakami doesn't think of him as anything other than a effective teacher who likes his job. Felt... lets say 'weird' to write.
Finally Akira and Ariella talk again in Leblanc. She knows about his record but not the details… which isn't enough to turn her away this time.
Persona 5 is mostly a game about Japanese society and highlights its worst aspects. The insane conviction rate is one thing, as if public perception of someone with a criminal record. Tv Tropes has a whole section regarding 'Values Dissonance' if anyone is curious. It does a pretty good job at explaining some things western players might miss.
Another advantage of having a non-Japanese character take part in this game. A complete outside view on the issues in Tokyo's society. Having a criminal record or having done something illegal in a western country… okay it would gain you a few stares and questions but it would not be on the same levels as the sheer disgust Akira has to deal with at Shujin. Lets be honest think of your own school time… would Akira have been treated like this back if he would have been in your class? Or would he have been the 'cool bad boy' or anything along these lines.
As such Ariella is more… lets say openminded. And Akiras first reaction and first impression also did a good job of ensuring that.
And as a result Sojiro shows a LITTLE bit of his coffee dad tendencies. He just saw the 'delinquent' nearly have a freak out after all. That was bound to remind him of Futaba and someone else showing her support might affect him as well. The first butterflies are flapping their wings. Praise Chaos Theory.
…Oh right one last thing. Another butterfly.
Regarding that bit about Makoto… I originally thought about a scene where Ari would get a tour from Makoto… than I remembered Makoto uses the subway and what ELSE happens on April the 10th.
I feel like there are a few people by now who think I have some sort of grudge against Makoto by now. But don't worry she is fine, she simply wont play that big of a role in the Kamoshida arc… like in canon only this time with a better justification I hope.
Alright with that said I hope you enjoyed the chapter. Gonna go back to working on the next chapter soon. Whether it is here or on a different fic of mine, have a nice day and see ya :).
