Fatima and Rountree were sitting at a table in ops when Fatima realized that Rountree was staring at her. She was a little confused, but she definitely didn't mind. She batted her eyelashes and bit her lip, then slowly looked back down at her laptop. She could still feel his eyes on her, and she smiled a little.
"Rountree?" she asked sweetly. Rountree said nothing, seemingly not hearing her. Fatima giggled and gently chucked her pen at him. Rountree jumped and yelped a little.
"What?!" he asked.
"You were ignoring me!" she protested. Rountree shook his head quickly, as if he was clearing his thoughts.
"Sorry. I zoned out," he replied.
"Staring at me?" Fatima asked. Rountree blushed and looked down.
"Um, it's just that-" he began.
"I'm beautiful and you got a little distracted?" she asked sweetly. Rountree blushed and looked down. He nodded a little and looked up at her again. "What's up?" she asked.
"Um, can I ask you something really personal?" he asked quietly.
"Sure. What's up?" she asked.
"You, um, you have a scar on your cheek and forehead," he whispered. Fatima paled.
"That I do not want to talk about," she whispered, her voice suddenly hollow and scared. Devin kicked himself internally.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" he began, desperate to make her feel better.
"No, no. It's okay. I said you could ask. It's just not something I'm ready to talk about. Okay?" she asked softly.
"Of course. Are you okay, though?" he asked gently.
"Yeah. I'm going to run to the bathroom, okay? I'll be right back," she whispered, fighting back tears. She ran out of ops and down the stairs. Devin was furious with himself for making her so upset.
