Hey guys, I'm back. So, I do wanna preface with the fact that this chapter might feel pretty all over the place, because after what lunacy happened last chapter, I felt like we needed a chance to calm down and have an easygoing chapter. On another note, since there is going to be a good amount of stuff happening both in and on the route before Goldenrod, you guys can effectively consider this a 'Part 1' of sorts. We'll get to Part 2 when we get to it.

I want to say beforehand that this chapter, along with being very all over the place, will have some of my own liberties on backstories and characters. Mostly just stuff to try and make this world feel like a real place, and so I sometimes go into some heavy stuff. I hope you guys like what I come up with.

Also I wanna say thank you for last chapter's success. We got a lot of traffic and a lot of reviews. I can only hope that from here out I continue to keep your guys' attention and keep you guys excited for uploads.

And lastly, I've decided to start listing the Eggs in Party Data, with their patterns and how close they are to hatching. So feel free to theorize what you think will come out of each egg, and we'll see if you are right.

Anyway, review time!

wiifan2002: Well, glad I finally got your attention. Don't worry, I always had this point planned on, and there is no way in hell I'm going to let Johnny become a joke villain, nevermind the Kankers. They'll be a real threat, that much I'll make sure of somehow.

Shogun lord poke burst: That probably is the most practical turn of events, yeah. Being perfectly honest, I don't know how I'd feel of a weirdo wearing a squash on his head threatened me with a pitchfork. I'm not sure if I'd be afraid or laughing.

The Afterdreamer: Glad you liked it.

Playerhood18: Very true. Whitney does tend to be a wall for certain types of teams. It's why I go out of my way to trade for the Machop most playthroughs, or get my hands on a Geodude.

Engineer1869: ... I hate to say it, but that's actually a great idea XD

maxileyba954: Glad you liked it

Insane Dominator: Yeah, I'm actually making great headway. Unfortunately my days are filled with study and a new job right now, so I can't just write until my fingers fall off, but I am very happy with my progress.

The thrill of battle was lost on Nazz van Bartonschmeer, even as she watched her fellow Cul-De-Sac kids face stronger and stronger opponents. Why someone would want to watch their pets fight like that was beyond her, and even crazier was the fact that it was an actual sport.

But regardless, she cheered her friends on as they battled their hearts out.

Currently, the party was on Route 34, only a short walk away from the upcoming Goldenrod City, after an hour or so of travel through the Ilex Forest and past the day care. Even though they were now one member higher due to their newest travelling companion forcibly inviting that 'Silver' boy, the trek hadn't been anything too special. In fact, if anything, she'd dare say she was getting used to it.

And so were the others, as despite everything, they still continued to battle.

An agreement had been reached, where Ryuji and Gold headed forward into town first. Both said they had a few things to handle, and so, that left the others behind to battle a bit.

Right now, it was Kevin vs Silver. And so, Nazz got her and her Pokemon to play cheer squad.

Currently, Silver was winning the fight, in part thanks his Gastly's Hypnosis earlier leaving a mark on Ekans, as well as Zubat's showing against Spinarak. Currently it was Croconaw, bearing a set of 'Black Glasses' and attacking Kevin's Gastly with great vigor. It looked bad, but for some reason, Kevin seemed supremely confident regardless.

And seeing Kevin so confident made Nazz happy.

Her Pokemon however, not so much.

From the sidelines, as the battle continued onward, Sentret watched in great envy as the two evolved Pokemon duked it out. Here before him were two examples of how Pokemon got stronger through battle, and yet here he was, forced to watch from the sidelines…

"(Why are we even here?)" Sentret grumbled. "(We're not doing anything on this adventure.)"

"(That's not true)," Caterpie told him, trying her best to stay optimistic. "(Morale is an important part of battle, my friend.)"

"(We're reduced to a cheer squad while other trainers battle right in front of us? How is that fair!?)"

Popplio rolled her eyes. "(Okay, I know it's not ideal, but look at it this way. We've got a loving owner, we get free meals, and we're surrounded by friends. What more could you ask for?)"

"(The ability to evolve?)" Sentret deadpanned.

Popplio had no response, doubly so upon seeing that Caterpie had a similar look in her eyes.

"(Listen, let's just do what we were sent out to do)," Mareep said, trying to keep a level head despite everything. "(No need to be at each other's throats over something beyond our control.)"

Sentret let out an annoyed 'hmph' in response and went back to cheering with Nazz. Everyone in the scene could tell his heart wasn't in it, but there was very little they could actually do in regard to that. And so, they simply watched.

"Croconaw! Use Bite!"

Before Kevin could respond, the crocodilian rushed forward and chomped down on Gastly's body, throwing it back to Kevin with incredible force. Gastly fell to the ground, completely exhausted, and the confident grin of his trainer faded slightly.

"(Grr…)" Gastly slurred, "(You're tougher than you look, you bastard…)"

Croconaw glared at him. "(I can always attack again, you old geezer!)"

"Gastly, return!"

Kevin's Ghost Type grumbled as he was forced to return to his Poke Ball. As soon as he was returned, another was sent out: Grovyle, Kevin's last bastion in a fight like this.

"(Hmph… you're done)," Grovyle said. "(Water doesn't beat Grass, after all.)"

"(How arrogant)," Croconaw sneered. "(I'll break you!)"

Without hesitating, Silver ordered Croconaw to use a move called 'Ice Fang', prompting Kevin to tell his Grovyle to use Mega Drain. Naturally, Kevin's starter moved first, using his power to siphon a good chunk of energy from his opponent.

Unfortunately, being slower worked to Croconaw's benefit, as Silver's starter struck with glowing blue fangs, sinking right into Grovyle's flesh. Grovyle let out a pained cry as the sheer cold dealt an overwhelming amount of damage.

"Grovyle, hang in there!" Kevin said, holding his Poke Ball in worry. "Don't let him beat you!"

"You're a bit late on that," Silver smirked. "I'm the one in control now! Croconaw, don't let go!"

The overwhelming cold was too much, as Grovyle felt his stamina drained completely. Once Silver saw his opponent go limp, he let Croconaw relent, and watched as Kevin was horrified to see his ace Pokemon one-hit KO-ed.

"Hmph…" Silver said, calling his Pokemon back. "Pathetic."

"What the heck was that!?" exclaimed Kevin, clenching his fists. "How'd you beat my Grovyle so easily!?"

"You're just weak," Silver answered simply. "And I despise the weak. Pokemon, Trainers, doesn't matter. I hate them all."

"God, you sound like one of Ed's generic edgy comics," Eddy groaned, earning the ire of Silver.

"What was that, runt?"

"You heard me, you punk-rock wannabe! You sound like some pre-teen going through his goth phase!"

Everyone took a tentative step back, feeling the glare shared between both Eddy and Silver.

"… Hmph. I look forward to making you eat those words." Silver told Eddy.

To this, Eddy pulled out his Poke Ball. "Then let's go, right here, right now!"

Silver shook his head, contracting his Poke Ball and walking forward. "I can't do it right now, idiot," Silver said. "I'll deal with you at some point. But for now, you're far from strong enough to beat me."

And before anyone could say anything else, Silver headed forward, pushing past the remaining two Eds toward Goldenrod City in the distance. The other members of the party were left to consider his words, as well as to quell a seething Eddy.

"Who does that jackass think he is!?"

"Presumably an exceptionally strong trainer, Eddy," Double D mused, fiddling with his Pokedex. "His Croconaw knew an Ice Type move, and I highly doubt he's much higher level than we are."

"But then how'd it do so much damage?" Eddy asked. "I thought you scanned Croconaw earlier and it didn't have that much Special Attack."

"No no, Eddy. There are Physical Attacking Ice Type moves in this world, remember? I presume that a move that's effectively an Ice Type Bite would be such a move."

To this, Eddy looked away, slightly embarrassed. He was still used to the idea of types universally hitting either on the Physical or Special end of things. It seemed so obvious, but he was still suffering from the fact that this was only his fourth day here, and everything had still yet to all come together.

"Honestly, I'm quite impressed. Croconaw seems like quite the effective…"

Double D stopped dead in his tracks, catching the attention of the entire party, as they saw him go wide-eyed in some combination of shock and horror. No one needed to ask, for only a second later, he exclaimed his issue to them:

"Water… Type… oh, god! I forgot to pick up a Slowpoke!"

Eddy raised an eyebrow. "A Slowpoke? Why, do we want his tails for food?"

"No, Eddy," Double D explained. "I simply wanted a Water Type on my team. And Slowpoke is both sufficiently bulky and has an incredible secondary Psychic Typing."

"And you forgot, dude?" Kevin asked.

"Can you blame me? The last couple of days have been quite the experience."

No one denied that fact, and Double D sighed in frustration.

"Good lord, how am I going to find the time while caring for Togepi?" He questioned, looking to the Poke Ball on his side. "She's still a baby, and she needs someone to watch her."

"I could do it," offered Nazz.

Double D was about to respond, before Eddy spoke up for him.

"Hell no! You throw parties when you babysit! No way that'll end well!"

"Come on Eddy, I've gotten a lot better since then." Nazz protested. "I promise, I'll take care of the little dude."

"… I will reluctantly take your word for it, Nazz," Double D said. "Later tonight, I'll do some night fishing with Rolf, and return with a Water Type that I'm happy with. During that time, I expect you to care for Togepi to the best of your abilities. Sound fair?"

"Totally, dude. I promise I'll keep her safe and happy."

From the left, the party heard a light chuckle. From the direction Silver left, they saw an old woman approaching, a small basket on her arm with an oddly pink Egg within. Eddy groaned.

"Jeez, EVERYONE has eggs, don't they!?"

"Eggs are good for you, Eddy," Ed said happily. "And they're yummy on a slice of buttered toast!"

"Well said, young man," the old lady commented. "Though I will say, this Egg I have no intention of frying. It's rather close to hatching, actually."

"Really?" Nazz asked, looking at it. "Do you know what's in it?"

The old woman shook her head. "It simply appeared in our Day Care one day. I was never certain where it came from, but we've taken care of it all the same. However, my husband and I are too old and too busy to take care of a newborn Pokemon."

"Well, I could do it?" Nazz offered again, this time shocking herself with this bold request.

"Would you be willing to?"

"Sure. I'm a babysitter back home. I can take care of whatever comes out of it."

"I see... well, okay then. I think I will give you a chance."

Nazz approached the Day Care lady, and with a quick gentle exchange, took the basket in her hands. She looked the egg over, noting its uniformly pink shell. She had no idea what kind of egg it was, but just looking at it made her curious. It was a new party member, and whatever it was, she would be sure to treat it as well as she could.

"I hope you like whatever is in it," the Day Care lady told her. "Nothing makes me happier than when a trainer is happy with a Pokemon they hatch. If you're ever in need, our day care is open to you and your friends."

And without another word, the old lady began her trek back to the Day Care, leaving Nazz to focus on her newest future Pokemon.

"Wow, today really has just been an adventure, hasn't it?" Double D mused, more than a little entertained at the notion of how much has happened today. "And it's not even noon yet. We still have plenty of time to get to Goldenrod City."

"Should we get moving then?" Kevin asked. "Ryuji said we should explore some, but I wanna see a big city."

"I'm up for that. I haven't seen anything out here that I wanna catch," Eddy chimed in.

Double D glanced ahead, seeing the massive city ahead of them, and felt almost conflicted. Part of him wanted to stay behind and see what there was to see, but at the same time, the others seemed ready to move on.

But finally, he shrugged, since he knew he would be back here later.

"Very well then. Onward!"

And with that, they began their trek forward toward the city.

15 minutes and another battle or two later, and the Cul-De-Sac kids were finally within the incredible Goldenrod City. A bustling metropolis next to the sea, granting everyone another taste of that salty sea air they'd last tasted in Cherrygrove. Trucks were parked out in the road with a few people discussing things here and there. Pidgey hung upon the streetlamps and Machoke moved boxes from a truck toward what was perhaps the tallest department store anyone in the party had ever seen.

It was easily the farthest cry from their old Cul-De-Sac they'd seen yet, and infinitely more amazing than even the false city the Eds had made.

"Rolf is amazed!" Rolf declared, taking in his surroundings. "The hustle and bustle of this modern village is a sight to see!"

"This city would be perfect for a Godzilla movie!" Ed said happily.

"I think they actually did use it for one. Kinda wild to see a mutant Tyranitar destroying this place."

Everyone's attention was brought over to the source of that familiar voice, and a smile of relief washed over them. Approaching fast were Ryuji and Gold, with no sight of Silver. Not that the last one really mattered, considering he wasn't officially a member of the group.

"Sorry about rushing ahead," Gold said. "We just wanted to get to the police station ASAP."

Eddy raised an eyebrow. "Police station? You didn't mention that."

Gold shrugged. "Didn't feel I needed to. But yeah, you got attacked by a lunatic with a pitchfork you said, so we filed a police report. Officers said they'd keep an eye out, and they want your testimony. They'd also like your Pokedex too since they usually keep record of your victories and losses."

"Ugh, really?"

"Look, you can never be too safe," Ryuji told him. "From what you said, this Johnny guy sounds like he'll do whatever it takes to get his revenge."

"Well yeah, Johnny's a weirdo like that." Eddy admitted. "I didn't think he was frickin' insane, but still."

"Well, I'll lead you to the police station and Officer Jenny can get your testimony," Gold told him, before turning to Ryuji. "You comin'?"

"Nah… I gotta go make a phone call."

"Ooh. Someone important? A friend perhaps, or maybe an old rival? Possibl-"

It was at this moment that Double D's patience reached its limits. He grabbed Gold by the shoulder, and looked him in the eye, his expression mildly annoyed, but trying to be polite.

"Do you think we could talk in private before you go?" He asked. "There's something I'd like to ask about."

Gold was a bit surprised, but nodded all the same.

And with that, they left the main group for a bit, heading over to an alleyway.

"So uh… what'd you wanna talk about?"

"I've seemed to notice you've made a habit of getting on Ryuji's case," Double D explained, his green eyes meeting Gold's… well, Golden eyes. "Is there any particular reason why you like to hound him most of all?"

Gold shrugged. "What can I say? He makes it easy?"

"Hardly. You just seem to like to insinuate things about him. I get WHY, believe me, but you're being rather rude by not respecting his privacy."

"… Wait, you know?"

Double D nodded. "I'm extremely convinced, yes. But I've yet to say anything, because if he hasn't said it, then it isn't my place to say otherwise."

"I guess that makes sense," Gold rubbed the back of his head. "Look, I don't mean any disrespect by it. He's just fun to mess with."

"Well for the love of all things good, find something else to make fun of. He's your friend, right?"

To this, Gold nodded.

"Well good friends don't disrespect their friends' privacy."

"I'm not gonna stop teasing him about it," Gold told Double D, a smug grin on his face. "But I'm not gonna say anything directly either. That's his choice."

A sigh of irritation escaped Double D's lips, but he relented all the same. "I suppose that's all I can ask of you. Now then, let's return to the others."

And with that, the two made their way back to where the rest of their crew was.

"So, you guys good?" Ryuji asked innocently.

"Yeah," Double D said. "We just had an important issue that needed addressing."

"Well great. I've changed my mind, I'm gonna lead Eddy to the police station, and when we get back, we'll go clothes shopping."

"Sounds good," Gold said. "Then I'mma go hit the gym. Knowing Silver, he's already there making Akane cry."

"What, not gonna wait for us, dude?" Kevin asked.

"Nope. But thanks for reminding me, I forgot to mention. I'm leaving for a while."

The group went silent at that, shocked to hear that they were being ditched. He had been so eager to join them, and now he wanted to leave? For how long, and why?

Well, Jimmy was the first to ask, and Gold was more than happy to answer.

"I've got some business to handle up in Ecruteak City," Gold explained. "I have someone I wanna visit, and it's really important. A special day is coming up and… I wanna be there by then."

This was not the answer they were expecting, and especially not with that tone. They were used to a very smug Gold, supremely confident and unafraid of everything. But this one, he sounded… almost sad. It was certainly different, but he shook it off soon.

"I'll still be in town for a while, probably over by the radio tower if you losers wanna chat. But I'll be gone before sunset, and probably be back in two days."

"Is it something bad?" Ed asked.

"Nah. Just visiting an old friend, and it can't wait."

The others nodded at his explanation, and Double D in particular kept his eyes on Gold. He made a silent vow to talk to the boy again before he left.

And with nothing left to do, the others split apart for a bit, planning to make use of their time extremely well.

Beedrill flew high in the sky, eagerly enjoying the feeling of the wind on his chitin. The group had found a small area where trainers were allowed to send their Pokemon out for some fresh air, and currently, the Bug Type was milking this for all it was worth. He knew he wouldn't get to battle very frequently, due to his trainer's aversion to him, but any chance to be outside his Poke Ball was worth it.

"(Lookin' good, old friend!)"

Heading that, Beedrill glanced down, his large red eyes glancing down to find a wonderful sight to see. And so, he rushed downward from the sky, right to her.

"(Caterpie!)" he buzzed eagerly. "(It's so good to see you, buddy!)"

"(Right back at you, big guy,)" Caterpie chirred happily, crawling over slowly. "(You look so nice as a Beedrill, you know that?)"

"(Thanks,)" Beedrill looked away, slightly embarrassed at the praise. "(I think I'm a pretty nice example of my species.)"

"(I agree. You look wonderful.)"

"(And the best part is I can fly now!)"

Eager to show off his favorite part of Evolution, Beedrill buzzed around, riding the sky like he was born a Pidgeot. Caterpie watched, a disappointed glint in her eyes. A glint that Beedrill noticed as he got back.

"(Hey… what's wrong, Caterpie?)"

The first-form Bug Type sighed. "(You're lucky, Beedrill. Even with Jimmy not liking Bug Types, you still managed to reach your final stage. Meanwhile my trainer refuses to even battle with me.)"

A twinge of sadness ran through Beedrill as he heard that. "(You poor thing.)"

"(It didn't bother me at first, unlike Sentret. But after seeing everyone else get stronger I'm… well, I'm just starting to get disappointed. I REALLY want to become a Butterfree! I wanna join you and our other friends in the sky!)"

Several thoughts ran through the Poison Type's head at hearing that. He never knew his friend felt that way. She always seemed so content with her place in this big setup they had. But apparently not. She wanted to join him in the sky, and he wished he could give her that.

… Actually, maybe he could.

In an instant, Beedrill turned around, getting on his back limbs and using his forelimbs to anchor him to the ground. "(Hop on my back and hold on tight. Before we leave, I'll give you a taste of what you want!)"

Caterpie was shocked. "(R-really? You'd do that for me?)"

"(Of course. We might not get this chance again for a while. Let's do it while we can!)"

Happily, Caterpie crawled onto the back of her larger friend, and make sure she was perfectly spaced, offering him ample space to flap his wings. And before she knew it, she was up in the air. The sudden shift in height took a moment to get used to, but as soon as she saw the others looking up at her, she felt so happy. So excited. So POWERFUL.

In an instant, her fate was sealed. This is what Caterpie wanted, and she had to get it somehow. If Nazz would not give it to her, she would do it herself. She had no intention of abandoning her trainer, but if she could get away and train with Beedrill, then she would.

But for now, she was going to enjoy this…

"BEEDRILL! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?"

… Or so she thought.

Hearing the shrill piercing scream of his trainer, Beedril left the sky, and came back down, only to let Caterpie off. Jimmy looked more irritated than scared.

"Beedrill, you don't just take other people's Pokemon for a joyride!" He said angrily, still keeping a decent distance away, but not faltering in his words. Beedrill looked down, a bit sad he'd gotten in trouble.

"Whoa, easy dude," Nazz said, picking up her Pokemon. "Caterpie looked like she was having fun. And plus, nothing's broken. She's all good."

Jimmy shrunk back a bit, realizing he perhaps acted a bit too rashly. Bug Type or no, Beedrill seemed a decent Pokemon. He did not attack others outside of battle, or try to hurt those who were on the other's teams. He'd been too quick to make a snap judgment, and he knew that was no good.

"I'm sorry. I'm just antsy today. That battle in the forest shook me hard."

Rolf chimed in, placing a hand on Jimmy's shoulder. "No one would blame you for being quick to action after that, Delicate-like-a-newborn-hummingbird Jimmy Boy. But our Pocket Monsters get along very well. They would never harm each other."

Jimmy sighed. "You're right, Rolf. I just wish I could take my mind off of it."

"Well, nothing shopping can't help."

Everyone turned around to see Ryuji and Eddy standing there, the former with his hands stuck in his pockets as he looked to the rest of the party.

"And thankfully, I have a pretty large wad of cash after today," Ryuji continued. "Selling the extra copies of the TMs earned us a pretty substantial amount. Both sold at 5,000, and we had 16 altogether. We're sitting pretty at 80,000 Yen, boys!"

Everyone looked on in shock, Eddy in particular looking as though he'd just been told he was in the presence of a millionaire. Ryuji just looked at them in confusion.

"… What?"

"80,000 bucks!?" Eddy asked. "We got that just for a few little TMs!? You know how many jawbreakers we could buy with that kinda money!?"

"No?"

"Well neither do I! Sockhead, how many jawbreakers?"

Double D sputtered a bit. "W-well, I would have to find the conversion rate for Yen to USD, and at 25 cents per confection… well, let's just leave it at a lot for now."

Eddy was content with that answer, as he imagined filling a skyscraper full of the jawbreakers back home.

"Well, enough on Jawbreakers for now," Ryuji said. "We gotta get you guys some outfits better suited to the elements. Follow me, we'll go to the Goldenrod Department Store."

Ryuji waited outside of the changing rooms, eager to see the three Eds now that they'd gotten both their haircuts and their outfits figured out. It had been about 2 hours since they'd first gotten here and began planning their new looks. The Eds were last on the list, and as such, everyone else was now waiting on them.

"So, are they done yet?"

A cursory glance to the side put a smile on Ryuji's face, as Kevin and Nazz approached. The former placed on hand on his hip, the other hand gripping a strap of his new larger Trainer Pack.

In all honesty, Kevin looked like he bought from the 'Red Collection' with his outfit choice. His dark red undershirt was covered by a green overshirt with white lining and collar. His jeans were relaxed fit and complimented by a leather belt and his new black sneakers. And in the place of his original cap, he'd found a very average 'Pokemon Trainer' hat, mostly a darker red with a black brim and white circle on the front, representing a Poke Ball.

And next to him? Nazz stood in a new outfit that Ryuji could obviously tell was picked more for fashion than practicality. A black tank top covered by a white loose tank, and completed by blue skorts and below-the-knee socks. She had on a pair of high-tops with red lining, and a white boater hat, likely to keep her hair in check, given that it got much longer once they travelled through the cave. Slung over her shoulder was a much better bag for their travels, making her actually look like a proper trainer to some degree.

"Hey in their defense, they drew the short straws," Ryuji said. "And plus, it's not like I'm in any hurry. My outfit's designed to last."

"Lucky you. You didn't have to wait on anyone!"

From behind Kevin and Nazz appeared Sarah and Rolf, both having gotten their outfits only a short while ago.

Sarah looked much like one of the Picknickers they'd encountered earlier, only with a different color palette. She chose a long-sleeved shirt, which she rolled up the sleeves on, as well as a pair of shorts and below-the-knee socks over her own. She got a better handbag and replaced her normal shoes for something more durable. And the final accessory that brought it all together was the black hat on her head, which went well with her freshly cut orange hair.

"Is my brother done or what?" She asked, tapping her foot impatiently. "I wanna try that Gym Before the day ends."

"Doubt that's gonna happen," Ryuji chuckled. "I heard the Gym Leader left for the Radio Tower earlier. And considering Gold's over there, he'll probably pester her before he goes."

"Ugh! That guy just keeps getting on my nerves!" Sarah huffed, crossing her arms.

"Be patient," Rolf told her, having finally stepped into the scene. "Today is a day of merriment for he whose name is that of a precious metal. Let him have this, and we shall face her another time."

Rolf chose his outfit based on what he thought would be good for the elements, and it showed. He had gotten a better pair of loose-fitting jeans made of sturdy denim, a well-made pair of sneakers, and stuck with a simple white tank top for his shirt; something that would have no issues if it got dirty. The most extra he went for was at the request of Jimmy, who insisted that Rolf try to stand out a bit more. Out of respect for his friend, he grabbed a yellow vest and a set of black armbands, but beyond that he was practically the same. He did, however, get a better bag for the journey they'd be on.

"Rolf is surprised though at how much time it took for them to pick their new vestments," he said, running a hand through his hair. "Rolf was done within five minutes, other than boy Jimmy's interruption."

"Don't worry, they'll get done soon, I'm sure of it."

And as if on cue, the opening of three doors signaled the boys were ready to go. Out first was Ed, who had kept it simple. He traded out his jacket reluctantly for one of a slightly darker green, and his red and white striped shirt for a plain white tee. He had black jeans and white sneakers, as well as a red beanie on his head, giving him a bit of a gangly look. And slung over his shoulder was a large durable backpack, meant to carry everything he'd ever need.

"I look like one of those Rock Bands my dad used to listen to!" Ed said happily, pointing to the beanie on his head. "Look Double D! Now we are twins!"

Double D chuckled slightly, his outfit choice having been perhaps the most drastic change of the three. Even his signature hat had been changed slightly, still covering most of his hair, but having been replaced by one with a similar half-circle design to Kevin's hat. He wore a red collared short-sleeve shirt with orange patches, a set of black pants underneath purple shorts with black sides, along with gloves and sneakers that both were black with orange accents. He had a grey single-strap backpack on, completing the look in its entirety.

"Hardly Ed," Double D chuckled. "Though you do look much more refined now that our clothes aren't full of holes."

"Damn straight. Lookin' like you're ready for the league, Lumpy!"

Finally, there was Eddy, his outfit being the least different from his original. He had a uniformly yellow collared tee shirt, blue jeans, and black loafers, going for a relatively simple look that worked well. However, he did add a touch of color to keep things interesting, with a pair of red wristbands, and a black leather belt, on which he housed a purple pouch containing his Pokedex. This, combined with getting his hair all gelled up and styled, summoned up a particular image in the mind of the group's resident brunette.

"So, went for the Blue Oak look, did we?" Ryuji joked.

"Shut it!" Eddy countered. "I couldn't find any sick jackets! You'd think a store like this would have some better stock."

Ryuji shrugged. "Usually they do, I'd imagine. Must be they haven't put the new stock out."

Eddy sighed. "Whatever. I still look smokin'!"

"Well then, I take it you guys are good?"

A collective nod was the Eds' answer, which elicited a similar action from Ryuji. Without another word, he came over to the counter and began to pay. Once that matter was all settled, the party began their little trek out of the building, making it out only to find that Jimmy had finally left the casino.

Jimmy had gotten his outfit right before the Eds, and left in the meantime to do something. He kept it relatively simple and understated, with a plain turquoise button-up shirt, white slacks, and black loafers similar to Eddy. What made him stick out was his hair. Instead of going for something less crazy than his usual cowlick, he chose instead to go for a wild mess, paradoxically messy and well-kept at the same time.

He looked to the party and waved excitedly. "Hey guys! How you been?"

"We've been fine," Nazz said, "You went to a casino?"

"Yep."

"They actually let you in, pipsqueak?" Kevin asked.

Jimmy nodded. "Apparently if you have a trainer license but you're under 18, they'll let you play a maximum of 30 minutes a day," he explained. "So I decided to kill some time."

"And how much did they fleece you for?" Eddy asked.

To this, Jimmy's grin turned from sincere to smug in an instant.

"Well, actually, I fleeced them. Only a little, but I bought in at 50 coins and well…"

He pulled out a Poke Ball, and threw it skyward. From the small device burst forward a new Pokemon, at least relatively familiar to most of the group due to seeing it out in the grass earlier. It was small and mostly yellow in color, with the exception of patches of black across its body, and three brown segments almost resembling armor. It sat in front of the group, almost completely silent, but seeming completely aware of everything around it.

"(… It would seem my nap has been disturbed.)"

Double D looked at the Pokemon before him in complete disbelief. "Jimmy, you got an Abra!?" He asked incredulously. "I'm genuinely impressed! How much did it cost you with the casino method?"

"Only 200 coins, and like I said, they made me buy in at 50," Jimmy explained. "So, I sat at an 'Orre Holdem' table. Sounds weird, but we just would call it Texas Holdem."

"And in the time it took us to get our outfits, you quadrupled your coinage?" Eddy asked, putting the pieces together reluctantly.

"Yep."

"… I've never been so proud of anyone in my life."

Jimmy chuckled at that.

"So, that's pretty much everything everyone wanted to do for the day, right?" Nazz asked. "'Cuz I was gonna go check out the city more if no one's got anything they gotta finish."

Everyone confirmed that they did everything they needed to do for now, and so, Nazz decided to walk off with the 'okay' given. She knew where the Pokemon Center was, and would be able to meet up with everyone later tonight. For now, she was honestly just looking to explore a little, and intended to do just that.

But as it turned out, she would be doing so with a companion.

Double D walked alongside her, hands in his pockets as he walked in near synch with the girl.

"So, you're coming with, dude?" Nazz asked.

"I'm going to visit the Radio Tower, see what it's like, and it's this way anyway."

Nazz shrugged to that, and then a thought occurred. She had no idea where the hell she intended to go. She'd gotten her outfit and didn't really see anything too cute on the previous route. Sure she could go north and see what's up there, but that sounded like a bad idea. And she didn't just want to go back to that little rest area, because that sounded boring when she was alone…

"Do you wish to accompany me?"

Nazz looked to Double D, and happily nodded.

"Excellent!" He exclaimed. "Now let's go! I'm sure it will be quite the enriching experience!"

The Goldenrod Radio Tower stood tall, even among the buildings in this bustling metropolis. The structure was a glorious monument to radio broadcasting, and the massive satellite on it served to show the service they provided as clear as day.

And Double D was personally very excited to see the interior.

"So, you're into Radio?" Asked Nazz.

"A bit," Double D admitted. "It's a rather well-understood process at this point, but the way people make use of it is what makes it so intriguing."

"Oh yeah?"

An excited glint appeared in Double D's left eye, as he readied himself to eagerly talk off Nazz's ear. This was a topic he could easily discuss ad infinitum if given the chance, and for some reason, that eagerness felt greatly enhanced today.

But, before he could, he was going to see the interior.

"Definitely. Let's head inside and see what there is to see."

"Sure." Nazz said, before looking over Double D's shoulder. "Oh hey, there's Gold. Should we let him tag along?"

Turning around, he was greeted by the sight of their friend. Sure enough, he was leaning on the railings separating the end of the street from the open ocean. Much like earlier, Double D noticed the way Gold carried himself was off. Almost… somber.

"Well, I guess we could," he said, if for nothing else than to get the opportunity to ask if something was wrong.

And so, the two approached…

"OHMYGODIT'SYOU!"

Or at least they WOULD have, were it not for a girlish squeal of excitement, followed by a blur of white and pink. Before either of them knew what was going on, Gold had turned around, and was busy being aggressively hugged by a girl.

She looked no older than 16 by both of their guesses, and was a bit shorter than Gold himself despite that. Her hair was a vibrant pink, worn in small twin tails that were tied near her neck, and accentuated by a small golden clip near her ears. Her outfit consisted of a slightly oversized white and red shirt with large golden buttons, a pair of dark blue shorts, black and blue striped socks, and white sneakers with patches of red and black. She looked to Gold with pink eyes filled with excitement, and on of the biggest smiles they'd ever seen.

"Sora, you're back!" She said, voice teeming with joy. "Oh, I was so worried I'd never get to see you again!"

Gold rolled his eyes but wore a small smile at her excitement all the same. "Akane, I called you before I left. Also, I've been goin' by Gold more lately."

"Oh, my bad. But Sora's such a cute name, y'know?"

"Heh… you're hopeless."

It was at this moment that Gold finally took notice of their audience. He waved to his travelling companions and motioned for them to come over.

"I hope we're not interrupting anything, dude," Nazz teased.

"Oh no, nothin' like that," Gold assured. "Actually, this is pretty bitchin'. Guys, lemme introduce you to Akane, the Goldenrod City Gym Leader."

She waved at the two. "Nice to meet you!"

"A pleasure," Double D said. "I'm Double D, an acquaintance of… Sora, was it?"

Gold chuckled. "Well, guess you know now. My real name is Sora Tachibana."

"Nice name, my friend. It's bold."

Akane giggled, enjoying the good vibes between the two boys. "Y'know Gold, you didn't mention any friends in the call."

"It was kind of a sudden decision on the way to Azalea."

"Indeed…" Double D agreed, as a thought or two went through his head. "Say, how do you two know each other? Did you live in Goldenrod in the past? Or did Akane live in New Bark Town?"

Gold was about to answer, but never got the chance.

"Gold was my first opponent as the new Gym Leader!" Akane explained. "I'd just got the job from the old guy, and just finished redecorating the place. Then he walked in and challenged me to a battle!"

Hearing that caused Double D to raise an eyebrow. Something about that just didn't add up, and he wasn't yet sure where it didn't click. But, what better way to fix something like that than with a question?

"So wait, you've fought Akane before?"

Gold nodded without an ounce of hesitation. "I actually went on a journey three years ago. About the same time Champion Red made a big commotion in Kanto, actually. Made it all the way to Ecruteak up north, and that meant I had to beat Akane here. When we fought, she was just getting into Pokemon Battling. Wasn't even aware Clefairy was a Fairy Type and not a Normal Type."

The Gym Leader nodded. "I acted like a total crybaby, I'm kinda ashamed to admit. He was so nice, and I threw a tantrum when I lost. He was lucky Asuka told him to let me calm down, otherwise I would have forgotten about the badge…"

"Hey, don't beat yourself up over it," Gold told her. "Your first loss can be a big deal when you're new. Lord knows I wasn't happy first time I lost."

"Wow… seems like you had a productive journey, Gold."

The Johtonian boy looked to Double D, seeing the great curiosity laced in his expression.

"You were travelling and made it at least halfway through your Gym Challenge, and could have gone to the same league as Champion Red. What stopped you?"

At first, he didn't notice, but Gold's expression quickly changed. The golden-eyed boy closed his eyes, pointing his head down and letting a sad smile overtake his features. He took a deep breath in, and looked up to the skies, saying nothing for a few seconds. And for those few seconds, Double D wondered if he crossed a line…

Then, Gold finally answered.

"Team Rocket did."

Three little words, and yet they hit Double D like a Machamp. Unfortunately, it didn't end there.

"I had a Charmander for my starter," Gold continued. "And on the way out of Ecruteak, I saw these thugs attacking a kid. So, me and Charmeleon decided to try and help him out. Turns out, they were Team Rocket, probably takin' a look at Johto for future plans. The guy sent out a Cubone holding a Thick Club. At the time I didn't know this, but that item doubles the Attack of a Cubone or Marowak.

It was over before I knew it, and before I could even grab my next Poke Ball, the guy called for his Cubone to attack ME. It hurt like hell, and as the guy was about to mug me… I saw a stream of fire almost hit the guy clean in the face."

Double D's eyes widened, doubly so as he noticed the anger on Akane's face. She seemed genuinely frustrated, as if she knew what happened next. That did not bode well…

"Charmeleon got up to try and protect me, and got a Blaze-boosted Ember to take down Cubone. But then… the guy sent out his Raticate, and landed a critical hit Hyper Fang. I'd never seen a Pokemon bleed before that…"

"You don't mean…?" Double D asked, voice barely above a whisper.

His worst fears were confirmed with a simple nod of his head.

"Doctors did everything they could, but Charmeleon didn't make it. I blamed myself for getting involved, and I felt like I didn't deserve to be a trainer. So, I threw away my badges and called Mom to come pick me up."

Neither Double D nor Nazz said anything. Neither one knew what to say to that. Realistically, what COULD they say to that?

"Last 3 years have been spent doing nothing but upping my knowledge," Gold explained. "Battle strategies, Pokemon on the Tajiri Scale, movelists, item effects, the works. I vowed I'd finish what we started, and become the Indigo League champion. And with Quilava, I got my second chance."

"Well… I'm glad you regained your resolve, Gold," Double D said.

"Heh… anyway, like I said, I'll be headin' up to Ecruteak later tonight, after my rematch with Akane. I'm sure you can guess this, but Charmeleon's grave is there, and I wanna pay respects now that the anniversary of his death is comin' up."

Before they could get a word in edgewise, Gold took the final three eggs out of his basket, and handed them to Double D.

"While I'm gone, I want you to take these. Give the black and yellow one to Kevin, the darker blue one goes to Ed, and the lighter teal one you can give to whoever YOU feels deserve it; I'll trust your judgment. I'll be back in two days tops, but if you guys plan on moving on without me, I'll meet you halfway. Got it?"

Double D nodded, the two eggs resting within his arms and the third going within Nazz's hands for now.

"Kickass," Gold told them, before turning his attention to Akane. "Now then… I believe you owe me a Gym Battle."

"You're on," answered Akane. "But I gotta warn you, I've only gotten better since last time we fought!"

Gold smiled. "Can't wait to see it, sweet cheeks."

And with that, the two headed back to the Goldenrod Gym, leaving Double D and Nazz there to consider the ramifications of everything they'd just been told.

"So, Gold's gone and done this before, huh?" Nazz asked, basically just reaffirming it to herself. "No wonder he's so smart."

"Yeah. I'm sad to hear his previous endeavors ended so horrifically, but I am glad to see he has overcome his previous grief."

Nazz nodded. "So, who are we gonna give the teal egg to?"

"To be honest, I'm not entirely sure, Nazz. I mean, Eddy and I have already received Eggs, so getting a second seems unfair. Same principle for you, Kevin, Ed, and Ryuji. I could give it to Jimmy and Sarah, or maybe… maybe Rolf, actually."

Nazz giggled. "Sounds like you've talked yourself through the problem."

"Guess Bayleef's leaves have been making me more assertive."

Nazz tilted her head in confusion. In response, Double D showed her Bayleef's Pokedex entry, specifically the party relating to the leaf's aroma.

"That… doesn't sound healthy, dude." Nazz told him. "Sounds almost like drugs."

"Oh come now," Double D tried to reason. "You say that like I'm going to grow an addiction to it. I think that's a rather ludicrous assumption to make."

Nazz shrugged. "Alright. Just be careful, Double D. This place is big and scary, and Pokemon are kinda weird."

"Perhaps, but in a way, that's what makes this a grand adventure."

And so, they made their way back to the Pokemon Center, alerting the others to Gold's plans and doling out the eggs. Naturally, Ed, Kevin, and Rolf were pleased as one could expect to have earned Gold's favor, though the remaining two members were decidedly miffed at not winning any of the many eggs they'd found so far. But generally, spirits were high as the party ordered lunch, and Double D was left to ruminate on what he'd learned. He'd avoided the subject of WHY Gold was heading north, feeling it was not his place to divulge that fact. And something about it made him feel a bit… icky, was the only way he could describe it. He didn't like keeping secrets, even if he knew why they were secrets.

'Still though, I suppose it's not the first time this journey that I've kept something to myself…'

An unfamiliar ringtone rang through the ears of Ryuji Kazama, as his Pokedex alerted him to an incoming call. He had been waiting outside the Goldenrod Gym trying to kill time while waiting for Gold's challenge to finish, intent on seeing him off properly. On instinct, the brunette had been ready to push 'ignore', but upon seeing the number, his eyes lit up.

In one quick motion, he headed into the nearest alleyway and hit the 'answer' button. This was the call he'd been waiting for.

"Hey babe, how's it going?"

Hearing her voice respond back to this simple question filled him with a joy like few things could. This had been a longshot, given her schedule, but somehow, she seemed to find time.

"... Oh, it's been awesome. We're already 2 Gyms in. … Huh? Oh yeah, I haven't been able to tell you, but I'm travelling with a big group now. … No, that hasn't come up, thankfully."

Ryuji couldn't blame her for the worried tone with which she asked that question. It had been one that had invaded his own mind previously.

"Listen, I may not be a master of disguise like someone I know, but I don't think anyone's gonna look at me and think that. … Yeah, maybe contacts woulda been smart. But I guess that's something I shoulda thought of during my little vacation."

A twinge of guilt ran through his system as he realized what he said.

"I'm sorry about that..."

She sounded confused, and that only hurt him more. She could be so forgiving, and some part of him felt he didn't deserve it.

"I should have said something. I made you run all over creation looking for me, and when you found me, I still wasn't ready. You didn't deserve to be put through that."

… And yet, she went through it anyway. Those were her exact words, meant to encourage him, and yet still, he felt like a jerk.

"… I dunno. That's what this journey's supposed to help me with. … The others? … Yeah, I'll tell 'em someday. I'm just not sure when. … Well, thanks for the kind words. I promise once we get back, I'll have it all figured out."

He smiled, as she continued to give him words of confidence. It hadn't occurred to him just how much he needed this. Even if it was just for a minute or two, he knew this was just what the doctor ordered.

"I've missed you. I don't know when my next chance to talk to you will be, but I promise I'll try. I'm not gonna keep you in the dark anymore. … What am I doin' now? I'm gonna go face the Goldenrod Gym? … Thanks. I don't intend to lose."

A moment of silence remained between them, that neither one dared to break. A million thoughts ran through Ryuji's mind, ranging from his team to his friends and everything in between. There was so much he wanted to say, and so much he needed to say.

But for now, he just said what he felt.

"I love you, Green."

She responded in kind, and Ryuji felt satisfied for now. After some cordial goodbyes, he ended the call, and left the alleyway. He knew the journey still had a long way to go, and that with his new allies, there was still so much to experience. But in spite of everything that happened today, at the very least, he could say that he felt his conscience was clear.

A good thing too, as he was going to need it against Akane.
